Bought 3 expensive specialty bikes here. The bike quality is top notch and price is correct, but the after sale follow up was nul. I expressed how important it was for me to get our toddler geared up on a trailer, and we needed a thru axel so that we could connect the Liv to a trailer, but week after week I just got the run around. During the sale, Brian said that it's a community - not just sales. That turned out not to be true. Had to go to another dealer of Liv bikes to get a thru axel ordered and then finally could get a burley trailer to pull the kido. After 5 weeks we finally started enjoying our biking summer together as a family. read more

It the kind of service received at their shop today that makes you say, "Yes, this business needs a good Yelp review," and yes, you should go here to speak to knowledgeable and cool people, without the hipper-than-thou attitude that some folks complain about. It may very well be that they *are* hipper-than-thou, but for sure, they are pleasant and good natured. Even though my toolbox is filled with a good bit of tools, and can handle a most of my own bike repairs, there are some problems that require expertise, and this shop has it. They were able to fix a recalcitrant shifter with their vast knowledge base (and the right sort of fluids - note that it was not 3-in-1, WD-40, or any oil based lubricant - it was amazing to see how things were fixed). There are plenty of bike shops around, but if you want be treated right, go here. For those of you who have had a bad experience, this may be due to the fact that yes, they sometimes can get busy. My suggestion is to call ahead and find out when their shop is less crowded. read more

JRA catches the vibe of a cool bike shop and hangs it on the wall alongside an excellent selection of the top of the line bikes you see in magazines, and all the accessories, helmets and gear that you need. In the middle of all this is a busy mechanics' pit. Everyone that works there has been great to work with. The only downside is the location. I love the shop, but hate the parking. read more

The staff there is very disrespectful. I went there and stood in line, I got up to the employee I asked him am I allowed to go in the store and browse around, he said no, I said ok I guess there's really no point for me to be here (I didn't want to bother you), he replied with a disrespect attitude/ tone are you familiar with the pandemic?) I replied with a simple YES and walked away. Your not supposed to reply to your costumers like that he could've just said no sir I'm sorry but we are trying to take Precautions because of the pandemic. But he had to used a disrespectful attitude. Well we completely understand the situation we are going through the same way but if you have a store that is OPEN but customers can't come in why bother to open. You don't go to Target, CVS Home Depot and other stores and they don't let you in, What are they thinking? Their store is special. The store has to take precautions to welcome YOU and if YOU decide to have it at curbside that's is your choice not THEIRS. I'll tell you what demand is on their side. I have tried all the bike shops along the north shore above Boston. There are a lot of good ones, a couple questionable ones but of them all,JRA is hands down the best. They carry great brands and recommend higher quality bikes that will cost a little more but they really last and they stand by them. These days, due to Covid, everything related to bikes is crazy. Bike stores have no inventory, service appointments are backed up for weeks (if not months), etc. However, JRA Cycles is a rare bright spot. Back in early October, I made a service appointment for a tune-up and a minor repair. The appointment was for late October. To my surprise, I received an email a few days later that they could take my bike 2 weeks earlier than scheduled! I brought it in and consulted with one of their mechanics; he patiently and thoroughly explained work he was planning to do, helped me understand my options, shared some honest opinions, and gave me some great advice. He was clearly incredibly knowledgeable, and I was grateful for his expertise. I felt great about the decisions I'd made. JRA finished the work sooner than planned, and the cost was lower than estimated. I picked it up today, and the bike is riding great. I couldn't be happier. Perfect service, in really difficult and challenging times. On top of all that - their process for handling Covid is excellent. It's more work for them, but I really appreciate them finding a way to provide top-notch service while keeping us and the staff safe. read more

I can't believe I didn't come here sooner. This is a great shop. No question they are dirt-oriented, but they know bikes and can take care of roadies and commuters just fine. What prompted the review was that after I had some parts changed and work done on my bike, I ended up getting charged an extra $20 for a bit of extra labor that hadn't been quoted or agreed upon. I didn't put up too much of a fight, but didn't leave happy either. As I was outside getting ready to leave, I looked up and there was the owner, who had somehow figured out that I was displeased and wanted to know if I'd had a positive experience. I told him the truth...I was very happy with the staff and the service, but not pleased about getting charged for something I hadn't agreed to up front. Without hesitation, he offered to refund the $20 on the spot. I told him to just give me a store credit, because thanks to that very classy move, I will definitely be back. read more

