I hosted my 30th birthday party here and I don't think it could have gone any better! Seemless booking for 14 and we were stationed in a room above the restaurant which was gorgeous! Attentive service and fast food and drinks! Everything came out hot and perfect!!!! This was my second time hosting an event here but my first time with such a big group! We were able to split the check evenly which I informed my guests of before hand! I couldn't imagine hosting anywhere else!!! This is the best restaurant in Austin !!!!
I dunno whatsamatter with me but I apparently have failed to review Qi (pronounced Chee) before now. Perhaps because we are always visiting in transit through Austin. We've dined here for lunch I think five times now. And we will NEVER visit Austin w/o a stop here. LOL. Our server on our first visit was Danny and he again attended to us this visit this week. He is absolutely wonderful. He is managing this store now. This is one of the most enjoyably attractive restaurants ever as you can see from all the pics here on Yelp. Qi's dumplings are on the upper levels of heaven side of divine. Try the shrimp har gow dumplings. The egg drop and hot and sour soups are exceptional. We love the salt and pepper shrimp but this week we splurged for the Honey Akaushi Beef at lunch. Oh my word. Fork-apart tender cubes of savory beef with grilled onions in a honey, black pepper sauce to die for. It will be a challenge to considerer ever looking at the menu again as long as the kitchen is doing this dish. Qi has the most wonderful chopsticks. They're beautiful and so enjoyable to use. I bought two pairs our first visit and I take them to use at Chinese and Japanese restaurants here at home! LOL. Free garage parking in the same building. What is not to love about this restaurant?
Came here with a group of coworkers and we sat in a private room upstairs. The ambiance of the whole place is very upscale, and late on a Monday night it was relatively busy. The food was good, could use a little more flavor. The presentation and service were outstanding, and the drinks and cocktail selection was fantastic. Overall, Id say, great place for a corporate function when you are not footing the bill and can try a lot of things on the menu, to find what you like most. My favorites were the duck and flat noodles. Oddly, the restaurant does not have an espresso machine, which was a bummer for some of our coworkers who wanted a little boost after a long day and a filling meal.
Farm to table produce made for a super fresh experience. We were the last seating of the night, so servers were in clean up mode. Kitchen closed prior to the end of our meal. The lighting was a tad dim which made seeing table difficult. Tables are VERY close which made conversations carry from table to table. Salt & pepper shrimp and Mu shu pork were very good.
Delicious food Everytime. Service, however, is hit or miss apparently. Brought my Mom and daughter for their first time for lunar new year. We had mediocre service, less experience based than my first two visits, with little to no conversation or recommendations. We were the only table they dropped to-go boxes for, every other table they boxed their food for them, which was what happened my first two times. Makes it feel less of an experience than normal. They also gave us a desert menu that had 10 ish options and only 2 or 3 were available, which wasn't shared when we asked about desert but only when we were ready to order. Beautiful decorations, louder than normal based on the new year but nothing terrible. akaushi beef, moo shu pork, and salt and epper shrimp all phenomenal. The soup dumplings never disappoint so that's always our first bite. Cocktails took some time but we're always delicious. We will probably be back but might take some time to forget the sun par service.
Qi Austin has serious style -- it's like dim sum went to finishing school and came back with impeccable manners and great taste. We started with the soup dim sum, which was soothing and refined, like a comforting whisper of flavor. Then came the Crispy Sea Cucumber Har Kaw, and wow. Easily the star of the show -- crispy on the outside, tender and shrimp-like on the inside, with a sauce so good I briefly considered licking the plate. (I didn't. But I thought about it.) The duck pancakes were also quite good -- rich, flavorful, and beautifully presented. But while everything tasted fresh and well executed, there was a certain "something" missing to push it into five-star, write-home-to-grandma territory. Maybe a touch more warmth, or just one more standout bite. Still, Qi has its act together -- refined atmosphere, attentive staff, and dishes that make you feel a little fancier than you really are. Four stars, but very solid ones. I'll be back... probably dreaming about that har kaw the whole way there. And be careful, they close from 2:00-4:00!
