Update: 2012-12-09: visited 2nd time... and it was very consistent to my previous experience. Dishes were the same great taste. Consistent with previous visit, the salt in my dish was less... no biggie as I added it after the fact. I mentioned that to the waiter who promptly relayed it to the chef and the chef said that they would look into it. We had Chicken Vindaloo... as mentioned in the menu, it was spicy and great taste. Just a note, the amount of rice that the dish came with was less quantity. Ordered to-go for lunch (both Indian items): Potato and Onion Bhajias Traditional Chicken Curry entree Considering that all of the waiters that I noticed were non-Indian, the items were amazing. They were authentic to a large extent. The chutneys (coconut with the bhajias) and peanut-based chutney with the entree were amazing. The only gripe was with the chicken curry, it wasn't as spicy as expected... also it lacked some salt... we added it while eating and it had true Indian taste. Was just disappointment they ran out of my first choice greek items like Kotta Pitta and Kotta Psiti (both are actually under lunch menu). Overall a happy customer. read more

Enjoyable experience here on a recent Friday night! Felt a little like being in NYC. Packed house with great ambience. Waitress was accommodating to my vegan friend and me. She exchanged the butter for olive oil with the bread that came with the meal. We had a couple of appetizers sharing the grape leaves and Greek olives. Both were quite good! Excellent piano playing by Chris who plays here every Friday and be sure to show your gratitude of him making the piano proud by putting some tips in his tip jar. Appreciated the special menu showing what contained dairy, gluten, and nuts. Would be even better to have a menu that shows what is vegan and vegetarian. Would have liked to have Chris the piano player be moved more toward the center of the room as opposed to playing in the back. I think his piano playing would add to the experience and diners would be better able to hear him. Will definitely be back to try some of the entrees and of course to hear Chris play the piano some more. read more

One of my favorite restaurants. It's been around for years for a reason. I've been going here since I was in college and now I get to take my kids. The staff is great. Even when they are crowded, the staff is friendly. They act happy to see my kids rather then inconvenienced. They always bring them a fruit plate and last time the waitress picked my daughter up to give her a hug. Food is always good. I've tried many things over the years and haven't had anything I didn't like yet. Kids get spanakopita every time, but they like it every time. Good wine choices and if you don't know anything about wine like us, they can help. Took my boss here who is Greek and grew up in a restaurant family and he loves it too. I wound up at Poppi's after a night at the movies in Eugene quite often when I lived there. I would even skip popcorn to do it! I really like the quirky Indian/Greek menu. It's so Eugene. I recommend these delicious plates: Saganaki - fried sheep's milk cheese drizzled with lemon for a sizzling effect Potato & Onion Bhajias - garbanzo fritters with coconut chutney Yiros Pita Sandwich - beef, lamb, tzatziki goodness Vindaloo Chicken Curry - VERY SPICY! But all curries come with a four chutneys Sag Bhaji - Spinach curry with chutneys Kotta Psiti - Greek roasted chicken, always cooked perfectly, seasoned well, meat falls off the bone! The best thing I've ever eaten here was a daily special: a pie made with filo dough, feta, spinach, and eggplant with roasted potatoes and a tomato/cabbage side. Everything on this plate was AMAZING! Try a glass of their Retsina (pine wine). It's my partner's go to drink here! Also try their Greek coffee: omg SO good! But don't drink it all down because very fine coffee grounds sit at the bottom of the cup. They offer different levels of sweetness for this tiny cup, a delicious way to end your meal here. This was our first time eating at Pappi's and wow did we love it. They had THE best hummus I've ever tasted. It was served warm with slightly toasted pita bread. DELISH!! For my entree, Kai recommended the special, which was a philo-filled chicken pot pie of bliss. I topped that with some of their heavenly-hummus. Amazing. I think Pappi's hummus would complete any meal. I can't wait to come back to Eugene and when I do....Pappi's will be a must visit place every time. Came upon this restaurant from a google search for ethnic restaurants. PERFECT! The spanikopita was sensational as a lunch entree. My husband had the mango lassi and the Bombay Aloo both of which he said were good, but not great, but we will definitely go back to enjoy this charming spot with super genuine wait staff. We found it kind of odd at first that the restaurant served both Greek and Indian food at the same time. We thought to play it safe and just order the gyro sandwhiches. I have never seen more meat stuffed into a gyro as this time, we were both overwhelmed and enjoyed the meat-filled gyros and we were so full after! We had high hopes for this restaurant because it had a cute ambiance, was absolutely packed and when presented with the appetizers thought it was a great choice (the dolmas are delicious) so we were excited for the rest of our dinner. We ignored the sour demeanor of the first server. She would not engage when asked about what olive oil they used and she had a bit of attitude when we asked for water... she went to other tables that were seated after us. Then after a 50-minute wait she presented us with the food and INSISTED that we ordered something we had not... despite the fact we all said it was not ordered... to be fair, she offered to fix the issue, but after a 50 minute wait everyone was hungry and impatient. What happened to the customer being always right? It would have been one thing if she had said she will get it fixed, but her insistence on our order was something we never experienced in the food service industry before. We were then given another server who was absolutely GREAT! Unfortunately, the entire 'dining out' experience was ruined by the first server who has ABSOLUTELY NO business being in customer service. read more

