Decided to stop in on a quick lunch break. There were plenty of tables to inside. I was pleasantly welcomed in by the cashier. She was very helpful in picking menu options. We decided on The Country Club and the Slamming Bacon cheeseburger. It was definitely cooked to order and truly didn't take too long to get to the table. The fries were well seasoned and perfectly crisp. The burger was good but the sandwich was amazing! It was even better than I imagined and huge. If you're ever near Birmingham's southside-Five Points area, you must stop by Pop's Neighborhood Grill! And if you're a fan of old 80s rock-n-roll or anime, you're in for a treat. The walls are lined with old pictures, posters, and flyers from musical acts who have crossed paths with the city of Birmingham. In addition, there are some pretty dope anime posters there as well. Pop's has a nostalgic feel, that retro fast food feel with some good 'ol southern charm behind the counter. The young woman behind the counter always has a smile and brings out your food when it is ready, and the men in the kitchen are WORKING WORKING! I didn't know what to expect when I entered with my gang of co-workers, but we all wanted something simple but good. I decided to try the hot dog this time around. I'm more of a boiled, or grilled hot dog type guy, so when my to-go box came out, I was surprised to see that my frank had been not only slightly split open lengthwise but also cooked on a flat grill. It sorta threw me off a bit, but I was hungry and didn't mind. I took a shot at Pop's Chicago Dog with mustard, onions, peppers, tomatoes, pickles, and a side of fries. I didn't know how the tomato would do with a hot dog, but it was very good. And if you're looking for an all-beef hot dog, they have them! Overall, the flavor profile of the hot dog with its toppings reminded me to make a mental note to "please come back again." The seating was pretty standard for a retro fast-food place. The seating area was clean, I mean nothing immaculate, but I wouldn't expect that here with the volume of customers; you come here for good quick food and a quick chat with other patrons waiting for their orders. Other than that, you could be a loner, stand up and stare out of the front windows, and watch traffic race up and down 20th St S from or to the Vulcan until your order is called. I'd think that the pandemic would have been a challenge for them because there wouldn't have been much they could have done in terms of social distancing, but I could see a "3-5 person maximum at a time for takeout orders only" scenario. Environmentally friendly as far as plateware, cups, and utensils? I ate at his spot today and it was really good. It is right around the corner from my office so a nice little walk. Upon entering, the outside looked clean. As I entered, very small place and several people inside eating. The young lady who took my order was very polite and really good at discussing the menu. Called in an order 20 minutes before I arrive got there in the order was not ready Ordered a BLT sandwich with extra mayo and that's all. Waited 15 minutes inside. 30 minute lunch gone. Customer asked female at the front counter to change her gloves. Bcus she in fact handled several debit cards, cash, the phone to take orders, and the grill utensils several times while I was standing there. This woman got a clean glove with the nasty gloves and just put the glove over the nasty ones. Omfg. I finally get my food and I have a scatter of greasy fries even though I didn't order them and my damn sandwich has ONE piece of burnt to crisp as bacon. $8 for one piece of damn bacon that I can't even bite through. I got the Pop's Hot Beef Special with fries and a sweet tea. My wife got the Slaw Dog with fries and a coke. Both were fantastic. The hot dogs were juicy and the fries were cooked perfectly. The service was excellent as always. The girl at the counter is always fast and friendly. She has the best personality. The food came out quick and she served it to our table instead of us having to pick it up. The vibe is so cool here. They have great retro memorabilia and autographed comics and artwork. It's always such a fun experience. The price might be high for some for a hot dog, but I feel like the experience and service definitely make it worth it. I did not see any COVID protocols in place. I had a craving for a BLT and chose to order from Pop's. Looked at the menu and there are 2 types of BLT: $5.49 Breakfast BLT(no description) and $9.99 Pop's Bacon BLT (Hunk of Bacon, Lettuce, Tomatoes). Since I wanted a hefty portion of bacon on my sandwich, I opted to to order $9.99 Pop's Bacon BLT with chips. I receive my order and I am ready to dig in. To my disappointment, my sandwich had 3 little slices of overcooked bacon. I was crushed but I proceeded to eat it. it was bad. The tomatoes weren't fresh, wilted lettuce and crumbly toasted bread. So because I was so uneasy with the sandwich, I called to get clarification on what I