And what do I see on my way to work, but an adorable little store front advertising HONEY! Punch Honeybee has a store right by my house! Of course I must go inside.... see what the buzz is about! Wow. So inside it smells like a version of heaven. There's bee wax products around the room, and a wall with the latest local honeys in jars. The coolest part about Punch Honeybee is that this honey comes from relocated bee hives. Bee colonies that decided someone's chimney was a nice place to settle needed to be removed. And instead of fumigating, Punch Honey moves them to one of several locations and collects their honey. While I was there they had Sonoran Desert, Citrus and High Pollen Honey. They all taste different and they are all delicious. I had to buy all three of course - couldn't pick just one. Or two... There's also a list on the wall where you can sign up to have a bee colony set up in your yard. How cool! I hate writing a bad review. I really do. But I wish I would have read something similar to what I'm about to write before I went ahead and tried to use Punch Honeybee Company. At the time, there was only 1 review, and it was 5 stars. I was looking for experienced and humane bee removal, and Dan had all the credentials with his Arizona State University association, etc. etc. Unfortunately, Dan's credentials don't translate into a good business experience. Maybe he is good for wealthy retired people? He certainly was not good for me. I began on a Monday morning around 9am. I left a message. By Tuesday morning I still hadn't heard back, I called again and he answered, I could hear bees flying in the background he said he was busy and would call me back. He didn't. The next day I called and texted. Hours later I got a text, said he would go and give me an estimate and email me. Thursday- nothing. Friday, more calls, texts, nothing. Saturday 9pm I get a text that he's almost done with the estimate. Sunday night I get it. $3800. What! It seems Dan wants to build a scaffold, pay himself $150/hour for 9 hours, and remodel the home. I'm a little upset that I've waited almost 1 week for this estimate. Why 2 stars and not 1 star? Like I said, I hate writing a bad review, and the estimate was rather pretty with lots of pictures and arrows, etc. So 2 stars. But you aren't getting the job Dan. I called another bee company this morning at 11am, by 1pm they were on site and by 3pm they were done with the job- for $165. They will return to make repairs for $900. I have saved $3000 and 1 week of phone tag with the other company. Dan, you might be an ASU professor, heck you might even be the best bee guy on the planet, but you don't know how to be prompt, or communicate with potential customers in a timely fashion. So like I said, Dan might be good for millionaires who are retired and have all the time in the world, but I'm a busy guy and not a millionaire and so if you dear reader are anything at all like me then you better look elsewhere. Ever read a review that was so glowing in praise that you swear it must have been written by the guy's mother? I'm going to try very hard not to make mine sound that way, but no promises other than that I promise I am not related to him and have nothing at stake here. They didn't offer me a deal, freebie or even a discount if I would write a review; I'm doing this all on my own after-the-fact. That being said, my overall impression of bee removal companies in the Phoenix area is right down there with roofers, painters and window salesmen ... which is about as low as it can get. I started getting bees congregating under my roofline almost a year ago and since they weren't bothering me I left them alone. Over time their colony grew and still I didn't feel I had to do anything about them. That is until just recently when a new neighbor moved in who is allergic to bees and the colony started getting REALLY large and was having an impact on my outdoor life and ability to do fixup projects around the house. I don't see any reason to kill bees and after educating myself a little about them I learned that the bee population is dwindling and beekeepers have an urgent need for bees. So I called a few "experts", the ones with the big ads. I could see the dollar signs spinning in their eyes. Here I was trying to help them by donating my bees and even willing to pay them for their time and I got the full load of BS about how "urgent" it was and they would be there at 4:00 AM for an emergency call and yadda, yadda, yadda. Of course I needed the "guarantee" that would only cost me $89 a month for them to keep the bees away in the future (which is a total crock; if they are removed properly bees won't come back to the site of their former hive). I could buy a new car for what they wanted to charge me. I ended up running across a website called Bees-on-the-Net which is not a sales site but rather a personal project of some guy whose site has a ton of useful information about bees. He has a list of like-minded beekeepers and shares their bios and of all of them I liked the way Dan Punch's read ... no hype, no scare tactics, it sounded like the guy knew what he was doing. So I called him. My gut feeling turned out to be right. He swung by one day after a removal job and (here is where it gets night vs. day compared to the other companies I called) he got up on my roof, took thermal images, listened to the bees and gave me an evaluation that I believed. Note that every other company was throwing quotes at me without even coming to my home or just eyeballing it from ground level. Dan made an appointment for two days later and showed up on time with an associate. He erected a full scaffolding rig for their safety (and my liability and protection of my property) and went to work. It took him a full 5 hours to do