You see old, well-worn wool jerseys hung in on the walls and vintage Bianchi, Pinarello, and DeBernardi bicycles hanging from the ceiling as if to remind you of what kind of shop it really is. This is the shop of yesteryear where you hear the faint smell of oil and hear the local riders discussing their training routes or relaxing after a ride. Then you meet the humble owner who looks at you with that glint in his eye, the one that ensures you that he's going to take care of you. Rustem will look at you but he will not talk at first, but then he will clear his throat and tell you exactly what he thinks. He's akin to an auto mechanic that won't charge you extra for the little things. The noises of the mechanics and the spinning of bike wheels waft throughout the shop as you're guided along to what you need. Never too much and never too little. A careful and occasional glance from the owner as you follow the staff through the rows of bottles, gloves, riding kits, and helmets ensures you that he's trained them well; look them in the eye, they can always come back with questions, and they'll make whatever work for you. I moved to the town of Arlington in 2011 in a small apartment across the shop. Every Sunday I used to see the bright colors of green and blue kits roll out for a group ride and then return in the afternoon with smiles on their faces. So I walked in once, the bell rang at the door, and the owner, Rustem, came to the front of the shop having set aside a wheel he was truing. "You look like you're new here. How can we help?" It's been a humbling and pleasurable experience ever since. And my cup truly runs over. Lastly and in our current times with COVID-19, Rustem and his staff are taking things very seriously. They've implemented a one-customer-at-a-time policy and customers are lined up within 6 feet of one another. A staff member will greet you at the front door, take your payment, bring you your repaired bike, and do a credit card transaction with the utmost consideration of being sterile. Walk into this wonderful world of the way cycling used to be and the way it I now. You will not be disappointed.

He helped me find the exact bikes for my needs and offered to build my top choice so I could test it out (it was a difference size than what they had on the floor). Everything was great until the owner, Charles, came over. He totally tanked the sale. He forbid his employee from taking the bike out of the box and told me I had to drop $1,000 to buy it before I could even sit on it. Unbelievable way to do business. Charles didn't just lose a sale, he lost a local customer who was planning to bring three bikes (including an e-bike) there for service. After meeting the owner I wouldn't trust them not to rip me off. We went to Landry's instead and had a much better experience. Avoid Casa/Amped.

The bike fit also included in-depth pedaling instruction and Ed picked up some bad habits I had and helped me learn what it feels like to have my center of mass in the right place. I came in experiencing shoulder pain during long rides and after the fit session that's almost completely gone away from the combination of adjustments and instruction. Definitely recommend getting a bike fit with Ed for cyclists of any level.

