A dinner to remember. We shared the field green salad with chevre, which was lightly but thoroughly dressed in a generous portion. So good. Then sweet breads, also very good. Then the main attraction: cassoulet, their plat du jour on Thursdays. We ate at the bar because by the time our table was ready, we liked where we were including Gabriel the bartender. Cassoulet is one of those dishes that defines a restaurant's commitment to excellence. It requires a number of high quality ingredients to be prepared individually and come together so that each bite is slightly different and delicious. My previous gold standard for cassoulet was from long ago at Compagne. We ordered it and then found out from the co-owner that her husband, the chef, had worked at Cafe Compagne. So many places take shortcuts on one or two ingredients and still make a decent cassoulet. This dish was the real deal, including a very generous portion, and ample finely ground flavorful bread crumbs that mix in to create the delightful experience of each bite being unique and tasty. read more

Decent food. Utterly terrible service. My husband and I visited Prima Bistro for dinner tonight at the recommendation of a friend, for the first of what will hopefully be many visits to Whidbey Island. After tonight's experience, we've cancelled our second reservation, made for later during our stay. And I'll be warning other friends coming to the island to avoid this place entirely. Our table was lovely--on the rooftop with a fantastic view of the water. But that's where the pleasant experience ended. I'm not sure what it was--were we not dressed nicely enough to look like we could tip well? Was the four-top a couple tables over that our server focused 99% of her attention on a group of dear friends, about to leave and never be seen again? Whatever the situation, she made it clear we were not remotely a priority. Or really even worth remembering. And this was on a quiet Sunday evening, well before close, in a restaurant maybe half full. It would have been great if someone had come by to check in on how our food was. We could have let them know our entrees arrived lukewarm. Based on the temps, I suspect they were on the counter for a while before another server took it upon himself to deliver them. It wasn't our server--she was too busy chatting up that four-top to deliver our entrees herself or ask us how they were. It also would have been great to order a couple more rounds of drinks. And that side of bread our server suggested when I ordered my entree. But no one ever checked in on us to make those orders a possibility. Ordering dessert would have been great, too. They certainly sounded nice from the descriptions our server gave her favorite four-top. But I honestly just couldn't wait to leave once our entrees were done. I do want to give a sincere thank-you to the incredibly sweet woman bussing tables, who provided more attention than anyone else on staff. She was kind. We saw it, and the entirety of our tip was earned by her. I hope whoever that four-top was, they tipped very, very well. Because this restaurant won't see another dollar from us. read more

Brought guests from out of state over Labor Day weekend- made sure to have advance reservations to ensure a pleasant experience since it was a holiday weekend. When we arrived we were told that due to the weather our reservation would be later than anticipated. We had two elderly guests who were not able to stand for long periods of time and were kindly accommodated at a table near the bar. When our table was ready we were seated-however it felt as though a wait person was not assigned to our table. After 15 minutes we found our own menus and finally someone came to take our order. She was not interactive and our perception was that she was not enthusiastic about her job. Rockfish was not seasoned well and we were anxious to leave. This is an expensive establishment and in our opinion not worth it. read more

Every year in August, we take a yearly motorcycle ride with friends to have birthday lunch. Last summer was our 6th year and every time it's amazing! There's been reviews that complain about service/food, etc. during the pandemic. We didn't have that experience at all, in fact, it was refreshing to eat outside; we felt safe and at ease. We were grateful they were able to manage the restrictions, guidelines and keep staff during this difficult time. To be anything but empathetic seems selfish. Anyway, we have ordered many dishes and they have all been delicious. The oysters, mussels, beet salad, Croque Monsieur/madam, salad nicoise, the fromage platters are to die for with a glass of cold wine, pork belly and also the burger....we've always had a delicious meal and lively dining experience. The view is beautiful and the wait staff have always been pleasant with great wine and cheese recommendations. We look forward to our annual trip and an extra one if we can manage!! read more

