Broadway Bicycle is located near Central Square and is few blocks away from the main traffic, which is why I didn't see this shop when passing by. I only knew of this because it was recommended to me by another shop that was completely booked. It's a small shop, but the crew made good use of the space. They have few technicians on deck, and one that I spoke to is very knowledgeable, nice, and honest about which repairs were needed. Also, they were so sweet and took time from their busy schedule to do minor adjustments to my bike. I tipped them and out I go feeling way better riding my bike! read more

Brought my bike which I bought for 450 dollars last year for a tune up. Ended up paying almost 500 dollars for the tune up (which I will say included a new wheel and tire) but as I was riding away from the shop the wheel that was replaced wasn't properly tightened down and slipped out, a very dangerous mistake which I wish had been seen considering I paid 500 dollars for a bike tune up. They fixed mistake when I brought it back. I would seriously consider just doing the work yourself. read more

I went in to have a cheap bike serviced. I was told that it was not worth it to repair that bike, and that instead, I should just buy a new bike. Not what I came there for! I would expect a real bike head to actually offer to help their fellow biker by fixing the bike. I just needed my brake fixed (I don't have the tools to do this myself), but apparently that's too much to ask for in this overpriced overhyped bike "school." read more

I got a flat fixed at Broadway Bicycles about 3 weeks ago with a tire that I was told was flat resistant. Not only has that tire since popped but the staff that was putting on the tire aggressively told me that they popped 3 separate tubes trying replace my tire and insinuated it was my fault. Experiences I've had here: -sales person refuses to order me small Ortlieb parts that have broken on my panniers -mechanic refuses to add front derailleur issue to my work order -mechanic doesn't tighten down my wheel lock so that when I walk with my bike over the curb the front wheel falls out; when I go back to the shop they don't apologize for this super dangerous mistake -I ask to get an annual tune up and they refuse and only offer me a la carte services Try a different bike shop. read more

Get ready for some fresh steamy micro aggressions. In typical fashion of any quick handed mechanic I came with one problem and left with four. I needed a tire replaced (something I could obviously do myself but I've used this store for over 15 years not that anyone would know because of their constant turnaround). I stepped away and when I came back, low and beyond my seat was pointing up nose in the air (not unlike the manager I was talking to). I tried to be polite about it because ultimately just about anything is manageable but she said "we're not racist here." Okay... why did you just say that? Obviously they intentionally damaged my seat to damage my "seat" in a way only a male could feel. (good thing my "seat" Is made of brass). Anyway terrible will never be back there. read more

Great experience here. I own an old bike and it wasn't riding great and I was looking for a basic tune up. I live in the north end of Boston and I first took it to the local shop, Urban Cycles. I told the staff at Urban Cycles that I'm a casual rider and just needed a few adjustments to help the bike ride a little smoother. They told me the tune up was gonna cost $290. Since I paid $175 total for the tuned up bicycle a year ago, I thought that price was pretty steep. So then I called Broadway Bicycles. First, they were very nice on the phone. The person on the phone told me to bring my bike down so they could take a look. I let 'em know what I was lookin for, they gave me a quote, fixed it up in 2 days and now it rides good as new, all for $90 bucks. Saved me $200. Thanks guys!! read more

I agree with previous Yelpers that what we have here are microaggressive hipsters. I entered the store September 13, 2022 and was asked to wear a mask, "unless you have a problem with that". This is 2022, not 2020. How close was my bike mechanic planning to get to me anyway? What Cambridge bike store doesn't have a bit of attitude, I get it, but this was too much, even for me. I was traveling into work recently, got about 5 to 10 minutes away from my house and my front tire went flat. I was far enough that it didn't really make sense to walk my bike back to my house, but it was still fairly early and I wasn't sure any place would be open soon enough to fix my flat. A quick search on yelp and Broadway Bicycle School popped up - opening at 8am! I walked my bike back to their shop, locked it outside and got some breakfast while I waited 20 minutes for them to open, and then rolled it in promptly when doors opened. 15 minutes later, my bike was good to go and I was on my way back to work. Staff was friendly, competent, and prices were good. Location was also very convenient, being well-situated to the Camberville border. Thankful they keep early hours and have good people at the helm. I totally forgot my roomate had a wreck in my sweet ride. My tuneup price changed dramatically, but they kept in GREAT touch with me and got my baby fixed under the time quoted. Really great customer service here! I had gotten a flat in my bike and they quickly fixed it up. The guy who fixed the flat showed us how to do is so that we could try ourselves. A week later I had a flat in the same tire and brought the bike back. The guy was super nice and charged less for us to get a new wheel! Courteous employees and quick service with decent prices. I appreciate that this enterprise represents itself as coop/worker-owned and that it is staffed by competent mechanics, female as much as male. BUT over the years, I have come to realize that, more often than not, they have a rather condescending attitude and they are certainly comparatively overpriced. The straw that broke the bicycle's back, so to speak was when they replaced the rear tire with a non-conforming valve different from the front tire--and that without telling me. No readily available tire pump fit the valve, not even the one in front of the Broadway Bicycle School storefront itself. All of this I only discovered some months later when I had a flat. The explanation that was then given was that the regular valve had not been available due to Covid and that now I would have to pay for the valve to be properly replaced! Rather than argue the point, I agreed. But I won't forget and from now on, I'll be sure to go elsewhere coop/worker owned, female staffed or not! read more