Used to frequent this store years ago. Then went with Hubway/Blue Bikes for a decade. Now have my…read moreown bike again. Needed a new chain, old one felt worn and loose, measurement confirmed it was. Now, I have a Shimano internally geared drivetrain. It looks they choose to install a (1/2 x) 1/8th KMC chain. This is something one can question - the situation seems to be this: multi (derailleur) gear drivetrains, like 6, 7 or 8 speed drivetrains use a 3/32th chain - single speed bikes often use a beefier 1/8th drivetrain with thicker sprockets/chainwheels. Now, Shimano uses 3/32th sprockets for their internally geared hubs. Now, one could pair a 1/8th chainwheel designed for single speed or one of those stylish BMX chainwheels to pair it, that are thicker 1/8th. If one does that, one wants to use a 1/8th chain. However, my bike, like most that was designed for internally geared Shimano hubs, uses a regular 3/32th wide chainwheel that would be compatible with derailleur geared setups as well - Shimano designed it that way, probably to make logistics simple, makes sense to me - go Shimano. Now, why it was decided to install a 1/8th chain - no idea. Reading up says one can install a 1/8th chain on a 3/32th sprocket/chainwheel setup. One can expect a little more wear over the long run on chainwheel and sprocket as it doesn't fit as well in width, maybe also slightly more "noise" (not a problem - if there is, nothing I'd notice) etc.. Ok, so maybe not optimal and I'd expect a store like this to put a "proper" chain on it - it's not that difficult, is it? I suspect money might be a reason, the KMC 1/8th chain is inexpensive, goes for 5.99 on the KMC website, whereas 3/32th chain seem a bit more expensive, maybe because they are longer as they usually come for derailleur setups. I paid the same price ($25 for chain plus approx $20 for installing it) though as a derailleur bike would have been. All of this - may that be as it is, wouldn't necessarily have been a big deal. BUT there was a problem - they didn't use the right "magic"/"missing" link to join/close the chain. I had constant trouble, the chain dropped frequently, originally maybe once a month/3-weeks. I went back to the store and reported - this didn't happen before. They blamed "maybe" the control wire or housing needed replacement causing this. I asked how would that possible have an such an effect? blahblah... 7 month later the chain broke - and it was not the chain itself, it was the missing link - and it broke as in the rivetted axle part broke out of the side piece - it was not that the link came apart at the removable/undone-able side, the link was destroyed. I went back to the store to buy another link as I figured the chain itself seems ok - if I just replace the link I should be good. So I went in and the associated said they don't carry missing links for KMC 1/8th chains. I stated but I had this done here. He responded yes, they sometimes use KMC 1/8th chain, but they don't carry the KMC (or any generic) 1/8th "missing link" joining thing. So I had to buzz off without accomplishing my goal - but I wondered - how is this possible/ They install a chain on my bike that they say they don't have the proper joining thingee for. So I walked to the next bike store (Bike Boom). I went in and asked for a KMC 1/8th missing link - and they had it. Looked completely different from the one that was on my chain. The pin length was different as well - when you take a half of the magic link I had and the double pin portion of the "missing link" and hold them together. I went back into the store and asked - are you sure this is right - this looks completely different from what I had. i had the chain in my bike basked outside the store. The associate came out with me, looked at what I had and said - you have a multi-speed (derailleur) 3/32th link on your chain - that is not the right one. The one I gave you is the right one! Turns out he was right. I installed the chain with the new link he had given me - and all the problems I had before seem to have disappeared. No chain drops anymore. No funny noises/"klonck"s. No (extreme) sensitivity of chain tension apparently related to chain drops anymore - now apparently trouble free operation. This also explains why the link failed and the way it failed and the answer of the attended of not having such a link. So they use the chain and then use a different link for different chain types that kind of initially kind of fits as in it seems to join the chain together, but then causes a lot of operational trouble and prematurely fails. The combined time I wasted with dealing with these failures like chain drops over this 7 month period is probably a day's worth - including the time I went back to the store and reported that something doesn't seem right; I now frequently have problems I didn't have before. To get a bullshit answer and would have incurred additional cost for "bogus" follow ups if I had gone for it.

Said "in stock" and available for pick up in Danvers Tuesday morning or seabrook Wednesday morning. (Danvers was closed Monday). I chose to pick up in seabrook Wednesday since we are in NH and couldn't get down to Danvers Tuesday anyway. My confirmation email said "ships from western cycle" to seabrook location. My receipt was from the Danvers location. I got a call Tuesday at 5:30pm from seabrook saying that they didn't have the bike I ordered in stock at either location. I explained what my confirmation email said and the very sympathetic employee from seabrook said he would call Danvers so see if they had put the bike aside without his knowledge. Danvers was already closed for the day so he offered to call and get back to me in the morning. 10:15 Wednesday I get a call from the owner, with a big attitude, telling me that they don't have the bike. Zero sympathy or compassion for me, the customer. He claims it was in seabrook and must have sold right before I ordered but doesn't know when. I was obviously upset, having ordered Monday and only finding out two days later that they sold me a bike they didn't have. The owner acted annoyed that he even had to call me and said "I don't know what to tell ya". He offered to cancel the order or order the bike (which would come in 7-10 business days), but we are leaving on vacation and needed a bike sooner. He said "sorry" like he was forced to, and was just overall not nice to me. I would recommend Buchika or Philbrick's for your bike needs. Philbricks went above and beyond and legit built a bike for us same day (normally a 2-4 day turn around) so we'd have it for vacation.

