A tasty hideaway of Americanized Chinese food. Excellent service. Hot, fresh steaming dishes that are more than you would expect. Get the meals for 2.... You'll Thank me later!

Food: 3-5 - 4 stars Service: 4 - 4.5 stars Decor/Ambiance: 5 stars Value: 4 stars The food is good -- generally American-Chinese fare with some Szechuan dishes. Last time, we had the almond chicken (good, very American-Chinese), fried rice (gets the job done, but could be improved with more flavor), Mongolian beef (good), more fried rice (same), and two cups of egg flower soup (very tasty). The crab cheese wantons that come with the Lunch Specials are delish. The jasmine tea was good, served hot in a nice, cast iron Chinese teapot. The service was prompt, attentive, and friendly. The decor and grounds are excellent - see pics below. They have put significant time, money, and effort into making this restaurant feel special. At ~$16 for a lunch special (soup, entree, rice dish, crab cheese wanton, and the obligatory fortune cookie), lunch prices are, as of Nov. 2023, pretty good (certainly very competitive) and make this restaurant a good value. If you're on the island and want Chinese, I think you've found the place. If you want someplace that just feels a bit special compared to most of the causal restaurants around, this is a very good option, too.

Chinese in Freeland...? Yes! Friends & I stayed in Langley for a long weekend getaway. China City stood out as a beautifully designed restaurant in a stately building. Kelsey, our server, was a rock star!

It taste really good. I recommend the Mongolian beef a little spicy but delicious. It's a little pricey, but I think it's worth it is my first review on a business bye‍

    Szechuan Chicken with Fried Rice

I recently became an Amateur Radio Operator and joined a club for Amateur Radio Operators. Today my club was having their monthly informal luncheon at China City in Freeland, WA. I attended to get a chance to meet some of the other members of the radio club I just joined. Including me, there were 8 of us and we were seated at a large round table were the entire center of the table rotated. Basically, a giant Lazy Susan! The 8 of us had a very nice time visiting with each other talking about all manner of subjects while enjoying our menu selections. I chose to order Szechuan Chicken with Fried Rice. I chose this dish for two reasons. Firstly, I wanted chicken that wasn't breaded. Secondly, this is a spicy dish and I was able to specify my spice level from 0, 3, 6, or 9. I really enjoy spicy food so I ordered spice level 9. The dish was very nice. I enjoyed the flavor of the sauce the chicken was served in and the fried rice was pretty good as well. My only complaint is a common one I have for most restaurants serving spicy dishes. It just didn't have much heat! Especially for an alleged spice level of 9! Granted, I enjoy spicy foods and someone that doesn't normally eat spicy foods may not have been able to eat it. But, I would expect the highest spice level offered to be something of a challenge. Oh well, the restaurant was probably trying to save me from myself. Overall, the Lunch was very enjoyable. The restaurant grounds are quite nice to look at, the interior is clean and tidy, the decor is what I expected to look like, and the staff was friendly, professional, and polite. I look forward to my next visit!

We came here for dinner when we were in town and didn't know what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised by the size of the restaurant, decor, and service! For appetizers, we got the crab Rangoons and the prawns. Both were good! For entrees I got the beef and chicken and my husband got the sweet and sour chicken. We shared an order of vegetable fried rice. The food was large portions and easily sharable but in my opinion, it was still a bit pricy. Overall, we enjoyed our dinner and we would come back if we were in the area!

OMG!! Where to start. The interior is huge...lots of options for any kind of seating imaginable. The staff is super sweet and works as a very efficient team to get your order, drinks, food and bill in a very impressive and timely manner. The biggest draw of course is the DELICIOUS and AUTHENTIC Chinese cuisine. We started off with the Egg Drop Soup and the Garlic Green Beans, then the House Egg Foo Young and the Mushu Pork. All fresh and delectable flavors. Everyone on Whidbey has known about this gem for years.. Definitely worth a trip!!!

I really liked The In Between's logo and interior design, it felt like stepping into the Prohibition era. We ordered a drink each from the Seasonal Summer Menu and shared a hummus plate. The drinks were nothing extraordinary but pretty good, and the hummus plate was a great shareable snack for the two of us. However, the service was super slow and frustrating. The staff were overextended since they were taking on both the bartender and server roles, so it was very difficult to catch their attention. We ended up having to approach them while they were in the middle of making a drink after trying to flag them down for 20 minutes and failing. We were in a bit of a rush towards the end so this was not the best experience, but definitely a bar worth checking out if you're not in a rush and have a lot of patience!

Whether it's breakfast or lunch, the food has consistently been outstanding. The menu is available all day ,except for the BBQ, which starts around 1pm. My wife swears by the French dip, and I'd put their chicken fried steak up against anyone's--it's easily the best I've had. The omelets are huge and packed with fillings, and the breakfast plates are great value. You get the choice of hash browns with toast or a pancake the size of the plate, and both options are excellent (deciding is the hardest part). Lately we've been sitting in the bar area when we go in around lunchtime (usually Thursday or Friday before our weekly shopping). The bartender is fantastic--friendly, attentive, and makes a great Bloody Maria. My memories here only stretch back a few decades, as a struggling musician playing the occasional show here back in the 90's and early Aughts, when they had local music nights. Stanwood seemed an exotic northern cowtown to this Seattle punk in those days. But the woody, ghosts-and-grit vibe enchanted me even then. Now it's a local hang. So cool. It's the only place in town with a pool table, and it's an uneven, wonderfully funky relic with mysterious, erm, attributes (mind the beam). There's an electronic dart board too, and a "beer garden" (read: outdoor area where you can smoke and drink) in warmer months, for those who haven't yet figured out that smoking is unhealthy and makes you stink. But: there it is. Adults only. Put your phone away. Talk to people. Eat and drink things that you probably shouldn't, and soak it in. The food is decent, no frills bar food, and your bartender (if you're lucky, Amy - she does a fine job) is usually also your cook, so have patience. The drinks are reasonably priced, and I recommend sticking with traditional mid-shelf cocktails and beer, and avoiding the foo-foo frozé stuff and sugary "specials".
