I'm not usually one to leave reviews, especially not a 3-star review, but I feel like people should know about my experience at Tsurukawa Udon. First, the food was delicious. Absolutely no complaints there. Unfortunately, the service really took away from the experience. I came here with my family, a party of 5, during lunch. We put our names down around 11:30 AM and were seated around 1:00 PM. We didn't mind the wait at all, but once we were seated, we received virtually no service. There's a QR code at the table that allows you to order, so we placed our order that way. However, throughout our entire meal, no one checked on us or came by our table. It felt like we were forgotten about. When our food arrived, the food runner noticed that we didn't have any utensils, plates, or even water. Aside from bringing out our food, that was essentially the only interaction we had with the staff. We finished our meal, and when it was time to pay, we were told that a gratuity fee would be added because we were a party of 5. I understand gratuity for large parties when there's table service, but in this case, I genuinely didn't understand the charge. We weren't checked on, weren't given water or utensils until our food was already being delivered, and otherwise received no table service. Again, the food was great, and I have no complaints about it. Unfortunately, the lack of service and the automatic gratuity left a disappointing impression. I went here for dinner with my son who really loves noodles and anything mentai. I'd read about the mentai noodles online so I wanted to take him to try them. We ordered the cold udon noodle set, the mentaiko cream gochugaru udon and some type of katsu on the side (sorry, I don't recall if it was chicken or pork). Since it was our first time visiting this restaurant, we decided to share everything. There are menu QR codes at each spot and you just order through the app once you scan it. We sat outside since it was a nice evening and got to people watch while we ate. Staff came by every now and then to see if we had questions or needed anything and they were very attentive, fast and helpful. We got our food fairly quickly after ordering and started with the mentaiko cream udon. I wasn't sure if I was going to like it and thought it would be too fishy due to the mentai. I was pleasantly surprised - it was not fishy at all, but had a great umami flavor that reminded me a bit of an italian rose sauce but with more depth. I expected it to be spice too but we regularly eat spicy food and didn't find it to be spicy at all. I thought the cream to noodle ratio was a bit off and wanted more noodles for all the delicious sauce. That was my only complaint about this dish. The noodles tasted fresh and were very bouncy and chewy- exactly how I like my udon. I was more excited for the cold udon flat noodles which were very hyped up on social media. I really liked the presentation and the care that went into laying the noodles out flat the way they were. It came with a sesame-paste type sauce and a citrus-yuzu sauce for dipping the noodles. I was a bit underwhelmed by the dish because 1) it was challenging to grip the wide flat noodles and dip them into the small sauce dish and 2) the sauces were just o-k. Out of the 2 sauces, I thought the yuzu was better and gave the noodles a refreshing taste since they are cold. My son ate most of the katsu but I didn't think there was anything overly bad or special about it- it just tasted like a regular katsu. I went on a Thursday around 12 PM with two friends, and we were able to snag the last table inside without a wait. There were still plenty of tables available outside. For all the dishes, I wished there was a little more udon compared to the amount of sauce. - Flat noodle himokawa cold udon: The noodles were perfectly thick and chewy, and I really liked the cold citrusy yuzu dipping sauce mixed with the side of radish paste. It was super refreshing and unique! The sesame sauce wasn't my favorite, though. Maybe because I associate sesame with desserts, and the sauce was thicker in consistency, it just wasn't my favorite. The corn salad and tempura sides were good, but nothing out of the ordinary. - Mentaiko cream gochugaru udon: I had pretty high expectations for this one based on the reviews, but it was just okay. It was much creamier than it was spicy, to the point where I had to add extra chili oil to bring some heat back into the dish. I could also barely taste the mentaiko, which was a little disappointing. - Konbata maze udon: My favorite and definitely the one I'd recommend trying! The combination of corn cream and spicy ground pork was unexpected, but it worked really well. It had the spice I was missing from the mentaiko dish, plus lots of flavor and texture. Came on a friday night and knew it would be busy but decided to put our names on the waiting list and relaxed in the outdoor seating areas nearby. Waited maybe around 25 minutes for 3 of us and sat outside. But when we were there, staff actually checked on us a couple times and refilled our water when we needed. We realized that most of the udons seem to focus on the flavor and noodles so we ordered chicken karaage as an appetizer to have some meat and it definitely came with a lot and tasted more like mochiko chicken with a slight sweetness in the coating. For udons, we shared 3 udons. The cold flat noodle combo, mentaiko cream, and spinach cream. Everything was absolutely delicious! Our large party of 11 tried a variety of udon dishes, and everyone left happy. They were also able to accommodate our group with kids easily since we arrived before the weekend dinner rush. There's a QR code on the table for ordering so service is pretty limited. The restaurant was busy and we weren't really checked on unless we needed something. We tried the Chicken Karaage ($9), Himokawa Cold Udon Set ($25), and Nabeyaki Udon ($19). The karaage came with a surprisingly generous portion, which was nice for the price. However, the chicken itself was just okay. The breading was different from the typical karaage I've had and had a slightly dry texture. The cold himokawa udon was probably the most interesting dish of the three. It came with a black sesame dipping sauce which initially caught me off guard since I was expecting something more traditional, but it ended up being quite refreshing and worked well with the noodles. That said - at $25, I would have liked to see a little more protein included. The set only came with one shrimp tempura which felt a bit light for the price. The nabeyaki udon was decent and came with chicken, fish cake, and an egg. My 5 star is only with the assumption that their AC not working is not a typical day for them. When my boyfriend & I went, we joined the Yelp waitlist they had because the wait was 75-90 minutes. Such a unique dining experience! The wide cold noodles made this meal one of my favorite experiences in a while. Came in a group of 3 on a Saturday, so naturally the wait was over an hour, given how this is a new viral spot. Service was quite fast for such a busy place though! The wide cold noodles came with a yuzu dipping sauce and black sesame dipping sauce. The yuzu was light and refreshing, while the black sesame was rich and nutty. It also came with a side of tempura and salad; def got the bang for our buck! The spicy udon was rich; made with a tofu cream sauce which was a little lighter and macro friendly than a traditional heavy cream sauce. Forewarning, no AC so come prepared to be baked inside or outside the place lol I would avoid coming during lunch hours on hot days because the food unfortunately becomes less enjoyable when you're just focused on the heat. After trying a few of their highlight dishes, I'd say the hot, creamy udon was probably better than their flat cold udon. I've had similar flat udon at other establishments, and I would say the flat udon here was on the thicker side, not as thin as you'd ideally want it to be. There was definitely a bite to it, so it was okay. I wouldn't come back specifically for this, but I would come back for their creamy udon if you're into that! Service was nice and prompt. read more