Their pricing is probably higher or on par with other spots, but it's the price you pay for the level of focused customer service. With that said, a few notes to be aware of: - they do not carry Trek (space limitations) - it will take time. I figured we'd be in and out, but it's a smaller space so it takes a bit of patience to maneuver within - budget an hour or so if you have a confident rider and know what you want, more if tentative - the folks all seemed like they were working their darnedest to keep everyone happy and taken care of - you don't get that every where nowadays. There were 2-3 families each time we dropped by, so it's a hidden local gem. Help keep our communities local and visit spots like this instead of the big box retailers.

But they completely messed up shipping my bike to California for a long distance trip (I gave specific directions for the date it needed to arrive - they let my bike sit in the shop for three days and then shipped it the slowest possible way - it did NOT ARRIVE IN TIME FOR MY TRIP!!) They took NO responsibility for any of this. Sometimes they act as if you count for nothing if you are not a "serious" cyclist. I've been ignored, demeaned, talked down to, walked away from. Shawn at SMC Cycles is amazing…read more Shawn repaired four different bikes with four different problems and did an outstanding job. He was able to quickly diagnose each bike's problem and miraculously fix all of our bikes. Since Shawn was able to repair all of the bikes, no new bikes needed to be purchased and this saved us $$$$. This is the first time we used Shawn and his mobile bike repair service and we will never go to a retail bike store for bike repairs again. Putting four bikes in a car would have been a huge hassle; requiring multiple trips to the bike store. Shawn did all of the repairs right on our driveway and the entire "experience" was flawless and much, much better than going to the bike store. All of our bikes ride great now and we highly recommend Shawn at SMC Cycles. Thank you, Shawn.

I had paid hundreds in the past for a tune-up and new tires. Shawn replaced the handlebars, chain and all the shifting mechanisms and restored it back to rideable condition! He responded immediately to my inquiry and communicated regularly, sending me cost estimates along the way, which were a fraction of what I would've paid at the previous shop I used in Boston. Visited this place in October with a coworker we both bought Segway scooters for our commute to…read morework. My coworker took his right on the spot. Mine wasn't ready. I was told to come back tomorrow. I tried calling the next day, but nobody answered the phone so I showed up they didn't remember me. I told him I had purchased a scooter yesterday with my coworker, and then they went to look for it and they said it still wasn't ready and they needed to charge it . I came back the following day called again. No answer showed up didn't know who I was again reminded him an went to get my scooter ready for me to take one problem, though there was no charger with the brand new scooter. He could not find it. So he gave me a charger from behind the counter fast forward to today, May 5, 2026. I tried calling again no answer so I drove in. Doors were locked. Lights are on went to the front and back entrance. No sign of anyone one last check I see the guy who sold me the scooter in the window. I motion to him to come over. He comes over. he lets me in. I tell him about my scooter, he tells me to bring it in. I told him the back brake is no longer working, and my rear tire was making a grinding noise. He told me I could leave it to fill out my information before leaving. I asked him when he thought somebody would be able to take a look at it and he told me about a month. He stated the technician wasn't in today and that they had a backlog of scooters that needed to be repaired, which he pointed to in the corner and then told me there was multiple down in the basement of the same model. I told him that wasn't an option for me to wait over a month and that the scooter is still under warranty for another five months he tried to refer me to a scooter shop in Cambridge, which I live nowhere near and not paying for something that was under warranty. I then asked him what to do and he told me to call Segway the scooter company. And then again referred me to the scooter shop in Cambridge, which I had to reiterate that was not an option and I am not paying for something that is still under warranty. I asked him for Segway's number which he told me he did not have and to "Google it". My only dealings with this place twice have not been good and not the best customer service to say the least. Scooters were $1100 with tax and are under warranty for another five months and they are telling me I have to wait over a month to even get it looked at. Unacceptable!

Because of the misunderstanding they offered us a 50% discount for the future, which we were excited to use. We planned another trip up and when I called, Steve advised me to book the reservation and he'd apply the discount afterwards. We rented 2 e-bikes for $200, and had a nice day riding around the north shore. At the time we picked them up, Steve mentioned that he owed us the discount. We dropped them off at the end of the day and everything seemed good. Unfortunately it was never applied I've heard zilch from Steve since then. I've emailed multiple times about it and gotten no response. At this point it's been a month. Presumably since we've paid he just doesn't care? In the end, we had been willing to pay full price the first time around, but it's really disappointing to get a bait-and-switch like this.
