I am 8 months pregnant and my husband and are both General Managers at restaurants in Manhattan. Due to our busy schedules we rarely get any time together but last night had a rare opportunity to go out for dinner on a Friday night. We wanted to go to Provini but since it was already 10pm, looked online first to make sure they were not closing soon. (Again, we manage restaurants and understand how frustrating a late table can be when you are about to close.) Their closing time online is posted as 12 midnight on Friday and Saturday, giving us 2 hours, so we decided to go.
We arrived there around 10:30 and there were a few other tables. Our server was very nice and we ordered our meal. Shortly after 11:00 we were halfway through our meal and the other tables were just leaving, making us the only table in the restaurant. At this point, a man came out of the kitchen and starting talking/yelling so loudly with the staff that I could barely hear what my husband was saying. He was speaking in Italian with a mix of profanities in English. I speak Italian so he could have just said those in the same language if he would have liked. He continued on like this for the next 20 minutes. I get it, he was trying to be annoying to make us leave. Somewhere in the midst of his blabbering, the server or kitchen seemed to have forgotten to fire our last course so it took quite a while to come out. It finally arrived and my husband ordered a glass of wine to go with his meal. The server said okay, but 5 minutes later still no glass of wine but we decided to just let it go. The loud man had gone outside at some point to talk on the phone but then came back in, giving me a nasty look as he walked by.
So, we finished our last course, which I only took a couple of bites of having lost my appetite. I stacked our plates up quickly with our silverware and napkins, hoping to expedite the process of getting us out of there for our server. She asked if we would like dessert and I told her I would be afraid of getting slapped in the face if we dared. We spent $100 dollars, tipped 20% and left.
We have been here quite a few times over the last couple of years. The food is great, it always is. Sometimes we have had great service, sometimes mediocre. Everytime we go it seems to get a little worse. Our server last night started off great but I believe was influenced by the rude, loud man to pressure us out. We would not have stayed any longer than it would have taken us to finish our meal. We are not those people.
The worst part is, I think that loud, obnoxious man is a manager, chef or owner. He is the one teaching his staff to treat guests that way, and it is a shame. I have been working in restaurants for 16 years and I would never treat a guest at my restaurant as we were treated last night. I also travel to Italy at least once a year and never have been treated that way. And to the loud, obnoxious man: If you think that working until midnight on a Friday night in the restaurant industry is late, you are in the wrong business. Thank you for ruining a pregnant lady's first dinner out with her husband in 3 months. read more