I know very little about bikes, and my wife and I went in with a used bike that was given to us. The staff was friendly enough, but didn't seem overly eager to explain things better to a couple of noobs. We were told the bike could use a tune-up, which sounded good given the bike had just been sitting for a while. The service took a bit over a week to get done, as promised (which seemed a bit long, but good thing they're busy, I guess) and it cost $120 ( which we found a bit steep, given our little knowledge of bike repair/maintenance). My first complaint is that the front brakes were not adjusted properly and were barely working. Second one is that the quick-release they installed on the seat looked used, which would be OK if it meant it cost us less, but the thing doesn't work very well. The seat still moves from side to side, even after tightening the quick-release very hard. We went back a week later with a semi-new bike bought off from Craiglist, and we were told it also needed a $120 tune-up! The bike is perfectly fine, maybe needs a brake cable replaced, but otherwise is great. My reason for giving it 2 stars is that the second time I went the mechanic took about 5 minutes to look it over and deem it needed a tune-up, without as much explaining why and what needed to be repaired or replaced. I read a review here saying that "That typical elitist bike mentality... does not exist here." Maybe it's less so than other places, I wouldn't know. However, I will say that a young couple with little bike knowledge, just looking to get their rec bikes in shape for the summer were not as well received as I had hoped for a local business. My hope is that they read this and take what I've said in consideration. read more

I have been into JRA cycles twice. Both times for simple service. The first time I went I had broken my pedal and wanted to get new pedals. They talked me into getting a whole new crank, chain, and front gear in addition to the pedals. It was expensive but I hadn't put much money into my bike in years. It is an old Bianchi that was converted to a fixed gear. It is really a simple bike but has quality parts. So I said go ahead. A week goes by and I get my bike back and everything looks good. I start riding it and 10 miles in one of the pedals they replaced just fell off. It was like the crank was all drilled out and there was no way to reattach it. I have a long walk home. So I take it in and they apologize and say they will fix it up. They are as good as their word and I get my bike back in a few days and the pedals now stay on and everything else is fine. So although I was pissed that I paid a ton of money for shoddy service, they did make it right. So about a month later I get a little piece of metal in my rear tire and it won't hold air. I take my bike back to get a new tube. They say it is 7.44, but for 10 dollars more they will replace it right there. So I say sure why not. 15 minutes later I get my bike and try to ride it home. Halfway home the rear wheel locks up. I look down and see it is wedged into the side of the frame below the seat. They hadn't tightened the rear wheel correctly after changing the tube. By that time, I couldn't get back before they closed. So I had to go home and tighten it myself. They seem like a good shop, but for what things cost there I would expect them to be able to properly service a bicycle. They are 0/2 and I doubt if I will ever go back to get service done there in the future. read more

This store has a great inventory of mtb related things. However there service is sub par. I dropped my downhill bike to have the front boxxer fork serviced awhile back. I paid a couple hundred dollars for the fork service. However, the forks compression knobs seized up only a few weeks later! Also on this same work order they forgot to order a crucial part for my rear axle I had asked them to order. I had to call them after the due date only to find out the part had still not been ordered. This caused me to miss a race. Great shop for buying things. Never get work done here. read more

Bought a bike with no chain at a yard sale thinking that I wanted to try and get in better shape. At least in theory that's why I bought it. Brought it over to JRA because it's down the street and Yelp gave me a 20% discount for a needed tuneup. I was told a new chain was $10 and installation was around another $10. Tune up priced down to $52. Picked up bike and my bill was $85. Huh? Told the nice gentleman behind the counter and he added a little more to my discount to appease me but still not totally give in. I like that. He talked about how much time and work he put into my crappy bike. I thanked him for it. Still need to adjust my back brake. It's a little too far out of reach for my liking. Now if I could only find that allen wrench to fix it. Hmmm? Good selection of bikes for sale but not enough hybrids that won't make my back hurt. After the yard sale and the tuneup I probably could of bought a new bike for around the same money. Lesson learned. read more