I've been using my bike a lot; Broadway has quickly and carefully made the repairs and offered helpful answers and suggestions (I am pretty clueless about my reliable and aging bike). This review is long overdue. My husband and I stopped by here on a nice early February day to look at bikes. They had a great little selection outside the store, and someone came out to help us right away. We got to do some test riding and my husband liked his Brooklyn bike, and I ended up deciding on getting a Marin bike. Colin, who was super nice helped us out. We both had fenders and racks installed, which only took a few days. After a month you get a complimentary tune up in case your brakes or shifting need adjustments. It only takes a few days or so for them to do this, and then you receive a text and email from them letting you know that your bike is ready. Every person we've dealt with in the store is just great . . . I simply can't recommend them enough. I'm grateful to have a nice bike to enjoy now, thanks to Broadway Bicycle School! read more

sign says knock and someone will help. They did not. Eventually by physically blocking the door I forced them to acknowledge me. They couldn't help me put my crate back on back without the bolts that came w it (guess they don't have bolts?). so I had to ride home carrying it and all my shit. i would have gladly paid for zip ties at least. then they wouldn't adjust my hanlde bars. cool hipsters tho! read more

I walked in on a Saturday afternoon and was met with quick service and super friendly staff! I ended up needing a new tube and wheel. They said it would take about an hour and were finished within 30 minutes! Prices were fair and I didn't feel like they were trying to sell me on anything. Highly recommend! read more

Basically, they are too busy and they charge a lot for labour. Like, I go in to get my brakes quickly fixed, it's a 30 min wait to get seen, then they tell me I need all this other stuff doing, then they quote me $150-$200, then they tell me I can get my bike back in 13 days time (!) Okay - so that's not all their fault. They're just too popular with people who don't do basic fixes themselves and have the money - fairweather cyclists. What annoyed me though was the slight attitude I got when I just asked for the parts and said I'd do it myself. They should be above that. -------------OLD REVIEW--------------------- Not a chance in hell that I'll be the first person not to give this place 5 stars. I've been cycling to school, college, university, work all my life and have never found a better bicycle shop.... even in Cambridge, England where there are more bicycles than people. read more

Dear Broadway Bicycle School, Was it something I said? I thought we had a real nice first date, the start of a summer fling as I got my red beater put together for the hot summer. That gem named Matt took good care of me: helped me slap my old fender back on, tighten up a few loose spots, gave me a few pointers, and undercharged me to boot. Heck, he didn't even make fun of me when I repeatedly turned the nut the wrong way. I went home with a glow -- the start of something special. I told my mother about you, and I penciled you in for next week. So I guess I just don't understand what happened the second time around. I brought my girlfriend in to meet you. Maybe we didn't look the part, having neglected our large gauge ear plugs and tattoo with the Scrabble tiles spelling "B-I-C-Y-C-L-E." Maybe I shouldn't have worn those khaki shorts, and my girlfriend certainly shouldn't have worn that skirt. What else could explain that sanctimonious little performance, BBS? Could it have been the sixty-dollar Craig's List cruiser that my girlfriend brought in, requesting a look-over? "You could just pick up something new at Wal-Mart," your friendly employee sneered, the big box store spit out like a bad taste. I'm so sorry, Broadway Bicycle, if I did something to hurt you. Really now, if I wanted to review this place less as than perfect I'd be stoned. Luckily, my experience was first rate. I walked in there a bit timid with my little vintage Peugeot, as it's not a cool fixty and I'm not a cool biker. There were four bikes on the racks being worked on, five guys in the shop and a lady. Of course I approached the chick. After explaining to them how I had attempted to fix the problem myself (the handlebars moved separately from the front wheel), she kindly showed me what to tighten but acknowledged that the tools were rare. And while we discussed new seat options (as the original had been hurting my delicate bum) one of the guys gave it a quick test and got it working perfectly. His advice towards repairs/replacements were timely, sound, reasonable and not the slightest bit condescending. Since I had places to go, I opted for the seat (a lovely old school leather Brooks) which they installed and adjusted for my height. All together a lovely experience; I'll return to change the tires. read more