TL;DR: Great choice if you are trying to impress someone -- pricy but the flavors are out of this world! I would come back. Food: We ordered the Zha Jiang Noodle, Truffle Egg Fried Rice, and Honey Akaushi Beef. + Truffle Egg Fried Rice: I would recommend trying this dish! The truffle smells really good, and the fried rice is quite good too. It doesn't feel oily, and it's just really well done fried rice. + Honey Akaushi Beef: I would recommend trying this dish! It is on the pricier end of $30 for not necessarily a ton of meat, but it is some of the best beef I have ever had. The dish comes out sizzling and smells absolutely incredible. The meat is not tough or chewy: it's super easy to cut into. It's got a nice sweetness to it and is honestly so so tasty! - Zha Jiang Noodle: While tasty, I might not order this dish next time just because I thought it was a little too sweet for me. Service: We went without a reservation but were luckily able to get seated quickly since we went before peak dinner time. The service was friendly and quick. Water was refilled without us having to ask. They were kind enough to pack our leftovers for us too in a container and nice bag. Ambiance: The dim, warm lighting sets the mood and is really easy on the eyes. I like that the ceiling is covered with umbrellas as lights, it's a cool aesthetic. Since we went in October, there were Halloween decorations around the place too which was neat.
Qi is nestled in a building at the corner of 6th Street and Bowie (across from the Whole Foods at 6th and Lamar). Parking in this area seems to be relatively straightforward. Reservations are made through Resy. Upon entering, we were asked if we had a reservation, to which the response was no. They sat us at the kitchen bar area, where you can get a view of the folks wrapping meat and preparing dishes. As we pursued the menu, we settled on an NA Coconut Margarita and an NA Tingling Electric Daisy. We decided on Chicken Taro Eggsrolls, Scallop Caviar Sui Mai, Pan Fried Akaushi Beef Baos, Shrimp Har Gow, and Szechuan Peppercorn Alligator. I've never had any issues with any of the dim-sum items at any of their other restaurants, and positively, this continues to be the case at Qi; you can't go wrong with any of the dim sum options. However, the alligator dish was a disgusting abomination. Soggy, greasy, and an absolute failure of the intended flavor, clearly due to extremely poor execution, as it shares none of the desired aspects of the corresponding laziji dish. You'll notice: way too few dried chili peppers. The edibles should be buried under mounds of chilies. Way too few Szechuan peppercorns. Add a lack of salt, and you have a very bland, uninteresting dish. Not spicy, not tingly, and they didn't even fry correctly since the meat wasn't even crispy. A very sad dish. Other than that, the restaurant is quite small. They have interesting decor, a small army in the kitchen, and a waiting area in the lobby of the main building. Some of their other restaurants feature larger amounts of square footage, as well as variations on menu items.
Qi is a great spot for quality asian food. There is free parking in a garage attached to the building which is super convenient. The decor of the restaurant is also really pretty! We ordered the chicken turnovers, truffle egg fried rice, and the szechuan peppercorn alligator. The chicken turnovers were adorable and had great flavor with a crispy exterior. I'm a big fan of truffle in general so I really liked the truffle egg fried rice. I didn't try the alligator, but my husband did enjoy it!
Stopped in again for dinner at the request of my fiancé who loves their seafood curry. I chose to get the Peking Duck. This was my first time having this dish. It was quite pleasant. The duck was not too gamey and the skin had a perfect crisp. I originally ordered to go but when we decided to eat inside instead, the waiters and hostesses immediately accommodated my request. I was very pleased with the outdoor seating and enjoyed the fresh air. Check them out for a nice date night in Austin.
Best Mai Tai ever. The Xao Long Bao soup dumplings and the shrimp stuffed eggplant were very good. The BBQ pork buns were standard issue, but what's not to love. The bok choy was outstanding. The service was better than average. They have indoor and outdoor seating. But even if you sit outside, snack or the interior decor and the bar. Amazing! We were spoiled on great dim sum in California. It's good to know we can still find classic dim sum in Texas. read more

