My boyfriend and I stopped in here on a whim to look at bike seats. My rear was very much in need of an upgraded seat, and after trying a couple places we landed here. This store is small, but has all the essentials a biker would be looking for. They had several different bike seat options for me to choose from. We also looked at bike racks, and the gentleman helping me was very patient and helpful, showing me all the differences in sizes and features. When I finally made up my mind on which seat to get, he quickly installed it for me and I was able to write off on my new cushiony seat! We also purchased a patch repair kit to keep with my bike. As we were leaving, someone else came in the store that was a regular and commented on how great the service was. This might become my new go to bike shop! read more

I was riding my bike near the Middlesex Fells yesterday and got a flat. Luckily, AAA was able to pick up me and my bike. I initially called Wheel Works in Somerville to ask if I could drop off the bike so they could fix the flat either Saturday or Monday. I didn't expect them to fix it right away. But, without giving a reason, they said I couldn't drop it off. Even though I bought my bike there and had just had it in for a tune-up a month earlier. So, I called Bike Boom. Not only did he say yes right away, but when I arrived he offered to fix the tire even though they were closing in half an hour, which I didn't expect. I was so grateful that I didn't have to be without my bike for the weekend and return to pick it up another day. I so appreciate how kind they were! YELP ELITE HOT TAKE With a variety of bike shops to choose from in the area, we're always looking for the cheapest deal - this is especially true for service providers. However, what we fail to realize (and hard to accept) is that cheap does NOT equal quality/value. I haven't done a comparison analysis between shops BUT I know without a doubt that Roy and his team at Bike Boom are: 1) Skilled 2) Expeditious 3) Cordial On a busy Thursday afternoon I dropped off my bike to repair a flat and was supposed to get it next week because of how busy they were. I received a personal call from Roy the next day to let me know it was ready and what other issues he identified and fixed! Issues that another Cambridge shop oversaw the last 2 or 3 times I've brought my bike in for a tune up. Roy broke it down into layman terms so I would understand what was wrong, what he can do, and gave me his honest opinion on what needed to be fixed immediately versus what can be delayed. He also gave me a rundown of the components on my bike and some history! There's something to be said about a shop that will call you in the middle of the pandemic when they're getting flooded with other customers and bikes to get to - THEY CARE about every single customer that comes through their shop. Other than friendly interactions with the mechanics, i didn't have a great experience with bike boom. I went to them with squealing disc brakes. The sales person wasn't the person working on the bike. They initially said it would be a day to repair, it took almost a week and several phone calls. They kept changing what they recommended and what they recommended ended up being out of stock. (They also kept saying it probably needed a full replacement, that the callipers were probably broken) They pressured me into replacing the disc and pads saying they couldn't return the bike in the condition it was in, saying it was unsafe (they had done no work at that point). They also insisted that the disc couldn't be saved. I finally agreed to their suggestions and the replacement disc was not good. And within days it was squealing again. I called within days of getting the bike back, the disc performance was bad and it was squealing. They said they would get back to me after checking for parts. They called over a month later saying "oops i forgot you, do you still want us to look at it?" No. I do not. 6 months later i had another shop look at it. The problem was a simple screw replacement in the brake line. Fluid from the stripped screw contaminated the pads. I got my old high-quality disc remounted. Paid for new pads and screw. Problem solved. The work BB did was a complete waste of money. My gut said to just pull my bike and go to a different shop. I should have listened. I wouldn't have wasted almost 200 bucks. read more

Service was a good price and done well, and the hours are the best in the area. But for some reason my flat tire repair was taking a little longer than usual. I show up, and my bill is higher than expected...because one of my spokes was broken. To sum up, they ended up doing repair on it before chatting with me, which took me aback at first, but felt fine with in the end. The very next day I got a lovely email from the owner. turns out they talk about customer experience, and he wanted to apologize for the confusion, and gave me a discount on my next service. I was there yesterday for something I know a be a very minor fix but was looking for some expert guidance as my attempt to fix it didn't work I waited patiently in line, when it was my turn I was met with with swears and statements like "Do you think this makes sense?" and " it's f@#ked " referring to a part I installed but didn't install it correctly basically told me to go f#ck myself and to " just buy a cheap part on eBay" he seemed flustered and bothered to even be talking to me and dealing with my e-bike Don't bother bringing e-bikes they get so flustered at even the sight of them I watched him tell a customer to " return his bike because it's shit" referring to a very nice electric Aventon brand e-bike. Hell, they've also told me " to be honest I'd get rid of it " once In the past about my electric motor bike. and to think I've given them so much business in the past and put up with similar treatment but this time I've had it I don't know what the owners problem is but he needs to tighten up I'm to nice to them smiling and nodding after being made to feel like an idiot and given no new useful information. he trattled a couple measurements at me and sent me on my way. read more