All I wanted to do was fix a flat. Fine, they sell me a tube, but then want to charge by the 5 minute increment for loaner tools. No, you cannot use the tools outside. You have to use them on the stand, in the shop (presumably because you might steal them), which you also have to rent by the 5 minute increment. I couldn't remember how to do the final step, but to get help, you have to pay by the minute. Otherwise, the response is a stony, "I don't know." Well, thanks to the "I don't know", I had a flat again the next week. Thanks guys! Now, if you went to a real neighborhood bike store, they would loan you the loaner tools for free. They would give you small parts (like that plug that goes in the end of the handle bar) for free. They would try to build a relationship, so when you wanted to buy your new bike, you'd come to them. So why did I go to Broadway to fix my flat? It's two blocks away, but Ace Wheelworks on Elm St (my "neighborhood" bike store) was just to far to carry my Bianchi. For those of you who still think that "full tune-ups" exist for bikes, you're on the wrong planet. All reputable shops charge just for the work performed and tell you what they're doing ahead of time. read more

Broadway Bicycle School is one of my favorite places to be, period. I do all my own work, and for nine years Broadway has been a home away from home. If I can't do it on a sidewalk with my small toolkit, I'll do it at Broadway. They have "self-help" rates of $9/hr to use a bike stand and their army of first-class tools (ask first!), used part bins servicing bikes from the last 50 years, cabinet after cabinet of new parts, a very smart selection of practical city bicycles (including a few offerings from local framebuilders), an even smarter staff of helpful, greasy, happy ladies and gentlemen, and prices to compete with anywhere. It should be noted that Broadway specializes in internal gear (e.g. three-speed), singlespeed and fixed gear bicycles; they sell and service derailed gears too, but the cyclist will find uncommon expertise in the above. Most bicycles sold at Broadway are intended for urban use; no carbon racing bikes or freeride monsters hanging on the wall here. It can also be said that there are worse places to look for cute, highly bikey women! Aside from an occasional jot to Cambridge Bicycles or Paramount when Broadway is closed and I need a tube five minutes ago, all other bike shops in metro Boston are dead to me. I've been next door neighbours with these folks for 12+ yrs and, having been biking all along I had to stop by in the past and granted, I have been unhappy before. But after today I can't hold back anymore. I came in to ask if they would tune my son's brakes. As with other times in the past it starts with... "I see a lot of things going over here..." and "this is a cheap bike, may not be worthwhile.. brake pads alone are 20$ per wheel... and you may need new cables etc" Well, ok, so how much? "let me get my calculator"... ... "it's going to be above 100$" OK, at another bike store 0.5 miles away, the same bike just looked like "a bike", not a project, and well, new cables were 25$ and the pads 12.50$ for BOTH brakes, and the grand total was less than 40$. I don't care how cool your tattoes, signs or sandals are. Respectfully, you are just fixing bikes. And your charging 250% more than other places. Regular folks, including your neighbours, deserve to know that they need to shop around. Folks, stay away! read more

I love this place! The staff couldn't be any better. They make you feel ok that you don't know anything about bikes, or they help you out if you think you know a lot about them. You can use their tools if you actually know what you are doing. You can drop your bike off for repair and pick it up in perfect condition not knowing a thing , or they will teach you so you can give it the proper upkeep. I bought my beloved 60's Hercules here 10 years ago and it's still a great working beauty. They even made custom handlebars for me. I think it's also a pretty cheap place to get the repairs done, or to buy a new/used bike! TWO HUGE THUMBS UP!!!! read more

