The worst experience I have ever had in a cycle shop. I went in there looking to purchase a road bike and check out some beach cruisers. We were completely ignored by the two staff members that were working at the time. Even if they had been busy, which they weren't, I would've expected them to have at least said "Sorry about the wait, I'll be with you as soon as I can," but this never happened. We ended up leaving and purchasing two Specialized bikes from the Cycle Loft in Burlington where they were definitely busy, but helped us out and fitted us for bikes for almost 2 hours. read more

I brought my used folding bike to Marblehead Cycle. It needed some TLC. I needed it done quickly as I wanted it for a trip. They completed a tune up and repair. Was promised a price match over the phone (just wanted to deal with a store closer to my house), after getting a quote from shop in Danvers, but when I got there, the guy named John, who I spoke on the phone with, told me the price he gave me earlier that day is impossible to match. I give Salem Cycles credit for being one of the only bike stores around that's open on Sundays. However, I haven't been wowed by anything in the store...prices, bikes, service, etc. It's a very middle-of-the-road shop with what seems to be a higher markup on the same products than at other stores around here. The few times I've gone in looking for advice, they haven't gone out of their way to impart their wisdom. They also didn't outright ignore me either. Overall, I've had a lot better and I've had a lot worse from bike stores on the North Shore. read more

Don't waste your money. The guys working in the shop were quick to hustle me through an inexpensive purchase. I asked for two presta bike tubes. The guy working the shop barely gave me time to get the words out of my mouth and he sent me out with two Schrader valve tubes. Cost me 25 bucks that I won't recover and worse have to make another trip to a different store so I can repair my bike tire. read more

Had an expensive bike packed for shipment a few months ago. It turns out that they didn't put any cushion or bubble wrap on the frame and it was badly damaged during shipment. I understand part of the blame falls on UPS for rough-handling but the damage would not have happened if they took more care and effort in packing it. We rented 2 road bikes for a day on a recent trip to the northeast. The experience at Salem Cycle was simply awesome. The team went above and beyond to help us, fit the bikes, fit the pedals to our shoes, awesome directions for where to ride, gave us multi-tools just in case - and the best part - we received 2 brand new bikes for our rentals. Highly recommend this shop for rentals (and would imagine their sales and service are just as good). It was clear that their team cared about the people that walk in the door. read more

I am not a biker. But I had this fantasy about riding my bike to the farmer's market in Marblehead on Saturday mornings (a fantasy not yet fulfilled because I'm still a wimp about riding with scary cars) and so I went to Salem Cycle to get a cushy, cutie beach cruiser. Now this is a pretty focused bike shop with all kinds of doo-das and special things for hardcore bike people, but the super friendly and informed staff made me comfortable, and--most importantly-never treated me like an idiot. It was great to be in a specialized store where they understood that not everyone is a triathlete or mountain biker. Even when I went back to the shop a few hours after picking up my purple (!!) bike, the guys there took time to explain basic riding etiquette so I could at least safely steer myself home. When a friend recently came for a visit, we rented her a bike for the day and again everyone was nice and I couldn't be happier with my experience. I know that if anything happened to my bike, I could bring it back in and they would help fix it--the same can't be said about big box stores. In regards to comments about poor service: The store isn't huge and the staff seems to take time with each customer. When the store is packed with people, there is definitely a wait. But I think it was worth it. read more

My bike had limited use, but has been stored in my basement for the last 21 years. I took it to Salem Cycle for a tune-up and I was quite certain that the labor would cost $125. They were very honest and informed me that this tune-up would only cost $25. I appreciated their honesty and rates. read more

While I've had good experiences in the past, I was very dissatisfied with Marblehead Cycle today. I took my bike in to have a flat repaired yesterday and paid $40 including a $15 Covid cleaning fee to have it repaired. My husband picked it up and hung it on the wall. First Issue was it was flat again this morning, so we brought it back. They replaced the tube again and told me that sometimes the tubes are defective...inconvenient, but no big deal. The big deal is they wanted to charge me again!?!?! I was able to get them to waive the repair fee, but they insisted I pay the Covid disinfecting fee again. I understand Covid has hit us all hard, but why I should have to pay $15 more when they didn't fix the problem the first time is beyond me. Honestly $15 seemed too high to begin with, so $30 later I'm less than happy. I'll use them in a pinch for parts, but will no longer be making big purchases there and will take my servicing out of town going forward. read more

