These people are always super helpful. Even if you have no idea what you need or what's wrong with your bike, they don't act stuck-up like a lot of snobby bike places. And they have some nice biking maps. read more

I went into Quad Cycles' new location today to look into options either for getting my (rather old) bike overhauled/tuned up or for buying a new bike altogether. The guy I talked to was really friendly and seemed well-informed. I haven't yet decided which road I'm going to take (this review is based solely on my information-getting mission), but so far my experience there has been a positive one. read more

I brought my bike there and asked them to fix a flat, expecting that it would take a couple days for them to get it back to me. They told me it'd be ready the next morning and I was thrilled. It took me 15 minutes to drive home and as I was going up the stairs to my apartment they called and told me they'd fixed my tires. Friendly salespeople, speedy service and a good price. Can't beat it. read more

Jest bought a Fuji Absolute 2.0 from here yesterday and had a great experience. The kid who helped me out knew apwhat he was talking about and was very helpful/ friendly. He also gave me a deal on a great bike. I wish I had caught his name so I could post it up here but he younger with dark hair. Aside from that the shop has a good selection of bikes and is not cramped (like the bicycle exchange in Cambridge). If you are looking for a mid price-high end bike I recommend checking these guys out. read more

I've always had good experiences at Quad. Since moving to Arlington about 3.5 years ago, they have become our go-to bike shop, though we love the guys at the Bike Stop just because they're nice people. Justin, who we usually deal with, is great. Case in point - we crashed on ice last week. My bike was fine but hubby's bike was a bit off-kilter so we took it in right after the crash. Justin said he'd do his best to turn it around ASAP. That was at 10 am on Thursday. We got a call before 5 pm telling us it was done. And it was in great shape. And it was supposed to be his day off but he had to come. We were back in business on Friday for our commute. It's never cheap, but then again, I'd rather spend the money on my bike than on my car. read more

Great people who know their stuff, and will take the time to talk to you (granted weekends get very busy). Also, great group rides!

I recently signed up for a sprint triathlon. In desperate need of a bike, I went to numerous bike shops to try to understand the sport and get a feel for what I would need. Quad Cycles was the only shop that focused on my current experience level in the sport compared to the other shops who just tried selling me anything and everything. Rustem set me up with a bike that was in my price range and experience level. At any bike shop you can buy a bike, but at Quad Cycles Rustem sells relationships as he even invited me to their weekly weekend rides to get acquainted with fellow cyclists. It just shows he has a true passion for the sport and wants to share it with other people. I won't be going to any other bike shop other than this one. read more

I agree with Tim & Darren. My husband and I went in to buy two bikes. The first visit we collected make/model suggestions. I researched them, decided the recommendations were a good fit, but a day later discovered one of the bikes was sold. I found a place in West Newton that had more of that make at the same price. As a Lexington resident, I preferred Quad Cycles and decided to stay loyal to a local business. My bike purchase, went as planned (men's model instead of women's), but for my husband we got the "up-sell" , supposedly because of his height. The owner/manager (?) offered to still "give us a deal" because we bought two bikes, but he didn't match the original deal and actually cut it. Even so, we were still OK, now spending 15% more than agreed on the 1st visit. When I went to pay with my AMEX he complained. Then no help to get the bikes into the car. Not necessary, but I would think after selling nearly $1,000 of merchandise in two ten-minute visits, then up-selling, then complaining at how the customer planned to pay, one might make an effort to do the same, and be as loyal/helpful as I was. We will be going elsewhere for tune-ups and MT. read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. I took my bike in for a tune-up and got a tune-down. While performing the tune-up they created a problem with the gears. After taking the bike back twice they refused to acknowledge that there was a problem (even though the bike was clanking away as I shifted gears in front of the clerk). The clerk said that any issue I was experiencing was due to my bare basic parts. Funny, my bare basic parts shifted my gears just fine before the so-called tune-up. The owner was present while I was voicing my concerns, but he was too busy helping the customers with armloads of expensive gear and accessories. Or perhaps he was just too embarrassed to help me because when I first picked up the bike he said he tuned it personally and proclaimed himself to be very finicky. Not finicky enough! Quad Cycles has an opportunity to be a great local bike shop in a town with a superb biking community. It's clear to me that they dropped the ball here. If you want honest, dependable service go to the Bike Stop in Arlington or go the extra miles to one of the Wheelworks locations. Don't throw away your money and your time at Quad Cycles. read more