Called in about having my daughters Schwinn fixed up last week. The person who answered the phone was very courteous. I dropped the bike off the following morning. They sent me an email giving me an estimate of what it would cost and if I agreed with it to respond. Within two days it was all cleaned up, tuned up and rear cable replaced. The bike is 22 years old and has been sitting in the basement for a few years. Now my 10 year old granddaughter can ride her moms bike when she visits us! I'm very happy with the service here and have a couple more bikes I'm going to bring in. Best to call ahead as they are busy but they seem very organized. I highly recommend them. read more

He helped change my tires, tubes, and greased everything. then when I said I'd come back in ten minutes he did some repairs to my derailer which I hadn't even asked about and he helped me make sure my bike was snug on my car bike rack. 10/10 would come again! Bike boom recently saved the day for my partner and I on a weekend bike ride. We left Union Square towards Capitol Theatre in Arlington, and got to Elm and Somerville Ave when I heard a loud pop. It was a hot day and my girlfriend's front tire blew out. Ace Wheelworks was nearby, but not closest to make it before they closed up shop (as it was a Sunday). I had recently heard good things from a co-worker about Bike Boom and saw that they were just a little further over on Highland. So we walked her bike over to see if they could help us out. When we got there, I was surprised at how incredibly busy they were! Person after person was coming by with their bike, looking to have something or other done. I was worried this might mean they wouldn't have time to help us out, but told us to drop it off and come back in 20-30 min. After a quick pint at Five Horses, we circled back and her bike was all ready to go. While we didn't get to make the earlier showing of the movie, we still had enough time to catch the last showing of the night, thanks to Bike Boom. And yes, I know replacing a tube is not really anything prolific on the scale of bike repairs, but it was really the way they handled their customer flow and provided easy, quality service that was most impressive. Also as a side note for those in need: they advertise $50 tune-ups on the front of their shop. From what I've seen, that's a good deal in the Boston area, so take advantage! read more

Best bike shop around, 100%!!!! So many bike shops (Ace Wheelworks, cough cough) have employees that are very rude and condescending to me. These guys know their stuff, are super honest, and offer fantastic service. My new-to-me bike randomly popped a front tire and so I set and appointment for a tune up here, luckily for same day drop off! Omar took in my bike and 48 hours later I was sent an email with my quote. Upon calling we discussed all the things that were actually needed *right now* and I can't appreciate their honesty enough--especially since I'm currently unemployed due to COVID. They estimated 7 days but my bike was ready in 5 days! When I came back to pick up the bike, Omar was super informative about the new tires he put on as well as showing me all the work he did with my tune up and gave me tips for having full fenders. Unfortunately my tire popped again 2 rides later, so I called up the shop again and they let me walk in my bike the same day! They have a 30 day warranty on all service which is why I felt comfortable bringing it back right away. This time Clint was the one servicing my bike, and he thoroughly explained the possible reasons for this happening again with a brand new tube/tire. He discovered that a small strip on my tire rim hadn't been installed properly and he apologized for it not being right the first time, so he kept my bike for about an hour to replace it. He was so attentive that he even noticed my tire was rubbing against my fender, so he offered to keep it overnight to file it down. The next day, I came to pick it up and she rides like a dream now!!! Again, this was the best service I've ever had from either a bike shop or a mechanic. Thank you for teaching me about my bike and being so attentive and kind to me! Other shops need to take a lesson in customer service from Bike Boom :) read more