Wow! What a phenomenal experience. This place gets all the stars. Elevated, flavorful, and memorable. All our dishes hit the spot! I will be coming back and trying more! A sister restaurant to Lin Asian Bar / a bit more upscale. Food: - soup dumplings 10/10 fantastic & resembles that of Lin - bao: I'm a bit of a traditionalist, so I didn't line the meatball form inside, but the dough was fluffy, sweet, and crisp all at once - pan sear chicken basil dumplings; while the crispness was perfect, was missing an ooomph with the flavor profile, but appreciated them getting the basil in such a forward flavor - Pork belly - super tender and saucy, but felt the sauce took away from the actual flavor of the pork - pork & lychee; taste great and the crunch texture, but it's giving boujee Panda Express Service - 10/10 was consistently checked in on, I even happened to know someone from another restaurant I frequented at!!! And they were fast, professional, and gave good recommendations for being a first timer. The ambiance was low light and upscale, a lot of old dynasty inspired artwork, but not over the top. I sat at the dumpling bar so I was able to see the handmade dumplings getting perfectly put together and steamed, which provided nice entertainment throughout the evening. read more

One of my favorite spots in Austin, the best Dim Sum I have found, love it all! Service is always friendly and fast, food is great quality! The place is beautiful and has convenient free parking. Recommend the Mango Bomb for dessert!!! Love it! All dumplings and chicken are delicious, sesame balls and salt and pepper tofu!!! Wow!!! I don't think I have ordered anything I did not love! Good I live far from it or I would be putting lots of weight in just delights! 100% recommended! read more

This is a late post, but I had an unforgettable experience there back in July. I was visiting from out of town and my cousin had recommended Qi Austin. To be quite honest, it wasn't on my radar because I had come with an Austin foodie list of things to try but decided to proceed and trust his judgement. My party and I were served by Danny who was incredibly knowledgable and had the BEST recommendations for dinner. Drink knowledge was very impressive too. I had worked in the restaurant industry for over 10 years so I knew I was being helped by someone who was very good at their job. So we had full faith to have him decide pretty much our entire dinner. There were a couple of dishes we added to the list but the rest was taken care of by Danny. We enjoyed the food but we enjoyed the service even more. If we didn't have Danny as your server then we know we wouldn't have had the same memorable experience. Promote the man! He knows what he's doing! read more

Beautiful restaurant! Clean, automated bidets in the restrooms, and outstanding service. Our server was so helpful and attentive! The food is good with very generous portions. We were staying in a hotel so boxed up all the beautiful leftovers and gifted them to our Uber driver. He was beyond thrilled! The star of the show, in my opinion, are their cocktails! Some of the best I've had anywhere. No sugary mixers, all fresh, strong, perfectly balanced, and inventive. Will definitely be back for the dim sum brunch next time I visit on a Sunday! read more

10/10 loved this place! Everything was so good! The soup dumplings were so yummy! Very flavorful and hot off the press! The basil chicken dumplings were good as well. Very moist and crunchy bottom! As mains we got the sesame chicken and then Hakka noodle! Sesame chicken was sweet and a little spicy even with us telling it to be spicy! Finally made it to Qi while visiting Austin. Lovely grandiose interior (Modern Asian). We were greeted and sat right away (it's first come, first served). Our waiter was very attentive, and well versed with the menu which was very helpfully. The menu is family style (Sharable entrees). We started with the soup dumplings which were so yummy. Then we had the pan seared chicken dumplings (very satisfying). The salt and pepper lobster was simply delicious and decadent. The same chicken was delightful and the honey beef was pure perfection. It was three of us and we were stuff. Cocktails are wonderful. My only gripe were the desserts. With what we ate for dinner we thought we were going to impressed by our desserts. Wrong. Presentation was nice but taste totally missed its target. Not moist or rich at all. Very lackluster and tastes like it came out of a box. But I will come back to eat and for cocktails for sure. read more

