Salmon Handroll
Cheron N.

Fair warning: if you go at a busy time, there will be a wait because it's a handroll bar and it's very delicious so people will want to eat here. 100% worth the wait. The staff makes up for it by being super friendly. Every single one of them was nice and looked happy to be there. The price is listed as 3 dollar sign but I found the prices to be extremely fair! Especially for the quality of food you're getting. Ambiance is hip and cool I guess. My son like the soy sauce dish because it looked cool.

This place is really a niche for some, and others might not understand the concept. It is a bar that offers sushi hand rolls. Now these rolls are simple: protein, rice, and seaweed. We took the lunch special which is four rolls, miso soup, and edaname for $17.00 Surprisingly, this is more food than you think. We had enough to eat. The quality is good, but simple. I do like the concept. The staff is very nice. I was hoping their hand rolls would include more. When I go to Kura and order a hand roll, it has carrots, celery, avocado, rice, a protein, and seaweed. It is a thick roll. The seating seems limited and the design of the room limits how many people can sit at a time. In summary, the food is healthy, reasonably priced, and tasty. This might be the perfect place for you.

A5 uni Handroll

Went here for lunch and was able to get on the yelp waitlist ahead of time so it wasn't a bad wait. Everyone sits around the stool and it does have an elegant but casual feel to it. The sets are the best value and I got the 6 piece set. It came with salmon, yellowtail, tuna, crab, scallop and toro! Loved the yuzu sauce which definitely adds another element to the rolls. My favorite of the set is the scallops. We ended up treating ourself to the A5 uni handroll. The a5 was soft and melted in my mouth and the uni was creamy and fresh. I would say for the price I would've wanted them to fill the roll up with more A5 and uni but overall I did enjoy it!

Look at the presentation style before you even eat, really sets the standard for quick paced sushi bars!

This was my first time going to this restaurant and I'm honestly in love. The style reminded me of Japan's actual sushi bars, putting me right back in the small hidden gems that I found while touring Tokyo. True to the name of this restaurant, the rolls are made fresh and in full view. I loved that they served the rolls fresh onto your plate and you eat as they make them allowing the temperature of the filling to be as fresh as possible and the texture of the seaweed wrap to be perfectly crispy. My favorite was the crab roll and the tempura roll. An additional thing that I really loved was that they had hooks available under the bar to hang your bag so it's not tangled in everyone that passed through or falling off the chair when you try to situate it behind you. Their truffle soy sauce and fresh wasabi was an insane combination but I'm definitely coming back to try all of the other flavors too.

As always, this place never disappoints. Great food, great ambiance, great people. ROL is my go-to spot because the food and service are always consistent even at their other locations. The only thing I ever have to figure out is which location has the shortest line.

Having mixed feelings after our visit yesterday Wait was reasonable (still 30 min on Wednesday evening), hostess and staff were all so friendly. Noticed the prices went from last time, but in this economy I don't blame them. The strip lights were also falling from under the bar onto my lap, but I suppose that happens. The food tasted good, but we were absolutely shocked at the portions. Compared to even just when we visited two months ago (granted a different location) the rolls were not only noticeably skinnier but also missing a whole bite's worth of filling (see picture). Even while eating the rolls there were some bites where it was purely rice and not even a noticeable amount of fish. And obviously the rolls won't look 100% like the restaurant's promo pictures but the stark difference between picture and reality is something I'd expect from a fast food joint, not a nice sit down spot T.T My best explanation for the gap is that you start from the other side so the fillings don't spill out at the back as you work your way down, but still overall doesn't explain why they looked skinny and felt lacking with each bite. Anyway it's a pity because the quality really is so good.

We came to the lunch special and there was about 30min wait. The prices were amazing for the amount of food. We love this place and will keep coming back for the lunch special! Highly recommend the fresh wasabi. Scallop was the favorite!

Tracey is such a welcoming server and Emily even recommended some great sauces and drinks! Be sure to try the chili garlic edamame super bang bang! All the handrolls are so freshly made in front of you! The selection of saki is nice and they even have beer on draft. The vibe inside is so chill and they have nice ambient lighting. Even play some cool music! Must try and definitely get on the waiting list.

Pretty good. Long waits on the weekend is to be expected. Salmon rolls, mushroom and avocado were all solid. Pretty pricey. Drinks were good. Edamame was good as well.

High quality ingredients, well crafted, no nonsense maki rolls. Got these delivered and was so happy with them and the packaging was nice too! Reasonably priced for the quality. Recommend checking them out!

We went here for lunch and the lunch special is pretty solid! Miso, small bowl of edamame and four hand rolls (salmon, spicy tuna, scallop, and blue crab). You have the option to swap any of them out for each other and personally, I would get two salmons and two spicy tunas. The scallop was covered in a mayonnaise type sauce and was too overpowering. The blue crab had the similar thing where the sauce was too much. But I also don't like crab, so take that with a grain of salt. You can't bring outside drinks. Staff were super friendly and food came out quick.

