So glad The Picky Family found Poppies! Mr. Picky gasped when he saw Taramasalada listed in the menu. One of our absolute favorites which we enjoyed with pita. The yiros/gyros were excellent. This told us that the rest of the items in the extensive menu will all be fabulous. We'll return in a couple of weeks to try something exotic. I'm giving Poppi's 2 stars, but I'd really like to rate them 2.5. Poppi's Anatolia is a Greek / Indian place in downtown Eugene. It's not too pricey and has a good (but not stellar) selection of dishes from both countries. The service is fine and the ambience, while a little claustrophobic sometimes, doesn't distract from the meal. Here's the problem: the food at Poppi's is really hit-and-miss. When it's good, it's pretty good. 4 stars good. When it's bad, as it was the other evening when we visited, the food is bland and rather tasteless. We suspect that some nights the main chef leaves the kitchen to his inexperienced underlings--the dramatic difference in quality is hard to otherwise understand. So two stars it is, because the quality of the food is so unpredictable. Too bad, since this sort of food is pretty hard to come by in Eugene. read more

We went here on a Wednesday night, when they serve both Greek and Indian food (Sunday is the Greek-only menu.) We got the meze platter as an appetizer and I ordered a vindaloo chicken curry as my main course. In the meze platter we had dolmas, hummus and artichoke hearts. The dolmas are excellent - just like my mom makes - and the hummus was satisfyingly garlicky. The vindaloo was nice and spicy. It might be too hot for non-chiliheads. One nice thing about the dish is that the peppers in it were cooked long enough that they did not irritate my stomach (the skin on dried chilis don't play nicely with my digestive tract if I eat too much.) I probably gobbled down 10-12 chilis that were in the curry and felt totally fine the next day. I also sampled my dad's psari marinato (marinated fish.) He ordered it hot and it had a nice light herby flavor from the rosemary and thyme. It very much reminded me of the fish I had when I visited Greece. For dessert I had rice pudding, which was the perfect finish to the hot curry. It was super thick and satisfying. Overall a great dinner. read more

Poppi's Anatolia is an unobjectionable restaurant in the "heart" of Eugene. This is not the highest of praise. In fact, what I remember most about my meal there last week is the restaurant's bizarre lighting. To me, it was like spending 90 minutes in an interrogation chamber with my party. The meze were better than the entrees. The grape leaves and Greek salad, in particular, were fine. The artichokes, however, gave notice of the fascination with liberal use of oil that was in heavy evidence at Poppi's. The shrimp saganaki had a nice taste, but no person could wish his doctor to know that he'd consumed a meal swimming in such a bath of oil. A lighter touch would have made this a truly winning dish. I felt no qualms about missing dessert. We opted instead for Prince Puckler's. read more

Loved this place! We walked here from the Hilton and I am glad we decided to come here. Smaller restaurant and it feels more homely. Food takes a long time to cook but at least we know it is fresh and has good quality. They had some Fennel bread at the table, it was pretty heavy and tasted pretty good. I started off with the Dolmadakia (stuffed grape leaves) and they were great. I squirted a little bit of lemon juice over the top and enjoyed. They weren't big pieces but there were plenty to go around. For my main meal I got the Kotta Psiti. Excellent! It is a Roasted Chicken with spices on it. This is almost a half of chicken, and you have to get your hands dirty, it is still bone on. This chicken tasted very good, it was moist and perfect. The chicken bones were soft and could be eaten. No I didn't eat the bones, but they were great. I opted for 2 servings of vegetables instead of the potatoes. The vegetables were very tasty and perfect, I thought about ordering a second serving! I had peppermint tea with my meal, and they brought out a whole bowl of honey. Not sure if it was a special honey, but it seemed to taste different but very good. read more

