I love this place. I live in Davis Square, and haven't been impressed with the bike shops in the area, so I ventured out into arlington. This summer I was training for the "Cape Cod Getaway" a Bike ride for MS from Boston to P-Town -- so I needed some guidance and some gear. When I got there I was immediately helped, and the person on the floor was extremely knowledgeable (compared to me). I ended up leaving with a couple pairs of bibs (I went in asking if I should get shorts or bibs), and an ear full about nutrition. After training a bit and consistently bonking after 40 miles or so, I went back and figured I'd give the nutrition thing a shot. The guy explained very clearly what I needed to do and how many calories I needed to consume throughout my ride to keep my body going. Put to the test? I went 75 miles without issue. Thank you quad cycles! I'd recommend this place to anyone, and from my internet comparisons, the prices seem pretty spot on. read more

I'm biased because Quad has sponsored an AIDS Ride I love for two years now. They're amazingly generous in their time and commitment to biking in the Boston metro area! Bobby Mac and Rustem have always been engaged, easy to deal with, and caring - truly caring about making sure people can enjoy biking. Yesterday, my hubby and I took his bike in to repair a mess another bike shop had created. The guys at Quad had it fixed quickly (it was an easy fix for a problem the other place had created and missed!) He also checked the adjustments on the gears and made sure everything was working right. So, $10 and 10 minutes later, our problem was fixed, gotta love that! In addition, they have great training rides on the weekends. Depending on the weather, you'll get dozens of riders who go on neat routes, split up by Beginner, Medium, and Fast riders. People are mostly friendlly, and the vibe is quite approachable. Totally a neat way to meet similar folks in town. read more

I always hate leaving a negative review, but this morning I had two contrasting experiences with LBS and Quad Cycles fell real short. I was changing the freewheel at home on my single speed and I didn't have the right hub wrench. I took the wheel into QC and asked if I could get a little help. I was asked if I'd be willing to leave it for an hour for the mechanic to look at it. I was about to leave it when I was told that if they were able to help loosen it, it would be $15. The combination of the wait and the fee prompted me to head down Mass Ave to Bicycle Exchange in Porter Square. They took it in the back room and two minutes later handed me the wheel with the freewheel loosened. When I asked "how much do I owe you?", the guy laughed and said it would take him longer to write it up than the repair took. No charge. The only reason I'm not giving one star is that the guy at QC was polite and he told me about the fee in advance. Other than that, hard to feel good about the place. read more

I am mechanically challenged. I fixed a flat and couldn't figure out how to get front brake to work well after putting it back on. Called quad cycles at noon and said come right in. They stopped what they were doing, taught me what I did wrong, and fixed it in less than a minute. No charge. Even though I was embarrassingly clueless, never made me feel bad about coming in. Prior to my last (and I mean last) visit to Quad Cycles, I had bought a few odds and ends here, always dealing with one of the staff. Nothing to write home about, but they were more or less friendly, helpful, local and close to home. However, during my last visit, I dealt with the owner, and again I will not be back. I came in, looking for advice and very likely to buy a part, for my 5 year old's bike. I've been to dozens of bike shops and have found the vast majority of them, being happy to lend advice. For some reason the guy manning the floor felt he should get the owner. After I presented my case, right off the bat, the owner aggressively peppered me with questions and was dismissive of my concern, regarding the bike. He then brusquely, advised me on what I needed to do. It was bad, and wrong advice. I needed a single link for the chain and that was all. It was at this point that he also correctly stated that I had purchased my son's bike online, which I confirmed. While I understand the frustration local bike shops feel about online bike purchases, it does not condone his escalation of overtly rude behavior. At this point he became surprisingly passive aggressive and agitated. In the end, all I needed was a single link for the chain. As the owner grumpily retrieved a new chain off of the shelve his mechanic KINDLY offered to give me a piece of used and discarded chain to get my link, instead. I felt a little bad for the guy, as I wondered what kind of grief he would endure after I left. Anyway to conclude, had I had merely dealt with the mechanic, that place would have a customer for life. After my encounter with the owner however, I will never spend another dollar at that shop again. read more