My partner and I were excited to try this place but we were a bit disappointed about the service. The hummus and calamari were absolutely delicious and the drinks were good but the service was very slow. We finished our drinks relatively quickly and were never checked on by the staff until our meal was almost finished. We were hoping to get more than one drink but never had the opportunity to ask for anything, as our waitress was too busy to stop by and ask. even when she dropped off our dinner, she quickly left without a word. The rice was small portioned and a little undercooked, and my entree came with rice instead of potatoes like it was listed on the menu. because of slow service we were apprehensive to ask for dessert, but we did anyway -- and it took another 10 minutes for her to bring by the dessert tray for us to choose from. by then we were ready to leave and no longer wanted dessert. Unsure if this is normal for the service here, since this was our first time, or if they're just understaffed. read more

After being sick for about a week, and having no appetite whatsoever, I finally decided that some yummy spicy Indian food would do me some good. I had no energy, so Husband decided to take me out to this place since he found it interesting with good reviews and it was something new we've never tried. I thought it being a combination of Greek and Indian was a bit different, but what the heck...lets no judge. We got seated, got our water and ordered chicken vindaloo and the curry. My husband ordered a chapati as well since they didn't have naan...okay! If there's Indian food, there HAS to be naan! But that's okay, he got the chapati...which was just a wheat tortilla that looked like it got thrown on a warmer and brought to us, after one little bite the dang thing got hard. Now, it was my turn to take a bit from this vindaloo that smelled DEVINE, but the chicken pieces were HUGE...that's okay more meat for me! First bite...YUCK! My first thought was, are they trying to poison me? I'm already dying and this is the first meal I wanted after about a week of not eating well. The chicken and the sauce was so bitter! And it tasted nothing like curry! And the potatoes were still RAW. I was so very disappointed! Also, we had asked them to make it as spicy as they could, but their reply was...we can't, it's already spiced. Maybe it being pre spiced it what caused the bitterness? And the chutneys...what do I eat with the chutneys? It didn't come with anything. Am I supposed to eat my curry with chutneys? And might I say, they did NOT taste good at all. The garlic peanut one almost made me throw up, the only one that was a little edible was the cachcumber...but like I said...there was nothing to eat chutneys with. I don't know, but I'm probably not going to come back here again. I feel they brought my sickness back with the food. Next time, I'll take my chances at another place. read more

No, this conversation never took place and never will on earth. What the hell -- Greek and Indian? Whatever, I'll give it a shot it has 4 stars on yelp. So I get seated and I feel like my chair is going to drop my fat azz on the floor. The thing was wobbling and I sat very intently not to make a spectacle. I think the owner thought the same thing as we both awkwardly looked up at each other as she stared deep into my soul the entire dinner. Every group was probably over the age of 50 here...besides me, my bad. Gyro plate was alright just a typical gyro I can find anywhere in town. But get this, they charge twice as much as an Albees to throw half a tomatoes and an eighth of a cucumber with some oil and vinegar to make a salad for the low price of 15$. And no I refuse to say "yiro!" Chicken Korma curry sounded great on the menu. Thing showed up as a full piece of chicken breast with all the rib bones and spine still attached. I think I needed to take a class to eat this shiz. I thought I picked off every bone through the murky sauce that covered it but then I bite in and what do you know, a Damn bone. Straight to the gums. I swear I took roughly 30 bites and I'd say 15 of them had part of the broken spinal cord. O yeah, after trying to get through this corn maze of broken bones the shiz was dry! Sauce was good, and thank heaven the rice was cooked well, I may have killed myself right there. Ok, yeah, maybe going a little hard here, but I was pissed. The chicken won. It drew blood on my gums. I ate here once years ago and in spite of not liking it then, gave it another try recently. Here are my findings: Pros: - Cute restaurant, great location - Choice of two cuisines - Next door to a theater Cons: - The food tastes basically like something a friend made at a home. A hippie friend who isn't a terribly good cook and is used to cooking for an entire commune at once. - This place really only does well in Eugene Weekly's "Top 3" lists each year because there simply aren't more Indian and Greek restaurants in town. (though I guess two new Indian places have opened up in the last two or three years, so maybe Poppi's will fall from the Top 3 now) The food here is not disgusting, but it's not my idea of good food. The thought of going there again is like the thought of being invited for dinner again by a friend who can't cook well. You want to like it, you feel like you SHOULD like it, but really you're just wishing you'd stayed home and cooked your own food or gone out to dinner somewhere else. read more