I've purchased bikes at Quad, as well as had them serviced, for the last 10 years. Every time I have been treated fairly; even to the point of wondering if they are making enough money on the transaction. Most every quick repair has been done at parts cost without a labor charge. Only one time did I feel I was being pushed to get into making a more expensive purchase than I was comfortable with. When I clearly stated that point I was immediately directed into the right arena. I have a hard time connecting the negative reviews listed above with the store and staff I have come to know. I realize that people have off-days and I am hopeful that I will not visit the shop when full-moon craziness surfaces. Nonetheless, this shop has been consistently good. On a general note: It is interesting to read the rankings of the various bike shops in the area. Each one has multiple horror-story reviews. Yet I've had positive experiences in these stores too. I wonder how many customers really understand what a pain-in-the-keester and a death-defying act it is to run a small, retail business. Give 'me some slack. read more

(I've been here 3 or 4 times) I needed parts today; otherwise I wouldn't be on the road (it's my main mode to work). The shop had almost everything I needed. I had to go to the hardware store up the street to make a chain-ring tool. There are good folks at this place. The owner was really engaged on my first visit. It was a really nice day and so that was a nice surprise. At the end of the day they have one or two good mechanics. If you want to buy bikes and such this will serve you fine. If you want to be around grand-masters well look up the best bike shops in Belmont and Somerville MA Elm St.. I cant give a bad review on a fundamental level, but this isn't a bikers bike shop. read more

I go to Quad Cycles to fix a flat tire, since I was nearby and did not have a spare tube with me. The guy (I think Ben) fixes it quickly and I go up to the counter to pay. The price was $10 for the tube (a presta valve, 700x19-23), and $15 for labor. Keep in mind that Amazon charges $5.50 for the same kind of tube. I know bike shops do tend to mark up accessories a bit, but this is nearly 2x the price! Even worse, I ride back home and ride again the next day, and get a flat tire again. This was over a distance of not more than 30 miles since visiting the shop. I don't know what mistake they made, but there is no way under normal riding in Boston that I could have gotten 2 over such a short period. Terrible experience, given the $25 spent. read more

I reserved a bike for rental on March 23, with the idea of using it for the Berkshires to Boston ride. I paid this outfit $159.38, which is a bit high as I later found out. On July 26, I found out this shop isn't one of those that cooperate with the tour, so I reserved a bike elsewhere and called Quad Cycles to cancel. I SPOKE TO THE OWNER HIMSELF, IN PERSON. He told me IN PERSON that he would refund my rental fee to my credit card. He actually said he was doing it while I was still on the phone. He didn't do it. He still hasn't done it, even after I reminded him by email twice. Don't do business with this guy! read more

We went in here asking about a bike tune up for a cheap bike. Byron really listened to us. Some high end bike shops I have been in won't give you the time of day if you aren't spending at least $1,000. Not here. We were treated with the utmost respect. We ended up buying a used bike for a reasonable price that is in good condition with money back guarantee. No sales pressure. He just wanted us to be happy with the bike and make sure the bike met our needs. He is definitely a cyclist who wants others to enjoy the sport read more

My bike got a flat, so I figured since it's closer and the only shop within the radius that was open I'd drop by. The tech that helped was very nice, but typical salesman trying to sell you anything. They replaced my tube and installed a pouch, tire pump, and repair kit that I purchased from them. So I headed on my way and was happy to have my bike running again. Two miles out I got a flat on the same tire again. Now this is bullshit especially when I just got it replaced. I was actually glad that I purchased the pump, because they forgot to tighten the valve stem and all the air had leaked out. That's just pure carelessness, and what a way to win new customers. Actually came back to get my headset tightened recently, and the service sucked ass. I waited around and the owner took off to help someone else that came after me, and the other staff didn't even acknowledge that i needed help. Honesty I would do this myself if I had the tools, and it'll take me 1 minute. He even charged me $3. I worked as an autobody and mechanic tech for 12 years and never charged anybody for tightening a freaking screw. Not really the best way to reel in customers. The owner is a plane ripoff and bike snob. I hate this place and will never ever come back again even if I have to drive 30 minutes away for something small. If you're a newbie, this place will eat you alive. Please do yourself a favor and stay away. First impressions always count, and I'm a sucker for giving them the benefit of the doubt. read more

