Four of us went to SUP Noodle Bar in Irvine on a Tuesday evening. We arrived at 6:00 p.m. and managed to snag the last available table without a wait. Judging by how quickly the place filled up, coming much later would probably have been a different story. The Food Between the four of us, we ordered the Parmesan Fries, two variations of pho, the Filet Mignon Fried Rice, and the Cajun Garlic Noodles. The Parmesan Fries were a very generous portion, exceptionally crispy, beautifully seasoned, and--in terms of flavor--just about perfect. My only complaint was that they were noticeably oily. Other than that, I couldn't find much fault with them. The Filet Mignon Pho was a treat. The beef was exactly as promised: tender and flavorful. What surprised me was the distinct kiss of cinnamon in the broth. Personally, I would have preferred to suspect the cinnamon rather than clearly taste it, but that's entirely a matter of preference. My wife loved every bite. I also managed to steal a taste of the Filet Mignon Fried Rice. While I certainly didn't regret my own order, I immediately knew what I'll be having next time. The filet was wonderfully tender and juicy, and the rice had a beautifully rounded, savory flavor. A real winner. My Cajun Garlic Noodles were excellent. The sauce had just the right consistency--rich and creamy, yet still delicate enough that the garlic and seasoning weren't buried underneath it. It was certainly on the heavier side, but somehow managed not to leave me feeling weighed down afterward. Rich without becoming exhausting is not an easy balance to strike. The Atmosphere SUP has a modern, distinctly Asian noodle-bar feel. Hard surfaces, no carpeting, and very little acoustic dampening mean that, in polite restaurant language, the atmosphere is lively. In less polite restaurant language: it's loud. That didn't bother us, and it actually suited the casual, energetic atmosphere. But I probably wouldn't choose SUP for a quiet, intimate dinner--or for hearing a lengthy story in which every single word matters. The Service This was the standout. We were not the world's easiest table. Between four first-time customers, individual likes and dislikes, questions about the menu, and various dietary requirements, we gave our waiter plenty to work with. Chase was patient throughout. He explained things, repeated things when necessary, answered our questions, and helped guide each of us toward something that suited us. By the end of dinner, all four of us were convinced we'd ordered the right thing. I'm fairly difficult to impress when it comes to restaurant service, but Chase impressed me. This isn't fine dining, nor should it be judged as such. What stood out was something much simpler: at every opportunity, Chase did a little more than was required of him. He was attentive without hovering, knowledgeable without lecturing, and patient without ever making us feel that we were being difficult. That deserves recognition. The Bottom Line We thoroughly enjoyed the food, the service, and our evening at SUP Noodle Bar. The food was flavorful and well prepared, portions were generous, and the service--particularly from Chase--was exceptional. The only caveat I would mention is the noise level, and that certainly won't stop me from returning. In fact, I already know what I'm ordering next time: That Filet Mignon Fried Rice. --- And Then, Two Days Later... Well, that didn't take long. Two days after writing this review, I was back. Worst service I have ever experienced on a Saturday lunch on August 15th. We signed up for the waitlist, but still had to wait another 20-30 minutes after our table was ready. Then, when we finally came into the restaurant, they asked us to walk back outside because they still needed to set up the table. I have no idea what needed to be set up when the table was already cleaned, especially when we had hungry, impatient children with us. Once we were finally seated and ordered our food, it took forever to arrive. Whenever we tried to get a server's attention, they seemed to avoid eye contact. I understand mistakes happen, but instead of taking the dish back and remaking it, the staff simply brings me the shaken-style ingredients in a separate bowl and tells me to add them myself. That might be acceptable if it happened quickly, but on average, it takes 10 to 15 minutes for the ingredients to arrive. By then, my pho has already started to get cold, which takes away from the experience. What makes it even more frustrating is that I usually wait 30 to 45 minutes for a table. After dealing with the same issue during my last three visits, I'm not sure I'll be returning anytime soon. I got the brisket pho which had a perfect amount of meat to noodle ratio. The meat was tender and flavorful. The cilantro and scallion garnish is just phenomenal with the perfect broth. We also got the beef belly dry noodle. This was very good and similar to vermicelli noodles dishes. It had nice sauces on the side and well cooked flavorful meat. The process wasn't obvious to us. Looked like it took a while to get the refill orders logged - perhaps they were short staffed? My party waited a while for the refills to come, to the point where our broth got cold. After inquiring about the status of the refills, the waitress defensively explained "I already put it in, you have to wait until it gets cooked." That response didn't put my party at ease because we still didn't know how much longer we had to wait. The manager later delivered the noodle refills and explained there were kitchen hiccups, likely in an attempt to de-escalate. The friendliness eased tension, a professional way of handling customer frustration. We ordered two more refills with him immediately and they arrived quickly. However, the dining experience still felt unorganized because two additional refills arrived at my table that were not