Birthday celebrant enjoying a very large, delicious dessert.
Donna S.

We had a lovely table overlooking the water for a Saturday evening dinner with friends. The food was tasty. They have heaters out on the deck for those who might be a little chilly. Attentive server, providing everything you requested, and offering even more.

Excellent local restaurant in Langley, WA which creates tasty food a delicious drinks. Key features are great bar, inside and outside seating which makes it a wonderful place to come for lunch or dinner. I enjoyed a delicious lamb burger and my partner had the trout. If you're visiting or living on Whidbey Island please plan to visit Prima.....

Risotto

My experience here felt very "meh." There aren't many restaurants in the area so choices were minimal, but I was drawn here by the picture of the duck leg confit and that did not disappoint. The clams and chorizo were a little saltier than I expected. Clams were decent, but the chorizo felt a bit overcooked and the texture was almost a bit crispy? The risotto was what was a bit shocking here. It tasted a bit undercooked, and my partner and I expected it to be creamy and savory, but it felt more like a weird salad? There were bell peppers and corn in there along with a bunch of parmesan just dropped on top as if it would save the dish somehow. Definitely wouldn't get that again. The duck was good, but likely wouldn't come back.

The Monday special

A very casual place. Wouldn't say it's for date night - very bright and lots of families. Service was quick and helpful. Food was good but unfortunately they were out of a lot of things we wanted to order. Also, their french fries are very tiny and skinny! Not my preference.

Matiz sardines (extra virgin olive oil, piquillo pepper, garlic, capers)

The white Burgundy available by the glass was exceptional. I really enjoyed the matiz sardines (extra virgin olive oil, piquillo pepper, garlic, capers). I came bubbling and sopping up with bread was a highlight. Unfortunately, the fish and chips were not great. The semolina-crusted rockfish seemed fresh and pretty moist but the coating was aggressively salty. Not a winner.

Went here with some friends who are local. We ate outside where there are views of the water. Cocktails were all delicious and unique. Amazing cheeses for the cheese board. All the food was spot on delicious. They even gave me gluten free crackers for the cheese. The burrata salad with grilled apricots and arugula was yummy. Amazing sauce on the 1/2 chicken. My 12 year old had the trout and absolutely loved it. Removed a star because multiple items we wanted to order were not available and our server was not aware and had to tell us after we ordered - we were also charged for one of the drinks we never received which we were told they no longer could make.

We left Prima Bistro less than impressed. The food was decent, but not amazing. We started with a small plate - les fromages - with three cheeses that were quite good. My wife ordered the Sunday plats du jour - coq au vin (red wine braised chicken hindquarters, which she said was just ok. I had the trout grenobloise - a pan seared rainbow trout. I enjoyed the meal. We finished with an average crème brûlée. The service was slow and less than attentive. The ambiance was average. There was little attention to detail. 3-stars is the best I can do. Let me end with this: cheap salt and pepper shakers that didn't match, a votive candle that wasn't lit, and the server took my silverware from my side plate and placed them directly on the table for my entree. $150 + tip deserves more!

French Onion Soup

Casual French bistro located above a market. Our party of 7 was seated right away by a lovely hostess. There was a large patio, but it was definitely too cold to sit outside. We had a view of the water from our booth. The portions were huge. If you're ordering a soup appetizer and a sandwich, you can share and still be stuffed. Lunch prices were reasonable. Next time I will try the Penn Cove mussels and a cocktail for dinner. Close to 4, but not quite there

Everything could improve, but mostly the food and exorbitant prices. Nice staff and wine selections, though.

Very salty food. Not good for those on low salt diets. Hostess was unfriendly. Waitstaff are kind.

Food is alright. Waiter not too personable. It felt like he did not want to be there. We won't be eating here again. Disappointment.

Husband had the Reuben and was unable to finish it as it was a fairly large portion. The staff is some of the sweetest I've experienced. Theres plenty to see so it didn't feel like a long wait. Husband got the breakfast burrito. I got the salmon hash which I thought was one of the best hashes I've tried. The eggs and potatoes were seasoned and cooked perfectly and there was a lot of salmon - good ratio of everything. Only other con was that after we got seated we waited 30 mins to get our food. But service was really good and we could tell the cooks were busy with other tickets. Overall we really enjoyed our meal and would definitely come back if we're on Whidbey again!