I've had good experiences here. The staff is always friendly and has always been able to fix problems I've taken in. That's what I look for in a shop. Can they fix my problem and do it for a reasonable price? Granted other people go to buy a new bike and other things (which is to be expected), my criteria is based on service and labor. They've always provided me with good repair service and helpful advice. Many times they don't even charge me for labor. In one case, I was dead in the water on a rainy day in February (rare, but it was raining and not snowing in Feb) riding back to Cambridge when my tire punctured (not just inner tube, but the sidewall of the tire as well). Soaking wet, I walked in and they took care of me right away. They put a new tire on the bike, replaced the rear worn pads, and replaced a stripped rear screw (my own doing) and charged me $10 for labor. Now, I waited for the repair so I know it took them at least 30 minutes. They had to take my rear fender off the rear brake off (stripped screw), replace the pads, realign them, replace the tube and tire, etc. The fact that they only charged me $10 for labor for the whole ordeal was great and this experience has had me going back to them for my biking needs. Regarding other posts of "pushy sales", well, these guys run a business, and I expect them to sell me bikes from their inventory. I test rode a 2 year old Jamis steel bike (though still new) and decided I wasn't in love with it. I expected a pitch from the guy about how great it was, but for me a test ride tells me what I need to know. He tried to sell it to me, sure. In the end I didn't buy it but I still go to them for service and I've been happy. The staff is very friendly and I've never been overcharged for labor. Again, the scope of needs from this shop is narrow than others' needs, but the bottom line is they've always met my expectations and I'll continue to use them as my primary shop moving forward. read more

I went in to Quad Cycles a couple of weeks ago with my boyfriend. We have gone in to the shop a couple times before and had good experiences (why I can't give it 1 star). He was looking for inserts and I wanted to try on some shoes. I knew I wasn't going to buy any that day but felt it was reasonable to see what this shop had, try on a couple of different sizes, etc. The person helping us told us he was a sales rep and was just filling in for the day. He asked me what type of bike I have and a few preliminary questions. I tried on 2 different sizes and told him I didn't even have clips yet and just wanted to get a feel for the shoes. His response was, "please tell me you are not going to by these online, I saw that look in your eye." I said I wasn't sure and wanted see what the shop had, which I think is very reasonable to do at a store...that's why stores exist. He then informed us that we were "fitlifters" and told us that we were the reason why bike shops are going out of business. I felt extremely uncomfortable and didn't know what to say. There was a very good chance that I would have bought my first pair of cycling shoes at Quad Cycles but this person ruined it for me. I believe in supporting local businesses and discussing the purchase with someone knowledgeable in the store but after this experience I will be perfectly happy ordering a pair online. read more

Strange experience here.... The sales people I dealt with were non pushy, genuinely helpful and pleasant people. The story is that on my first trip to the store, I tried a bike and liked it. The sales person #1, wanting to sell the 2010 'old stock' bike, offered it to me at a 40% discount. We agreed that the bike would need an offset seat post so that it was a better fit and we left it that the sale person would see what they could get. Two days later I returned and realized that they wanted me to pay for the bike to set this +/-$30 process going. Again, very helpful, different sales person #2. I had no problem paying, but then the store computer would not process the transaction. Sales person #2 goes to store owner, who after a short conference comes over and says he would not sell me the bike for the agreed upon price! [He wanted more]. He does this without any sense of remorse and in the process humiliates the sales person #2. So.... the owner will maybe eventually make an extra $100 on the bike, not worth compromising one's ethics for, methinks..... Happy ending for me, as I drove up to Papa Wheelies in Portsmouth and bought a bike from a really great store! read more

my husband took his bike in for a full tune up. he commutes on his bike, noticed a few things were wrong with it, and had a week off. quad cycles is near our home so he decided to try them out. he expected the bill to be around $100-200 but instead the owner convinced him to do a list of things that came to $380. what do you get for $380? i can't really tell you. it's been a few WEEKS, and my husband says the 2nd shifter doesn't work properly. the brakes are a bit off because the cable is rusted and was not replaced. the last straw was the flat tire he got yesterday. he had a thorn resistant inner tube in the back tire that the shop had replaced with a regular inner tube (to the tune of $25 material cost) and it did not hold up. needless to say, we do NOT recommend this shop for service/repairs. expect to pay ~50% extra for shoddy work. really wish my husband had checked out their reviews before he had work done there or walked out after he got the estimate. it gets worse-- he'll have to bring his bike to another shop to fix the brakes and chain now. UGH! read more

