This place WOW-ed me. My fiance and I didn't make reservations the day before Valentine's Day and thought we would just try our luck. So many of our regular spots had lines out the door, which was no surprise, but we ended up getting a table here. Figured Mexican food is hard to mess up. Started with drinks- THE BEST MARGARITA I HAVE EVER HAD. It was perfectly balanced, fresh, just perfect to me. My fiance got a horchata and loved it too. They have an option where you can try ALL of their dips for $20, which I couldn't resist. It was so fun, they had like 9 different ones! I got the shrimp tacos and they were so flavorful that I almost gasped. The creamy sauce, crunchy veggie toppers, smooth avocado, and perfectly cooked shrimp...just wow. I will be dreaming about this dish for years to come. I am a pescatarian and gluten free and there were TONS of options for me. They mostly use corn for everything, not flour. The staff was gracious and kind. They seemed a little understaffed but truly made the most of it and made every table feel attended to and special, which was so lovely. Went back to Maiz Molino recently on a Sunday night for dinner w/ friends. I was disappointed to see that the menu has changed a lot (and not just seasonally, but just a completely different menu) since the last time I visited (maybe a year ago or so). Before it seemed like Maiz Molino was focusing on elevated, unique Mexican dishes (shown in the pics in my prior review such as short rib, and other sort of "fusion" dishes, and more seafood focused, etc.) Now, the menu seems way more generic and casual like enchiladas, tacos, quesadillas, tamales, etc. just offered w/ different proteins. They are still focusing on maiz but just a bit more generic in the preparation and offerings. Also, they had 2 separate menus which was a bit confusing. One is a generic all day menu and then another menu had brunch and dinner on it. It was around 5:30 p.m. but they were out of a particular steak dish that we were interested in. Service was friendly. We had enchiladas, a dip sampler (for appetizer) and Tlacoyos. Everything was fine but nothing really stood out, sadly. It wasn't very busy while we were there, so hoping that they are doing ok as a business. I would love to come back if they brought back the old menu w/ things that you cannot really find elsewhere, including the great cocktail menu and desserts that were offered previously. read more

What a cute restaurant! Stepping inside takes me back to Mexico. Such vibrant colors and decor. The staff were super nice and helpful being that it was our first time. The portions are huge here. We ordered the chilaquiles with duck and pozole for brunch. They also served their regular lunch menu at brunch too. Everything was very tasty and the pozole was full of meat too. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the cafe de olla. It would be a good choice for anyone who likes their coffee on the sweeter side with a strong cinnamon flavor. read more

Went to Maiz Molino for lunch with a party of six and had a great experience! It's a walk up to the counter and order situation, but also has nice seating. Came here with a friend this past Saturday for brunch. First of all the space is very cool the bar is covered in ceramic tiles and each is a different design. It's bright and cheerful. We both had dinner planes later and were looking around at what people were ordering and realized the portions were very generous and we didn't think we could finish one by ourselves we barely finished what we ordered and we had split an entree. We split the Asada Chilaquiles Rojo. Which was delicious we like how the chips were a little firmer. I had a Jamaica to drink and my friend had an iced horchata latte we enjoyed those as well. I got food poisoning within eight hours of eating dinner here in the middle of the night. It was just virulent. I was the only person at my table who ate the Molay so it could've been that of course there's always a possibility. I got food poisoning elsewhere, but That was my last meal before I got sick. I did not like the house made tortillas even though they were made fresh and in house. They tasted very bland and on appetizing to me. Really overall, this place was a big disappointment. I love the original Maiz location in the market, but the vibe at this one is just....sterile. Prices are high and the menu is upscale, but it was kind of terrible for a date night. The lights were really bright, and though we were the only customers there on a Friday evening, the server didn't want to spend any time explaining things to us. This would be fine if the menu were in English, but it was mostly not in English, and many of the items were kind of uncommon. This led to us spending a lot of time on our phones trying to look things up. Even with the translations, the menu items aren't described very well on the menu, so it's hard to know what everything comes with. Maybe this place is better for lunch or brunch, but I definitely wouldn't recommend it for dinner. I will say the food is fantastic, so if that's your only priority, it's definitely worth a try. We had mole and lengua and a few other things, and everything was delicious and made with great ingredients. read more

Wonderful dinner at Maiz on a Thursday evening. We were the first ones here at 5, more folks came in around the time we left 6:10~ I ordered the trio tacos - carnitas, pastor & chicken and requested spicy salsa (it was good!) My husband ordered the Carne Asada plate and it was to his liking with spicy pepper, pickled bits, pico de gallo, sausage and salsa. It also came with some fresh tortillas. You can really taste the freshness and authenticity of their food at Maiz. The service was exceptional. Very attentive and patient. Food came out at a good time, 15 mins. i really enjoyed my meal here, and i appreciate that they are open fairly late! came around 8:30 on saturday, and there were a few tables open. they have bar seating too if you're interested in that. their menu has something for everyone, some small plates/shareables, entrees, desserts, and drinks. we got the sampler ($20) that comes with small helpings of each salsa/dip. really enjoyed the green salsa, it was bright and tangy, not too spicy. the pico de gallo salsa was as expected, nothing too unique, the refried beans were smooth and flavorful. the pickles were crisp and tart. beware of that pepper though, it's very very spicy, and seasoned very well. i think the stand out of this meal for me was the beef tongue (lengua) tacos! wow!!! it was so tender and tasted so good, and pairs very well with the green salsa it comes with. i would order 2 orders for myself next time. we also got the chicken mole. it definitely has that chocolate-y sweet taste to it. comes with rice and beans but because we came late they were out of rice, so we got the option to sub with veggies or more beans. overall a fantastic meal, with fantastic flavors, a bit pricey but i dont mind because it's so good. read more