previously requested. When it came time to paying the bill, the approach was also unclear. Some folks paid at the front so I waited there. The staff chilled in the back area and I couldn't get their attention, but later was told to pay at the table. I also heard gossiping in the room headed to the bathroom, and the staff quickly hushed when I passed by. It created an awkward, uncomfortable atmosphere. Came on a Saturday at noon and the wait time was more than 90 minutes, so decided to come back earlier the next day and could immediately tell why the wait time is so long during peak hours. First the menu is simple, which makes ordering super easy since they only have a few signature dishes. However, the noise is a little loud in here due to all the people that they can seat. I always get the combination pho shaken style here and it's definitely enough to fill me up. I'm making it a personal goal when I visit the OC to go to all of the Kei Concepts restaurant and had to at least visit one on this last business trip I traveled for. We also did not anticipate such large bowls when we asked for 2 so we could more easily share our meals, but it was perfect. Where to even start with our meals? The beef belly dry noodles were delicious, a little tricky to mix but once it was, absolute perfection! Everything was so fresh and delicious. We were so happy and it could easily fill us both up. The Anthony Bourdain pho was perfection. The wok fried scallion oil was a Touch i would have never thought about until I came here. It really enhanced the overall flavor of the pho and meal! We picked up a a filet limo saltado and filet garlic noodle to go and if you love a good tender steak, definitely get either of these dishes. Our friends took us here for lunch on a Thursday and wow, I could not believe the amount of people in line. Luckily our friend had put our name down quickly and we were seated upon the rest of our party's arrival within 15 ish minutes. The place itself is a small/medium size with lots of tables for seating multiple small/medium sizes of parties. We were a party of 5 (4 adults, one baby/toddler with a high chair). I loved how they accommodated my child with their children's menu in addition to providing us with scissors to cut up noodles. Upon stating our allergies, they helped us with food suggestions and limitations. It's honestly the little things that go above and beyond, as well as their friendly service. Upon receiving our bowls you'd think by looking at the clarity of the broth that it wouldn't be super flavorful, but it absolutely was. SUP noodle bar has fantastic vietnamese fusion dishes! We stopped by on a busy Saturday afternoon and waited for about 20-30 minutes before being seated. Our server was super kind and attentive throughout our dining experience. Everything on the menu looked so delicious and unique so we ended up ordering a variety of dishes with a couple of standouts. Anthony Bourdain Pho: 5/5 This dish was easily one of the top highlights of our meal! The filet mignon was super tender, and the flat noodles had that perfect chewy, bouncy texture. The northern-style broth also really elevated the dish as it tasted rich, smoky, and was packed with flavor from the wok seared onions and garlic. This is definitely a must-order! Combination Pho Shaken Style: 5/5 The combination pho was super tasty! Similar to the Anthony Bourdain, the shaken style broth brought a nice northern twist to a classic pho order! The regular noodles tasted fresh and soft yet still slightly chewy, and the rib bone was so tender it fell off the bone easily. This is definitely a must order if you prefer traditional style pho. Lomo Saltado with Cajun Garlic Noodles: 4/5 I had some mixed feelings about this dish. The filet mignon cubes weren't as tender as expected and was slightly overcooked, but the dish still had some strong elements. The aji verde sauce paired really well with the crispy fries and was honestly one of the best parts of the dish! The garlic noodles however were a little disappointing. The Cajun seasoning unfortunately overpowered the fragrance of the garlic while somehow still lacking that savory depth. However, overall the lomo saltado itself was still beautifully seasoned with a nice tanginess that cuts through the smoky and umami taste. House Shaken Fries: 5/5 Yet another standout! The thin, crispy fries were drenched in a spicy tartar sauce reminiscent of the spread from in-n out, and it was topped with generous slices of beef belly that added a rich, fatty texture. Topped with caramelized onions, it really added a perfect sweetness to the dish while the sauce along with the cheese tied everything together without being too heavy. We honestly came for the pho but this dish absolutely stole the show. This is a must-order every time. SUP Noodle Bar absolutely lives up to the hype with their creative take on Vietnamese fusion. From the smoky Northern style broths to the bold and flavor-packed fusion dishes, every item feels thoughtfully executed. My daughter insisted us to take her here for her bday so we had to oblige. This is her fav pho place and i was anxious to see why. The waitlist was already over an hour at 5:15! Def join the waitlist if you're within proximity. We been to most of K-concept's restaurants and the service and ambiance was def on par. Aside from not getting the text on time, things went smoothly. We got seated about 5 mins after we checked in initially. We order the Anthony Bourdain, brisket and short rib. All of them were good but the Anthony Bourdain easily stood above. The garlic flavor def was apparent but not overwhelming. The filet mignon was just right as it was nice and tender. Then to top if off, endless noodles servings made it perfect. Usually I can't drink the soup as it over seasoned but thats not the case here. One of the best pho's ever. read more