I took my bike in for a seat post bolt and planned to install it myself. The guy helping me started to install it anyway. Problem was he had the washer on the tabbed side of the bolt meaning the washer won't lay flat. Also, he cranked it from the left side- wrong. The owner corrected him and took over. I explained the way the bolts are to be installed and the guy seemed in a little over his head. The owner started tightening the bolt down with the saddle incredibly low. I told him to stop because I was only going to raise the saddle height anyway. When he heard this he started pulling the saddle up out of the frame but the bolt was locked down so the seat post got scratched from top to bottom. I pointed it out to him and he raised his voice saying that I blamed him for trying to help me and that my seat post was the wrong size. I've adjusted that seat post a few times and taken it in and out a bunch when I pack the bike in the car or disassembled it for cleaning; it had no scratches before and now it looks pretty scuffed up. read more

I would give this shop zero stars if that was an option. I came in to look at mountain bikes and the owner was incredibly rude and belittling. Based on the other reviews I've seen here, it looks like I'm not the only one who experienced horrible customer service. I came in knowing what I was looking for and had some questions about the differences between two bike models. The owner was not knowledgeable and visibly became upset and rude when I asked questions. Needless to say, I walked out of this shop as fast as I could! Definitely will not be coming back here for anything! read more

Very disappointing as this is my LBS, and I really want to support them. I went in to buy simple gear cable & housing. They attempted to upsell me a $50 premium cable on something that should be $10 at most. Maybe it was a simple misunderstanding, but it felt disreputable to me. Buyer beware: if I hadn't known that this is something that bike shops typically sell for a fraction of the cost, they would have fleeced me. read more

I used to love this place...did a lot of bike rides with them over the years. Today though, I went in to buy a screw for a cleat. I waited for them to deal with the one other customer that was in there, and then waited some more while they dealt with two OTHER customers, as I clearly wasn't as important, only wanting a screw. After 25 minutes, I was given a screw that was slightly filed to fit. The owner tried to charge me $3....for a $0.60 screw. In his own words "some people want to TIP me for service like this." My advice...go someplace else...there are lots of good bike shops in the Arlington/Somerville area. Places that even value their customers. read more

My experiences with Quad Cycles have been great. I can't imagine receiving better customer service anywhere else. My first visit, about a month ago, was for a mirror. Then, last week I saw an announcement for a Bike Swap that Quad Cycles was running that weekend. I decided to put two bikes in for sale, the specialists at Quad helped determine the value and sale price. They both sold and the great thing is that 10% of the sale price is donated to the Arlington Education Fund. What a nice community benefit! Then, using the remaining proceeds of the sale, I applied that towards the purchase of a comfy bike for my rides on the bike path. Ben, the specialist that worked with me at Quad, helped me with selecting a bike, answered all of my questions, set up two bikes for demo rides, and made me feel very comfortable with the decision that I made. The Scott bike is perfect for me. Thank you Ben and thank you Quad Cycles. I've found the perfect local bike shop! read more

I had a terrific experience at Quad Cycles. I was referred to this shop by Shimano after the shop I had been using could not successfully correct a problem with my electronic shifting. Worked with Rustem for bike selection and Byron for fitting. Rustem was very knowledgeable and willing to make it work. I had previously been to the Cannondale Company store and figured out basically what I was looking for, just a side note about what may have affected my shopping experience (more later). Coming in and wanting a Synapse Carbon Disc 105, Rustem was honest about how great the bike was but was equally honest about the Scott bikes that were similar and less expensive if my budget was lower. For my wife we got an awesome deal on a new but couple year older Focus with 105 and carbon frame for less than a new alloy with basic groupset. (More) I think it is key when shopping to walk in knowing what you want, meaning groupset and ride style. Get the feel for the shop and what the owner is trying to sell you. Collect information and then walk out. We checked a number of other stores and did not like the options available for us or what they were trying to sell Our fitting with Byron was outstanding. He was very helpful and knowledgable about our ride style and form. He was also very patient as we spent a few hours with him. Really probably the most enjoyable part of the process and will continue to be so as we tweak into next summer. I like Quad Cycles for the folks in the shop, their selection, and proximity to the Minute Man for testing. With regards to other reviews I could definitely understand price concerns about parts but this is a small shop with far less ability to scale pricing. I know shops exist but I would argue a shop would need to choose a business model. Hardline on bike price or components. Overall I like their bikes and service. I'll be back for a mountain bike I had my eye on! read more

