Port Union was. Great experience. The menu has a great deal of variety and had something for everyone in our party. There are several dishes each for vegetable, seafood, and meat, as well as pasta dishes, small bites, and desserts. My favorites were the PU burger and the Arrachera. Both were unique and had distinct enhancements that took the dish above your normal fare. The burger had a super melty cheese that was almost like a hollandaise sauce. Bun was so soft. The Arrachera had delicious chimichuri as well as potato pave on the side that complemented the meat perfectly. The cocktail list was also excellent with a ton of variety. 'The Last Word' was delicious as well as the aviation. Service was friendly and very helpfully explained the menu options to us. I'm giving Bloom 4 stars instead of 3 because they are a plant-based restaurant; however, I have dined here several times and there have been short comings of one kind or another on the past few occasions - either food expectations or service seem to fall short of a high-priced restaurant experience. My main grudge on this night was the pour of sparkling wine (brut). Champagne flutes are typically six ounces. A standard pour of wine is five ounces. That means a pour of sparkling wine should stop about 1 inch from the rim of the glass*. Not so this time. I thought the bartender had emptied the bottle and was going to continue his pour with a new bottle, but no - that was not the case (I was seated at the bar.) I had gotten only about 3 out of 5 ounces of a $16 glass of wine. Not cool since every patron is charged an automatic 20% hospitality surcharge per check. (It looked more like a pour for a toast at a wedding!) Other than this major lapse in bartending etiquette - and yes, I considered saying something at the time but did not, hence, this review - my meal was fine (with the exception of the onion tart - not what I expected an onion tart to be: go with the crab cake!). *Note: I have worked part-time in F&B from 1994 to 2024 in all manner of restaurants/catering/country clubs, etc., including as a BASSET certified bartender, so I know what a pour of wine should be (and look like) in a standard champagne flute! read more

Bloomed has really bloomed! I came here one year ago and was blown away by this plant based kitchen. I decided to give it another go, to see if I lived up to my own hype. And it definitely did. The menu has stayed pretty similar, with a lot of the same favorites returning like the oyster mushrooms! But this time I tried the gnocchi which was super flavorful and filling. But what blew my away was the salmon. It genuinely smelled and tasted just like salmon! And I loved that the dish wasn't super inventive, just some quinoa and a sauce which realu made the salmon shiny. I cannot believe it was all plant based. The mushrooms oysters was a favorite dish for the table - crunchy, spicy and delicious. I had the lasagna which I loved. My husband had the gnocchi which we didn't love - the sweet potato made it dense and the gochujang was interesting, offing a mild taste. That dish just wasn't for us. The desserts were... fine. I came back to Bloom to try their brunch and it was sooo good! We had a reservation but it was not very crowded. Our server was attentive and the food came out so fast. The two of us shared food and honestly, this was more than enough. The drink I ordered was the defying gravity. It was so good, not too sweet, and very pretty. We split the turnip causa and the cajun maitaki. The turnip causa was so interesting. I don't think I've ever had anything like it before, but I enjoyed it. The turnip was flavorful. The other dish was a spin on chicken and waffles. The mushrooms were so well done and they gave a huge portion. The outside was crispy and inside was tender and soft. This is a great spot to add to your happy hour rotation!! I came here on a Monday around 5:30pm. (Their happy hour is 5-6pm.) Their happy hour menu is small but mighty! And the perfect amount of selection and food for 2 people. For the quality of vegan food and price, this is a happy hour deal that is almost unbeatable (their sister restaurant Amaru (not vegan) tops the list for me, but this place matches the quality of food, service, and creativity!). Between my partner and I, we got 2 cocktails (Alone in Kyoto and Bloom's Garden; $8 each). My favorite was Bloom's Garden because I love a refreshing and botanical gin-based drink! The presentation was also beautiful with the flowers on top. We also got 3 food items off their happy hour menu: whipped feta, turnip causa, and crispy oysters. Each dish was packed with flavor and the perfect balance of texture variation. My favorite was the whipped feta. The "feta" is made with cashew and was so creamy! And it was served with a tomato