My wife and I chose this restaurant for Valentine's Day and her birthday dinner, and it ended up being the worst restaurant experience we've ever had. I've never written a review like this before, but this experience left us feeling like we had to. We arrived at 8:30 PM and were seated promptly. For Valentine's Day, they were offering a prix fixe menu (~$82-$84 per person, 5-6 courses). We politely asked if we could order from the regular menu instead. Our server hesitated and made us feel uncomfortable for not choosing the Valentine's menu. From that moment on, the service noticeably shifted, and we honestly felt like we were deprioritized for not ordering the more expensive option. Before we even ordered food, we were asked at least three separate times if we wanted drinks other than water, which started to feel pushy and uncomfortable. It took ~15 minutes just to place our order. I ordered a margarita, and my wife ordered water. After that, we were essentially forgotten. No check-ins, no refills, no communication. We sat watching servers walk around and talk while we waited. During this long wait: * We noticed a couple who were seated shortly after us leave the restaurant without ever ordering. * We also watched multiple couples who arrived after us receive their appetizers and entrées well before we did. They had ordered from the Valentine's menu, which made it feel like we were being given less attention for ordering from the regular menu. By 9:45 PM (over an hour later) we still had no food. We flagged down our server and told him we wanted to cancel our order and leave because the wait was unacceptable and we were extremely unhappy. He said he would check on the kitchen, came back, and claimed the food was "ready to come out." I told him clearly: If it is ready right now, we will stay. If not, we're leaving. The food came out shortly after, and it was not worth the wait in the slightest. My wife's tacos and my chilaquiles were terrible. The meat in both dishes had a rubbery texture that was difficult to chew, and my chips were soggy and limp. After waiting over an hour, the food felt rushed, poorly prepared, and honestly inedible. To make matters worse: * We never received water refills until the food arrived. * No one checked on us during the long wait. * We could visibly see servers talking and looking toward our table, which made the experience even more uncomfortable. * The margarita we were charged full price for tasted like overly sweet Sprite with little to no alcohol. We told the server we were very unhappy and wanted to leave. To his credit, he comped the meals, but we were still charged for the drink. We left around 9:50 PM, frustrated and disappointed that our Valentine's Day and birthday dinner was completely ruined. We even took the boxed leftovers with us thinking we might try to salvage the meal later, but we ended up throwing the food away in the first trash bin we found because we simply weren't looking forward to eating it. We walked back to our hotel (no car), and by the time we got there it was too late to find another dinner option. This restaurant didn't just disappoint us, it ruined our entire evening. We've never written a review like this before, but this experience was too bad to ignore. Diners should not feel penalized for ordering from the regular menu, and the level of service and food quality we experienced was unacceptable from start to finish. Restaurant had only a few tables busy when we arrived but by the middle of our meal it was packed with people. With lots of people and semi-loud music, it's on the noisy side, but still a great spot to enjoy dinner. Bathrooms were clean. Food: + cucumber lime agua fresca - very refreshing and really enjoyed with our meal + Duck mole chalupa - mole sauce was very flavorful and tasty, duck was tender. We really liked this appetizer! + Molino's Asado - also nicely executed. The meat was tender and was on top of a bed of bean puree with salsa and green sauce. Everything was flavorful and the tortillas made a nice addition to the entree. + Elote Risotto - not as protein hearty but had a nice flavor and texture. There was a red oil on it that had a nice kick. + Dessert - flan - a great way to end our meal. Overall, we really enjoyed the food here. In our opinion, the price is a little high for the portion, but the meal was tasty and service was great, so we would be happy to come back again to try their other items or to check out their lunch options. read more