Decided to leave a bit of info on this store to help others along in their decision. Before doing business with Quad Cycles, I checked on Yelp here and noticed that it had mixed reviews, with some bad experiences, and some good ones. I have to say, I think it's very comical that the ranking says "Not Kid Friendly" and then there's a picture of the owner with a kid, but he looks like he's wanting to get back to mom/dad with outstretched arms ,just too funny. Anyhow, I brought my bike in for a tuneup here, and very disappointed with the service. Out of the past 13 years worth my bike has had, this was the worst one it has ever received. I had one tune-up before where a brake pad was actually put on backwards, and I noted it and they fixed immediately, with a bit of embarrassment (But hey, it actually still did work for braking), but other than that, the tuneup was great. This time though, I'm not even sure they actually did a tune-up. Upon receiving my bike back and riding the first few feet, the spokes settled in with the usual pinging, meaning they did true the tires, and the drivetrain was fairly clean but I think that was it. Lube was sparingly applied. And no questions if "I had any questions" or comments from them like "You might want to watch this" etc. , meaning I felt they just brought it in, threw it through the wash, and spit it out. The reason for bringing it in was my brakes not working well, as well as issues with my front hub not moving so smoothly, which I stated upon coming in, and wheels needing to be trued. JUST a few days later, I had the back brakes seizing up, and upon investigation, noticed that the rear cable inside the sheathing was pretty well rusted and not lubed at all. Did I not bring it in to take care of this sort of thing? And I even suggested it, and that it should be time for new brake pads. One tire was still out of true, but upon bringing it in, it was fixed, with a little bit of hesitation. On with the front hub... It now needs to be replaced or repacked completely, as it's now actually vibrating from friction. Another reason I initially brought it in and mentioned the issue, cause the front hub was making noise. So now I have to bring it elsewhere to have the hub repacked or replaced, and more time down on my bike which I ride daily. They seem okay inside for personality. I think the owner genuinely wants to provide good service and have a great store, but his chosen employees don't seem to give off the vibe that they want to be doing what they're doing, or at least they didn't care to be giving my bike any love. I was also told immediately upon bringing it in that I would need "This and That" new components as mine were worn, and stated I just wanted a tune up and cleaned well. I felt more like I was entering a new car lot than a servicing department. Overall, I will never bring my bike in here for service again. I'd only use it for the occasional purchase of a part/component if I really needed it cause of it's convenience to Mass ave. Other than that, it;s as far as my relationship will go there. read more

I went in to test ride a cannondale bike at Quad Cycles in Arlington. While I enjoyed the ride, I needed some more time to think about the purchase. I informed the salesman (older guy) that I wasn't ready to buy the bike right now, and he immediately took offense. He questioned whether I knew what I was missing by asking if I was aware of what "ultegra" meant (it's a type of drivetrain). When I said I was unfamiliar with ultegra, he responded that I was "the worst customer ever" and continued to talk down to me until I left the store. I was on the fence about buying the bike, especially because the price was excellent, but I will definitely not return to this store. read more

