In town visiting and decided to give Q39 my business and I was very pleased with almost everything. KJ was our server and he did a fantastic job of taking care of us. We started with the Jalapeño Cornbread with Honey Butter and it was really tasty with a nice blend of sweet and zest. I had the brisket and burnt ends for lunch with fries and baked beans and all of it was very very good. Flavor profile was very enjoyable. If there was negative about my experience it was the Bloody Mary that I ordered, garnishments were good , but flavor of the drink sucked. I would not order one of those again. Secondly although the bbq sauce was really good with meats, the flavor of it with fries was not impressive. It had a very didn't flavor off the meat than it did on it. So disappointing. I absolutely love the Q39 in KC and have been stoked to try the one in Lawrence as it is significantly closer to where I live. Had visitors in from NY and was excited to share some top end BBQ. I wish I had taken them to KC. The place was so loud and our server or servers (they couldn't decide who wanted to help us) it took 30 minutes before we got our drinks and another 15 for them to come back and take our order. Food was good but noticeably not on the level of the KC restaurants. One of my guests got the chicken and it was very dry. In all I was embarrassed as I talked yall up so much before we got there. Q39 is always a hit! This location is huge. Love the outside seating. It's perfect. The burnt ends are a must! They are the best burnt ends ever. Same with the wings. They claim to be the best wings on the planet, and honestly... they kinda are!!! I feel like Q39 never misses. Awesome bbq spot! Young waiter who was a chatty booiii but we didn't mind it Lolol. My husband and I have eaten here a couple of times, and it never disappoints! During our visits, I tried the steak and the turkey. I ordered the steak rare, and it was incredibly tender and juicy. The turkey was also packed with flavor and cooked perfectly. My husband ordered the brisket on our first visit and went with the three-meat plate the second time--he loved both and said everything was delicious. For sides, we've tried the French fries, the veggies, and the orzo salad. Every single one of them was excellent and full of flavor. The service here is top-notch. On our last visit, Peter took great care of us at the bar as both our bartender and server. We've also eaten at the inside bar before and received the same excellent service. The hostess, Ireland, gave us a warm welcome, and another server, Sera, was incredibly helpful with great menu recommendations. We had an outstanding experience at Q39 in Lawrence! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was warm, upscale, and welcoming. It's the kind of place that feels classy without being overly formal, making it perfect for a family dinner or a special night out. Our server, Lizzie, was absolutely fantastic. She was friendly, attentive, and gave excellent menu recommendations. She even kept our drinks topped off without us ever having to ask, which made the experience feel effortless. We were a party of six, and every meal was excellent. I ordered the 30-day aged ribeye, and it was cooked perfectly and absolutely delicious. The portions were so generous that I couldn't even finish my house salad or the cucumber salad. My partner ordered the three-meat platter with ribs, brisket, and sausage, and every bite was flavorful and cooked to perfection. Between the incredible food, generous portions, beautiful atmosphere, and exceptional service from Lizzie, this was easily one of the best BBQ restaurants we've visited. On Tuesday I made a reservation for Saturday at 7:15. We showed up 10 minutes early and they told us it would be 40 minutes. There seemed to be some empty tables, so we were hopeful we'd be seated soon. We were told we could get a drink at one of the two bars and they'd text us when our table was ready. We ordered a couple drinks at the outdoor bar, but were told we couldn't use the seats at the bar unless we were dining. The spicy margarita I ordered was not spicy at all. I saw one made in front of me that had a jalapeño and lime garnish. I got a small slice of lime. The drink was watered down and all I really tasted was the tajin on the rim. We both opted for beers for our second round. The selection was not good, one subpar IPA on the list and $8 a pop. After two rounds plus tip I spend nearly $50 and still hadn't eaten a thing. By 8 pm (45 minutes after our reservation) we were looking at a bunch of empty tables inside and out (see photos). There were lots of staff members, many of them standing around talking to each other. I went to the desk one more time and they said they still couldn't seat us. By the time we finally received a text that our table was ready, we had drinks and oysters on the table at Mass St. Fish House (who were also quite busy but found us a table at the bar). I'm glad q39 is in Lawrence, immediately, they are one of the best restaurants in town. Had lunch there today. Clearly, they have made a substantial investment and they did it right. The indoor seating is good, the vast outdoor seating looks great, look forward to enjoying the patio bar area. Lunch. Our entrees came out before the appetizer which always sucks. The waitress apologized and told us she would remove the appetizer from our bill. The bill came, it wasn't removed. Could have made an issue out of it, chose not too. No issue with the food, everything was q39 quality. Really hope they can make this work. Again, the investment that has been made is obvious. If q39 is successful, that means other restaurants town are going to close, the dining $$ pie is only so big. Everybody has to earn it in this town, no gimmes. I really wanted to be more enthusiastically supportive in this review, I get it, this is day 1 but , credit to them, they had plenty of staff, it wasn't crazy busy when we were there. I had lunch there with a girl friend last week, who has told me many great things about Q39. I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere, the cornbread, and the salmon salad. My friend was dissatisfied with her shrimp (she did not think it was cooked completely), but the server was very kind, attentive, and had a new plate out, quickly. A female manager (I am assuming, as I did not get a formal introduction) stopped by to see how we were enjoying everything, and my friend let her know about her shrimp. The lady said that they would not serve raw food and that everything is fresh from the smoker. My friend said she just wanted to let someone know, in order to prevent someone else experiencing the same, and the lady asked her if she had ever had smoked shrimp before, explaining that that might be why the texture was unfamiliar to her [my friend]. My friend said she thought the dish was grilled, as she has enjoyed it there before, and the lady told her that she, "might just need to order something different." As I said, my food was great and the restaurant was nice, but the experience with that lady rubbed me the wrong way. I would expect that if you are a manager that you care a bit more about your customers and their satisfaction. read more