My review can only speak of the many gyros I have and will eat at Poppi's Anatolia. I could probably eat gryos every day and never grow tired of them. That being said, Poppi's makes one delicious and well-priced gyro. The meat has always been very tender and topped with a generous amount of tzatziki dressing. I did take off a star because I prefer all lamb gyros, and Poppi's makes it with a combination of beef and lamb. The whole-wheat pita is always delicious and fresh- it tastes like it's home made (though I don't know that it is). It's completed with fresh tomatos, onion, parsley, and a pepperoncini. I'm always delightfully full after eating, and at $6.25 for a great meal, I'm becoming a regular. Maybe I'll update this post if I can ever bring myself to ordering anything else! Staff has always been very nice and helpful as well. I've never waited more than eight minutes for my food. You can also order off the lunch menu during dinner hours. My only suggestion to them would be to turn on some A.C. It's probably due to the open kitchen and grill just behind the register, but it's always been uncomfortably warm inside. Due to the sort of cramped interior, it'll make you sweat if you sit in there long enough. read more

I recently ate here with my brother. We both had really good sandwiches, and I had a dessert to die for - some kind of almond cake.

Wouldn't you know it, I was craving both Indian and Greek food! I got my husband to tag along and have a nice little date night (rare indeed) and after reading reviews on here we thought we'd try Poppi's. We were warmly greeted and took a seat in the front at one of the windows. We went in the evening so it was fun to see Eugene at night. The service was impeccable. We ordered the Thatki Platter and the Spanakopita along with a serving of Poppadoms as an appetizer. My husband and I eat family style so we are able to try everything. This was a mighty vegetarian feast which I was in true need of that day! I enjoyed everything, although the Daal was a bit blander than what I am used to. The portions were appropriate, the prices were right and the food was well prepared and fresh. It would have been nice to have larger bread portions, perhaps of homemade Naan, we didn't like the pita as it seemed store bought. The best was the Baklava. I know how to make some wonderful authentic baklava and it's really hard to find locally (unless an Arabic friend, etc. makes it) they had it nailed! So delicious! Try for yourself! read more

My wife and I have eaten here frequently over the past 5 years. We hadn't been for 4+ months because the quality was slipping. Well something changed because on our latest visit the quality and taste was really good. We will certainly be adding Poppi's back to our most visited restaurant list. We noticed the cook was different and we didn't recognize any of the staff. So there has certainly been turnover. I love the combination of Greek and Indian food. Also the bread is top notch, we always end up eating the entire piece. My wife always orders from the Indian section and about 90% of the time it is the Thali platter. The curry and chutney is fantastic. I on the other hand order something different each time. This time it was the Pathia Prawns. The curry was nice and hot which is balanced with the sweetness of the pineapple. A very Eugene place, quirky and fun. read more

I'm surprised that other reviewers on yelp didn't like the atmosphere of Poppi's Anatolia; the ambiance is one of my favorite things about this restaurant. While I am no connoisseur of gourmet food, I find the food at Poppi's excellent. The mix of Greek and Indian food is interesting. The vegetarian Thalia plate is wonderful because of its variety. And each sample was impeccable and rich with flavor. Unfortunately, I wasn't too impressed with the retsina. I'm open to trying new kinds of wine, especially, but the retsina was too reminiscent of Pine Sol. I've also had the chicken pita sandwich for lunch, which was fairly priced. The chicken meat was tender and moist, but without the tzatiki sauce, was bland. I enjoyed the almond brandy cake also, but the sheet of firm chocolate on top wasn't too desirable. However, the cake itself, though crumbly, was tasty enough, especially with the syrupy brandy, and it had a hint of sweetness. read more