Makhani which offered a savory pairing with the cashew feta, and was perfect with the sourdough bread. The happy hour is easily 5/5, one of the best happy hours in Chicago along with their sister restaurant, Amaru! There are a selection of thoughtfully crafted gin-based cocktails for $8. They look beautiful and taste delicious! I had the Alone in Kyoto which was citrusy and not too sweet. The bloom's garden really smelled like a garden and had a beautiful purple gradient. Service was really friendly and checked in frequently and refilled waters often. The food was incredible. The tuna causa was like a hand roll but with potato croquette and smoked turnip on top. I loved the creaminess and smokiness of the turnip. The crispy oysters were super good too, the sauce and crunch reminded me of orange chicken, in a good way. The whipped feta was incredible. The cashew feta and tomato makhani with the perfectly charred sourdough bread exceeded my expectations of what a bread and cheese dip could be. The spices in the tomato gave it a really deep flavor profile and their sourdough is perfectly crunchy yet soft. We had extra sauce leftover so we put in an order of extra bread to finish it up. All the plants inside and the decor give it a really calming atmosphere. They had good music playing at a comfortable volume where you can have a conversation. The water cups are my favorite with the textured walls. I love the fancy plates they use for their dishes, it elevates the experience but the vibe is on the more casual side. Going vegan--especially with no fried foods--can definitely make dining out a bit tricky. Right now, I'm doing a cleanse, which limits my food options quite a bit. My sister wanted to take me out for my birthday, so we decided to try Bloom Plant Based Kitchen, located at 1559 North Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL. The interior was super cute--very earthy and green, with a calming vibe. Our waitress was wonderful, even though it was a busy day. She was friendly and tried her best to answer all our questions. That said, I would've appreciated more photos on the menu. The descriptions were fine, but for a newcomer, it was hard to know what to expect. I tried checking Yelp for photos, but unfortunately, most of the dishes that caught my eye were no longer on the menu, which was disappointing. Since I'm currently avoiding fried foods and sweets, the brunch menu had very limited options for me. (Totally a me thing--I get it.) I did want to mention that their brunch menu doesn't include dinner items, so just something to keep in mind when planning a visit. I ended up getting the vegan omelette, which was flavorful and delicious. My sister, who's also doing the cleanse, went with the double cheese vegan burger. She thought it was just okay--the patty could've used more seasoning. Overall, the experience was decent. My dietary restrictions definitely played a big role in what I could try, so I feel like I didn't get the full Bloom experience. My husband and I went for brunch during the first weekend that Port Union was open for brunch. We had been fans of Bloom, which formerly occupied the space and recently closed, and wanted to see Chef Rodolfo's next chapter. The atmosphere was welcoming, the service excellent, and the food and coffee were delicious. We enjoyed two appetizers: The crackling shrimp was a standout. It had an amazing sauce and texture with the right amount of kick and an unusual combination of flavors -- the edible fried lemon slices added a tart touch to the savory dish. Then we tried the pan de ajo (garlic brioche) with delicate souffled eggs, whipped ricotta, chili oil and chives. The bread was nestled in its own cast iron pan. Yummy! For our mains we had the milanesa chicken and waffles -- I love chicken and waffles so was anxious to try it. It didn't disappoint. The chicken was perfectly crispy and the maple syrup surprised with a subtle spiciness. The portion was generous enough for a second meal. We also tried the crispy branzino and eggs cooked to order and flat top vegetables. It was tasty but not the hit of the meal. Service was very slow and the time between the courses and ordering didn't make much sense. The food was small bites at entree prices. Some items were a complete miss and a few were top notch. An example is the oysters, they had potential for great flavor but they were fried very hard for no reason and wish it had more than 2 pieces of broccoli since there were no sides of broccoli available. My hubby had the carbonara with cutlet and it had a overly smoky taste. Same as our peppers we ordered. I thought the smoky flavor was from the peppers but after tasting the pasta I wondered if they went overboard with the liquid smoke. The drinks were okay but nothing notable. The