Every time I've had a problem, they've pretty much told me how to fix it and then sold me the necessary parts for 2 bucks. I am a novice biker. I rode my bike up through sophomore year of high school, and then left it neglected for about 6 years, to the point where I needed to invest in a new bike. Please note this review is about the service at Broadway Bicycle School. Last summer I bought a Vienna Globe at Ace Wheelworks. I wish I had lived closer to Broadway Bike then, I like them so much now I want to give them as much of my money as possible. That being said, I have not paid for a cent of service at Broadway Bicycle School. Their consultations and pep talks should charge by the minute, but alas, they are generous with their advice and want you to come back for real monetary needs. So within a couple of months of riding more regularly, I stopped by Broadway Bike and got a quick couple of tips to keep my bike in shape. There was no judgement at my ignorance, and lots of practical information shared. Now that I ride my bike about 3-4 times a week to work, my tires really needed some TLC. On my way into the city this week, I noticed that Broadway Bike was up and running, at 8:15am! So I stopped in to express all the exertion it was taking for me to get over the Longfellow Bridge. I thought I would get a tune up scheduled, but being that it's a busy time, I was told they were booked for the next week. So plan ahead if you want a tune up. Or wait until it's been rainy. Anyway, they took a look at my bike very thoroughly, for about 5 minutes, and determined that it wasn't quite time for a tune up. I got my chains greased, all the gears checked out, and my breaks were checked too. They also filled my tires with air (which has made all the difference - lesson learned) and told me there's a free air compressor available in front of the shop! I was advised to wait for a tune up, given it's usually around $60 and at this point it would be worth it. Broadway Bicycle School is an honest business, truly looking out for your best interest. So don't be shy, go in there, ask any question you may have. I guarantee you won't sound nearly as silly as me. They are super friendly, down to earth, and best of all HELPFUL! I will be riding back to Cambridge the second my bike is ready for a tune-up. read more

The staff here are marvelous -- friendly, budget-conscious, and knowledgeable. I had to take my bike in recently to address a weird noise, and within ten minutes they'd pinpointed the problem -- it was going to require some work that would have to be scheduled. The guy who was looking at my bike, Jason, gave me a detailed break-down about the likely cost, and then went over the bike to identify other things that ought to be addressed (I ride my bike a lot!) -- brake pads, cables, chain. The estimate was getting pricey, and so Jason helped me to prioritize what really needed attention and what could wait a bit. He took the time to explain the problems and the likely effects of letting things go too long. His patience allowed me to make informed decisions, which I really appreciated. They fixed the noise problem. And soon enough I'll be back to have the chain and brake pads replaced. These guys are awesome! read more

I took the beginner bike repair class here this spring and it was great. I've always hated changing tire tubes and it ends up taking 40 minutes more than it should, but they showed me how I was doing it wrong for years. Now I can change a tube in less than 10 minutes. I can't speak for their repair services, but the instructors were really knowledgeable and helpful. Some bike shop peeps can be bike snobby, but I didn't get that vibe from any of them. read more

This is mostly for service and maintenance. The key (like with many places) is to stop in when they are not slammed. It's tricky but if you're flexible and can come in on a weekday or something they will put your bike up on the bench and talk to you about what they see in terms you can understand if you don't have a tattoo of a single-speed crank on your leg. I would normally dread going into bike shops for the same reason I dread going to a car mechanic: I have no idea what I'm talking about and they know it. At broadway everyone I have interacted with explained everything and didn't push me into anything. I ended up going back and taking the basic maintenance class. Jason is a great teacher. And now i get 10% off! I'm a lifer. read more

I moved here recently and was looking for a local bicycle shop. A friend recommended Broadway Bicycle School. I had read some reviews on Yelp about the shop. Some were laudatory and others critical because they felt the hipster quotient was too high. I won't argue with the hipster statement. It's true, they are, however, it was also the best bike shop experience I've ever had. If you're looking for high end road bikes or overpriced fixies, this isn't the place for it. If you're looking for incredibly helpful service and a store that has a vested interest in the community, then go here. They will go over every single repair suggested or made on your bike and explain why it should be done. They are fairly priced, as well. Even better they have loads of spare parts for cheap. I bought a stem for $7 that otherwise would have cost $50-$60 new. What I appreciated even more was that they welcomed me to Cambridge and have solidified that this is my new bike shop. I can't believe that I haven't written a review of Broadway Bikes yet. I bought my beautiful 925 single speed bike here about a year ago now - and had one of the best bike shop experiences of my life. In a former life (aka high school) I worked as a part time bike mechanic and salesperson at a bike shop in my hometown - I know my way around and always hated going into a lot of bike shops that were dominated by men who thought that women knew nothing about bikes and just wanted a pretty step through with wicker baskets attached (not hating - i love them too!) - but these guys aren't those guys/gals at all. They were extremely helpful - walked me through how much easier life was going to be for me without all the gears on maintenance - and encouraged me to stop back whenever for tutorials (at a small price of course). I love the idea of renting bike stand space and tools and getting to tweak my bike to my preferences (I am a little particular about the amount of tension my brakes have). I haven't gotten a chance to get in for a tune-up yet, but I rest easy knowing that I am going back to this incredible Bike Shop. read more