First time in Lawrence.. Have dined at all the others. Waiter server was excellent. 6pm place filled up fast. The lack of any thought of acoustics in the giant open space was awful. All of the metal chairs are also awful. Next time I will sit on a cushioned bench seat if possible. Note I said next time that is a good thing for the restaurant! My fries were not the freshest /hottest but I am picky. I had the shrimp/bacon wrapped appetizer for my main course. They were fine but again not the hottest or freshest...again I am picky. Had the bread pudding for dessert very good and extra hot and fresh...but boarder line burnt. More fun ahead and impressed with all the investment in a Lawrence downtown restaurant. It's been a while since I had eaten at Q39. When I heard they'd opened a new one here in Lawrence I was excited because there wasn't really any good options for bbq in town that was more of a fun, sit down restaurant, open later. It's basic bbq. Burnt ends should melt in your mouth, not require a good amount of chewing and be reminiscent of a pot roast. The brisket was good. But considering the premium prices they are charging for what is 6 chewy pieces of burnt ends and 3 strips of brisket with a cup of cheesy corn and a small serving of fried....I'd just as soon as drive to Lenexa and go to Jack Stack. Biemers BBQ on 9th and Iowa is much better bbq and you actually get better value for what you spend. Also they crammed as many tables and chairs as they could into the space to the point where the couple dining next to us might as well have been sitting with us... maybe 12" between. So between the surrounding tables conversations bleeding into our own and the obnoxiously loud music and slow service, I give them a few months of hype because they are new and different but ultimately falling short of the grandeur they insist they bring to the table. I don't like leaving poor reviews but I was disappointed in my experience. read more

I don't write many reviews, but our experience today merited one. The entire waitstaff seemed to be instructed to give a big sales pitch. Our waiter was over the top in this regard, and inattentive to boot. He seemed put out that I didn't like burnt ends, as that was obviously something they had been trained to push. It's a restaurant, not a used car dealership. Nowhere on the menu could I just order something a la carte - I asked if I could just get one serving of brisket and maybe one side rather than the pick two plate and was told it wasn't even an off-menu option - I'd have to order two servings of brisket and the full plate - I ordered a sandwich instead. Leaving there was not enough space between tables to get out of the booth, and even getting out of the restaurant was an ordeal - I had to turn sideways to get down any supposed "aisle" to the door. Food was okay, but not any better than Biggs or Biemers, and certainly more expensive. Definitely would not recommend. read more

I had a really great experience at Q39 in Lawrence. The service was fantastic from the moment we walked in, and the food definitely lived up to the reputation. My girlfriend and I both ordered the pulled pork sandwich, with coleslaw on the side, plus fries and beans. Everything was excellent. The pork was tender and flavorful, the sides were solid, and the portions were just right. The only downside was the drink prices. Any domestic beer was $7 (12oz Coors light) and cocktails were north of $13, which felt pretty absurd considering it ended up costing more than the food itself. For a casual barbecue spot, that pricing seemed a little excessive. Overall though, the food and service were great and I'd definitely come back, I'd just probably stick with water next time. read more

What I got was 4 small pieces of burnt ends and almost 3 thinly sliced pieces of dry brisket. The only reason they got 2 stars was for the exceptional service I received from their staff.
