I seldom write reviews but the service I received at Marathon Sports in Cambridge was so…read moreexceptional that I feel compelled to publicly applaud it. An avid runner until I was 50, two hip surgeries necessitated that I change my routine to walking and pool running. For close to 29 years, this worked for me. Approaching 80 has brought about new challenges. Recently I had to go to the foot doctor who took X-rays and told me that I have severe arthritis in my left foot. This explained much about some of the difficulties I have been having with my walking regimen. He explained that more than ever I need to be very careful with my walking shoes and explained the type of support my aging feet would need to get me another 10 years of walking the river. When I went into Marathon Sports, I felt truly welcomed and was lucky to have Nina as my sales person. She is just one of the kindest most patient sales people was ever my good fortune to meet. I was a difficult and demanding customer but my experience there leaves me grateful to her and the folks there at Marathon. James Spencer, Cambridge, MA

Yelp Review 2026 #209:…read more I waited at the very last minute to buy my team's jersey for the World Cup. I went to Nike in Las Vegas before coming to Boston and they didn't have any. This Nike store in Boston is along a shopping street. There are plenty of restaurants, bars and cafes along the way. I went in and combed the store for a jersey but the smallest size they had was XL which is basically a dress on me. But desperate times... The line to pay was super long and there was only one cashier! It wasn't until the line started to block a portion of the store did a second register opened up. If you know your city is hosting a major sporting event, you should be well-staffed! Which they were but some of them weren't really doing anything, not helping customers.

Popped in awaiting our dinner reservation,…read more Store was clean and staff greeted us as we entered. This isn't an outlet location so it's mostly full price items, they have a decent array of clothing, jackets starting to roll out, and a good spread of their sneaker models from dunks, Jordan's, runners and casual walking. Didn't stay here too long but i like the layout of the store and the openness of it to walk around.

I met Justin and also a new employee (sorry - I forgot his name! but he was great!) who analyzed my gait on a treadmill first, and then made recommendations based off of their observations. Then they chose 5 different pairs for me to try. I tested each by taking them for a run around the block til I chose the one I liked best. Overall great experience. I was nervous since I'm a new runner but felt welcomed here. Justin even mentioned a running group they have any let me know I could join if I want to run with people. So nice! 5 stars! Oh also it might seem obvious but if you go here to get new running shoes, ideally wear clothing you can jog around in... and I wore the shoes I typically run in which they used for the gait analysis which I thought was helpful.

Although it's on the smaller side for an REI, it is bigger than it seems. They have decent selection of gear and brands - definitely all the essentials. You can order online as well to pick up at or ship to the store if a specific item is not available. I tend to utilize this if there is something specific (brand/color, etc) that I know I want and then it's super efficient to pick up. The staff is super nice and always happy to guide to the section you are looking for. They are also helpful if you are returning an item or exchanging and I love their commitment to sustainability in the community as well. I always see people down in the bike/repair area so that seems to be a super convenient option to have for a the cyclists in Boston. I swear, every store in Boston feels like the staff are doing you a favor, and walk around like lethargic former crack addicts on the last leg of withdrawal. You do get the occasional happy girl behind the counter at Nike on Newbury, but everyone else is pure molasses. Then I walked into Under Armour at the Pru, and everything changed. First, that ginormous torso with the Patriots t-shirt is just plain cool, but it gets better. I honestly felt like I was in Lululemon or Kit & Ace, where staff really engage you. I walked in there originally looking for sweatpants, but staff were so engaging that I walked out with 4 different types, and to this day, love every one of them. I'm hoping this isn't just new store enthusiasm, and really want to enjoy coming back in the future. For now though, this is the only sports retail store I look forward to on future shopping trips, and as always, their products are top notch. Keep it up!
