After trying to actually ride one however, I soon realized that with my short little legs, and mediocre biking skills, I was never going to feel comfortable pedaling a tall Dutch Bike up the hills in my home of San Francisco. Coincidentally, my first stop back in the US was Boston, where I had heard they imported a variety of Dutch Bikes and decided to stop in. Although I was told that they were stepping away from their import business, Dan, the proprietor introduced me to a viable alternative in the Lady Swift Bike produced by DBC. Completely hand built, and custom tailored to your specs in New England (with most parts manufactured stateside), this bike is the perfect mix of great engineering and good design. As someone with a design and production background, I fully understand that the R&D that went into developing this bike is not easy to come by domestically, but that DBC has really accomplished something wonderful here. Dan was incredibly passionate about his bikes and the people behind it. After test riding, I absolutely knew why. I've spent a lot of time on bikes that weren't right for me, just because they usually aren't built to fit people like me. However, the Lady Swift was the smoothest, most balanced and comfortable ride I have ever had the pleasure of taking. For posterity's sake, my bike saavy boyfriend also test rode the bike and agreed wholeheartedly. The bikes start at $2500, and include a custom built frame, engineered and painted to your specs, beautiful rust proof components, and internal shifting mechanisms. The full specs can be found on their site, but all I can say is that the final product is one very nice bike, and in my opinion, a downright steal considering the custom fabrication that goes into the bikes. Dan needs $1500 up front to start the work, and has a lifetime guarantee on the bikes. If you aren't happy for whatever reason, send the bike back for your full money back. DBC would rather that you love your bike, than regret your purchase. Unfortunately I did not have that kind of extra scratch kicking around at the time (quitting your job and traveling for an entire summer kind of does that to you) but Dan has my specs on file and was fully understanding about me holding off until I did have the money to front. However, acquiring one of these fine bikes is at the top of my priorities list. From a business perspective, DBC is top rate, and my personal interaction with Dan was extremely positive. As a Bostonian, he was a very enthusiastic guy who genuinely loves his product and his city. He even went so far as to suggest places for us to visit while we were in town and gave us his card to call him if we needed any tips on where to eat. That all said, I can't review the quality of DBC's tune-ups or really ignore the elephant in the living room that is Chris P's review below, but quite frankly, I don't necessarily think that tune-ups would be their forte, nor give a crap why/how/if that incident happened and I don't think it is my, or anyone's business to be the judge of things that happen in a proprietor's personal life here. All I can really say is that I cannot wait to get my hands on one of these jaunty little rides.

He helped me find the exact bikes for my needs and offered to build my top choice so I could test it out (it was a difference size than what they had on the floor). Everything was great until the owner, Charles, came over. He totally tanked the sale. He forbid his employee from taking the bike out of the box and told me I had to drop $1,000 to buy it before I could even sit on it. Unbelievable way to do business. Charles didn't just lose a sale, he lost a local customer who was planning to bring three bikes (including an e-bike) there for service. After meeting the owner I wouldn't trust them not to rip me off. We went to Landry's instead and had a much better experience. Avoid Casa/Amped.

From the easy to use website with up to date information, to the person answering the phones who knew exactly what was in stock and had the bike I was interested in locked up outside ready for me to ride, it was an absolute pleasure to buy a new bike with zero snags. The selection in this store is much bigger than it might first appear- they're known for cargo bikes and an increasingly large supply of electric cargos, but they have kid's balance bikes and the lovely step through commuter bike in the pic, too. Their website is very easy to search for what you want in advance. You can also get all the things you need to put your new bike in use from racks, bags, baskets, bells, gear, and safety supplies. It was fast and easy to select high quality items and they attached it all so my bike was done and ready to take home that day. Another huge advantage over the first time I bought a perfect bike- bike lanes! You can try your new bike in a safe bike lane before cutting back to the store on a side street then a less well traveled road. Gives you a little descent, little bumpiness, and a little ascent so you can get a real feel for the bike. I love that there's no pressure, just a plan to help you find what works best for you. So happy with my purchase!