service is always very friendly and welcoming. They appreciate their customers and regulars and always seem genuinely happy to see me. Rarely is there a mistake and if so they make it right promptly. They have even given me discounts and free items just to thank me. I love their specials and special events where they do a multi course meal with descriptions. The ambiance is upscale but casual. They have plants around the room and proudly display their greenhouse of on site grown herbs. Their cocktails are a work of art as well. Easily accessible from the blue line Damen stop or a pleasant walk from the Clybourn Metra station. Went with some friends for Chicago Restaurant week, and I must say... I'm pleasantly surprised! The atmosphere in here is like a garden and a restaurant combined into one. Good music, lots of greenery, and the servers are amazing!! One dish really caught my eye and took me by surprise. I'm never in this area so it was nice to find something that I can recommend if I'm ever there again. French Onion Tart - 6/10, wasn't my favorite and I thought it kind of lacked in flavor. However, decent pre-dinner bite. Crispy Oysters - 9/10, this was the showstopper for me. The sauce was amazing and the veggies were grilled to perfection with a good crunch. Lasagna - 8/10, if you told me this had meat in it I'd 100% believe you. Nothing about it made me think it was any different from a regular lasagna, and I don't usually eat it to begin with. Yuzu Tart & Ube Bites - 7.5/10, the yuzu tart tasted exactly like lemon meringue and the ube tastes like a mini cupcake. We came for dinner last Friday and neither my friend nor I are vegan, but it looked delicious and we were looking for something plant based. It was also the day before her birthay, so it looked like a good spot to have something more gourmet. All the food was so impressive - we both really enjoyed it. We had the besitos de yuca, the grand cheese board, the carbonara pasta, the artichokes, and the "crispy oysters". All were really divine. The only one we weren't thrilled about were the "crispy oysters", which were deep fried oyster mushrooms that were cut really thin, so they ended up being more batter than anything else, and then they were dressed in a sweet soy like sauce. It reminded of us a Chinese stir fry. The description didn't really match the dish, which we actually found to be the case for several dishes, but this was the only one we didn't love. What I really loved was how seasonal the menu was and lots of veggies incorporated (I tend to hate vegan or GF foods that try to be other things that will never taste as good). The menu is a QR code and changes online. The Neda's Cup is a Pimm's cup with yuzu and peach - delicious! The menu is meant to be shared family style but you could also order for yourself. My favorites were the broccolini, fried oysters, harvest risotto, and the fruit cobbler. The fried oysters were the star of the table for sure. Crispy and addictive! It also comes with some roasted kale and broccoli. The broccolini was just a really good roasted broccolini - smoky, well seasoned, and the mustard vinaigrette really balanced it. I did not care for the green goddess salad - it was too acidic and missing something. It would be okay as a side but since I primarily ordered it for myself, it was too much. The lion's mane and frites were okay but a bit much. Not sure it's worth the price point of $42 but you do get a lot! The fries were good. The beet tart was interesting- I think our party was more confused by it than anything. It was very creamy from the almond goat cheese but also very spicy (I think from a hot oil topping). It wasn't that beet forward. The crust was good too. The fruit cobbler was perfect- I realized that the cobbler was GF and the ice cream was vegan, so those parts were just okay but the fruit itself was delectable and warm. So happy to discover an upscale vegan dining experience on the NW side. The room is fairly large with a cool look, not fancy. The kitchen is buzzing with at times seven people back there assembling orders Our waitress Misha was super friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. The beer selection was from a delicious inventive local Mexican brewery Casahumilde . My daughter said her cocktail was her favorite she has had in a long time. Everything was very delicious and pleasantly presented. From the quinoa salad, French onion tart, crispy oysters, sun-dried tomato sashimi, lasagne, truffle Yucca gnocchi, to the desserts. August 2024: I was super excited to experience Bloom again. The crab cake is still my favorite item on the menu; I recommend everyone experience it! We also tried the Katsu Cutlet and it was absolutely delicious with the perfect balance of sweet and spicy; hopefully, this