I gotta say, Poppi's has some of the most comforting food ever. The Egyptian Mussaka Stew is something that I cry out for in the middle of the night. This may be a result of my being a former employee. A strange combination of Indian and Greek, Poppi's is one of the few places in Eugene that you can find a decent lamb kabob sandwich. For authentic Greek food I would personally stay as far away from this place as possible. Gyros/pita sandwiches are supposed to have pickled cabbage as well as at least seasoned vegetables. The beef/lamb gyros had meat that tasted like pressed together middle of the line hamburger. The chicken was I'm not kidding you canned chicken that was not cooked at all. Greek food is supposed to have flavor. I would never recommended this place to my worst enemy. This is a real review unlike all the fake 5 star ones. Poppi's is about as Greek as you'll get in Eugene, with exception to all the frats and sororities a mile away. Throw another interesting mix of their Indian fusion and you've got yourself quite an establishment. Their food has always been tasty and the service has always remained adequate. Pricewise, its not friendly for the college kids but suitable for the rest of the working world hence relatively moderate prices. I had the gyros and it was amazing! Thick, flavorful slices of meat that wasn't greasy. The tzatziki sauce and pita were a perfect accompaniment and made it a fresh dish. Also ordered tasty potato and onion fritters w coconut chutney. SO good. My friend got the chicken yellow curry but she wouldn't share (Grrr). Next time I'll try that. Is there a more Eugene restaurant than Poppi's? With its weird layout, mash-up of cuisines and apparent lack of decorum, this place gives off an unmistakable hippie vibe. Also along those lines it serves better as a hangout than a restaurant. Your first challenge is figuring out how to get served. There is a big counter facing the front door, but there are also waitstaff running the floor. You can order either way apparently, but you need to be seated to see a menu. Once you see the menu, there is more confusion. Who decided to put both Greek and Indian food on offer? Do they do one better than the other? Would anyone go here because they couldn't decide between those two? A couple of co-workers and I decided to split the difference at a lunch outing. We ordered pappadums and saganaki as appetizers, both pretty simple and safe choices, and both were pretty good. Our vegetarian got a lentil stew, while the carnivores went with gyros (yiros on the menu), also simple and safe, and we were all satisfied. It's okay food at a pretty good price. If you want a simple lunch and happen to be downtown, this is an acceptable option. read more

We happened upon this place on a roadtrip to Portland. This place was the only place in downtown that had outdoor seating and was open at 10:00, so two big pluses there. The staff was really friendly and gave us samples of the Greek pine resin wine. They also had a good beer selection, which pleased the German on the trip. The food is pretty good, but nothing too exciting. It is an interesting combination of Greek and Indian food and not too expensive. I had the special, which was some Indian chickpea and eggplant dish. It came with a little dish of chuntneys, which was a nice touch as well. Since we arrived just as the kitchen was closing, we got our food lightening fast. That was much appreciated since we still had many hours of driving ahead of us that night. read more

Extremely delicious food at this local Eugene restaurant. The happy hour deal on yiros and a pint is one of the best in town. Favorite restaurant in town! Always happy and comforted at poppi's Anatolia! beautiful environment, and delicious, feel good food.

The outside is very small, but it opens up to a pretty large space inside. The place was half full at 6PM Sunday, and we were seated promptly. We ordered the Saganaki as an appetizer, which is goat cheese fried in olive oil that tasted surprisingly like a cheez it. Pairing it with the thick wedges of rye bread and extra lemon was an excellent combo. For the main course we had spanakopita, which is spinach and feta in a phillo dough crust. It said it had dill in it, but I didn't really taste any dill. Overall, it was just... there. I didn't find it had that great of a flavor or texture. It was served with a side of potatoes and cauliflower. The potatoes were covered in tomato sauce, and tasted like... potatoes covered in tomato sauce. The cauliflower had a nice lemon zest to it, and was the only thing that tasted more than average. For dessert, we had Amygdolopitta (or as we called it, cake with chocolate topping) and halva. Both were really good, the cake being made on site and the halva imported from greece. Overall, nice atmosphere, but bland spanakopita. Dessert was excellent though, enough to warrant a trip back to try their Indian food perhaps. read more

I used to come here a lot when I lived in eugene. I've always enjoyed the food here. I usually always get the thalli platter. The last time I came here tho I brought my boyfriend and we were not able to get that since it was early in the day. With our lunches that day the rice was undercooked and hard. He wasn't really excited about coming back at first after our last time. However tonight everything was absolutely fabulous we had AWESOME service and shared the thalli platter along with the roe dip appetizer which came with yummy fennel bread. The thalli platter comes with a nice assortment of yummy chutneys, which are to die for.. Omg delicious!!!!!as well as a sampling of 4 vegetarian dishes. We are both fairly big eaters and still came home with leftovers. I love poppis and we will definitely be back soon!!! read more

