--SAVORY-- Around $5 AHHH I'm obsessed with their savory pies. The individual pies are the perfect amount to get you full. The crust on their savory pies are perfection. Super flaky and light, the crunchy exterior holds the fillings so well. Thai curry chicken pie is a great savory one! The broccoli+cheddar and lamb pies are other tasty ones. The fillings for their meat pies are on the runnier side but I enjoy them that way. One item that my boyfriend and I didn't enjoy at all was the bacon, potato, and cheese pastry. It was just potato, wasn't flavorful, and very dry. --SWEET-- Around $4-5 The crust on their sweet pies don't really wow me as much as their savory ones, but most of them are really yummy as well. Their pecan pie has been my favorite so far [and I usually don't like pecans in general]. It is on the sweeter side but I really like the texture of the filling. It just melts in your mouth! Their lemon meringue is also wonderful and not overly tart. Their shoofly pie, which is a molasses based pie, was really dense and its texture reminded me almost of a hardy bread that has been soaked in syrup. It was one of the more interesting pies that I've tried, but I enjoyed it. There were several pies that just didn't quite work for me. The apple cheddar didn't work for me because the cheese didn't have enough sharpness to be noticed and the little flakes of cheese just had a weird mouth texture. The pear almond tart also had too strong of a marzipan flavor for me. --SERVICE-- First time I came here, I wasn't very impressed my their servers. Since they have so many items on the board, I naturally asked for a suggestion from the girl behind the counter. I got the "Everything is good" reply and I even asked her what were some customer faves were and she just told me all of them were popular and that they change up their flavors all the time. There was a huge line behind me so I just hurriedly ordered and got the apple cheddar pie which I ended up not enjoying. Thank goodness I got other items or I might not have returned! They weren't kidding when they said that this was one of the top dessert places in VA! We stopped by before our flight home and it was the perfect place to grab both a savory and sweet pie to-go! Kind and pleasant experience with the staff, the Blandchard cold brew was a nice and robust beverage to pair with the pies. We got the mango coconut custard (it's their most popular), and it was one of the best fruity custard pies we've ever had... mmmmmm.. chunks of mango and coconut. A recent trip took us to Richmond so of course we had to stop in and try some pie. The place is small, with very few seats and even mid-afternoon we couldn't all sit down. The Chocolate Raspberry Cream pie was very good - cold and creamy, full of flavor. The Mango Coconut would have been better chilled but the crust was good. None of us liked the Blueberry Apple pie. The pie was not bad, we just didn't care for the combination of flavors (cinnamon with blueberry and apple? - just didn't work for me). Finding a good pie is tough but this was worth the visit. We had the Thai Chicken Curry and the Pulled Pork Apple savory pies. They were both very good. I still favor the Thai Curry though. This was the second time I've had it (We got the last one they had!!). The first time was while I was on the Church Hill Food Tour with River City Food Tours. My friend among other people I know love it here. I can see why. They offer a vast selection of sweet and savory pies by the slice or by the whole. It offers very limited seating. My advice is to get your pie to-go and enjoy it elsewhere. When we arrived, the line was already out the door which made it feel very cramped in here. It would be worse to dine in here with the line hovering over your eating space on top of that. I couldn't tell you what my friend got, but I got the sweet potato pie - a very obvious seasonal favorite that was light and delish, but offered just enough to satisfy the sweet tooth. I ate this guilt-free knowing it's likely 'healthier' than some of the other offers. Finally tried this place after many times of only being in Richmond on a Monday when they're closed. We got the Sweet Potato Pecan and Asian Pear and Blackberry, both so delicious and worth the wait. We also got a savory pie for later (I think it was some chipotle flavored one?) that was also very good. This place is frequented by a lot of people, both from town and out of town, so expect there to be a line when you go. The line will go fast though and the service is great! The amount of flavor choices is a little overwhelming as well, so I'd recommend taking a look at the menu they post daily on their Instagram and Facebook if you're indecisive like me. Really gets its hooks in you and your tongue keeps reaching back to remember exactly how it tasted. The second one was pork and apple. Also good but the apple was lost and it needs the apple. The last was mince and cheese, the tastiest one and bit more on the salty savory side. Loved it. This is their #1 savory seller. Then, on to the main event: pie. I had a slice of Banoffee which is tricky to say and interesting to eat - bananas, caramel, toffee crust covered in whipped cream and dark cocoa powder. Frankly, who needs those bananas! Richmond, you keep surprising me with your burgeoning and exemplary food scene. For those that don't know, an New Zealand meat pie is a handheld thick crust savory (predominantly) meat filled pit. Very proper meat pies, and people know it! The line won't stop on a Saturday, but. It moves quickly, the clientele vibing-queer but almost no sitting space inside. Some counter space if you are lucky. This place offers a veg/vegan option, for those amongst us who don't eat meat, (butternut squash and chickpea at time of writing). The meat offerings are pork, beef, lamb, bacon with various veggies and cheeses. There are a total of about 7 savory options, and gosh maybe 12? sweet options. It's hard to choose only one, like really hard. ~$7.00/per savory pie. I ordered the mince meat and cheese, but I honestly don't think you can go wrong with any choice here. The bottom of the pie was the perfect thickness, and the filling generous enough to properly fill the pie. It wasn't strongly seasoned, which might be my biggest critique, and the mince meant little more then minced meat - whereas my friend had a lamb and there looked like larger wedges of potato in there. The top crust was thicker than I prefer, but I understand that's a personal preference, and truthfully the pie was warm and well cooked, a proper pie. My dessert pie was the sour cream and blueberry crumble. If the meat pie was good, this crumble was excellent. It's tangy and just the perfect sweet to balance it. I'd really reccomend you eat it warm, but they serve the to-go cold. Final review: 4.5 stars, good for a quick lunch to go. read more

Overhyped. By a LOT. When I said I was visiting Richmond, many recommended Proper Pie to me and was thrilled to try it out. I got the strawberry rhubarb pie since rhubarb pie isn't super common around me. I was so disappointed because 1) the pie itself was so....gummy. I understand the challenge of balancing fruit pies, but it was not good. 2) the crust was so doughy due to the wet fruit filling. 3) the top was like a separate thing and didn't sit well with the filling. The pie simply did not taste fresh. My boyfriend got the banana cream pie and it wasn't bad. I would give that one 3 stars, but it was nothing amazing. I understand what style of crust they were doing, but it was too crumbly and buttery (and I truly love butter). I appreciate the variety of options in all aspect (some are vegan as well I believe), but it might be better if they concentrated on a handful and did those really well. read more