From the moment we walked through the door of this charming little place, I was in love. We showed up around 8pm on a Saturday night and I was glad to see it wasn't crowded, but secretly hoped that wouldn't be indicative of poor food/service. Our table was a romantic little seating for two with a darling mini bouquet of flowers and a tiny purple tea candle. The lighting was low and the room was filled with soft background noise. Very cozy and relaxing! We were quickly greeted by our server who covered specials, brought us complimentary bread & butter and offered a wine suggestion. My partner ordered the gyros and loved them! I ordered the Gharides Saganaki and thought it was to die for! Amazing! I generally don't do dessert, but I was so impressed with our main course that I insisted on sharing a piece of baklava and enjoying a cup of coffee; I'm SO glad I did! Everything tasted so good! I've lived in Eugene for 6 years and this is definitely the worst meal I have had here. The "lamb special" was ridiculously chewy and inedible, everything else just tasted wrong - there's no better way to describe it. We complained about both our meals and were still expected to pay full price. I'm $25 poorer and still hungry. Side note: As I was on a date I didn't want to create a scene in the restaurant. As we are huge Greek AND Indian food fans, we decided to try Poppi's Anatolia while passing through at dinner time. From the street it looks like a little hole in the wall place, and the sign is somewhat hidden by trees, so it is easy to miss. Inside was a nice little restaurant space that was inviting, but not "welcome to our home!" inviting that a lot of Greek places tend to be. An eclectic collection of music was playing softly adding to the ambiance. Upon being seated you're served a couple pieces of bread as an little appetizer. While it looked good, it was overpoweringly laden with fennel. Dinner choices were: Potato and onion bhajias Chicken curry special Thali plate (vegetarian dishes) Baklava and Ninkasi IPA The bhajias kind of set the tone for the meal. First, these are not typical bhajias, veggies covered in garbonzo flour, and deep fried. They were actually compacted cakes of potatoes, onions, and jalapeños, covered in garbonzo flour and deep fried. The jalapeños were a pleasant surprise for me, but I could see some people not enjoying that. The coconut chutney was OK, but less of a chutney and more a pile of spiced shredded coconut. It really didn't mesh flavor wise with the bhajias and seemed to be something more along the lines of "something different for the sake of being different." The chicken curry was very bland. There was barely any curry flavor at all. The chicken in the dish was rather dry considering it was surrounded by a thick sauce and plenty of vegetables. The other distracting thing is that the dish had a lot of broccoli in it, and not just small pieces, but huge pieces that were sometimes bigger than the chicken pieces. But over all for being a curry, it just wasn't as flavorful as I was expecting. The Basamati rice served on the side was very good though. It soaked up the flavors of the dish above and amplified them a little. The Thali plate was a little better, but still fell short in a lot of ways. The spinach portion tasted like it was unseasoned. The Bindi Bhaji was spicy but unflavored, while the Bombay Aloo was slightly spicier, but devoid of just as much flavor. All of this was served with a side of plain, Greek Yogurt. Both these meals were served with small bowls of four different types of chutneys. There was a tomato chutney and pineapple chutney, both of which seemed to just be diced and unseasoned. There was a peanut based chutney that tasted a lot like a Thai Peanut sauce. And the fourth, I don't even remember because it was so bland. Now, if there is one desert weakness I have, it is a well made baklava. The version served here was passable, but nothing I'd go out of my way for. The phyllo dough was crispy and fell off the top easily instead of being moist. It was hard to cut with a fork, there wasn't enough honey in the recipe, and the filling was hard and dry. I really wanted to love Poppi's Anatolia. Perhaps I was expecting too much based on other reviews here, and the concept of mixing Greek and Indian flavors intrigued me. But there is a right way to mix flavors, and a wrong way. Poppi's definitely went the wrong way. My best guess is that they muted the Indian flavors to keep from overpowering the Greek. But instead of mixing together, the food just seems to lay there. read more

Spanakopita was fantastic. The mango lassie was more yogurts and less sugary than many I have had. The restaurant was homey and comfortable. The appetizers were all fantastic. The pita bread was warm and tasty. The hummus was garlicky but very good. The surprise was the feta cheese. Wow. Very mild and very good. Recommended. Parking is difficult but they validate for the public parking garage around the corner and parking was free. read more