After bringing my bike to Quad Cycles today I have to agree with Darren N's review dated 05/27/2009 in which he stated that this place is "A horrible shop with an equally horrible owner." That was certainly my experience. I brought my bike in to have its derailleur adjusted. No big deal. The mechanic took one look at my bike and told me that my crank was loose, my handlebars were loose and I needed new parts for my brakes, to start. The funny thing is that these guys totally tuned up my bike about 3 years ago and I had only ridden it twice since. I had taken it out over the weekend and it was fine except that I had some trouble shifting into the lowest gear. That is the only thing that I wanted to have fixed. When I started to question mechanic #1 why I needed this additional work, mechanic #2 came over to help mechanic #1. When I said that the crank and the handlebars didn't feel loose to me, they told me that it took an expert to feel that. When I started to question them about the brakes the man who appeared to be the owner basically told me that I was taking up his mechanics' valuable time. After all, they could each be making $60 an hour for the owner by repairing bikes if they weren't wasting their time talking to me, a customer. I felt that they were trying to sell me repairs that I did not need. If they could have explained clearly why the repairs were needed, I would probably have OK'd them. But the bike had only been ridden twice since its last tune-up. I got a bad feeling from the two mechanics and especially from the owner. I said to the owner that maybe I should take my bike elsewhere and he said, "Please do", which I thought was extremely rude. There was not a single other customer in the store during this whole time. I wonder if he would have behaved so rudely if there had been. I live in Arlington and I like to patronize local businesses. But you can be sure that I will never set foot in Quad Cycles again. There are other bike shops around that actually care about customers and bikes. PS Notice how most of the reviews are either 1 star or 5 star with very few in between? The 1 star reviews ring true to my experience. read more

Although the bikes were good, we really felt ripped off as we are not from the area and came in on Mother's Day to ride for an hour as a family. we were charged $140 for 4 bikes and they would not provide any hourly rate for us. A good small shop for one to one customer service. I was somewhat disappointed that I let the salesperson (owner) talk me into a used bike with a small frame for such a tall person. I've had great experiences with Quadcycles. My most recent experience was when I was unable to get one of my pedals off my bike--and even worse, I stripped the hex screw, which was the only way of getting it off. I brought it in to Quad. After trying a few other things, the mechanic filed a new hex fitting into the screw. Even then, it was too tight to get off. He, and the other mechanic, and the owner of the shop, all took a whack at it. Eventually, working together, all three of them were finally able to do it. It took them half an hour, and they only charged me ten dollars. I thought it was a great deal. And they were friendly, helpful, and had a good attitude throughout. read more

DO NOT GO HERE!!!! This place is a SCAM! I went to go get my tubing fixed in my bike and it was $5 for the tube and $10 for the service charge! This place is open all the time which is good, but the service charge and prices are ridiculous. Not to mention the guys that work here are SO sketchy. read more

It looks like people either love or hate Quad Cycles. I can tell you that after recently buying a bike there so far I am in the "love them" camp. Buying a bicycle is a big deal for me. I ride a lot but this is the first new machine that I ended up owning. So far I am really happy with the experience: there was no sales pressure, I got a disk brake-equipped cyclocross bike with Ultegra components for the price of the 105 groupset. They switched out tires to gatorskins at no charge and upgraded the bike rack at cost. The bike was ready when promised. So far I rode the bike daily for a week in slit and snow and it performs beautifully. I can't wait to ride it again! I gave them 4 stars rather than 5 because I just became their customer. I hope I will be able to upgrade it to 5 in the near future. read more

The last time I took my bike to Quad Cycles I promise myself I would never go back. Rude owner, always trying to steal money from you (they wanted me to buy a whole new rack for my bike after a broken bolt, which I replaced for 2 dollar from the manufacturer!), they charge for parts you never asked to be replace (not checking over the phone if you want to do it or not). For a last minute repair, I ended up going back because I didn't want to miss a ride. I rather drive/walk/run or stay home than asking them for a repair ever ever again. Don't go, try other stores, ask a friend or order online. Zero stars! read more

Okay, I will start by saying the owner of the place is a very nice guy. Outside of that this place is miserable. I brought my bike in for a tune up and a new chain mid day Monday. They notified me I should change my back brakes as well so I decided why not? The issue I have is with their customer service and the way they treat you while you are in the store. I am a man in my early 20s and usually have a 5 o'clock shadow. By this look you wouldn't know I own my own business and can afford the repairs on the bike, maybe. But the clerk kept on asking me if I was okay with the $150 it was going to cost me for this stuff, even to the point where he told me I was going to have to pay when I picked it up, or I wouldn't be able to get the bike. I have bought from them in the past and had issues with them not calling to let me know the bike is ready and I am already regretting this trip to them before even finishing my transaction. read more