We made a reservation for lunch on a Sunday. There were about six tables in three sections. It seemed busy and most of the tables were full. There were what appeared to be 5-7 servers, at least one bartender, and a hostess. It took quite awhile to place our order and two tables in after us were getting helped. At this price point, I expected better service, but it's Covid so maybe they schedule the more experienced staff for dinner service? It's not a deal breaker. Food came quickly. Craft cocktails (super yum!) came quickly too. Their housemade bitter cocktail was 10 stars. We ordered the beet salad which was deconstructed and HUGE and DIVINE. My friend ordered the veggie quiche which came out burnt - I would have sent it back but she powered through. I ordered the croque monsieur which was a little less than average. Seemed like it had been sitting the sauce long before plating since the whole thing was soggy. The French ham inside was high quality and excellent. The béchamel was barely there and that's the best part. I've definitely had a better croque. Maybe it was an off day. Very tasty shoestring fries. Seemed odd to have so many servers with so few tables. Maybe the management is trying to spread the income to staff in Covid times which is great. But no one seemed to know their role. Our server rarely checked on us, but two other staff did. Seemed unusual for a restaurant that seems to be higher end. Staff were pleasant and friendly when we did get attention and other than reusing paper menus, they seemed to be following safety protocol well. The young hostess was an especially bright spot. I'd go back and try dinner as you can't write a place off as average on only one visit. For lunch? Maybe something else. read more

We ordered the mussels and got the clams instead, but I'm glad I didn't complain, because the clams and chorizo were awesome. I didn't really care for the chickpea fries we ordered as a starter. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but they came out as 3-4 potato wedge sized 'fries'. I don't think they were fried either, or at least they didn't really have any crunch to the outside. Fantastic, friendly service, great atmosphere and delicious French bistro food. We really enjoyed tasting various cheeses, the duck confit and the classic mussels. I chose Prima Bistro for our anniversary dinner as part of a weekend on Whidbey Island. We both enjoy French cuisine, and this place had strong reviews. The restaurant is on the 2nd floor of a building in the centre of Langley. There is plenty of easy street parking nearby. The space is attractively decorated with French and local-themed art, and parts have an attractive view over the water. The environment was busy but not noisy. Service was very friendly and prompt. The menu selection is very large, which was one of the things that attracted me to the restaurant. There is a whole side of appetizers and small plates, and many choices I would have liked to try. There was also a wide selection of main courses - again, quite a few I would have liked. I could easily return here often. I tried to reserve (late on the day we intended to dine), but they were full, and told me to turn up as a walk in and expect a 5-45 minute wait on that summer weekend evening. In the end we turned up and were seated immediately. In fact, at no point did the tables get close to full, making me wonder why we were asked to take the gamble of the waitlist. We ordered three courses (appetizer, salad, main). My appetizer (chicken pate) was great as was my partner's fried cauliflower. My Caesar salad was ok, but instead of croutons it had one thin slice of toasted bread, which doesn't really work as well for me. My partner's beet salad was reportedly great. For the main dish I had the New York steak frites. The meat was prepared well and tender and flavourful. The frites were ultra-thin, crisp and hot. Overall this dish was very good, though I would personally prefer the fresh-cut style of fries over the thin ones. My partner's crab pasta was also good. All the food was great quality (as was the service) and yet our bill was only about $55/person plus tip. Really great value. I would definitely come back again. The Labor Day 2022 Hostess was so consistently rude we left without eating, and I have never done that anywhere before.

I recently came into your restaurant, and the food was wonderful, but even better was the service. A lovely young lady by the name of Kenzie was our server. I was with a group of elderly family members who were quite difficult and demanding. Kenzie handled it with grace and remained professional and friendly even when they were being difficult. Unfortuantely our recent visit was quite disappointing. The quality of the food was quite low, to the point that we we had to return one the dishes we ordered. Prices are really high, generally there was a clear mismatch between what was offered and what was paid for. The kids menu is comparable to a below-average school hot lunch. The outdoor seating area provides a pleasant atmosphere with its nice ambiance and views. Enhancing the overall experience with quality cuisine would indeed be a positive improvement. read more

We came here yesterday to wrap up a rainy Saturday trip to whidbey. There was no wait to get in, and we were seated on their covered, heated patio, which was very nice. We decided to split the lunch mussels with fries. I would give the food here 3.5 stars, pretty average but overpriced. I've definitely had better muscles on whidbey. My main issue with this place and why I am rating it 2 stars is the staff. We were seated at 2:58, and I asked the waiter for a happy hour menu (their happy hour is from 3-5). He replied, "that's only from 3-5, sorry" and walked away. Another girl ended up bringing a happy hour menu but was very condescending toward me, like I should have known better than to ask for the happy hour menu because it was "the same" as the lunch menu. As someone who has never dined there, I'm not sure how I was automatically expected to know that. Overall, I would recommend going elsewhere. There are far better options in whidbey, within reasonable price ranges and with friendlier staff. read more