Upscale Chinese food with some god Tier unique dishes and amazing service. Cost $50 before tip | Rating 8/10. Pros: Pretty, spacious, modern, delicious signature dishes. Cons: Some dishes don't upscale well. Recommended by a friend we went to eat with four others. Made a reservation before hand because they are BUSY! Promptly seated and our excellent server knew all the dishes, made recommendation, and took care of us very well. No dish is bad but some Chinese staples don't improve much when upscaled. The Crispy Seafood Noodle didn't impress nor did the truffle egg fried rice, or deep fried alligator. The Moo Shu Pork was great with the wraps to hold it. The three dishes that I will come back for on their own merit are the Scallop Shu Mai which melt in your mouth, the Duck Scallion pancakes with the perfect sauce and crunch ratios, and the Beet Sorbet which for someone who dislikes deserts was a lick the plate clean scenario! If you go you must get one of these three. Overall the presentation and many of the dishes justify the price so do spoil yourself here on a date and you will find at least one dish that blows your mind. read more

We had their Dim Sum brunch...excellent! I loved the potato and shrimp balls. There are so many dishes to choose from. Everything is really good and cooked fresh to order. I had to try their chicken feet...not a fan but I couldn't resist the experience. There's no real meat on chicken feet so it's deep fried skin, bone, and gristle but that's to be expected. The service was great and I loved the decor. Lots of Asian folks in there so that's always a good recommendation for an Asian restaurant. read more

We held our first nights team dinner here at Qi Austin. Called a few weeks in advance to book a table for 17 people. Had a table that was semi private but in an open space right as soon as you walked in. When we got there, the server understood that there were going to be some dietary restrictions and asked if it was okay for him to help us order and make recommendations. He recommended the duck pancake, xiao long bao, peking duck, shaking beef, pan fried dumplings, lobster ha gao, orange chicken, veggies and lobster. Some standouts were the XLB, veggies, and the orange chicken. Unfortunately we found hair in one of the lobster dumplings, which turned us off. Other than that, good service, good drinks and would recommend. Didn't see many other Asian restaurants and coming from San Francisco, I would give the restaurant a 3.5/5. read more

Very accommodating to our large group of 15 (we did have reservations but needed to push it back an hour). The drinks were very good according to my party! And they were very attentive to us. Our server was supper knowledgeable on the dishes/drinks they had to offer. Everything here is "family" portions so get it to share. The food was good, but it wasn't amazing. I have definitely had better. The soup dumplings came with a cup (usually a big spoon) that you drink the soup from, but the cup just made it a little harder to enjoy tie dumpling. The atmosphere definitely made this dinner. read more

First time! I do like how they have a parking garage for customers and love the interior. The siu mai (they write it as sui mai on the menu but I'm pretty sure it's siu mai). I've had a lot of dim sum experience in Hong Kong and around with my Cantonese background. The dim sum that they served here is lacking in flavor-I believe dim sum should taste good with or without soy sauce. The honey akaushi beef (entree) is delicious and sweet! I was disappointed that they ran out of their popular crab meat dumplings. They should make more so that they last for the whole day. Portions are small compared to the price. It is about $15 on average per dim sum dish. In other dim sum places, dishes would be $3/$4. Expect to spend a lot if you want to be full. read more