Easily my favorite bike shop in Somerville/Cambridge! Always willing to lend a hand for something small like a stuck bike lock or low tires on a kids bike, giving advice freely and practically. I go there all the time. Always feel welcome, problem gets fixed, and prices are perfectly reasonable. They are upfront about issues and then get creative with solutions. This is my go-to bike repair place. I had my brakes, derailleur, plus a few other things done in a major maintenance. They did a great job and quickly make some following adjustments. I had my bike fixed up here. It cost more than $450 and I paid for it. I am not an expert when it comes to fixing a bike so I thought I will give it a shot. When they gave me a quote, I went down and had to beg for explanation why it costs so much. Their attitude was as if everyone should know why it costs so much and I'm a dumb girl asking for such simple questions. When they called me to say it is ready, they added 'by the way you should change your brakes soon'. I thought that was ridiculous. After spending as much as I paid to buy this bike, I still need to fix it? It's not like I didn't have this bike tuned up for decades. It was tuned up a year before that time. I won't go to this place ever again. I trusted this place because I wanted to support a local business but not all local business can provide high quality service I guess. Funny story is that my neighbor asked us for a good bike shop one day. He went to a shop to fix his wife's bike and later found out the shop put the brake or tire in a wrong way. He tried to fix it by himself but was frustrated. I went on saying I don't have a particular one to recommend but told him not to go to Bike Boom. Guess what? These guys are awesome, honest and really know their stuff. I came by today to try and drop of my bike to get a tune up. I hadn't ridden it since October and like to be sure I'm safe- though the bike isn't old and probably needs little work. They told me they weren't taking bikes till Saturday (nearly a week away) but they would look at it before I left the shop. They offered to pump my tires and grease my chain and take a quick look for free, since in reality, it probably didn't need to come in for a full inspection. Nathan was incredibly thorough and found a funny issue with my gears switching. I didn't think much of it since the bike still functioned, but he spent a good 10 minutes greasing and fine tuning my bike to get it to work. Eventually he had to cut a piece of plastic from a gauge box to get my bike to switch gears properly. I couldn't believe the efforts he went to to make sure I was happy and my bike left even better than it came in. I didn't get to give them a penny for their kindness, care and diligence.. so I hope if you need a repair, a new bike or a tune up, you'll take your business to bike boom! It's a small shop, but everyone is knowledgeable and super willing to help. I knew absolutely nothing about bikes and no one judged me or was patronizing -- even when they had to teach me to shift gears! Easy to come in and just pump your tires for free too. My bike was squeaking a lot and they diagnosed it (and oiled it) all for free. You don't feel like they're trying to push sales on you here for commission. Busted out my old bianchi bike after a short winter hiatus. I had several issues that needed to be taken care of, and requested the pick up service. Super easy. Aside from winter time, I use my bike daily and to commute to work so I needed quite a lot done. Before I stored it, I had issues with my chain, a tire, resistance, and needed a tuneup. The staff was very friendly, helpful, knew their stuff and were communicative and detailed throughout. They answered all my complicated questions and I felt very respected throughout! I LOVE BIKE BOOM. I've been going here for years--since they opened. I used to live in Somerville, and they were my neighborhood bike shop. Even though I've moved to Roxbury, I still bring my bikes to them because they listen to what I need, do what needs to be done, and make helpful suggestions for next steps. Roy and his crew are reliable and honest, and I know they're getting me a good deal. They're solid bike guys! I've had them work on the Terry road bike I use every day (several times at this point), an old school 3-speed I acquired off of Craigslist, and they've built me two custom bikes (a Terry fixie and a Terry 3-speed). Bike Boom is amazing! Customer services simply does not get any better. The owner was so patient and helpful. He did a great job of examining my bike and explaining to me the repairs. When I ultimately decided to get a new bike (as the other one was a really really old piece of junk that I had left outside in the snow for two months), he laid out all the different options and helped me understand the differences between his bike and a similar one at another store. He did not tilt the playing field or sow doubts so I would purchase one at his store. And he was supportive when I chose to purchase at another store because I preferred the other bike's style. I've also come in for adjustments, buying small parts and repairs. Always a great experience. This is just what a great bike shop be: honest, fair, patient, and helpful. The staff is very helpful and clearly cares about what they do. I bought a used bike a bike boom several years ago for a good price. It has held up very well. I really appreciated how they let me try the bike out on the nearby bike path before purchasing it. I also purchased some smaller parts such as a cup holder. It didn't come with the screws that I needed to attach it to my bike so they found some lying around and gave them to me. Highly recommend! read more

Great staff. Very reasonably priced. Brought my bike there for a stuck cog and they had me out of there in two minutes. If I had gone here to begin with rather than try to fix it myself I would have not broken my chain whip and spent a lot of time spraying the threads with penetrating oil, I would have been able to bike all day. This is a small bike shop with uncommonly friendly, generous bike mechanics happy to help in any way they can, looking to save their customers money (unlike a lot of places), and who won't treat you like an idiot because they know more about the issue you're having with your bike than you do (which is, of course, why you're there). It's a small operation and all of the employees seem to be seasoned mechanics, which means that anyone who works there can help you out -- a huge asset (in comparison with at least one bigger bike store nearby, which is extremely hit-and-miss). Granted, they don't carry a lot of product, evidently being more oriented toward service and repair, but they're very willing to work with you and find solutions. They're also extremely friendly people -- a notorious rarity in the bike shop world -- and they're generous with their time and services (in comparison with at least one other small bike shop just south of Porter Square closer to my house). As a personal story from yesterday, I had bought a new handlebar stem elsewhere that turned out to be missing a shim keeping it tight, meaning an unfortunate and dangerous situation. After earnestly trying but being unable to find a shim that would work, Clint at Bike Boom literally took the stem off one of his own personal bikes he keeps at the shop and Chris put it on my bike as a loaner until I could get mine worked out with the other shop -- and they wouldn't charge me for any of this, just asked that I get the (equal quality to my own) stem back to them whenever I could. I was amazed by their generosity and friendliness, tipped them all the cash I had on hand (unfortunately not as much as I would have liked), and most of all will bring my business (and Clint's stem!) back to them. I highly recommend trying Bike Boom first when you need a part or especially service, as I find them to be the best in the area (though I'll add, as it comes to mind, that Somervelo is also outstanding, if a bit farther away and a bit pricier).