becomes a permanent part of the menu. We also ventured out and tried the Jackfruit Shortrib which was a miss. I knew it could be a miss because I'm very familiar with jackfruit texture. It simply is too soft and doesn't hold up to the texture that one would think of when you hear "rib". All said, Bloom is still a favorite and I will continue to return to try my favorites and the seasonal items. March 2024review: I was quite fortunate to experience Bloom, twice, in one week. Both visits were in celebration of my birthday. The first visit was on my birthday, and we were a party of 12, plus some additional folks showed up to celebrate and had to get a separate table to accommodate the additional 3. There were 2 of us that were vegan, 1 vegetarian, and the remainder were non-vegan. Overall, the majority enjoyed their meals! One of the couples didn't care for the kale salad's unique flavors, so I gladly finished it off because I loved the variety of flavors and textures of the salad. Maybe our waiter was overwhelmed with my party because there were a few hiccups. I ordered the cheese board when we started our drink orders and never received it. It turned out to not be a huge thing for me, only because the rest of my dishes filled me up. Another in my party ordered the crispy oyster mushrooms and we later found out that she received the Chateaubriand which is a lion's mane dish. She has recently ventured into the world of veganism and mushrooms, so she was not aware that she received the wrong dish. Quite a mix up, especially with the price; the crispy mushroom dish is $13/$14, the latter is $42. Imagine the surprise when the bill came. Yikes! Beyond the hiccups there, I enjoyed, just about, every dish I had. The Turnip Causa was ah-mazing! At first sight, I thought it would be a cold bite, but was surprised and satisfied to taste the potato croquet! Everybody at the table enjoyed the crab cakes! I considered ordering one to-go! The Carbonara was just "meh" to me, but one my cousin's enjoyed her's. The shortbread at the bottom of the chocolate mousse was so delightful and balanced out the textures of the dessert. I was not a fan of the baked Alaska, but others were; all about preference and taste there. In my effort to reduce my alcohol intake, I ordered the Strawberry Styles; this cocktail has sold me on the alcohol-free Seedlip Spice 94. I let someone else taste mine before they ordered alcohol, and they switched to ordering the Strawberry Styles! The second visit was for two. My brother decided to treat me to a separate birthday meal and I chose Bloom. This was 4 days after my first visit! I ordered everything I had on my previous visit, minus the Carbonara. Everything was just as delicious; I love the consistency. Our waitress was so lovely and attentive; she helped my brother decide which cocktails to try. And I think their portion size is just right. I feel like they maybe get a little carried away by the conceptual experimentation at the expense of taste. I tried the banana blossom crab cake, which was good if a bit salty, and the risotto, which tasted way too salty to me. So they're 1 for 2 -- which is not to say not worth it. My vegan best friend flew in to Chicago for work and I wanted to take her to an amazing plant-based dinner while she was in town. Online reviews from a multitude of platforms lead me to Bloom PBK. I had originally made a reservation for a Thursday night at 7:30, but we found out Wednesday night that her flight was cancelled and she wasn't flying in until Friday. I called to see if they would be able to accommodate moving my reservation and staff were so kind and helpful on the phone, and we had no issue moving the reservation to Saturday at 7:30. This now (accidentally) landed us dining during Chicago Restaurant Week! There is plenty of street parking in area surrounding the restaurant, be mindful that metered parking is only for 2 hours (whoopsie!) and you WILL get ticketed. Walking in, the ambiance is cozy and feels luxurious. Once of the first comments I made was how amazing it smelled walking into the restaurant. We were greeted by a server while the hostess was busy, and the hostess was quickly back to take us to our seat. We were a little early for our reservation, and we were still accommodated quickly. I can't express enough how kind and accommodating Bloom PBK was. Our server, Misha (sp? I'm so sorry if I spelled it wrong!), was INCREDIBLE. Our dining experience was absolutely made by Misha, and I can't thank them enough for how great our night was. We had so many questions about menu items, ingredients, etc. and Misha was kind, knowledgeable, and patient, even taking super cute photos of my best friend and I before we left. We started with the Cultured Cheese Board to share. This was a mind-blowing