As a newly minted office worker, I have found that lunch time is now my favorite part of the day! It was a sunny Thursday afternoon and my co-worker and I were jonesin' for something delicious. We walked from food truck to food truck searching for the best bite to eat and Yelp (and my previous visit for bread pudding!) led us to Puddin'. While we were waiting to order a Puddin' fangirl outside the truck excitedly led us through the menu while telling us her favorite picks. Based on her recommendations, I decided to go for the Oyster Po' Boy (on special that week!) and of course I could not say no to their signature bread pudding. A Po Boy Shorty + Zapps signature chips was the best decision I made that entire week. The oysters were perfectly crisp and the coleslaw tangy and tart. I skipped the remoulade which I am sure would have added some extra flavor expolosion but I think anything mayo based is the devil so.... Bread Pudding is ON POINT. I had it several years ago and it was just as good in 2018. It's rich and buttery and the brown sugar envelops every little bite. I came across this restaurant while touring the Union Market in D.C. this past weekend. As none of the other restaurants really peaked my interest at the time, Puddin' did because they had shrimp and grits which I love! My friend and I ordered my shrimp and grits meal and went upstairs to the rooftop. The dish looks a little messy because we took the stairs . We sat down and cracked open the lids to our meals and my food was very well heated (loved this) and was plentiful as you can see from the picture. It was filled to the very top, so you definitely get your money's worth. Additionally, the food was very well seasoned and the shrimp were, what I would call, large. They were bigger than the shrimp that you would get your common chained seafood/Italian restaurants (i.e. - Red Lobster, Olive Garden, etc.) depending on your order. I decided to give Puddin' four stars because they did not accept cash and I was not too interested in using my card. Additionally, the shrimp still had the tails on it so I had to use my fingers to pull the tails off (I am not a fan of picking through my food unless it is meant to be picked such as fried shrimp...but that is just me). Walking around Union Market, we came across Puddin. Noticed that they had bread pudding and decided to order some for mom. Employees were sweet and helpful. Our order was wrapped up and ready to go in no time. I can't really comment on any of their other menu items, but I was able to taste a bit of the bread pudding we got for mom and it was delicious! This is a new truck in our neighborhood so although I wasn't sure about the food decided to try it anyway. Must be because it's "divine comfort food" it seems to be super popular. They were just a bit slow in starting the ordering process so by 5 a line already formed. We tried the shrimp and grits, chicken and beef sausage gumbo. Both were good with rich flavors, the spicy beef sausage was particularly tasty. For the shrimp dish you get 5 large shrimps and a lot grits, the gumbo comes with rice which is very undercooked and hard - I had to zap it for 5 minutes in the microwave to get it softer, so if you're eating right out of the container it might be a problem. For some reason there was no pre-ordering online (even though the website seems to have that capability) so orders are taken on the spot with credit card payment. read more

The etouffee and the gumbo were pretty salty on their own, but they had a great amount of flavor and spiciness. The brown butter Bourbon bread pudding is probably the best bread pudding I've ever had. The bread was perfectly caramelized, not too sweet and no detectable alcohol flavor. So good! I bought a large gumbo and medium bread pudding. I was able to eat the gumbo for three meals and shared the bread pudding with my sister. Eating the gumbo with the rice balanced out the salty taste. First of all it was actually hot, unlike the S&G that was room temperature (borderline cold) we didn't bother to eat it at the market we just saved it to warm up at home. Once we got it home and warmed it up it was good, the (yummy & cheesy) grits were better than the shrimp & sauce. The shrimp lacked flavor, they just taste like steam shrimp, they would benefit from actually being cooked in the sauce. Instead of just sauce being pour on them. But the Gumbo had just enough spice and that flavor of slow cooked all day. The veggies were fresh and it was hearty. Had the opportunity to try Puddin' at work. I'm from a pretty southern hometown and miss the food so I thought I'd give them a try. I am a huge fan of fried oysters so I got that + slaw. I'm not sure if it comes with slaw, because I got 2 slaws. The slaw was pretty good, but the oysters were a little disappointing since I got an oyster full of shell fragments. Luckily, still have all of my teeth intact. They were also pretty chewy, which isn't a huge deal. But in all honesty, I've never had shells in my oysters like this before. You can't see the shells from the outside so it was quite a surprise. Everything else is pretty good. Next time I'd probably try the shrimp and grits. The bread pudding was so good! My only issue was with the strong alcohol taste at the end. Not bourbon flavor, actual alcohol taste. I don't drink so I was coughing quite a bit. Haha! I think someone mentioned this in another review so if you don't drink, just be aware there may be an alcohol taste. It was very runny at the bottom of the cup. This is my first experience with Cajun/Creole cousine in Washington, District of Columbia. There were five (5) people in line ahead of me and it was about a 10 minute wait to order. The person working at counter was friendly and explained all the items are the same price since a small was $7, a medium $11, and large $20. I ordered a medium étouffée with shrimp instead of crawfish. The shrimp was cooked just right and the flavors were all there, but there were only three shrimp for the medium, the same amount a friend got for the small size. So for $4 more, you just get more rice. I suggest getting the small over the medium. Another friend got a small shrimp 'n grits with three shrimp and another friend got a medium chicken sausage gumbo. The gumbo is the best bang for the buck. I also got a small Puddin's original brown butter bourbon bread puddin'. The website describes it as "Bread, Butter, Bourbon, Delicious!", but it was not delicious. The "puddin'" was dry with only a hint of bourbon. I recommend passing on this dessert and go somewhere else in the market for desert. Total rip off for $7, but deserts are the highest margin items at restaurants next to drinks. We went around 7pm and seats were hard to find for a group of 6. read more
