If you are looking this place up on Yelp to see what it's like at the Hawk, this place is already not for you. It is dirty, sticky, crowded, loud, and gross. Once you turn 21 you're already too old for this bar and you've already put too much thought into your plans to go here. Every college town has to have one of these. Some graduates may look back and remember some fond memories they have at the Hawk. All stories which usually end badly (police involvement, terrible hangovers, fights, that one terrible one night stand... you get the picture). The bar has several rooms and as the night goes on and the rooms fill up, more rooms open. Absolutely nothing special about the drinks. This place is not for enjoying the drinks or nice ambiance. This place is about getting as many kids as drunk as possible as fast as possible. If that's what you're looking for then this is the place for you. There are much nicer bars just around the corner. Met a door guy named Riley and he was so caring and hot. Took my ID and scanned it like no one else has ever, once returning the ID I was greeted with the warmest smile I have ever seen. Been going to this bar since my freshman year at KU. Kinda expensive, but you are there for the environment. There are 4 different rooms in this establishment, the best being the Boom Boom room. I wouldn't go here sober, would actually recommend pre-gaming pretty hard. On Friday afternoons they have free beer Friday, which is a kill the keg instance which is an amazing time, with free hamburgers and chips provided by the Hawk. 5/5. read more

Wow what an experience I had at the Jayhawk Cafe. Thought this was an ordinary cafe in which coffee and food was served but boy was I wrong. I walked into the Jayhawk Cafe to the booming noise of 21 Savage blasting in my ear and a plethora of 19 year olds in Vineyard Vines shirts and girls in leopard dresses. I figured, fuck it, I'll stay and get a few drinks. I made my way down to the "Boom Boom Room" and my night quickly picked up. I met a fratter named Jacob who offered me some of the best cocaine I've ever snorted in my life, and met a beautiful girl named Natasha who danced on me until I came in my pants. LITERALLY. If you are from out of town watching your favorite football team beat up on the Jayhawks, you may be tempted to make a trip to this bar located down the street from Memorial Stadium. Heed this local Lawrence man's warning; this place is a total piece of crap. Every square inch of this bar is sticky from spilled drinks and vomit. Expect to wait in very long lines for watered down drinks. You might even catch a glimpse of people having sex in the "boom boom" room downstairs, like what happens every Halloween. You won't be able to move around very freely as it is always overpacked with drunk freshman. Which brings me to my next point: "The hawk" is a notorious underage bar. You will be surrounded by dumb little kids who have no idea how to drink like normal people. They are all amateurs and they all all very annoying. It makes me shudder to think of how many out of town fans were exposed to this place, and the impression it put on them. Yes, the crowd tends to be on the younger side but the Hawk's many rooms provide for very different experiences. I'll put it this way, I will never come into contact with another bar as good as the hawk. First off, the service was better than terrific. I have never seen a more hardworking staff. Next, The drinks there were so tasty that I was in complete disbelief in how good they actually were. And last, the DJ's were playing the best playlists I have ever heard. The Hawk is a gameday tradition. This bar is always a staple when making a return to Lawrence. They offer dollar night on Wednesdays which for broke college kids is always good. The place is huge with 5 different bars. If you are a college student and don't mind frat guys roaming around this is a place worth going. If you have already graduated then you know when you come back for gamedays the hawk is one stop you have to make. read more