spread of plant based cheeses and accoutrements. The whipped cashew requeson was delicate and light while deep and rich, the tiny little spiced pepitas were crunchy, the house pickles added a perfect cut through the richer ingredients. Chef's kiss - do not skip this starter to chat over. We both decided to do the $60 tier of Restaurant Week Menu. This is a 4 course dinner, and we were absolutely stuffed by the time we left (even with some leftovers!). Our choices between us included the French Onion Tart, Sun-Dried Tomato Sashimi, Crab Cake, Truffle Yuca Gnocchi, Bengal Gram Makhani, and of course the dessert duo from the chef, which included Ube Cheesecake and a Parsnip Yuzu Curd. What an incredible, high end, stunning presentation of food. My favorite bites included the tomato sashimi - I have no idea what they did to those little tomatoes to make them taste like THAT but WOW - and the Yuca Gnocchi with the butternut squash puree it comes served on. I could talk for hours about this dinner, and Bloom PBK should not be slept on. This was one of the most fulfilling and satisfying dining experiences I've had since moving to Chicago. Visited with a vegan friend for Chicago Restaurant Week 2025, and had a great experience! True to its name, the restaurant itself is bright with lots of real greenery. There were some slight modifications to the menu from the original RW menus, but they were all just as delicious. We selected dishes from both the $45 and $60 menus. The server gave us some great recommendations. The french onion tart to start was a definite highlight, and I would come back for the incredible dessert alone! read more

First of all, I love that all menu items are 100% Plant-Based & Gluten Free. I'd wanted to dine here for a while but their standard menu starts at 5 PM, and we're usually not in the city at that time anymore. When I saw that they have brunch hours now, I was excited to finally give them a try but disappointed that many of the items on the dinner menu aren't available for brunch. We started with dessert as an appetizer and had the Camote Cheesecake, Cashew sweet potato, coconut cream, almond tahini crust ($12). This was unique and delicious. My husband went with the Shrooms and Waffles, Crispy maitake mushrooms, butter, maple syrup ($15), which he enjoyed. I had a Smash Burger, Two almond-beet smash patties, cheddar, lemon aioli, onions, tomatoes, arugula ($15). I didn't love mine, but I was impressed with the food enough in general that I would return and try more items. The interior is really nicely decorated, and the vibe definitely would have been perfect for cocktails if we were there at a different time. The only negative was that there was a loud group seated across the room, and their noise definitely echoed in the space and impacted our dining experience. read more

I recently tried Bloom's brunch menu with friends and our experience was a bit underwhelming! We had a prior reservation and checking in was pretty smooth. Bloom is plant based and gluten free kitchen and I was very excited to try it considering there aren't a lot of Vegan restaurants available. We ordered Shrooms and Waffles, Bloom Kebabs and Lomo Saltado. The Shrooms and Waffles were very bitter and they had a very weird aftertaste. We asked the server if we could replace it and they checked with us to see what's wrong so that they can give appropriate feedback to the kitchen. I feel the service was good and they easily replaced the dish and took it off the bill as well. We replaced waffles with Turnip Causa. Turnip Causa was good, I really liked the crispy potato croquettes at the bottom of the Causa. Bloom Kebabs were also very flavorful, they were based on a cauliflower crust bread to make the dish GF. Kebabs were served with a sour sauce which complimented the overall dish. Lomo Saltado was probably our favorite dish. It had a lot of veggies mixed with Rice, and had South American flavors. For deserts we ordered Chocolate mousse. I think the taste for this one eventually grew on me. The mousse was based on a lemon shortbread, I was expecting a sour-sweet taste, however the sweetness overpowered the lemon tarty taste. I may give Bloom another try for their dinner menu as I love exploring Vegan meals. Brunch options were a bit OK and I'm not sure if I'll return again for brunch. We did not try any alcohol this time but they have an extensive cocktails menu. read more

YAY plant based dining! Friendly for those with nut allergies, too. The food, ambiance, price, and service were all good. I will say the savory dishes (the crab cakes and chilaquiles) were too mushy/salty for my liking. The omelette was good. The French toast was fine. My non-vegan friend liked this place more than I did, so I'd say it's all-diets-approved. read more