ordered/paid for and what I received. The employee that answered the call was rude. I explained to her what I ordered and expected. She then tells me that the sandwich only comes with 3 strips of bacon. So I ask her to explain the difference in the Breakfast BLT and Pop's Bacon BLT. She tells me the only difference is the Breakfast BLT doesn't come with chips. So I am extra confused now. The description of the Pop's Bacon BLT states a hunk a bacon and that's not the case. The employee let me know that 3 strips is the max on the hunk of bacon blt. I asked her what the additional $4 was for and she stated the chips. The chips are listed on the menu for $1.99 a la cart. She concluding the conversation as she was too busy to be bothered by saying she will change the menu to reflect 3 strips of bacon for the sandwich. So far, we've tried eggs, omelets, bacon, pancakes, French toast, hashbrowns, and grits. (Different visits.) Every time, the food has been spectacular. The eggs are always cooked exactly right, the bacon is perfect, and the French toast is delicious. The sweet tea is always fantastic. The best thing of all is the customer service though. I came to Pops with two friends on a recommendation. I was told that Pops had great burgers. You may not know me, but burgers are one of my weaknesses. So, I rushed over at the first opportunity. There isn't much seating in the restaurant, but it wasn't very crowded at the time we went. The place looks like it's been there a while. They don't seem too concerned with decor, but that doesn't bother me. Show me the burger. I ordered an original with a side of fries. One of my buddies did the same while the last got a couple hotdogs. The food came out and I became excited. The burger is a good size and the fries looked crispy and good. The burger tasted great. The bun wasn't my favorite, but it didn't distract from the meat. I'd get one again; however, I think I'd get bacon and cheese next time. The bacon looked like it would have been an amazing addition. My friend thought the hotdogs were ok. He wished he got what we got. I hear that others rave about them...but I'd probably just stick with burgers. I'll be back. What the hell was I thinking? I've driven past this place zillions of times, never suspecting the loving goodness that waited inside for me. Yeah, it was a cheeseburger and fries. That's it. A lousy cheeseburger. And it took ten minutes to arrive at my table. But OMG, little did I realize that cheeseburger had been made with perfectionist hands. I mean, it was done with such care, such devotion, that they might have used calipers to ensure the lettuce was placed just so on the pattie. Mind you, if I had to compare this cheeseburger to Chez Fon Fon's, Frank Stitt's creation would win. But Frank Stitt would charge me a heckuva lot more. And the fries? Somewhere in Idaho, there's a potato farmer giving up agriculture forever because he will never, ever produce a potato that makes such sterling french fries ever again. All in all, a rapturous experience with a damned cheeseburger. Heck, maybe I was just really hungry. Maybe I just got there on the right day, when the chemistry, the conditions were just ideal. I dunno. But it definitely deserves scientific study in the form of about about two dozen more visits to be absolutely sure. read more

I've been excited to try this place for a while and walked away extremely disappointed. I placed a pickup order through UberEats for a bacon cheese burger and lemon pepper wings. I received a notification saying the food was ready, but when I arrived they said there was a mistake because the food is not ready and they are out of wings. No problem, mistakes happen -- they let me sub the wings with chicken tenders, and assured me it would only be a few more minutes. I ended up waiting another half hour, which made for an already rough start, but I will not knock them for that. This has nothing to do with the rating I am giving but thought it worth noting. I finally received my food. I started with the chicken tenders I had subbed in. They were hot and definitely fresh. The fries that came with it were crinkle cut and seasoned perfectly. However, the chicken was so dry and tough that it would've been hard for even a knife to cut through it. Of my 4 chicken tenders I only successfully ate 1, because they were so dry and flavorless that I couldn't even begin to enjoy them. 2 stars on the tenders. I moved to my burger. The buns were soft, and overall the burger was moist and packed full of ingredients to make a massive bacon cheeseburger. However the ingredients themselves were lacking -- flavorless pickles, tough bacon. But what really made the burger fall flat was the lack of seasoning, condiments, and overall flavor. While moist and edible, much better than the tenders, the burger lacked flavor and I couldn't bring myself to finish this dish either. 3 stars simply for being edible when the tenders were legitimately not. Overall, I was disappointed. Maybe it was a rough day, but I do not plan to return. read more