I had a fantastic experience with Quad Cycles. I had just moved to from Copenhagen and was hoping to continue relying on a bike to get around day-to-day. Being new to Boston, to the bike scene, and also to New England winters, I feel very lucky to have found Quad Cycles. I'd previously gone to other places and felt a real difference coming to Quad Cycles. Rustem was incredibly patient and went above and beyond to talk through my different options and figure out what bike would be best for my specific needs. I felt like he really put my interests and safety first, and he was so concerned about my safety on the bike I was using temporarily, that he lent me one to use to get to class on time in Cambridge. Matt and Jerry were a great team, always helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. Quad Cycles felt very much like a community bike shop that cared about bikes, people, and the neighborhood. I stopped in to check out their new location the other day and see what the shop was like. I hadn't stopped in for a few years so I was curious how the shop has evolved. Unfortunately the visit didn't go too well. Whoever was manning the floor yesterday did not rub me the right way. Since I'm not a novice cyclist and in my 30's I tried to clearly articulate concerns and needs, but this young guy quickly dismissed what I was saying. I'm a tall guy with very long legs and a short torso and I explained that I favor a larger frame with a shorter top tube. The issue of crank length came up and I said I wouldn't want to investigate frame sizes below a certain size because of the factory delivered crank length. He dismissed that and just said "spin more-crank length doesn't matter". Uh yeah that's not how it works buddy-crank length DOES matter. Then he told me I could just swap the crank, seat post and stem if I had to to make the bike work. Uhh...Why would I buy a new complete bike and then proceed to spend hundreds taking it apart and attempting to make it fit because it's too small? How about I just buy the correct size to begin with. Again, I tried to explain why I think we weren't on the same page and then he suddenly decided I should just get a compact geometry frame which was "designed for guys like me". Completely incorrect and not the reason for compact frames at all. I wanted to slap my forehead. I decided to thank him for his time and just look around the shop a bit before I left. I think he was happy to get back to his magazine and chatting with his friends on the phone and that was just fine with me. In summary: The Quad Cycles approach-be uninterested in what you're saying, be completely uninformed on bike geometry and fit, and recommend an ill-fitting size on a $1400 bike so you can spend $600 making it fit. I had a fairly good idea of what type of bike I needed, and stopped in to see what Quad had. It rapidly became obvious their primary objective was unloading their inventory, not getting me on a bike that matched my needs. At no point did any of the people helping me ask what type of cycling I was doing (racing). They were only interested in selling me bikes that were in the store, in my size -- only one of which even remotely matched my needs. I went elsewhere. read more

