I ordered Bún Chả Hà Nội and Bún Mắm, and honestly, both were pretty disappointing. The Bún Mắm was the worst I've ever had , the shrimp didn't taste fresh, the soup had no lemongrass flavor, and the fish felt cold and undercooked, probably frozen. The Bún Chả Hà Nội wasn't much better; the meat wasn't very fresh either. When we arrived, the restaurant was almost empty , just the two of us on a weekend, which felt a bit odd. The owner was really friendly and welcoming, and when I mentioned how the Bún Mắm tasted, he said he would take it into consideration. I truly want to support small businesses like this, but I hope they improve, because there are so many other options in the Bolsa area. Just had lunch here! Very good food and service! We had the bo la lot, banh canh, and bun bo hue. Bo La Lot was tasty and came with vermicilli noodles and lettuce, the nuoc mam (fish sauce) was very flavorful and paired well ! The banh canh was not very deep in flavor, but still rich and tasty! I really do not know how this place got the current reviews it has. We once walked in there to dine but it was freezing inside and my son didn't want to stay because he was so cold. We decided to walk out and 3 people surrounded us too get us to stay, it was overwhelming and uncomfortable. There was no one else in the restaurant. We decided to get food to-go on a diff occasion. We ordered few plates but I'm going to review 1. We order the grilled catfish for spring rolls. I ordered and XL fish . My husband picked it up and it was wrapped so he didn't look at it until we got home. When we saw it, it was a joke! The fish was so small ( and we paid for an extra large). You can see in the pic that the head was the size of an orange slice and barely bigger than two hands . It was a total rip off. They packed 5 pieces of rice paper ( for an extra large) . Which means I've essentially paid $80 for 5 rolls. and the vegetables they packed were not only scarce but it was rotting and looked like left overs that were picked through, I was pretty livid that they thought this was okay to do as we don't unpack to-go orders until we got home. If you're in the area and hungry, this stop is worth it. I love pho but was interested in trying other Vietnamese soups. This place did not disappoint! The place is clean and looks like most Vietnamese restaurants. The server and chef were very nice. The chef brought out the food and helped us box and bag leftovers. The menu has English underneath, so that helped me. We order a #6 and #7. I wasn't sure I liked shrimp paste broth (#7). It was one of the best soups I've ever had. The broth was perfectly balanced and delicious. They added a good amount of fish cakes, shrimp, pork. The bamboo soup (#7) Came with a separate plate full of duck. It was so much food, we went home with a whole second meal. If you're not into leftovers, just order one soup. Pro tip: The duck in the air fryer the next day was amazing. The Most Interesting Woman in the World had been eyeing this restaurant for awhile now and we recently had a chance to try it. We found the staff to be super friendly and grateful for our business. I'm pretty picky when it comes to food, especially Hai Nan style rice chicken. However, Zan Kitchen definitely got my attention..the place to go to for this dish! Chicken was excellent with its texture and the rice was perfectly flavored to balance with the soup that goes with the meal. As for the nước mắm... We love trying out new places and supporting small businesses; pictures looked great but food and flavor was not for us. I ordered the banh canh, and bun cha Ha Noi. The prawn in the banh canh was sweet and yummy but that's about it. You get one ham hock, two shrimps, a little crab, two small fish balls and a prawn. The broth was flat, mainly salty with not a lot of flavor. The noodles sadly was mostly broken and not fresh. I agree with the other yelper about the bun cha. The flavor was odd, a bit sour tasting like vinegarish? The patty tasted off, again not fresh. The sliced meat was dry and chewy. Noodles were warm, you can tell it was reheated in the microwave. As for the service, it was takeout so not much to comment. Restaurant business is not easy, and profit loss is real, but quality of food and freshness is the only way customers will return. I wasn't going to write a bad review but then I thought why not let the public know how SHADY this establishment runs. I've been here once before and ordered a medium size ca nuong. This is the second time my family and I ate here at Zan. Upon ordering, a medium size fish would be fitting for my family and I, since there's three us. The girl that works in the back comes out tells me that they're out of the medium size and only have large size fish left. Mind you it's about 1:00pm and there's no one in the restaurant but my family and I. A large size fish is suppose to feed 4 -7 people so I thought I'll take the left overs home. Guess what?!! WE GOT SCAMMED!!! When the ca nuong came out, I was shocked knowing that it's not a large size fish but a small and it definitely wasn't big enough to even feed the three of us. WE GOT SCAMMED, all for a fricken $10 up charge!!! My husband and son (11) had to order additional two bowls of noodles to satisfy their hunger. SHAME on YOU!!!!! Food: we ordered Bun Bo Hue and Bun Mắm. Bun mắm is too sweet. Bun bo soup is also sweet ( didnt taste much like Bun bo hue), fried onion takes away bun bo hue in my opinion. I'm not sure if it's still soft opening or grand opened already, but for the fact that I know it's a very new Vietnamese restaurant in Little Saigon. The service is excellent. Small restaurant which makes you feel cozy. We all tried Bun Mam which is pretty flavorful, the broth actually comes from fermented fish (not like some restaurant that puts flavor powder which is not good.) That's why we really like the dish. It's one of best Bun Mam that I've ever had. The lady (I think she is the owner) gave us more vegetables without us asking for more which is very good customer service right there. We ordered banh canh tôm cua gio heo, cha gio tôm cua, bánh hỏi bò là lot and bun cha Ha Noi. We all really enjoyed our dishes. Portions are good size and decently priced. I tried this place yesterday for dinner with two friends for the first time. I love the bún cá Hạ Nôi and the bánh hỏi lá lớp dish. It is great to share among three people and the both dishes are very flavorful . It was not salty and it has a great amount of vegetables to share. They should add more lettuce through because three pieces was not enough, the bánh canh that we ordered was too salty in my opinion. The service was very friendly, the workers are very attentive and they gave us what we wanted in a timely manner.
