While I was there people stopped by with their bikes for repairs from fixing flats to tuneups. Please note that with the resurgence of interest in biking during the pandemic plus the wave of e-bike popularity, you must book a maintenance appointment online ahead of time. They are currently booked for 3 weeks! Clearly Marblehead/Salem Cycle are experts and well-loved by their clientele. They put me on a great new e-bike with little fuss and very reasonable timeframe. I brought my bike to the shop for a long overdue tune-up. I asked for the FULL service and they quickly told me that my bike didn't need it (already a feather in their cap). I booked the lower level package and suggested I probably needed a new power-train. I got called a few days later and my bike was ready. No up-charging or extra costs. It was exactly what I had expected (along with a new gear cable), including a special discount they were currently offering on service packages. I love this bike store. They are not local to me but I go there whenever I am in the area. They are extremely knowledgeable and they have "fun things" in the store that I usually do not see in my local bike store (e.g. an air horn for my bike or a crash kit in case of an accident this will automatically call for assistance). I really like going in there an just chatting with them and other customers. Several months ago I was speaking with a gentleman that builds those "frankenbikes" (as I like to call them) that had to be over 10 feet high. He even asked me if I wanted to try it. That would have been fun but explaining to the emergency room doctor what happened would have been a story in and of itself. Whenever I am in Salem (a few times a year) I make sure to visit them. If you are into cycling Jerseys you have to get one from them. I have a few different ones from them and whenever I ride wearing one people are always asking me about the Witch on a Bicycle on the back of my Salem Cycle Jersey. During our trip to New England last fall we stopped in lots of bike shops. B is a mountain biker, so he likes to check out the shops and see if there's anything interesting. Salem Cycle was a nice little shop. It's small, but has all of the basics you would need for biking. The staff was friendly and attentive. We picked up a water bottle as a keepsake, and now that the weather is warming up at home it's starting to get a lot of use. I really like their logo, which is a witch on a broom bike riding in front of a full moon. It's kind of cheesy, but I loved Salem and I loved that the town embraces the witch theme there. If you're in Salem and need something for your bike, you can likely find it at Salem Cycle. If not, I'm sure the staff could point you in the right direction. read more

I was a walk-in last Saturday morning and was greeted by one of the gentleman that work at this business with a wide grin and a warm, "How may I help you?" My initial intention was to buy a water bracket for my 21 speed and an insulated water bottle. The same fellow wheeled my bike to the back room to put the bracket on, and I continued to look around the store. I noticed how much it had changed since I had bought my bike some years before. There were so many new cool gadgets to examine. I ended up buying a handlebar bell, a new seat, new pedals and a rearview mirror, as well as a phone holder. I couldn't be more pleased with everything! The same fellow kept wheeling the bike back to add all my extra bits and pieces. It was a great start to my weekend. My wife took my 7 year old son's Trek mountain bike for a tune up. The mechanic put the bike on a lift and started looking at it. During the inspection he dismantled the front brake and front brake lines. He then told my wife that the front brakes needed to be replaced. He quoted her $120.00 dollars for new brakes and a "tune up". I felt like this was a bit much for brakes and a tune up. We decided to cancel the service. When my wife went into the store to pick up the bike she discovered that the brake line and front brake were dismantled. My wife asked the mechanic why the brakes were dismantled. He told her that the only way that he could re-assemble the brake and line is if he replaced it with new parts. Wow! Really? I just spent all of about 10 minutes putting the brake line and brake casing back together on the bike. Most of this time was spent looking for the Torx key under my work bench. Was this a sad attempt to manipulate my wife to agree to a repair she didn't want? Or, was this just laziness? We will never know because we won't be returning. read more