There are times when the word "UNF****NGBELIEVABLE" is best used to describe an experience. Today I put my bike (flat tire) in my trunk at 9:45.Having to meet a friend at 10:00 at the Hawthorne Hotel I swung by this bike place at about 9;55 with the intent of locking it up in front.since they open at 10:00. As i pulled in front of the place and started removing the bike from my trunk,to my pleasant surprise a man was unlocking the front door. As i was walking towards him I said "Perfect Timing!" ! Within 5 seconds I reached the door and the guy quickly "LOCKED" the door from the inside as i am literally 3ft. away from him ,holding my bike in front of me like a moron, I yelled "Are you serious?' and quickly threw my bike in the trunk and heard "Come back tomorrow!" I'd love to here the response as to why this a-hole couldn't have the courtesy of saying "ANYTHING" to me before locking me out! Update: Drove to Lynn to the North Shore Cycle shop at 451 Western Ave. As I was taking my bike out of my trunk a guy (owner) ,who happened to be in the parking lot took the bike out of my hands and wheeled it into the store. Reminded me of the good old days when your business was appreciated! read more

Really friendly and knowledgeable staff! I took my vintage bike that Laundry's cycles could not fix and the Salem cycle guys easily fixed it with no problem. Also was much cheaper than I expected. I definitely now have a new bike shop that I will be frequenting! read more

These guys are great! They took my 1979 Ross Super Grand Tour that had been sitting for a few years in my basement and turned it into a great daily rider. I gave them some creative flexibility and it paid-off nicely. read more

This place is great! The staff was very knowledgeable, nice, and attentive. I signed up for yelp just to give this store a review. This is one of the best bicycle shops in the North Shore. Their prices are a little higher then some but it's really a wash, and they have great sales. I was sold a $1200 bicycle for $700 simply because it was the last year's model and they were clearing out inventory...they will take care of you. They are also very professional, they'll work with you to make sure you have a positive experience and they actually trust their customers. Imagine that. They also treat you a lot better than Salem Cycle does. Salem Cycle does a good job, don't get me wrong, but in terms of their attitude, I much prefer Marblehead Cycle and I'll settle for the Urbane Cyclist if I can't get to MH Cycle. Overall, if you want a high quality bike, quick repairs, an overall positive experience without an elitist attitude, then go to Marblehead Cycle. read more

I brought training wheel for my little girl's bike $30 and I asked the guy if I can't put it in can I bring it here he said yes .. A day after I brought the bike in .. Sale guy not there but owner .. He said he will take are it for me will take about 15 mins. So we came back and wait for a few then he tell me that he can check me out now .. And yaaaaaa he charge me for install for another $20 so I end up pay $50 for training wheel for 16' bike .., Just because I am lazy to go get the tool .. I think this place became a blood sucker !! My chain broke while riding through Salem this morning, so I called Salem Cycle just as they opened. Their response: "Sure, bring it right over, we'll get a new one on in 5 minutes!" When I arrived, I was told the tech had one customer in front of me; "Go have a cup of coffee, we'll call you when it's done.". So after about 45 pleasant minutes at Gulu Gulu, I went back to be told, "We haven't gotten to it yet, but soon...". 15 minutes later it was clear no one was getting to anything, so I called Beverly Cycle: "Sure, would you like us to come pick you up? We'll have you in and out in 5 minutes! And guess what: they did! At least one bike shop knows how to do business. Bought a bike off Craigslist for cheap, and had the gears and brakes crap out on me within a week. I brought it down to Salem Cycle to see a tune-up would get me back on the road. The staff were upfront in telling me that I'd most likely need some new parts on top of the tune-up, and gave me a cost estimate. The bike was in pretty terrible shape. I decided to just admit defeat, cause at this point the repairs were more than what the bike cost me. The repair guy, without me even asking, did what he could to make it ride-able again, and didn't charge me anything. Five stars for upfront honesty about the price and for helping me walk out of there not completely defeated. read more

