My wife and I were very excited to try it out after having a decent time at Bastille the weekend before for Sunday Happy-Hour and peeking through the windows a couple times when out walking around.
While the inside was amazing, aesthetically, this place needs serious help and quick.
1. The front of house staff was extremely disorganized, inattentive, inconsistent, and either confused, disgruntled, or just indifferent about providing even a basic level of service.
2. Before ordering, we asked if anything off the dinner menu was available and were told, "No, not until 5". We then asked if the tacos came with rice or beans and were told "they might, or else it's some salad". Ok, so we ordered two different types of tacos and an order of chips and salsa and a couple Margaritas.
3. Margaritas came out quickly, my rim was barely salted, wife's heavily coated. Not a big deal, the drinks were tasty. It was funny to watch the bartender "straw-taste" every single mixed drink that went out...a week into the restaurant being open, that's a little odd, but whatever.
4. After waiting 5-10 minutes while other tables around us had orders of chips, salsa, and giant bowls of guacamole brought...which wasn't on the menu and wasn't mentioned by our server despite the fact that we asked if anything off the dinner menu was available, we were starting to wonder what was up.
5. Our tacos showed up, brought out by the one person who seemed to be hustling in the place...an older, kind of stressed looking runner or busser. He gave the tacos to the right person, explained the sauce, etc. Not bad.
6. Still no chips, so we flagged down someone else and finally about 15 minutes after we'd ordered, we got half a bowl of cold chips and two salsas...which were actually decent, but there wasn't much salsa there and the chips were really not good.
7. The tacos were actually decent. I like that they use quality meats and the flavor was good...good, but not great. As we watched the time it took others to get their tacos, it made me wonder what was going on in the kitchen and how these were prepped. The tacos came out in 3 minutes for some people. Does that indicate they just make up some chaffing trays a couple hours before and run an assembly line during happy hour as a cash cow for the restaurant? Seems that way. Granted, at $7.50, they weren't that much more than what you pay at Chipotle for assembly line chow, but they also weren't that much better. And with nothing to order to accompany them (would it be that hard to offer some beans, guac, soup, dessert?), it's a pretty odd and incomplete offering for happy hour.
8. After sitting with empty plates for another 10-15 minutes while numerous front of house staff walked by ignoring us, joked at the bar, etc., we had to flag down a different busser and ask for our bill. He acted pissy and said he'd let our server know. A couple minutes later, the same busser came back with the bill, dropped it, and said nothing. Meanwhile, we could see our initial server, who we hadn't heard from since he took our order, at the back of the restaurant chatting with another server.
9. $31 for appetizers and two margaritas with dreadful service. Wow. And none of the people around us looked like they were pleased either...
Add that all up and you get one disappointing afternoon out. Until we see a review saying that they've fired the current management and brought in someone that knows what they're doing to get the front of the house straightened out AND come up with a menu that's worth paying decent money for, we certainly will not be back. Maybe it's just growing pains for them, but if you're not ready to fully open the restaurant, you shouldn't.
What a shame. It's such a beautiful place when you first walk in. read more