Last summer, I rode my bike to work. When I finished work, I noticed I had a flat tire. Luckily Salem Cycle was close by and still open for the day. I was expecting to leave my bike there to get the tire repaired and come back for it the next day. But to my surprise the bike tech (I can't recall his name) said he could repair it while I waited. While he worked on the tire, I browsed around the store. One of my hand grips needed replaced. I found two different grips I liked and asked for advice as to which set of grips would be better. Rather than make a quick recommendation and suggest the more expensive of the two. The bike tech took the time to ask about my riding habits and also asked what I was looking for in grips. Then he made a recommendation. The grips are comfortable, durable and still in good shape. They also carry Timbuk2 bags at a reasonable price. And I ended up getting one that visit. In addition to selling and repairing bikes. Salem Cycle offers a well rounded selection of inventory and offers bike rental as well. The bike tech I worked with was pleasant and informative. Next time my bike needs some TLC, Salem Cycle will be my destination. read more

I took my 3 year old's bike in for a flat repair. They charged me $16 for the repair then the tire was flat 2 days later and he never even rode the bike. I took it back, they looked at it and changed the tire again then told me that they HAD to charge me $10 for labor to repair the tire that I had just paid to repair that they didn't actually fix. What a brilliant business model! Local bike shop, incredibly friendly and knowledgeable staff, lots of options - and the most wonderful 50% off sale imaginable. A yellow "50% off Sale Extended" sign taped to the door drew us in to this unassuming store front, and the rest was history. A newbie to the biking world, my selections of gear depend much more on whether or not they match. The patience of the owner in finding me an entire black and hot pink get-up that was not only stylish but intelligently functional was amazing. His humor along the way was fantastic. He even took time to show me a selection of bikes that are now on my upcoming birthday wishlist, knowing full well we were not in the market at the moment. For my more cycle-savvy boyfriend, the owner and his partner managed to secure a collection of cycling attire, handlebars, water bottles, and other assorted sundries, crossing off the entire 2011 cycle checklist at 50% off. I went there and got one of my old bikes fixed up. It was more expensive then buying a cheap bike at target. But in the end was worth it, I feel like I have a really nice bike now, just like when I purchased it a hundred and fifty years ago for several hundred dollars. I love going into Salem Cycle. The staff have always been wicked helpful. Last year I decided to treat myself to a new bike, so i did some research online and asked about a couple of bikes I was interested in. They let me try them out and when I came back saying, "this isn't my bike." they totally understood and we talked more about what I was looking for, what my needs were, what was right/ wrong about what I tried. And oh. my. god. were the trips down there, the research, and the trials worth it! I ended up w/the best bike for me EVER. I *loves* my bike and I especially love taking it on the bike rides that Salem Cycle runs. For the past few years, while on the group bike rides, I would be in the back w/this beat-to-hell mountain bike that couldn't keep up w/the street bikes (heck, one time a couple riding those collapsible commuter Dahons were flying past me). I bought my first road bike here about 12 years and have had reason to go in and get things I needed over the years but have usually maintained the bike myself. This year I was having some problems with the shifters and knowing it had never been professionally gone over, I brought it in. The staff there are pretty inattentive at times especially if there are several working (strange), but generally it is OK. When I brought my bike in, one of the staff had a quick look and said the chain was problem and it had to be replaced and because the chain needed replacing I needed a new cassette. This is after he initially told me that I needed a whole new set of shifters! The bike did not need any shifters. Money is not really a big issue, so although I felt I was being bamboozled, I agreed. I was told it would take about 7-10 days. I left the bike there. I was phoned the day before the bike was due to be picked up and told that they did not have the correct cassette and had to order this ( I wish they had done this day 1, the the staff member had taken a cassette off the wall and said it was correct on day 1) A week later I went in to check where my bike was, another more staff member told me that the part had still not come, when I asked when this might happen I was very rudely told that it would come when it came. He then turned around and starting to chat to one of the other staff. Today I went in 4 weeks after I initially had brought the bike in (after missing a month of cycling) and said I just wanted the bike. The same staff member looked it up and said it was done, when I asked why I had not been phoned he told me my number did not work (although they had phoned me on the same number 3 weeks before). I climb on the bike when I get out of the store and try to ride it, but whoever test rode it had not adjusted the seat back to where I had it. Unbelievable! I am a big supporter of local and I live in downtown Salem, I do not mind paying extra to support local business but I doubt if I will go to Salem Cycle again. read more
