prosecco was delicious, but it might not be my kind of place.
explain yourself, pretty lady, you say? well, prosecco is a fancy place -- decorated in cool, ivory fabrics and a cream overall palette, the restaurant evokes class. it drips a sort of luxury that took some money and years to accumulate. the restaurant is not really hip, and frankly m'dear, it doesn't really give a damn.
we start off the meal with some classic french bread and caponata. fair starter. i wasn't wowed and stopped eating to save room for better courses. each meal at prosecco starts off with a complimentary pour of their house prosecco -- kudos for knowing just when to give something away for free! but just a taste wouldn't do -- we ordered a bottle of prosecco for the table as well.
next up were appetizers. regarding the ones i tried, go for the carpaccio di manzo, a burrata and peaches special, the crab cake risotto cakes, and then the avocado lobster salad. the first two were the best; i've had burrata, but this was so fresh, so creamy, so lovely. i would skip the avocado salad next time: tiny pieces of lobster, and no more delicious than a ripe avocado you can slice open at home.
for my entree, i chose the diver scallops, with spinach, shiitake, tomato, and vanilla Prosecco DOC reduction. order this if you're looking for a light portion. after all the prosecco and bread and appetizers, i wasn't famished -- and this was just the right amount of food. however, i would have appreciated some grain, something carby/starchy to soak up the delicious sweet reduction. scallops are naturally sweet, and might i suggest that this dish would benefit from a dash of savory to really balance the flavors? a small interjection of crisp, salty flavor might have rounded the dish out perfectly. hint -- bacon!
i sampled dishes all around. the pasta was really fantastic -- cooked perfectly al dente, with such a satisfying bite to each taste. i was really tempted to order the orecchiette tartufate (Fresh disc-shaped pasta, wild mushroom, artichoke heart, sun-dried tomato, black truffle cream, shaved Grana Padano, white truffle oil) -- but i had several bites off a generous friend's plate and was quite satisfied. the flavor was extremely rich and might have been too much by itself.
a few mishaps at dinner: first, a table across from our secluded room collapsed. wine flew all over, waiters fell down the stairs backwards, food was flung every which way. in their defense, the restaurant's reaction was commendable. the wait staff was to their feet immediately, and i heard tinkling laughs again before i knew it.
however, this meant that the wait staff was on their feet getting cleaning materials. this also meant that my party realized that our once secluded private enclave was actually...a hidden mop closet. in between bites, servers squeezed behind our chairs every few minutes to grab mops, brooms, etc. necessary, yes -- but still ruined the magic a bit.
lastly, just a few misses in terms of service. when asked for some fresh grated parmesan cheese, we were told that the powdered stuff was free, but we may have to be charged for the grated. absurd! no one let our table know that the orrecchiette tartufate was going to come out in penne form (the restaurant ran out of orrecchiette). there's a reason why pasta shapes differ -- changes the texture of the dish, absorbs and complements sauces differently. yes, it was still delicious, but a heads up or an apology may have been worthwhile.
overall, thumbs up for the food. but maybe a bit more attention to detail and service to match the food? read more