I walked past this restaurant a few times and was curious because of the super cute and bright interior. The restaurant has very modern decoration with lots of colourful tiles. Noise level is moderate with no loud music. There is a long table that works for big group, but otherwise there aren't a lot of tables so you should get a reservation in case it gets busy. Our group of 3 had no problem with getting seated during dinner time. I got the taco plates with 3 tacos: steak rancheros, chicken and pork. They come with rice and beans as well. Mine comes with a green sauce and my friend with the exact same taco plate order comes with a spicy red sauce. It was very delicious! I'm usually not a big fan of beans but I love the beans that came with the dish. Taco filling has lots of meat. Both green and red sauces were great. I also tried the chips and salsa, it tastes good and crunchy. Service: when we first got seated, the staff did not bring us a menu so we were a little confused. They brought us a physical menu after about 5 minutes. We were given a dinner menu but the drinks and the taco plates were not on it. I ended up finding their drink menu on their websites. We found out about the taco plate after my friend asked the staff, and the staff pointed him to a little sign at the counter. I was confused because the menu were all over the place. This did not affect my experience a lot but I think they could do a better job on the menu. The rest of the service was fine. Parking: street parking is not hard to find. Our server, Mac, gave us some really good recs and the run down of the restaurant. Their whole thing is they hand make the tortillas from corn straight from Mexico! We got the Tlacoyos and Enchiladas. Wow the Tlacoyos are like a Mexican samosa made from tortillas! There's a deliciousy layer of cheese on the bottom topped with your fave protein. Maíz molino and Maíz (at Pike Place) share the same menu, the same taste, the only difference is that Molino is more spacious and has more tables to accommodate more guests. Molino Maíz is located a couple of blocks away from the Amazon Spheres, so most of the diners are people who work at amazon. Great ambience, Latin music, large tables for large groups. Honored to be Maiz's first review for its newest location. Our experience was nothing short of aMAIZing (thanking my doorman for the perfect pun). Drinks: Whitexican - Think espresso martini with mezcal ... yumm Veneno - just refreshing and perfect Food: All of their corn (Maiz) is incredibly tasty (chips, tostadas, tortillas) so be sure to get dishes that come with some sort of Maiz! What I've tried so far (will update accordingly): - Carne asada is unreal and totally a must get ... comes with their perfect tortillas - Duck tostada is a beautifully presented duck, mole, and white sauce served on a cloud (I mean a tostada) - Elote risotto put such a unique spin on Mexican corn. Added this to my carne asada tacos to elevate that dish even more. But it's also delish alone. - Duck chilaquiles (brunch) - omfg these were dope - Tamales (lunch) - moist and perfection. Literally one of my favorites ever. Decor: It's absolutely gorgeous inside. Colorful, fun, and just an overall welcoming place. Everything from the walls, to plant pots, to plates, and signage are all vibrant and joyous. Service: You will likely come in here having a lot of questions. Everyone was so sweet and ready to help help describe everything to guide in your critical decision making process. The first time I came here I was with a tour group led by a local sous chef and he said this was one of his favorite places. We'd been starving ourselves before we started the tour and this was the first location, so everything tasted delicious before we rushed out the door to hit the next locale. We returned a couple of days ago to sit down and have a meal without the rush and this time, it was just okay. We got tamales, which is the food we got during the tour and we remembered it being better than it was this time around. We got lucky too because we got the last tamale of the night. We tried the flan and the arroz con leche. The flan was a little too cakey and less creamy. My sister, who had never had arroz con leche, said it was refreshing. The poor guy who served us was working the place all by himself, so even though it was a slow night, he was flustered trying to fire out food while also going to each table to take orders. When a guy is having to work alone, the restaurant should allow him to take orders at the cash register and he should be able to call out table numbers so people can pick up, so he doesn't have to run back and forth between the kitchen and the tables. That's not his fault, so help the guy out, management. He was nice and we made sure to tell him everything we wanted up front so he didn't have to return after he brought out the food. In spite of all of that, we enjoyed the chill, not too busy vibe. read more

We loved our meal here. The server was super friendly and helpful :) we all really enjoyed our food and it was almost too much to finished but we were famished after a day of walking around dt. This is more authentic Mexican food than you might be used to be I absolutely love the fresh tortillas and corn based dishes. They said that Their dishes aren't from one part of Mexico but a combination of all the different regions. I really enjoyed the catch of the day and the margarita and guac. Guys thought their carne asada was pretty good and mom liked the mole too! Would love to come back and try more items, the interior is bright clean festive and still modern. My family and I stopped in Maiz Molino yesterday after being turned away from another eatery that didn't have any openings and I must say....what a perfect blessing in disguise... I am born and raised in Los Angeles aka I've grown up eating the best Mexican food you can get without actually being in Mexico.....until Maiz Molino. We walked in and I will say the atmosphere of the restaurant didn't exactly match the food pictures I saw on Yelp so at first I was a little bit apprehensive, but then....we met our server Matt who was so kind and patient walking us through the menu and telling us about their approach to Mexican food. We were there around brunch time, but asked if there was anything else we'd be able to order off the brunch menu and Matt was so awesome and asked the chefs what they had in the back that we could order that wasn't on the brunch menu....I got the chicken tinga that wasn't on the brunch menu and let me tell you...... Maiz Molino served me the BEST chilaquiles I have EVER had....by FAR!! The Sauce?...incredible! Tangy and sweet and just enough heat. The chips? PERFECTLY wet on the outside and still crisp on the inside. The egg? PERFECTLY fried with a runny yolk. The tinga? AMAZING! The chicken fell apart and was smoky and tangy from the sauce. My mother in law got the Pozole.....not surprisingly the best pozole ive ever had also. It was thick and rich with tons of flavor and the meat just melted in your mouth. Everyone elses dishes were incredible and you MUST get the horchata latte. I got it iced and everyone else got it hot. We all loved it. My only issue with this place is there isn't one in Los Angeles and now I have to wait until my next trip to Seattle to have it again which I am very sad about.