What? 5 Stars? But I never give a 5-Star rating. I commute daily on my mountain bike to and from work (even in the cold snowy winters). So when something goes wrong with my bike, I need it fixed and I need it fixed fast. They're fast and yet the quality of work is superb! They have a very large selection of bikes for me to "look at". I say that because the wife only allows me to look at them. Eye candy for the whipped. Although, I've never bought a complete bike from them, I've pretty much bought all of the parts to a complete bike. If that even makes any sense. You'd understand if you had to validate every purchase to the wife. "Hunny, I need new wheels. My old ones are kinda wobbly." or "Hunny, I need a new fork. The old forks don't fit my new frame very well." Get it? The guys at JRA have been very helpful with every purchase I've made. They know the products they sell and won't pressure you into buying a product you don't need. For instance, I really like them super light super flashy Crank Bros wheelset (had the money for them) but he suggested the less expensive Mavics (still good lookin). Anyways, if you're driving along and see a guy riding a white mountain bike and you have insurance, hit me! I'd love to go to JRA to buy a new bike! read more

Located my dream mountain bike in about ten minutes, took it for a quick spin and got everything I needed in no time with great advice and patience from the staff. I left my ID by mistake and they called me immediately and mailed it back within 2 days. Tried a few other places first that just weren't right. Highly recommend JRA. read more

I used their repair service on my son's bicycle. I had a badly bend rear rim that needed straightening. I would normally do it myself, but this was bent enough that I needed to call in professionals. They recommended that I replace instead of repair because the wheel was compromised. Since the price difference between repair and replace was minimal, I agreed. They didn't have a low end replacement in stock (they are a higher end shop), so they had to order it. Service was friendly and reasonably timely. They were not inexpensive, but honestly I am not sure any bike service place is. read more

I can't say enough good things about this shop. I've been riding mountain bikes since the 90's in the New Jersey area, never found a shop I really like there. I moved to the Boston metro area a little over a year ago and went from shop to shop until I luckily found myself inside JRA on one day when it was pouring rain on my way to the Fells. I didn't purchase anything that day, just browsed and saw these beautiful Pivot's, Ibis's, Yeti's, Cannondales, Surly's, Felts, Rocky Mountains, Niners and others I'm forgetting to list. Throw all the amazing bikes out of the window, and you're left with a great service team that has done some perfect work on my bikes. They are awesome, they are knowledgeable and you'll never fee like a nuisance to them no matter how small or trivial your request is. Just down to earth staff that can help you with commuters, bmx, road, mountain, hybrid bikes and more. Tons of selections of brands. The service is also quick and they are incredibly helpful on letting you know what they can do for what you are looking to spend (if you don't want to fix everything). I like this place and here are the reasons why: -local SMALL business -down to earth, gracious, non gear head staff -totally reasonably priced (in comparison to larger Cambridge based locales with higher rent to cover) ...but back to the staff...they did not laugh at my bike when I brought it in. A 1970's era 3 speed with dangerously bad brakes, near bald tires and the ugliest basket harness known to mankind. I wanted only to make the bike safe enough for me to zip down the street to run a quick errand. The likelihood of riding it more than a couple of city street miles at a stretch is slim to nil. The staff did not try to get me to do more than what would accomplish this. *LOVE* A few years back at a flashy Cambridge based gear shoppe I spent an insane amount of money to fix up and trick out an elderly Mongoose Mountain bike that I *may* use once a season. Surrounded by gear heads and too much titanium I folded to replacing unnecessary bits of the bike (handle bars for example) in order to make it 'look good.' *DO NOT LOVE* I'll be back over at JRA when I'm ready to invest more in my vintage relic...or when I cho0se to replace it. read more

I have a Electra Townie Cruiser that I love. I hadn't been able to ride for a few years due to personal issues, but am looking to get back in the seat. For the life of me I couldn't figure out what was wrong with my breaks. I called down to JRA (which stands for Just Riding Along) to find out the procedure of getting my bike looked over. Ben answered, and even tried to walk me through the issue so maybe I wouldn't have to come down. I did need to come down, and for only $15 Ben fixed my problem, did a quick check in of my tires and sent me on my way. I will definitely come back for any further bike needs. (Four stars only due to the short nature of our relationship. With extended experience, could easily be five.) read more