Absolutely five stars. This is my new favorite restaurant in Eugene. Tonight was my second time (my first visit was just a few days ago, I had to go back!) and I was not disappointed. Both times I've gotten the specials--perfectly flavored and delicious vegetarian offerings. My partner got the Thali Plate, which was a selection of 4 of their vegetarian curry dishes--one with potatoes, one with spinach, one with okra, and one with lentils, served with yogurt, chutneys, and pineapple (which totally worked, to my surprise). Next time we'll split that, it was enough for two people. We also got their tzatziki as an appetizer. After the first bite I was transported back to Greece. I still haven't tried their desserts, but I hear the rice pudding is the best. Next time I'll go on a Sunday when they have an all-Greek menu. So yummy!!!! read more

I've been in twice with my husband and we loved it both times. The food is wonderful, and good portion sizes too. I saw some people complain about the mix of Greek and Indian food, but if you look up Anatolia you will see why this makes sense. I had the yiros this time and they were amazing! I went for one of the cheaper dinner plates - the spanikopitta- but WOW was I impressed! I have passed this place so many times and finally made a point to try this place. Now, I wonder why I didn't stop in sooner!!!! The spanikopitta is a spinach and feta mix that sandwiched between a flaky buttery crust (in essence it looks like lasagna). The sides that come with it are vegetables and potatoes. If you want either of these as a side with another plate on the menu, you can only order one. Well of course I want BOTH veggies and potatoes, so I got this plate. The potatoes are basically covered in a pasta sauce and the veggies are primarily steamed broccoli. As a whole, it all tastes amazing. Their lunch menu has some gyros and their dinner menu has some curry. At this restaurant, you can get *some* of the lunch gyros for dinner (specific ones - they'll tell you.) However, it's simply pleasant that at this restaurant you can get both at the same place. Cute little restaurant. Underrated food. Don't just walk by, give it a try and like me, you'll be coming back. 1. I've had Yelp for 10 years and this is my first review. 2. The food at Poppi's is FANTASTIC and the atmosphere is so homey and warm. We go once a week. 3. The only reason I'm writing this review is because I had the WORST service I've ever had in my entire life tonight. I was once a waitress--I get the challenges of the food industry. That said, tonight I was served by Leslie. Leslie immediately scolded me when my 4-year-old dashed to the bathroom after my husband, "I have hot plates coming." When I looked up in confusion, she made eye contact with me and repeated "I have hot plates coming", referring to my child having moved too swiftly near her (she was not holding anything). Leslie proceeded to make two or three more condescending/overbearing comments; including how my child shouldn't be pouring salt from the condiment container (he put some in his hand) and that he shouldn't touch the cayenne pepper powder (his father is Peruvian -- my kid can handle spice/please don't parent him). We considered leaving due to her service. To top everything off, an older gentleman came into the restaurant after us-- he asked a few questions about the menu. "Sir, I'm confused as to what exactly you want." She was abrasive and condescending -- the gentleman left in dramatic fashion, announcing he would not leave a tip. Leslie quipped "I wouldn't expect you to". Leslie turned to the remaining tables, jovially referencing "that crazy man", taking no responsibility for her atrocious, alienating customer service. Poppies embodies the qualities that I believe make a restaurant good. It is welcoming, unpretentious, and consistently delicious. Their food is a range of Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Indian. On Sunday they have a special Greek menu. Spicy means spicy at Poppi's, but they have a good spectrum of mild selections as well. Ambiance is pleasant. Seating is pretty tight, call ahead for groups of five or more. Outdoor seating is available when the weather is nice. Recommendations: Dinner: Yiro plate, Korma Chicken, Vindaloo Chicken. Everything I had was excellent! I love Mediterranean food so I tried an appetizer sampler with tatziki, roasted eggplant dip and stuffed grape leaves.