My husband read about the @qiaustinrestaurant and wanted to celebrate his birthday early there. Made reservations for the Wu clan. You know it's a true foodie who would drive 2 hours one way for good food! I'm surprised yet thankful for free parking in the garage. We started off with 2 different Soup Dumplings: Shanghai and Crab Meat Fish Maw. These were almost double the size of ones in San Antonio and contain a lot of soup! The orange tea cups are especially to catch the soup as you bite into the dumpling! We ordered the Peking Duck, Whole Red Snapper in soy ginger sauce, Truffle Egg Fried Rice, Combination Fried Rice, Braised Oxtail, Honey Akaushi Beef, Pork Belly (cooked 24 hours), Sesame Chicken, and Seasonal Vegetable with Bird Nest. I felt as if I was transported to NYC's Chinatown. Phenomenal food! The 2 not-so-stellar dishes were the Honey Akaushi Beef and the Red Snapper. Some that had the beef had tender pieces, but I ended up with chewy ones. The fish was overcooked. Kris was an excellent server and the food came out quickly. Wish that Chef Ling was in. Her family is from Fujian province, where my grandparents are from. Would have love to chat in Fujian dialect. read more

Sunday brunch for dim sum with a party of 4 was a great idea to try Qi. Service was great and we arrived early and they were able to seat us. ORDER Shrimp har kaw Chicken taro egg roll Crispy chicken turnover Chicken feet Shanghai soup dumpling Beef potstickers Pork and shrimp sui mai zha jiang noodles sesame ball From our order our starter would be the chicken feet (don't knock it til you try it). Coming off the bench would be pork and shrimp su mai. While we would have to cut the soup dumpling. Service matches the upscale vibe for this place. Street parking is limited but there is a parking garage in the building. I'd recommend this place to anyone looking to celebrate a special occasion and newbies to dim sum. I would come back to try their dinner menu. read more

Good upscale Asian restaurant- Highly suggest ordering multiple starters and sharing. Liked that they had a lunch menu but it was pricey for lunch on weekday. Food and service were both good! Not sure I'll return very soon but was very happy with the meal. read more

Qi is an awesome vibe and really good for a large party if needed. Located in a cool part of downtown it is great spot if you are looking to go out afterwards. This latest trip I was with about 14 people for a birthday party and we sat close to the entrance at a long table which was relatively private and nice. The dumplings were delicious and flavorful but were really missing a ponzu or dipping sauce. My entree the honey beef was pretty good but I found myself underwhelmed with how much steak was included. The sauce was pretty sweet, verging on too sweet but overall yummy. I probably wouldn't order my entree again but it was still pretty good. Service was solid for such a large a party and multiple people in our group said the dumplings they got were some of the best they have had. Certainly want to give this place another shot in the future considering this. read more

Food was really good! Of all the different dishes we were able to try, the lobster dumplings, bokchoy and mushroom, and fried rice were my favorite! We stopped by for a bachelorette dinner. They were very nice and accommodating for our large party, we were able to sit upstairs in a private section. Despite being upstairs and distant from the crowd, they still provided great service. The restaurant itself is so beautifully decorated! Can't wait to come back. read more

A delicious spot for Chinese food! Out of the dim sum, my friends and I ordered the Qi Soup Dumplings and Roasted Duck Pancake. The soup dumplings tasted so authentic and came with a side of a chili/vinegar sauce that you could add to taste. The roasted duck pancake was even more yummy with its crispy yet soft and chewy texture. The duck itself was very flavorful as well. Of the soups, we ordered both the Hot and Sour Soup and Egg Drop Corn Soup. If you're a corn girl, you will LOVE the egg drop soup. It's light but packed with corn flavor and corn pieces. The hot and sour soup was my favorite of the two though. It was tangy and packed the right amount of spicy heat. For our main, we ordered both the Truffle Egg Fried Rice and Honey Akaushi Beef. You HAVE to order the truffle fried rice if you're dining here! It's got this umami flavor to it that was light yet savory at the same time. Debated on ordering a second bowl to take home! Overall, a very solid place for an upscale Chinese dining experience. read more

Yes! They have some pretty large tables. I would definitely call ahead of time and make a large party reservation because they won't do more than 6 people on OpenTable. Great for family style.
