Had the opportunity to try Puddin' at work. I'm from a pretty southern hometown and miss the food so I thought I'd give them a try. I am a huge fan of fried oysters so I got that + slaw. I'm not sure if it comes with slaw, because I got 2 slaws. The slaw was pretty good, but the oysters were a little disappointing since I got an oyster full of shell fragments. Luckily, still have all of my teeth intact. They were also pretty chewy, which isn't a huge deal. But in all honesty, I've never had shells in my oysters like this before. You can't see the shells from the outside so it was quite a surprise. Everything else is pretty good. Next time I'd probably try the shrimp and grits. The bread pudding was so good! My only issue was with the strong alcohol taste at the end. Not bourbon flavor, actual alcohol taste. I don't drink so I was coughing quite a bit. Haha! I think someone mentioned this in another review so if you don't drink, just be aware there may be an alcohol taste. It was very runny at the bottom of the cup. This is my first experience with Cajun/Creole cousine in Washington, District of Columbia. There were five (5) people in line ahead of me and it was about a 10 minute wait to order. The person working at counter was friendly and explained all the items are the same price since a small was $7, a medium $11, and large $20. I ordered a medium étouffée with shrimp instead of crawfish. The shrimp was cooked just right and the flavors were all there, but there were only three shrimp for the medium, the same amount a friend got for the small size. So for $4 more, you just get more rice. I suggest getting the small over the medium. Another friend got a small shrimp 'n grits with three shrimp and another friend got a medium chicken sausage gumbo. The gumbo is the best bang for the buck. I also got a small Puddin's original brown butter bourbon bread puddin'. The website describes it as "Bread, Butter, Bourbon, Delicious!", but it was not delicious. The "puddin'" was dry with only a hint of bourbon. I recommend passing on this dessert and go somewhere else in the market for desert. Total rip off for $7, but deserts are the highest margin items at restaurants next to drinks. We went around 7pm and seats were hard to find for a group of 6. read more

Bread pudding is good, food is not. At the price point they sit at you can do waaaaaaaay better without looking far. I've ordered from them on two separate occasions. I got the shrimp and grits and the gumbo and both basically taste like a can of stewed tomatoes with no other seasonings or flavor with a few flavorless tail on steamed shrimp tossed on top. A couple months ago, my friend and I went to try to the deal with the entree and two sides. As long-time Puddin fans, we finally managed to eat everything on the menu. We were stuffed and delighted, reveling in how heavenly bread pudding can be. Every dish and side is wonderfully done, though our standouts are the etouffe and the shrimp and grits. However as soon as I took the first bite of that sample it all changed. I looked over at my mother who I had invited to come with me to union market, and all I could manage to say was "Well damn". And she's looking back at me like "yea, i know". So we went and got a table, and i came back to order my shrimp and grits. Now standing in a line behind an older couple. I see the lady scooping something into a container that looked amazing and smelled ridiculously good. It is at that time I look over at the sign on the counter and read "Brown Butter, Bourbon, Bread Pudding". I had to read it again but slower. Brown... Butter... Bourbon... Bread... Pudding. #MindBlown. Yes I'll be having that also! Funny thing is a couple walked up behind me looked at the menu and were like: Brown...Butter...Bourbon...Bread Pudding? I looked at them like yea, I just saw that too. They were equally amazed, and decided to walk around for a while, but were definitely sold on coming back. I got my food, went to my table and grubbed out. $6.00 for my small order which was still a decent portion. However they do have $8.00, and 10.00 containers also. I highly recommend this place. I'm not a huge shrimp n'grits fan but their version of it is so rich and buttery - you cannot stop eating it until the whole bowl is empty. The shrimp is just right - not over cooked and rubbery or undercooked, but just plump and right each time I have ordered this. The staff is always nice. The only time I've caught up with them is at the HHS Farmers Market on Wednesdays for lunch. The most popular and most delicious attraction to the Puddin stand is the Shrimp Po Boy. Large, lightly breaded nicely seasoned fried shrimp in a freshly baked roll. It's topped with cole slaw (usually vinegar-based) and their remoulade (which can get salty so have them throw it down to your liking!). A shorty Shrimp Po Boy isn't enough food to fill me up even for lunch. I tried the Shrimp Grits and while it had some good flavor, I found myself looking for more spice and the grits were chunky in some spots. Also they have scallions and hot sauce on their side table that you can add if you want. Do not pass over the Po Boys! The size and quality of shrimp is sure to please! read more

So I saw this truck in my area and I immediately ran out because...BREAD PUDDING. I was originally going to get shrimp and grits, but I saw etouffee was on the menu. Look dudes, I love me some etouffee, so I got a medium shrimp ($9. Also, crawfish is available if that's your speed). I would have scored this a perfect 5 stars if the rice had been cooked right. I got a cup to heat up at home (which they recommended in the oven/toaster oven, I did ~12 min @350) and didn't even get to eat it until the next evening and it was STILL delicious. Unfortunately the etouffee was like a watery simulacrum of a real etouffee, with pieces of what looked like minute rice floating around in water. Give it 4 stars for flavor. Ultimately although the flavor was close the execution really needs work. More than anything my complaint is both serving size for cost and packaging. It looks like 16 oz wax paper cup with lid.