While shopping for a new bike, I happened to notice this place while driving down Mass ave. I rode my bike out to it the next day to check out what they had to offer. There was only one person working, so I had to wait a bit for him to finish with another customer. We started chatting - I told him my story and also mentioned I wanted to try some steel frames (suggestion from a friend who's been biking a long time). He dismissed this idea -directing me to bikes that he had in stock. We also talked about components and again, he seemed most interested in directing me to those that he had in stock. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE SHOP! DO NOT GO THERE I'd give zero stars if possible. First of all, everyone in there tries to steer you to the MOST expensive of everything. And then imply that even if you buy something you're not competent enough to know what you're doing to install something yourself. The owner is the worst. A complete rude jerk. I've been in there a couple times for purchase and then drop off and pick up from a tune up and each time he is just rude. I was in and asked if they do TT bike tune ups. He said yes and told me how much. I dropped my bike off a few days later and added things such as a $200 new saddle, $60 a piece tires (not to mention I'd spent $170 on a helmet a few days earlier). When I pick it up a few days later the price is $80 more than I'd been quoted and he told me that if I'd read the slip I'd know. Sure, because that chicken scratch is legible. However, the price on the slip was $420 and now I'm paying $520?? (they did mention before I left when I dropped it off that they'd forgotten to add bar tape-- and of course they chose THE most expensive instead of asking me) And then he had the nerve to say, this is a TT bike, I should have charged you more. Ummm. then don't quote that price when asked! After I got home with the bike I realized that I didn't have the rest of the bar tape since I'd just asked for the outer bars to be wrapped. I called and he said that the aero bars were coming off and needed to be done too. False. Then I could hear him get huffy and ask what the hell I wanted him to do about it. I said it would have been nice to know you were doing work I didn't ask for. Then he started arguing with me. Finally he told me to come back and he would give me tape. Totally not worth my time, so I said he'd just get a not so great Yelp review. To which he got all immature and falsely dramatic "Oh noooo! Not a bad Yelp review... anything but that.OooooOOoohhhh" At that point I mayhave sworn at him *oops*- but imagine my surprise when he swore back!!! If there's anything I've learned over the years in customer service is that when a customer swears at you, you simply hang up. You don't yell back at them. I was upset enough that I'd just dropped over $500 on repairs (and can only return for store credit if the seat sucks!) and then to have the OWNER of the store swear at me???? Ripoff alert! I bought a defective bike at Quad Cycles. It was a model they had much trouble with. I once found this out from a new sales person who had not yet learned the ways of this shop. Instead of fixing it for me, or honoring his commitment by replacing it, the owner gave me the runaround each of the many times I brought it in to have the gears serviced. He told me on different occasions that there was nothing wrong with it, and that they were too busy so I should bring it back later, and that I should ride it a couple more times and then bring it back (it wouldn't ride). Each time I insisted on servicing, and he unwillingly relented, but it was never fixed. During the many times I was in the shop, I witnessed the same tired sales pitch I got. A little chit chat, some fake interest, and an upsell. I need a shower. This is not a good place and these are not good people. Don't let the reviews below fool you. I HATE THIS STORE. I HATE THIS STORE'S SALES PEOPLE. I've been riding bicycles and motorcycles forever. I've also built and repaired countless bikes and motorcycles, so, I think I know a little bit about bicycles and how to ride them. My friend gives me a bike, which the rim is bent and flat tire. I take the wheel to THIS HORRIBLE STORE and ask to buy a new tube, thinking, if I take the wheel, there is no mix up on buying the wrong tube. WRONG. First the guy tells me - "Your rim is bent, you should buy a new wheel". - Look buddy, I don't want to buy a wheel, I can true a rim. He walks away, then comes back - "Your tire is in bad shape, you should buy a new tire" - the tire is fine, i don't want a tire, just a tube. Then he says "Well, this is a real safety hazard and dangerous"..... serious, the only safety hazard is the lack of brain cells this guy had. I really hate when sales people use the "Dangerous" sales pitch. At this point I tell him "Look, either sell me a tube, or not. Stop wasting my time". So, he comes back with a tube.. i buy it and get home... TO FIND OUT ITS THE WRONG SIZED TUBE!!! How much of an idiot is this guy??!!! If you have thousands of dollars and are some 'elitist' cyclist - go here. There are plenty of morons that you can hang out with. This place is just poorly run and the customer service is terrible. The people that work here are rude and belittling. They treated me poorly and I overheard several store employees being brusque with other customers. Not to mention, they screwed up my wife's bike. We took it in for a tune-up. The first ride after picking it up, the chain busted and my wife went hurtling to the ground. They fixed it for free, but needless to say we're never going back to this place again. read more

A few weeks ago I went to Quad cycles looking for my first racing bike as someone very new to the sport. Rustem was incredibly helpful. He walked me through the different components of the bike, asked questions about my needs, and provided knowledgeable and thorough information. After some thought I returned and purchased the bike he recommended. The staff helped me find the shoes and cleats I needed, fit the bike to me, gave me pointers and feedback, and taught me how to safely clip in and out. After 100 miles on it, I can safely say I've ended up with a bike I love that meets my needs and price point. read more

They do not bill the price they announce, they do not do repair on time. They do not even do the repairs themselves. You cannot trust them. I had to repair my fork. I was told it will cost 200 and that it will take 10 days. After 10 days the bike was not ready, I learned that they did not repair it themselves and had to send my bike somewhere else to get the fork fixed. At the end the price was 330 and when I argued the guy told me they had to change the brakes. I showed him it was not the case, then he told me it is his margin and I have to pay the price. Also I had a white fork and they put a black one. When I asked him why they did not contact me to ask if this was okay, he did not answer I will never go again and you should not either read more

I had a similar experience to Patrick B. I was looking around for a good commuter bike, preferably with disc brakes. I had discovered a couple candidates manufactured by Jamis, and Quad was listed as a reseller. Unfortunately, Quad didn't have the models I was looking for, but the salesman (owner?) had me test-ride a couple other bikes that he had available. The salesman was very amicable, and did convince me that I shouldn't worry so much about getting a bike with disc brakes, but his language nonetheless had an edge of pushiness towards the bikes he had in stock that made me slightly uncomfortable. The store itself is fairly small, but pretty well packed with a range of bicycles, and a large area devoted to maintenance (which appears to be fairly popular, as three different people came by for tuneups in the 20 minutes that I was there). It's not terribly far from Wheelworks to the south, and JRA to the east, as well as the dozens of shops in Boston/Cambridge, so I recommend shopping around a bit before letting yourself be talked into a decision. read more