I can't speak for Broadway Bicycle School's mechanical quality, but when I'm in need of a random used part, this is the place I turn to. Having a spare parts bin is extremely helpful for riders who are knowledgeable enough to work on bikes themselves, but don't want/need to drop huge sums of cash on the latest "crabon" fiber component. Sometimes, a bunch of bins filled with parts recycled from old bikes is just what you need. And BBS delivers. One time in mid February, I stopped by the shop to pick up some old crank arms, ring, and pedals for a friend, and when the woman was ringing me up, she quoted a set of parts at around $20. When I was a bit reluctant to pay that much, she let me name my price (half that) considering it was the winter and they don't really have any need for the stuff they keep around. All in all, a good deal. I got what I needed for a decent price, and the shop made a bit of profit. I'll be back here again. read more

I actually went to Cambridge Bicycle first and stood there looking at bikes for 5 to 10 minutes and NO ONE came over to greet me or help me find a good bike. I went right over to Broadway Bicycle School and was greeted the second I stepped in the door. Within about half an hour I had a bike all picked out, seat changed, kick stand added and bike lock purchased. They offer a free tune-up within the first 30 days as well. The guy who helped me (I think his name was Matt?) was also pretty darn cute. :) read more

I like this bike shop for several reasons: 1. It's located near Central Square, and I love any excuse to hang out there. 2. I noticed a ton of bicyclists in the area and I suspect it's because of this shop, which educates and services many current and potential bikers. 3. The staff are knowledgeable, friendly, and don't pressure you to buy a bike. 4. They offer quality used bikes, and I bought one of them. 5. They encourage follow-up care of your bike by offering "free" follow-up care. 6. They have different hours in the week to accommodate different work schedules. Though I wish they would sometimes open a little earlier than 8 am, but I'm sure that wouldn't be popular with the staff. Come on, guys, how about 7:45? read more

* Difficult to schedule work within a month of showing up with bike. * Didn't put the correct rim on my bike. I asked for a matching black rim, but they went with chrome. It would have had to wait too long to make the correction. * In a separate instance, they told my friend who isn't mechanically inclined that she should buy a new bike from them instead of repairing her present bike. Turned out her problem was very simple to repair, so simple they wouldn't even identify it. * Didn't make the proper adjustments to return my bike to my seat height, left a brake undone. These may seem like petty complaints, but in a bike repair place, I would expect that they would be diligent to repair it the way I want it. I recommend other local places instead of Broadway Bicycle School. read more

This place is old school. Not really the best place if you want high end parts and gear, but they will teach how to fix your bike which is, if nothing else, empowering. They're super crunchy, so you'll feel like you're making the world a better place too. Don't get me wrong, I'm all about the Bikes and not the Bombs, but it's funny, this place feels like the old hippie Cambridge which has just about completely disappeared. I once crashed into a parked car (long story, I was going the wrong way and avoided an unwitting pedestrian at the last second) and bent my fork. They actually had a tool that allowed me to bend it back into shape. Seriously, they're good people. You don't find this kind of place anymore. And now, just as I'm about to submit this review with a misleading four stars, I'm switching to five cause I feel like a jerk for giving them anything less. What a great shop. The first time I went in there I was looking for a used bike, and truly, they didn't have anything in my price range. No prob. Fast forward a year later, and I'm in the neighborhood, looking for chain lube. Sure, they recommend the more expensive one first, but quickly show the $5 alternative, explaining that I probably don't need the big-bucks slightly-eco-friendlier one. Thanks! The real motivation for this review came this afternoon. The saddle on my bike was in sorry shape, and I'd been to a different local establishment to find a replacement, but had been treated kind of condescendingly and wanted somewhere that would let me test-drive the thing. And, the seatpost was way too short, so needed a new one of that. The guy at Broadway was awesome. Saw me staring a little confusedly, took a walk over to look at my bike to find something appropriate, and pulled out two saddles to try. Also CUSTOM CUT a seatpost with a hacksaw and filed it down for me because my bike's quirky like that and needed a shorter-than-average post. Awesome. Slapped the seat on, I took a test-ride...so-so. Went in, swapped in the other seat, took another test ride. No. Got the first saddle back on, decided it was the one, and that was that. The saddle wasn't the cheapest, but he made it all work, and in the end, even undercharged me! An upstanding bicycle shop. read more