One word describes my experiences here above all others: CONSISTENT. I docked one star only because the Indian dishes are very good, but not as good as say Evergreen. Unlike Evergreen, however, the service is better. The food is fresh, delicious, and is the same every time I order it. I saw someone complain that portions are small, but the metal dishes you get the rice and entree in honestly look smaller than they are. I always have left-overs. The service is always good. Even when the restaurant is busy, our servers are always prompt. You get a carafe of water, so even when it's busy you never go thirsty. ...also, you don't have to bus your own tables!!! The Greek food is outstanding. I've never had a gyro as good as this one. The saganaki, although never set on actual fire () is delicious. I highly recommend to anyone who hasn't been there to try it. It's a great restaurant when you have a partner who you and them have trouble pinning down what to eat. Have your almond brandy cake and eat it too (whatever that saying even means)! read more

First of all, I usually only visit 4.5 star restaurants and higher when I travel, and I we gave this place a visit since it's the highest ranking Greek place in Eugene. Now, after a three day trip eating at restaurants for lunch and dinner in Eugene- this place was the BEST we've eaten at! Everything tastes just how you imagine it. Very seasoned and Greek! There's a fair amount of ambivalence about this place in the other reviews but you're not going to find it here. I think this place is a gem. It's in an area of town (i.e. between the bus station and Kesey Square) that I normally walk by very briskly with my head down, so I never would have known about this place if not for the internets. I'm very glad I've tried it now. Note that I've never tried the Indian food and I treat it mostly like a Greek place. The atmosphere is quite a bit more subdued than you'll find most other places in Eugene. It feels older. My girlfriend and I, in our mid-20s, are usually the youngest people in the whole place. It's small and the tables are close together but even when it's full I haven't found it particularly loud. I've never had anything but perfectly attentive service and good food. They are unafraid to use cheese in their dishes which advertise cheese, and for that they will always have my blessing. I've sampled most of their saganakis at this point and liked them, especially the gharides, but that might just be because anything with shrimp in it turns me into a happy drooling idiot. The appetizers are all dope. The prices are fair ... if you want to get multiple courses and wine and sit there for hours like a real Greek person, you'll spend upwards of $35/person, but I've also been in for just single entree and a drink for $15-20 and been equally as satisfied. I really have no complaints about this place. My girlfriend and I go here every now and then when we are feeling Epicurean and want a tasty meal and want to sit and talk and not be surrounded by people whose main object is their own conspicuousness. I have lived in Eugene long enough to remember the original Poppi's (yes even the grill house)! I am a fan! Very down-to-earth and comfortable place...with *fantastic* food. I'll admit though, I go there for a few very specific things: greek salad, saganaki, and retsina. Really fresh, original tastes which...along with the awesome bread...make for a very satisfying meal. Especially the saganaki which comes out to you still bubling hot in a metal dish. Then the server squeezes half a lemon on it at your table so it makes this huge WHOOOOOSH! sound and totally steams up the place. I am giving it a 4 though, just because I haven't tried a lot on their menu. Though, for me I don't care that much about the food. I have a special place in my heart for Poppi's, but that might just be my love for fried cheese. I've lived in Eugene for so long that I can't remember what is authentic but their saginaki is delicious regardless. I love the banged up little cast iron pan, I love the pool of olive oil and lemon and love the hearty loaf of rye bread they give us. The yiro plate was solid, and the shrimp dish (with more sheep cheese) was tasty. Somehow their lemony side of cabbage was the best thing I'd ever eaten, or it could've been the generous pours of cheap $4 vino influencing my mood last night. Here are the minimum requirements for adequate restaurant service: 1. Make me feel important to you. 2. Do things in roughly the right order. 3. Don't disappear. 4. If you screw up, acknowledge it gracefully and make it right somehow. Unfortunately, my initial experience at Poppi's failed on each point. We weren't asked for a drink order, so we had to make it. We got talked into, and excited about the calamari, which we ordered but it never came - no apology or offer to make it right when we pointed that out. Food was decent, but nothing special. It was a Monday night, so maybe they don't play their A team, but there were maybe five tables, nothing more than a 2-top except for our foursome, and it was sort of a special occasion to boot. The dal here, spiced simply with mustard seeds and crisp-fried onions, is a revelation, more delicate and subtle than any I've had--it's warm comfort food. So glad The Picky Family found Poppies! Mr. Picky gasped when he saw Taramasalada listed in the menu. One of our absolute favorites which we enjoyed with pita. The yiros/gyros were excellent.