the job for which he had given me a written estimate. Even though there was some extra time involved he stuck to his estimate to the penny. Having a family member in the construction industry I know that Dan went WAY above and beyond just sucking the bees out and patching the hole (see the attached photos). After he was done, the bees were gone and my house looked like it had never been touched. I watched the two of them from my window a few times and they were absolutely meticulous about not doing any damage to the house, putting "caution" tape up to warn the neighbors, and cleaning up afterwards ... even moving my neighbor's trash can from the middle of his driveway where the trash collection guy had left it. A quick note about the only negative review. I don't doubt what you say is true, service people who don't return phone calls have a special place in hell as far as I'm concerned. Never calling back gets that company instantly deleted from my list and my negative experience shared with everyone I know. But a late returned call? I have to give the company the benefit of the doubt and believe there could be a reason. My experience with Dan Punch was quite the opposite ... he called, he emailed and he texted all within a reasonable time AND he sent the most professional after-job wrap-up I've ever seen, complete with the photos I am posting here. I hated to do it but I emailed him on the following Saturday night because a huge swarm of bees was gathering at the same spot I had the problem. Dan came out the next morning, a Sunday, on his own time and at no charge and took care of the problem. I'm not a millionaire either but I'm sure of one thing ... Dan is a very hard worker and exceptionally professional. If you're a homeowner or business owner you know the frustrations of hiring someone and finding out too late after they've done a bad job so I hope my review of this company has been helpful to you. The Good: This company did a great job removing the bees. They were professional, thorough, humane, and did a great job patching up afterwards. The Bad: Horrible customer service. We had a pretty bad bee problem with two hives in our wall near our front door. The company (twice) told us they were coming on a certain date and did not show up (and did not tell us ahead of time). They would also fail to return phone calls or text messages. It took 3 weeks between the the first consultation and the time they actually came and removed the hives. I was at my wits end and I told my husband that if they didn't respond, we were finding someone else to remove the bees. We were having bees come inside through our vents and flying around our bathroom. They also quoted us a price and told us they would "eat the cost" above that - it came in almost $400 higher than they told us. They did end up knocking $350 off. All-in-all, if you can get them to come out and do the work, they do a great job. The key is getting them out there. Poor management. read more

These guys answered the phone right away and were here in less than an 30 min. I know nothing about Bees except the time I was 10 years old a sworn of Africans Bees chased me and I had to run for my life. Dan did a great job removing a hive from a block pillar in our yard. Not only were 99% of the bees permanently removed, but he also filled the interior of the pillar with concrete and replaced its cap so that it couldn't be used as a hive location in the future. Dan arrived on time for a quote on our bee problem. We had them in 2 places. He immediately noticed that they were Mason Bees not honeybees. (a company that came by before for a quote but we decided to get another opinion was already coming out tonight to tear down some sheet rock and remove the hive and any honeycomb.) When Dan can out he we very friendly. I'm recommended to all my friends NOT to use Punch Honeybee Company, LLC. LLC.with Dan Punch. On March 24, 2015 Dan came out and checked out our bee problem. He said his consultations are FREE! And it was FREE....After checking it out he asked us if we wanted him to come back and remove the old honeycomb and patch up the roof for us at his hourly rate. And we said, "Please do". He said he would call us back on Thursday 26th or Friday 27th of March. We did not hear back from him. We called him that Saturday and left him a message. Punch was referral from the Ahwatukee 411 Facebook group. We have a two story home in the Ahwatukee. We noticed we had bees in the house and dead bees in the front of our home. We also saw a lot of bees hovering around our sprinkler heads after they had recently run. We went out and got several quotes. Punch was not the cheapest bid we received but the referrals were too good to ignore. They came out and gave us an estimate and then we scheduled a time they could return. They showed up on time. The hive was in our roof. They removed the roof material, extracted the bees and hive and repaired the roof to like new condition. They left the work site very clean. Dan came in after and explained what they did and provided pictures. Dan was professional and personable. They came in under estimate and I felt I received exceptional service. After researching a number of bee companies and being told the only option was extermination, someone recommended Punch Honeybees. Even though our hive was extensive (six feet tall!) and took hours to remove, Dan and his assistant stayed in their price quote (which was, incidentally, about half what I was quoted for extermination and removal). They removed about 20,000 bees for relocation to an apiary and even gave us some of the honeycomb. After spending $700 to have bees removed, I expected more. I cannot recommend these guys. they are too expensive and they did not finish the repair they promised to my wall.