Well unless you are one of those super cool bikers that built and painted their own bike, my bike is TOTALLY cooler ;) I bought my bike from Telca and Monet, two awesome women who run Jolly Bike, a small company out of Arlington that imports Gazelle bikes RIGHT from Amsterdam and sells them at summer festivals in Boston! So what REALLY makes my bike cool? For starters, its a girly bike, with a fully covered chain, so I can easily wear dresses, skirts or cute coats without having to worry about anything getting caught. Then, the bike lock is built in! It just locks the wheels in place and I take away the key, which is awesome since I hate carrying a lock while riding! Its a little heavy, but its worth if for all the features! Oh, and did I mention my bike is bright green? I guess Gazelle the company only makes a set number in REALLY cool colors like purple, green, orange! And then Monet custom paints the the colorful side panels for you with WHATEVER you want! I currently have the ones it came with from last summer, red with flowers, but I am getting them to paint me new ones this summer! So really, I have LOVE for all bikes! I am sure, as long as your love yours, its just as cool as mine! But mine is pretty cool ;)

Used to frequent this store years ago. Then went with Hubway/Blue Bikes for a decade. Now have my…read moreown bike again. Needed a new chain, old one felt worn and loose, measurement confirmed it was. Now, I have a Shimano internally geared drivetrain. It looks they choose to install a (1/2 x) 1/8th KMC chain. This is something one can question - the situation seems to be this: multi (derailleur) gear drivetrains, like 6, 7 or 8 speed drivetrains use a 3/32th chain - single speed bikes often use a beefier 1/8th drivetrain with thicker sprockets/chainwheels. Now, Shimano uses 3/32th sprockets for their internally geared hubs. Now, one could pair a 1/8th chainwheel designed for single speed or one of those stylish BMX chainwheels to pair it, that are thicker 1/8th. If one does that, one wants to use a 1/8th chain. However, my bike, like most that was designed for internally geared Shimano hubs, uses a regular 3/32th wide chainwheel that would be compatible with derailleur geared setups as well - Shimano designed it that way, probably to make logistics simple, makes sense to me - go Shimano. Now, why it was decided to install a 1/8th chain - no idea. Reading up says one can install a 1/8th chain on a 3/32th sprocket/chainwheel setup. One can expect a little more wear over the long run on chainwheel and sprocket as it doesn't fit as well in width, maybe also slightly more "noise" (not a problem - if there is, nothing I'd notice) etc.. Ok, so maybe not optimal and I'd expect a store like this to put a "proper" chain on it - it's not that difficult, is it? I suspect money might be a reason, the KMC 1/8th chain is inexpensive, goes for 5.99 on the KMC website, whereas 3/32th chain seem a bit more expensive, maybe because they are longer as they usually come for derailleur setups. I paid the same price ($25 for chain plus approx $20 for installing it) though as a derailleur bike would have been. All of this - may that be as it is, wouldn't necessarily have been a big deal. BUT there was a problem - they didn't use the right "magic"/"missing" link to join/close the chain. I had constant trouble, the chain dropped frequently, originally maybe once a month/3-weeks. I went back to the store and reported - this didn't happen before. They blamed "maybe" the control wire or housing needed replacement causing this. I asked how would that possible have an such an effect? blahblah... 7 month later the chain broke - and it was not the chain itself, it was the missing link - and it broke as in the rivetted axle part broke out of the side piece - it was not that the link came apart at the removable/undone-able side, the link was destroyed. I went back to the store to buy another link as I figured the chain itself seems ok - if I just replace the link I should be good. So I went in and the associated said they don't carry missing links for KMC 1/8th chains. I stated but I had this done here. He responded yes, they sometimes use KMC 1/8th chain, but they don't carry the KMC (or any generic) 1/8th "missing link" joining thing. So I had to buzz off without accomplishing my goal - but I wondered - how is this possible/ They install a chain on my bike that they say they don't have the proper joining thingee for. So I walked to the next bike store (Bike Boom). I went in and asked for a KMC 1/8th missing link - and they had it. Looked completely different from the one that was on my chain. The pin length was different as well - when you take a half of the magic link I had and the double pin portion of the "missing link" and hold them together. I went back into the store and asked - are you sure this is right - this looks completely different from what I had. i had the chain in my bike basked outside the store. The associate came out with me, looked at what I had and said - you have a multi-speed (derailleur) 3/32th link on your chain - that is not the right one. The one I gave you is the right one! Turns out he was right. I installed the chain with the new link he had given me - and all the problems I had before seem to have disappeared. No chain drops anymore. No funny noises/"klonck"s. No (extreme) sensitivity of chain tension apparently related to chain drops anymore - now apparently trouble free operation. This also explains why the link failed and the way it failed and the answer of the attended of not having such a link. So they use the chain and then use a different link for different chain types that kind of initially kind of fits as in it seems to join the chain together, but then causes a lot of operational trouble and prematurely fails. The combined time I wasted with dealing with these failures like chain drops over this 7 month period is probably a day's worth - including the time I went back to the store and reported that something doesn't seem right; I now frequently have problems I didn't have before. To get a bullshit answer and would have incurred additional cost for "bogus" follow ups if I had gone for it.