I had a great experience purchasing my first road bike from Quad Cycles. I had been doing research, knew my budget, and had visited several other shops. I was still overwhelmed with options and several of the other shops seemed more interested in closing a sale instead of helping me find the right one. Did I really need disc brakes? Is carbon fiber worth it for me? Matthew at Quad Cycles was extremely knowledgeable and understood what I was looking for. He helped me narrow in on a Cannondale CAAD12 and I could not be any happier with my purchase. I opted for a basic bike fitting and tried half a dozen seats, ultimately upgrading to one that was substantially more comfortable. A couple weeks after purchase I noticed some noises and brought it back in. Matthew's follow up service was also fantastic. I have no hesitation recommending Quad Cycles. read more

There was this sign outside proclaiming: "10 - 30% Off All Bikes" which got me inside. So I took a little look around, and the guy behind the counter says the discount is written in the flip side of the price tag. I was stoked -- although the prices were on the high side, a discount is always welcome. I decide on one bike, which doesn't have the discount indicated, so he tells me "Oh, that's 10%." I joked "So how about 30?" (not being serious at all -- just a jocular statement). The guy answers back -- "You wish." Needless to say, this throws a wrench into the possible sale. Then I realize -- if this is the way this place treats a potential new customer, just think how bad they would be during a service call? (My guess is, probably pretty lousy...) I'll pass on this place, just on the basis of their attitude. Maybe "you wish" you would have had sold me the bike -- I'll buy my bike elsewhere. read more

This is a bike shop for people who blindly spend way too much money on their bikes. The employees are not knowledgeable and the owner is extremely rude. I believe the store has a core set of customers that you see cruising around town in those ugly green and blue jerseys who will pay the high prices for the expensive products they carry in this store. That's the only way I can imagine this place staying in business based on the incompetence of the employees and horrible attitude of the owner. If you are a do-it-yourself type rider who is trying to save some money and does not need the latest and greatest $500 seat post, you should go somewhere else. Chances are they will be rude to you if you go into buy something like tubes or grease. If you truly love bicycling, you are kind to fellow cyclists, which they are not in this store. I'd give zero stars if possible. The staff here is arrogant, rude, and attempts to upsell you to an insane degree. I've been here before and it's been unpleasant, today, I steeled myself for another crappy interaction. I needed a nut for my son's crank. I told the salesman what I needed, a standard 14mm crank nut, he proceeded to tell me "no cranks nuts are standard, let me have you consult with a mechanic". Ok, maybe everything I knew about my bike and cranks nuts was wrong, no worries. Mechanic shows up, proceeds to get in an argument with me about whether I need a nut, or a bolt. So...I said I'd go elsewhere...didn't have time for a big argument about hardware. Mechanic says "no, I just want to make sure you understand the difference between a nut and a bolt" in a super snarky tone. My last comment was "I need a 14mm crank nut. Do you have that, or not?" Mechanic grabs the nut, charges me two bucks for it when it's a dollar anywhere else. Fun times! If you enjoy arrogance, up selling and overcharging, have a visit here. If not - go elsewhere. I am surprised by the largely glowing reviews here. I expected at least mixed. It's worth noting that most indicated some other kind of relationship with Quad other than customer, such as charity ride or team. I think this places oversells bikes to customers who don't need them and overcharges for parts, accessories, and services. In one case an unbranded tire was sold to a friend of mine as a "very special tire" for something like $35 when it was all over the Internet for $9 or less. For me, someone I trusted sent me there for one specialized repair, so I didn't shop around. I got attitude and was charged five times what the Bikeway Source would have charged me and the kicker is that permanent damage was done to my vintage part in the process, but the owner's attitude throughout the whole thing made it obvious to me there was no point in bringing that up to him once I had discovered it. I don't think I have met anyone who has gotten good service at a good price from Quad, but in fairness, most people tell their horror stories and/or ask questions about things that don't work, not things that do. Other review sites have some quad stories more consistent with what I hear and see. For service, I'd reommend the Bike Stop, which, when Quad Cycles moves, will be just around the corner. read more