I ordered the Pop's Famous Dog, it was really good! I would not normally order something with so many toppings, but I really wanted the full experience and I assumed its called "famous" for a reason. While the hotdog was really messy, it was delicious and I will definitely be back for another one. I liked the vibe of the restaurant and the decor, it was also pretty clean inside. The workers were all wearing masks and gloves and they sanitized the tables after people left. I ordered my food to-go and it came in a styrofoam container, they could use more sustainable materials. This was my first time trying Pop's Neighborhood Grill. I got the chili dog with cheese and an order of fries. The food was all fresh and you can't beat the prices! I did have to wait a little bit for my food to be ready, but they had seating for customers while they waited. I did notice employees were wearing gloves and masks appropriately - but there were customers waiting for their food who did not have masks on. For such a small area inside, I would have hoped the employees would make sure everyone was wearing masks. Pop's could do a better job as for as sustainability goes since their food comes in a styrofoam box and plastic bag. read more

Hot dog! I most recently patronized Pop's at their stand at Pepper Place Market. I ordered the Polish Dog which is layered with luscious peppers, onions, and mustard on a giant Polish sausage! Very messy, but hey! All the best food is. I have also had the Vulcan from the brick and mortar. It is similar to a Philly Cheesesteak. I went to Pop's Neighborhood grill after work today, I had been there before but only for their breakfast. They have a section for hot dogs with all different types of toppings. I got the Pop's chili dog and it was amazing, normally I don't like chili dogs but they had the best ones. I used to work in 5 points so I used to go get breakfast from Pop's all the time and they have the best breakfast and the food there is very inexpensive. I received my food very quickly and it was very fresh. The workers were wearing masks and customers were also required to wear a mask. I would say the only critique I have was that the food was a bit greasy, but that is to be expected with hot dogs and burgers. read more

I've been feeling under the weather and haven't felt like cooking. I've been meaning to try Pop's for a while so calling in a breakfast order seemed like a good idea. I called in an order for two pancakes, bacon and hashbrowns. My order was waiting for me when I got there and the cashier was very nice. She greeted me as soon as I entered and checked to see if everything was correct. I was astonished at how large the pancakes were! I should have just ordered one instead of two. The three pieces of bacon were thick and crispy just like I like them and the side of hasbrowns was huge as well. The pancakes were so fluffy! I was only able to eat one so I'm hoping that they're reheat well tomorrow morning. Everything was so good and really gave you that "diner" feel. I work close by, so me and the co workers eat here on most Fridays. This place is a hit or miss to me. I have my two staple orders. The chicken finger plate or the hot wing plate. The chicken tenders are huge, I get the order of 4 and can only finish 2. As for the hot wings go, my last order of wings tasted like a salt lick! I got the lemon pepper hot wings, the wings were so hot I couldn't even eat it. The were type of hot that burns your lips and make your nose run. (Not very cute at work lol) I feel like I have a high tolerance for spicy food too, my coworkers also agreed that they were too spicy to be enjoyed as well. But the wings are big and you can get 10 piece and fries for like 7 bucks. With all that said, I still order from here. Cheap filling food for those junk food Friday's at work. My husband had the bacon slaw dog and it's probably one of the best things I've had in Bham. After trying it at Pepper Place we went to their location and tried it again. It's so delicious! Man, yet another place that the community has hyped up and I've been disappointed by. I'm sure there's a social term for being influenced by the opinion of those before you. Unless this was just a weird anomaly of a night, km convinced that's where all these high reviews came from. First star comes from price, second star... Service. The buck stops there. Burger visually looked to be seasoned well but tasted very standard/average/normal. Fries were just ok as well. I actually ordered chili cheese fries, which I didn't get thru half of before my appetite was completely ruined. Ruined by a fry having some very very odd and non edible flavor of something very chemically. Was it a burnt flavor... No, was it overcooked, no... It didn't taste like food at all. Unfortunately I had to spit this in my napkin, drink some drink and leave. Can't say that my experience here will allow me to ever want to go back.