To start off the smell while waiting in line was amazing and I knew the food was going to be delicious. I ordered the crab cakes which were perfectly portioned and incredibly flavorful. It came with a delicious sauce on the side that I dunked every bite in. I also got a side of the Mac salad which was good, a little different from what I'm used to but I think a drizzle of soy or teriyaki sauce on top would have made it perfect for me. Ultimately it was hard to choose because everything sounded yummy so I am excited to visit again and try more items on the menu.

There is a very small seating area dedicated to the food truck-- the larger outdoor seating area is reserved for customers of the Brewery. However as long as you order a drink you're welcome to enjoy the food from Ikaika indoors or outdoors. The order process was easy-- they had the full menu on the glass of the ordering booth and a menu board with the gluten free options from their full menu. Once you place the order they give you a beeper that'll work anywhere on the property so you can definitely place the order and head inside the brewery to grab a drink. It did take a long time for our orders to come out-- there were 2 people on average preparing the food while 1 person was in charge of managing the register. The sauce that came with the fish and chips were amazing and got praise from all of us. We also ordered kimchi fried rice and while the kimchi was great, some of the rice tasted undercooked and the celery felt a little strange as an addition. The kalua sandwich was very solid and the buns were toasted beautifully golden and we did order the award winning beans but my partner was not a fan of the sweetness. The coleslaw that came with the fish and chips also had a gingery aftertaste.

The vibes inside are immaculate as a kind of barnyard chic and the pizza topping combos are hyperlocal and fascinatingly unique you have to give them a try. Unfortunately my first time trying a pizza place must always be a simple cheese pizza so that's what I ended up with this time. The crust is cooked a little extra charred which can work well as long as the dough is moist enough, oiled well, and the pizza has enough flavor overall to balance it out. I wouldn't say that was the case here but I think there are many, particular NY/NJ/CT area folks who might prefer this style. Overall the pizza was just OK for me, a bit too dry from the extra cooktime/char and maybe dough hydration, the sauce not being as refreshing and bright as I like, the cheese as bursting with creamy milkiness as I want on these types of pies. But it still hits the spot and I'm happy I stopped here at such a cool little spot on such a great island. But for Whidbey Island pizza I'll probably stick with Village Pizzaria for now. Who knows, I didn't get to try the cocktails here so may need to come back for that. I did also get a smoked carrot dish that was a bit underwhelming for how cool it sounded, just a bit too much acid and fat without a lot of spice and flavor to balance everything out. Still may come back for the dinner-only pastas, I'm simply too intrigued by the chic menu recipes and chillaxing vibes here.

Brasserie L'ecole - The steak

Brasserie L'ecole

There's a certain romance people expect when they step into a French brasserie--the low hum of…read moreconversation, the clink of glasses, a dimly lit room that whispers rather than shouts. Brasserie L'Ecole leans hard into that mood. Maybe a little too hard. Look, I get it. Lighting can be seductive. It can soften edges, blur imperfections, make everyone feel like they're in on something intimate and vaguely cinematic. But there's a fine line between ambiance and obscurity, and this place crosses it with confidence. When the room is dark enough that you're squinting to make out what's on your plate--when you can't even appreciate the color of the food you're about to eat--you start to wonder who this is really for. Diners? Or vampires? And then the food arrives. Let's talk about the French onion soup gratinée--the kind of dish that should feel like a warm, savory embrace. Deep, rich broth. Sweet, slow-cooked onions. That molten cap of cheese pulling apart in long, indulgent strands. Instead, what lands in front of you is a salt delivery system disguised as comfort food. A few spoonfuls in and your palate is already waving the white flag. It's not nuanced, not layered--just aggressively, relentlessly salty. A blunt instrument where a scalpel should be. You start thinking about wine. You *want* wine. But then reality kicks in: what's the point? Pairing anything with this level of salinity feels like pouring a decent bottle straight into the ocean. Whatever subtlety, whatever character the wine might have had--it doesn't stand a chance. Then comes the brasserie burger. In theory, a reliable fallback. In practice? More of the same. Heavy-handed seasoning that bulldozes everything else on the plate. After the soup, it's not just overkill--it's a slog. Each bite feels like work. Finishing it becomes less about enjoyment and more about stubbornness. By the end of the meal, you're not lingering over dessert or debating another glass. You're reaching for water. Lots of it. The kind of deep, desperate hydration that feels less like refreshment and more like recovery. Like you've just spent an afternoon face down on the shores of the Dead Sea. There's a good restaurant hiding in here somewhere; since the service is spot on, buried beneath the darkness, buried beneath the salt. But as it stands, the experience feels less like a Parisian escape and more like a test of endurance. Cheers or Jeers.. .up to you.
