Awesome, Dorchester-themed sweats, hoodies, t-shirts, and memorabilia. Cool stuff.

They do not do SINGLE item embroidery. Only jobs of 25 pieces or more. Some nice tshirts and Boston wear/gear.

But, I'm a guy and I'm supposed to be tough enough to wear concrete and broken glass slippers, no wait nowadays I am supposed to be emotionally intelligent enough to realize that my feet have feelings too and I am supposed to wear, what, Hush Puppies or Dr.Scholl's? I dunno, but shoe shopping sucks and I just don't like it. That's probably why much like a hobo in a dumpster I just can never make up my mind and always end up leaving a shoe store with more than one pair of kicks. This is where this gets useful for a moment, pay attention. Last weekend I picked up 3 pairs of sneakers, Reebok, New Balance and Adidas for just under $100 at Famous Footwear. Yes, it is a pretty unimpressive store, and the staff might as well not be there (actually the girl behind the counter said she liked the stuff I was buying, so I guess she can have my babies) and it is in the worst shopping plaza this side of Brockton - but - you can make out like a bandit here. Kudos Famous Footwear for being awesome at just sort of being there.

Since I don't have a car, I walk A LOT. I have bad knees, so I walk everywhere in sneakers. And I…read morehave wide feet, so finding said sneakers can be tough. I went into Champs out of convenience, since I go through DTX on my commute. A salesgirl asked me if I needed help, and I told her I was looking for wide sneakers. Of course, they didn't have any, but there were a couple styles that looked like they had a wide toebox, so I asked to try them on. The salesgirl brought out a pair and without asking, replaced the sockliner with a special insole. Had she asked, I would have told her that I have very high arches and can't use insoles in most shoes. But she didn't. And when I put the shoe on I was really confused until I figured out her switch. Since I didn't want the insoles, she started telling me about the most amazing socks in the world, that she loves (and wasn't wearing). Oh, and the shoe protector. You have to have the shoe protector to keep those sneakers clean. I decided to buy the sneakers and a couple pairs of socks, but the salesgirl looked horrified that I wasn't getting the protector. "You know, the netting will get all dirty and you can't get it clean, right?" she said. When I replied that they were for my commute and I didn't care her face was a mix of confused and grossed out. I had to return the shoes and was barely acknowledged. The music was WAY too loud and the store was really hot both times. Not to mention the overstocked salesfloor with no room to move around and the filthy floor itself. I really like the socks I got, but I'm not sure that I want to brave the store to get them again.

I love getting to explore the store and always find something new. Although it's on the smaller side for an REI, it is bigger than it seems. They have decent selection of gear and brands - definitely all the essentials. You can order online as well to pick up at or ship to the store if a specific item is not available. I tend to utilize this if there is something specific (brand/color, etc) that I know I want and then it's super efficient to pick up. The staff is super nice and always happy to guide to the section you are looking for. They are also helpful if you are returning an item or exchanging and I love their commitment to sustainability in the community as well. I always see people down in the bike/repair area so that seems to be a super convenient option to have for a the cyclists in Boston. If you have an active lifestyle, this is the place for you to come on this side of the Charles River.

They told me at checkout that I would save money on my current purchase if I signed up (I asked them to confirm this so it was crystal clear), so I signed up. They then tell me AFTER I've made an account that my discount will be applied to my NEXT purchase. It felt like they wouldn't let me buy anything. They also said my friend was "bumming off of his girlfriend" for checking if she had an account to try to get him to sign up. The products were good and the store was well equipped, but someone at REI corporate needs to change how their employees are trained. Being pushy is not a good look, and quite frankly left such a bad taste in my mouth. Would never go here again.