I'm obsessed with the Cold Noodle Set at Tsurukawa Udon. After having lunch here twice, it's confirmed that this meal is a most try. The cold noodle set comes with a side salad, mixed tempura, wide udon noodles, and 2 dipping sauces. The ponzu is refreshing and the sesame is slightly sweet and nutty. This place has all the hype and a unique cold udon dish. My family loves udon so we came to give it a shot. The staffs are very nice and helpful, but it seems very chaotic in the restaurant. This is somewhat of a new restaurant so I do expect an adjustment period for them to smooth out the duties etc. However, it just feel like some servers know exactly what needs to be done while others just keep discussing with each other. We stood at the front of the restaurant for a while before someone give us eye contact. This is when we were informed that my table was ready. I was not waiting to ask any questions or putting down my name on the list. We already waited 45 mins in the heat so I was hoping to get seated soon. The restaurant has no AC! It was a hot day and they do not have AC. They have a few large fans blowing hot air around the restaurant. The servers are drenched in sweat. The kitchen staff must be dying inside. The entire time, I wish we can just eat and get out. The food was decent. I was not a big fan of the cold udon. The udon was a bit thicker than I like and the sauce was not exactly all that refreshing. At least it came with some Tempura. The curry udon was decent but it didn't stand out or anything. There are a few very good udon places in nearby city so I probably will not return to this place. My rating is not about the staffs. The staffs are great, but the overall experience is just meh. The heat, the wait, and the quality of food created a slightly undesirable experience for me. read more

Very unique and delicious udon here! The flat udon cold noodle pairs so well with the two sauces provided (a yuzu based one and a sesame one). Super refreshing! My friend tried one of their hot udons and it was also really good. Would definitely return to try other menu options! read more

I had to try Tsurukawa Udon in Tustin after seeing this yummy udon fish blow up on TikTok and I LOVED it! My boyfriend and I both ordered the himokawa cold udon because it was HOT outside and it was super refreshing. The dish came with tempura and a salad in the side. There were two dipping sauces - one yuzu sauce and one black sesame. Both were YUMMY with the bouncy chewy flat udon noodles. I would come back after the hype dies down. I was on the waitlist prior to arriving but still had to wait an extra 30ish minutes after getting on the waitlist at 11:20am on Sunday. read more