Spicy crab crunch and Toro

Met up with a friend at ROL after not wanting to wait for one of the other restaurants in this plaza. Overall, I thought ROL was a solid hand roll restaurant but it didn't hit the spot as much as other hand roll places have. We checked in at the host stand, waited about 15 minutes, and were sat at the high-top bar seating area. The concept of the bar allows you to interact with other patrons and staff easily. Service was fast, and staff was attentive and accommodating. Instead of ordering one of their set menus, I decided on ordering a la cart rolls. I had the spicy tuna crunch, toro, and avocado rolls. All three were good, but the toro was my favorite as the fish really melted in your mouth. The quality of the fish was fresh. I probably would not go back in the future, but it was definitely worth the try!

I ate at ROL Hand Roll Bar for the first time today and it was at their Irvine location off Culver Blvd. You can check in on Yelp to join the waitlist to be seated but luckily my family of 4 was seated right away. They don't have a kids menu (my kids love sushi) so I just ordered my kids the 5 hand roll set. They liked the Scallop hand roll the best followed by the Spicy Tuna (they liked the crunch) and then the Yellowtail with scallions. They also liked the salmon hand roll. The Blue Crab roll was their least favorite and I tried it too and I think they put too much mayonnaise on it so it tasted like the tuna fish sandwiches I'd eat when I was a kid in the 80s. I took a bite to sample each of my kids' hand rolls and I agreed with their ranking however I thought the spicy tuna was the best (I loved the crunch) and I also liked the scallop because of how creamy and rich it tasted. As for myself, I did wanted to do the $15 lunch hand roll set (what great value!) but while it was lunch, it was NOT M-F and since it was the weekend they didn't offer it so instead I ordered "The High Roller Set" which was $55 and consisted of 5 hand rolls, miso soup and a "premium sauce": -Truffle Mushroom hand roll 8/10 -Uni & Toro hand roll 10/10 -Lobster Hand Roll 7/10 (too much mayo like I mentioned above for the Blue crab - overpowering it with mayonnaise reminds me too much of the tunafish salad sandwiches I'd eat on white bread back in the 80s - ugh) -Toro-Taku 9/10 -Surf & Turf 10/10 (Looove the Wagu) -Miso Soup 10/10 (can't really mess up miso soup) -Yuzu Special Sauce 7/10 (the flavor was fine but the texture was really syrupy so that thick texture was off-putting to me - I actually ended up requesting Ponzu which I thought paired much better and was less overpowering We also ordered the: -furikake fries 9/10 (come with a great sauce and they are super crispy so be warned I prefer mushy fries but my husband who likes super thin crispy fries loved these - I liked the furikake flavoring as well as the dipping sauce) -cucumber salad 7/10 (it was more soy based and not as sweet and vinegary like I prefer elsewhere) Overall, it was fun to sit at the bar and order hand rolls and my kids had fun. Service was fine - friendly but not super attentive - but there are soooo many great sushi places in OC I'll probably go elsewhere and not return here.

ROL Hand Roll Bar - Irvine Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - ROL Hand Roll Bar - Irvine

If I can't have garlic and spicy food, can I eat here? I'm concerned about all of the warnings they have on the website about cross contamination, etc.

Yes, most of the rolls are not spicy and do not contain garlic.

Can you provide gluten-free options?

Non-celiac gluten-sensitive here. I was able to eat the salmon, toro and blue crab handrolls. I was advised to avoid the salmon spicy tuna donburi and furikake fries due to gluten. No dipping in soy sauce ofc.

The ambiance alone makes it feel like a whole experience, not just drinks. We tried a few of their specialty cocktails, all super well done, but the real highlight was our server John. He was amazing -- attentive, fun, and clearly knows his drinks. At one point he made us an off-menu cocktail that was STRONG (in the best way) and honestly one of my favorites of the night. And the attention to detail?? He even let me borrow his hat for photos so I could fully commit to the camping aesthetic 10/10 for the vibes. Overall: such a cute, unique spot for a night out. Perfect for something a little different, a little playful, and definitely memorable. Would absolutely come back -- as long as it's this kind of camping.

My friend and I both got the autumn salad: mine with a crab cake, hers with steak. Another friend ordered the steak and fries. My salad was fantastic, and the crab cake (both as a topping and as a starter) was a hit across the table. Everyone was happy with their food. Cocktails: The current theme is classic cocktails, and the space definitely leans into that old school martini bar vibe, very classy. Drinks were solid. I ordered the mango cocktail (can't remember the name) and it was a little on the sweet side, but not overly so. Still enjoyable. Service: This is really why I'm writing the update. Erica was our server and she was AWESOME. She noticed my friend's steak was overcooked and immediately replaced it even though he said he'd eat it because he was starving. That kind of attention and care is rare. Someone please give her a raise.
