There are elevators on site and carts to move your items in and out of the units with ease. I recommend purchasing a lock on site. It is easier with this lock than a normal padlock. There are four sizes of the rooms. The largest is a large 10x15. I find getting the largest unit was better and few dollars more for the unit value. The next is 10x10. They have two smaller units. When you select a unit, be to remember your access code. You are going to need it to where the units are and to ride the elevators. Be sure to return any cats you use, it's a good sign of proper use in a storage facility. The two top mangers Paula and Howard are super nice along with the rest of the staff. You have a three day grace period to pay your dues before a late charge is applied. To prevent late charges, they accept auto pay. The units are open 9:00am to 9:00 pm Monday -Sunday. The staff is on duty from 9am-6pm. Be sure to be out by 9:00 or you will get locked in. They also have boxes and pack stuff in the office.

There has been a known rodent problem since September that management has failed to properly address or communicate to tenants. Several of my belongings were damaged, and others exposed to mice excrement as pictured. The only response from management has been to place glue traps, which do nothing to resolve the larger issue. When I requested to move units because of the infestation, I was initially offered a new one at a higher rate, which I found shocking and poor customer service, and then moved to another unit on the same floor--only to find that one quickly infested as well. Despite acknowledging the rodent issue, management offered no meaningful assistance or compensation beyond insurance that didn't cover the extent of the damage. This experience was extremely disappointing. Avoid storing your items here, and if you are currently stored on the 3rd floor, I would strongly suggest checking your items for signs of rodents.

I have many of my vinyl records there, which is why I needed air conditioned storage. I noticed back in April when I started using the unit frequently it was warm. As we got toward summer it got warmer of course. At some point in June I needed access in the middle of the day, but my code wasn't working and a staffer had to manually let me in. I then noticed key access to the south door (closest to my unit) fried. I drove back around the building and went to the office to report the maintenance problem, but it was closed for "lunch" at three in the afternoon. I returned today to get some luggage, and noticed I was sweating profusely inside and realized it was at least 97 degrees and I was drenching in sweat. This alarmed me, because vinyl records warp in heat about 80 degrees or higher. I have to leave for a funeral, so I was going to stop by the office and, again, they were closed. I didn't dare take out my records to look . . . . I called this location when I got home, but no one answered the phone. So, I called the national office and was told they can certainly get someone on the line, and shortly I was speaking to the manager (or interim one it seemed?). After I calmed down a bit we did have a nice discussion; he reported he has newly taken over managing the facility and they have been working on these issues. One possibility is I can get a different unit with AC, but I would have to move myself myself, which I cannot do because I am traveling tomorrow for a few days, and I have a broken rib that will take 6-12 weeks to heal. In any event, the manager dropped my rent as recompense, which is nice to do. The door will be repaired soon, I was told, but the A/C issues is a different story. I surmised this has been a problem for months--getting whomever owns this franchise to properly maintain their buildings which, it seems, they no longer do. When I return from my funeral trip, I'll pop some Xanax and sheepishly peep at my vinyl with spot checks for warping. I am in the process of moving back into my home and it will take me some time to play these records in search of warping. Finally, I noticed when I started using the unit again the floor was full of dead roaches and crickets. Also not a good sign of responsible upkeep. Perhaps this was a blip of bad luck? Except that has been quite a months-long blip. And if you have precious items that cannot tolerate heat--you know, the very reason you pay extra for an air conditioned unit. When I think I have the strength to endure it, I'll update this review with any photos of damage I find. Hard to photograph "heat," as it were. And a dead access box looks just like you think it does: an old telephone booth phone without the booth or phone. These are my facts. My intention with this review is to inform you of things I've learned from using Security Self Storage on S. Lamar. 1. I chose this particular facility because the location was convenient for me and the rates were lower than an indoor climate-controlled storage unit. **What I've learned is that outdoor storage units are more open and accessible to vermin and mold. This means your items can be chewed on and scratched up by critters (rats can file down their teeth by chewing on the corners of pieces of wood, like your furniture!). 2. This storage facility requires you to buy your first month of insurance from Xercor (Old Republic Insurance Company), which is self storage tenant insurance. The premium is $10 per month. After the 1st month of using Xercor, you have the option to switch to any personal insurance you may have. **Xercor is there to give you a false sense of security for your belongings. If you file a claim, don't count on them doing anything except giving you the runaround and requiring lots of repeated work from you. It took me months to get through their process and had to send my claim (paperwork & photos) 3x before they could even find them (I eventually had to send my paperwork by "snail-mail" & suggest they check their spam folder for my photos -- which they eventually found) only to tell me that "the burden of proof has not been met". I was also told I did not follow the appropriate step of contacting the facility manager first -- which is not true. It's the 1st thing I did (I pulled up my cell phone record to show the exact date & time). I had spoke with the assistant manager, who told me to contact Xercor. Both Xercor & the facility manager (who I was able to speak with once she was back from vacation) used that infamous non-sequitur reasoning of "well, no one else has reported that". So I guess that means I'm lying? Not everyone is willing to or has the time for this level of hassle. Unfortunately, there's not much a consumer can do except for filing a complaint and a review. 3. Spend the extra money for an INDOOR facility (NOT AN OUTDOOR) - SERIOUSLY!!! I know moving/storage can be costly, but we had thousands of dollars worth of items negatively impacted. Even if Xercor had approved my claim, the coverage is up to $400 (after a $100 deductible). Here's what Xercor's marketing team came up with for their brochure: "Peace of Mind - It is convenient. Your belongings are covered the moment you elect coverage and pay your premium." Such a joke!!