Bike shop is very professional , They sold my son a mountain bike in feb.2010 that was much to small for him just to make a sale. It was something that he saved his own money for over a year. Unable to ride in Feb. it had been unnoticed how small this bike was until about mid-April, After the first ride almost all the spokes had become loose and warped the rim, when I called them the said we should have check this before buying. If you spend $1300 on a bike it should atleast be put together correctly! We ended up spending another $160 on a new rim and sold this bike on craigslist and bought a bike that was the right fit elsewhere. Total lose of about $600...... Thanks read more

I went to this shop new to biking and interested in purchasing a new mountain bike. The two people who "helped" me out we're anything but helpful. They were not very knowlegable at all. I think i learned more about the bikes online in 30 min than 2 trips to this shop. They didn't have the bike in the size I wanted and took down my info and were supposed to call me to let me know if they could get one or let me know when the 2013s were coming out. After a full week with no reply I went to wheelworks in Somerville, they were awesome and the bike ended up being cheaper. I live one town away and would've rather bought the bike in Salem but the service I received was terrible. I do not recommend this shop if you are new to biking or want helpful info. read more

what a great bike shop. ever walk into a bike shop or a sports specialty shop and feel not only intimidated by the $$$ factor, but also feel very timid to talk to the staff and let them know that you are of the uninitiated "novice" crowd? no reason to feel like that here. yesterday i bought a very nice bike from this shop. partly because i live nearby, i would often stop and stare in the window of salem cycle, like a kid at christmas that has been saving up all year to buy his/her first bike to tool around the neighborhood with. and that's exactly how i felt. when i walked in yesterday, confident that i could buy a nice bike on a decent budget, i was welcomed by a wonderful staff. tim and dylan were incredibly knowledgeable, and asked questions that helped them select a bike for me that would fit my budget and what i would be using the bike for. they also took the time to explain different factors about the bike and why it was appropriate for someone my size. in the meantime, different regular customers came in and out of the shop, picking up bikes that had just been tuned up, or buying other little trinkets. everyone seemed to know each other by name. a very nice environment. before purchasing the bike, they asked that i take it for a spin, keeping my husband at the shop as collateral. nice to see people that really care about their product and customer satisfaction. i am extremely happy to have this local bike shop, and had a great experience there. read more

I went to this shop to see if they could actually fix my bike properly that had serviceable issues and this is what I found out. The bike was in useable shape with normal wear and tear parts that needed to be replaced and or existing parts be repositioned and adjusted. Their service is so so. The bike had issues after the repair when i brought it home. The worn parts was having the chain skip and fall off Some parts where not advised for replacement during the repair like a chain and freewheel that where worn and should have been suggested for purchase and installed for the repair. Existing parts like the derailleurs where not aligned properly and out of adjustment or not adjusted at all. They did not recommend additional service, parts, or advise to completely fix the problem, but the will try to recommend you to by a new bike from their store. The bikes did need some replacement parts and adjustments. These where later fixed at another shop. They did not even road test the equipment after servicing. I'm assuming that if it is something old, cheap, seems worn out, or beat up and they are able to (height + size). They will ask you to test it instead as if your the mechanic. What am I paying repair service for? The bike should be ready to go and no questions asked once fixed. They will try to sell you parts 2X more the amount of the original cost. Lets say a cheap made part is $15 elsewhere and they would sell it for $45. This was based on an actual part that was purchased and compared with the same exact manufactured model and name part from another store. What a rip off! I have had my bike fixed elsewhere with no issues and the parts where at a a reasonable cost. I would recommend trying elsewhere before making this your choice for repairs or parts. read more

I've always had good experiences here. The staff has been really helpful and not at all condescending since I am such a novice. I recently bought a new road bike there and had purchased a trainer online. I had trouble putting it together (meaning:some guy I conned to put it together), and I brought it to Salem Cycle. The owner was nice enough to try and assemble it, then helped me when I had to return it because it had a wrong part. Keep in mind I didn't even buy it from him. I brought a Bianchi mountain bike to Salem Cycles to have two tires put on and the bike checked over before a long-distance ride. I thought $20. each to change tires was a bit high. Other places it's $5-$8. Not only was it twenty bucks each they didn't bother to check the rim tape and replace it. I replaced it myself when I brought the bike to another shop two weeks later to have the bottom bracket and headset replaced. Both were worn out and apparently never checked for wear when the bike was at Salem Cycle. Careless. And expensive. If you care about the quality of work bring your bike somewhere else. read more