This is our "go-to" restaurant in Langley! Our favorite dishes include mussels and fries (better than ones I've had in Paris), their lamb burgers, and any of their large salads. Save room for dessert. I think what I love the most is that it's an unpretentious Bistro where locals go in the middle of winter to have a great meal. The staff is always friendly and knowledgeable about what they serve. My husband and I went to Prima Bistro for our wedding anniversary dinner. This was the first 'sit-down restaurant' meal we had had since Covid so we weren't sure what to expect. It was WONDERFUL. The food was amazing, as Prima Bistro has always been. The staff was attentive, but cautious. The set-up felt safe. We were able to enjoy a wonderful meal (loved the snails!) and feel safe the whole time. I can't imagine how difficult it must be for restauranteurs to be soldiering on, allowed only 50 percent their normal seating, but with intense new protocols. We made a reservation for Saturday night and sat at a table outside right along the edge with a water view. They have apps, small plates, and entrees. I ordered the beet salad which was delicious, but slightly overdressed. Would order dressing on the side next time. Also ordered the lamb chops which were cooked to a nice medium rare. For French food lovers or if trying for the first time, PB was a huge disappointment. In no way does this flavorless attempt remotely resemble French food. The pate was a hard stringy loaf, the escargot was served in a watery herb/butter, and the bread was stale. Chickpea fries were interesting but the curry mayo for dipping was bland and mostly mayo. I don't mind paying such high prices for a delicious culinary experience, but this wasn't close. The service was fine but they looked stressed. I find it difficult to believe that this chef was trained in French cooking. Really bad and obviously will not return. read more

We chose the place because we liked the menu outside. We get seated and are told we can't order off the "dinner menu" because we are 30-minutes before the dinner menu is "available." Seriously? Two beer choices were out of stock. (I finally just gave in and selected whatever the waitress said they had in stock). The ONLY food option was their pub burger. Rather than leave, we go for it. Who doesn't like a good burger?! I know I do!! Too bad this wasn't a good burger. It wasn't a horrible burger in any way either. Just rather meh, with the generic side of fries. Our waitress disappeared. Never once came to check on us after the food arrived. Ultimately we had to flag someone down to get the bill. The bill came to a whopping $90. Bread (which they charge for), 2 pub burger platters, and 2 drinks. WTF? Maybe this would have felt more warranted had the service, choices, and food been amazing. But instead it just felt insult to injury. We came for a relaxing evening, enticed by an interested menu, and wanting to enjoy a nice atmosphere. We received rude and rushed service, seating at the bar, way overpriced food for what it was, and subjected to an absolutely stupid menu policy. The only restaurants that set time constraints on their menus are fast food joints and bars. Quality and upscale restaurants have that figured out. But boy did some of the food look and smell good as we walked out to lots of folks eating their dinner. read more

We were in town for NYE. We had never been to the town of Langley so we Yelped a few places and decided to call Prima to see how busy they were. The front desk lady was so kind and answered every question I had. We got there around 830ish. There was only room in the bar so we sat down. This is a cute small little restaurant but it is very clean and has a great atmosphere inside. The drinks were amazing. We got food too. The pork belly was perfect and not too oily which can happen. While on our first trip away from home since sheltering in place for 4+ months, we treated ourselves to a meal at Prima Bistro. Having eaten in restaurants all over the world, and being in the restaurant business myself since 1982, I felt disappointed by our experience. While the sweetbreads in apricot sauce small plate was divine, and the pork belly appetizer tasty, the Salad Niçoise was disappointing with a bland dressing and mealy ahi. We had ordered another appetizer but it had been sold out by the time our order reached the kitchen. Our server was pleasant enough when she returned with the bad news but the suggestions she made both contained gluten and we had mentioned at the onset that we eat gluten free. The pedestrian dining room and the service we received (we saw no less than 5 servers and other staff working the dining room and patio with less than 10 tables of guests) did not warrant the prices we paid, pandemic or not. This seems a matter of training, not service adjustments because of COVID-19. read more

Since I am usually famished after the flight and ferry, I treat myself to the burger and fries. The burgundy snails are also excellent as is the French onion soup. Service is friendly. read more