I tried to buy a $5000 Moutain bike a few weeks ago. My experience my horrible! first they were not willing to provide basic information, second they were extremely rude. I don't get how a shop with such bad customer experience can survive. They are certainly being in a survival mode but nothing more than that! Be VERY careful of what they tell you since a few times they tried to manipulate the truth about the brand new bike I wanted to buy. Thanks God! good selection, fair prices, but poor service. I was happy with the deal I got here on a complete bike, but unpleasantly surprised with the quality of the service department: on my first ride on the new bike I noticed 1. there was a very loose screw on the stem; 2. the handle bars were off-center; 3. one shifter/brake was positioned higher than the other; 4. the cables were way too long; 5. the rear derailleur was out of tune. so the above problems speak to incompetence and carelessness. My final issue speaks to laziness and dishonesty. I asked them to swap out the 46 cm handlebar for a 44 cm handlebar. They said they would do so. When they gave me the built bike, it seemed as if the bars were wider than they were supposed to be. I asked the mechanic who did the work if they had swapped out the 46 for the 44 and he said they absolutely had. I took them at their word, but a few weeks later I actually measured the bars and found that they had lied to me and had not replaced them. Unfortunately, issues like this are not unique to Quad. My experience with bike shops has been that most mechanics have poor attention to detail. I'm sure they're great when they're working on their own bikes, but with someone else's they simply don't have the motivation to do a comprehensive job. For all my complaints about the service, the owner doesn't deserve to escape without criticism. He seems to be an experienced salesman. He will resort to feigning personal injury when you try to negotiate on price with him, as if you're taking dinner off his children's table. I can certainly appreciate the plight of the local bike shop, but this guy is a little over the top. read more

I called earlier in the day to check if they had a particular Assos jacket, they said yes, even to the size that I asked for. I told them I would need to get up there by biking from Cambridge, and they said take Mass Ave. I biked in the cold and ice all the way to find that they only carried Assos bibs ONLY. No jacket to be found. They didn't even have any winter jackets. They tried to get me to buy one of maybe 50 nasty green QuadCycle jackets plastered with sponsor logos. Gee, I wonder why they were pushing so hard to sell those. RIDICULOUSLY TERRIBLE. The store worker didn't even apologize for the incompetency of whoever was on the phone with me. Since I was there already, I looked around. Their selection was subpar and consisted of mainly mass-produced bikes with pretty paint schemes. I looked around at the prices and I concluded... RIP OFF. These reviews talk about how the customer service is great, but I sure didn't experience great customer service. Another lady buying a unicycle for her son, who called earlier to confirm asking for a very specific gearing and height, was told that they don't carry that item and that the inventory was confused. They then tried to sell one of a different gearing, claiming that they ride unicycles and the gearing she was looking for was not what she wanted. TERRIBLE. read more

I am so disgusted by what a cheat the owner is. I took my bike in for a tune-up and he immediately diagnosed it with a broken shifter and told me that a new shifter would cost $700. My bike was a top of the line model 10 years ago, but I don't ride much these days. He then told me that if I bought a new bike, he could MAYBE credit me with $200 for the frame of my bike. I took my bike to Belmont Wheelworks and several of their mechanics looked at it and told me that I don't need a new shifter at all, that I just need a $69 tune-up (as I originally thought). And, they also told me that if I ever need a new shifter, it costs around $150. I created this account solely to warn others about Quad Cycles. Take your business elsewhere. read more

Every time I've been there, the staff proves knowledgeable and helpful. They are sometimes busy and I have to wait, but that's a good sign. I've bought and repaired bikes there for kids and adults, with some great choices available, and we've also bought some bicycling equipment on occasion. It is refreshing to have a local neighborhood bike shop where service is top notch and the products are as well. My only complaint about the place has been that it is a bit small, but that will soon be taken care of, as they are moving into the old Brattle Pharmacy on Mass. Ave. (about midway between Arlington Heights and Arlington Center). The space is quite a bit bigger, so this should be a good move for them. read more

I recently signed up for a sprint triathlon. In desperate need of a bike, I went to numerous bike shops to try to understand the sport and get a feel for what I would need. Quad Cycles was the only shop that focused on my current experience level in the sport compared to the other shops who just tried selling me anything and everything. Rustem set me up with a bike that was in my price range and experience level. At any bike shop you can buy a bike, but at Quad Cycles Rustem sells relationships as he even invited me to their weekly weekend rides to get acquainted with fellow cyclists. It just shows he has a true passion for the sport and wants to share it with other people. I won't be going to any other bike shop other than this one. read more
