This is a lunchtime review, and doesn't really have anything to do with coming in here for drinks late night. I can't comment on the margaritas or the atmosphere at that point, but it sounds like the evenings are always packed, even though this isn't really the kind of place you plan to go hang out at--it's the kind of place you end up when the evening takes you there.
Anyway, this is about the lunch. The lunch is fine, and the prices are reasonable. When you originally make plans to go somewhere else that turns out not to be serving lunch, it will do in a pinch. That's kinda what happened here...so, even in daylight hours, it's not a place you plan to visit, it's a place you end up.
The joint was pretty much empty at straight-up noon, so you know they're not known for their lunch. It's humongous, too, and definitely open, definitely staffed. In fact, the only other table occupied seemed to be employees coming in on their days off. The place is elaborately decorated without a doubt. Thousands upon thousands of subway tiles and mosaic tiles and earthenware tiles and who knows what other kinds of tiles pile up in every direction. The chandeliers look like gigantic wrought-iron street lights--and I do mean gigantic; they're the size of garbage cans, if not recycling bins. One good earthquake and each of them will decapitate two tables' worth of patrons.
All of these places (the Scottish one, German one, etc) are all decorated within an inch of their lives. This one has lots of open space, and two huge walls of full-height windows. Even on a relatively cloudy day, it almost makes you feel like you're sitting outside. There's a huge bar, and then there's a huge dining room, and they're packed with booths and tables, and you know there's no room to move in here on weekend nights. That's alright; the drinks are probably really good.
The food is just OK, though. I had the huarache, which, wittily enough, is a sandal-sized, sandal-shaped tortilla covered with grilled onions and skirt steak, with cilantro and some salsa. It was seasoned fairly well, not too awfully salty. I still added a ton of hot sauce, but that's me, not the food. They put a few gradients of hot sauce on the table in squeeze bottles. My friend had tacos, which she didn't finish, and soup, which she really barely started. We didn't go into detail about what she didn't like, but I kinda felt bad, since I picked the lunch spot (and be default picked this one as a Plan B). And we were mostly talking about her job hunt, so, in fairness to the kitchen, it might not have been the food that killed her appetite.
The service was pretty spotty. We had to flag him down for almost everything. The booths are so high here, and the place was so empty, that it's maybe no surprise--he couldn't really see us, and by rights he was more focused on sidework. But we had to wave to get water, refills, place orders, get the check, etc., and lunch took us an hour and a half as a result. We filled that whole time chatting, and the prices were fair, and clearly this place isn't focused on lunch, but, sheesh. read more
