We spent 3 days snowboarding in Durango last weekend and our visit to Pop was the absolute highlight! Kate (the great) is the hostess with the mostest! She got us on the wait list when they were booked and was able to find us a table after someone didn't show. Our server Rachel, was great! She was quick to check on us and bring another round as soon as we needed it. We spent 3 days ripping the mountain but the one thing we talked most about on the way home was our meal and the time we spent at Pop Sushi! I'd give them 10 stars if I could!!! Whenever I travel I make a point to seek out great sushi and Pop Sushi is among the best I've had. I try to be a tough critic when it comes to food. A 4 star meal is one I enjoy and would eat again in a heartbeat. A 5 star is one I'll think about years later and will go out of my way to eat again. Pop hits that 5 star mark easily. The ingredients at Pop's are fresh and of high quality, and the menu items range from a few more standard (but still delicious options) to truly unique creations. The Layu roll is amongst the best rolls I've ever eaten, anywhere. The same goes for their steamed shrimp dumplings, unbelievably good. If you aren't a big sushi fan, they have a great selection of delicious ramen. The staff is great and helpful, a full bar with well made drinks, and the atmosphere is great. They managed to make it feel casual and upscale at the same time. East By Southwest is the more famous option in Durango, while it's very solid, I highly suggest stepping off the beaten path and coming here instead. read more

Came here for happy hour on a Monday evening around 5. Was told it would be 45 minutes to an hour long wait which was surprising for a Monday but I figured that was normal after reading some reviews prior. We did end up waiting a little over 30 min to get seated for 4 of us. Waited probably another 10 min to be acknowledged by our waitress. It was pretty busy and I heard from another party they were understaffed so I cut them slack there. Our waitress was really nice and attentive, and we placed our food order right away and it came out within 15 minutes. The food was pretty delicious. We got a couple of rolls and several appetizers from the happy hour menu. Great atmosphere and service. But obviously they do need more staffing. Nonetheless we enjoyed our dinner and highly recommended. read more

I come to Durango a few times a year for work. I usually go to restaurants on the main drag in town, but my husband wanted sushi and the one sushi joint in downtown Durango isn't really made for sitting down and having a nice meal. So I asked him to do some research and he found Pop Sushi. We enjoyed our first meal so much that we came back later in the week with my boss to eat Pop Sushi again. Pop Sushi has a diverse menu: rolls, sashimi, and other entree options. We go out for sushi fairly frequently, so we were delighted to find some twists on traditional favorites on the Pop Sushi menu we had never seen before: asparagus and broccoli in their veggie tempura, goat cheese wontons, and many specialty sashimi items with new flavor combinations. We went to Pop Sushi both late on a Sunday night and for happy hour during the week. The place seems to be always busy, so making a reservation here is a great idea. Service can occasionally be a bit slow, but folks are generally kind and mean well, so just take it in stride. They have some good happy hour deals that are worth checking out, but we would recommend going regardless. read more

This is my preferred sushi restaurant! Out of downtown, close to home. Park right outside. I got taken care of right away by Blaine who greeted me at the door, he was also my server. He made sure to take really good care of my kids. I ordered the chicken teriyaki and he split up everything for my picky eaters! Loved my experience with Blaine and my wonderful food. Stopped by Pop Sushi while driving through Durango. We started with a few basic rolls first to see how they were. We ordered the hamachi with scallion roll and a spicy tuna roll. We were so pleasantly surprised as to the high quality fish and tastiness of the rolls! We then ventured to try some nigiri--salmon, yellowtail, and tuna. They were awesome! Oh boy, how I love Pop Sushi! It has a great happy hour and super fun menu. Drinks are creative, you really get the bang for your buck with deals and the food is so good! I always get the mussels and walnut shrimp, and they have always been consistently good. I've taken a tour of the sushi menu and, for the most part, have enjoyed everything. Make sure to experiment with the nigiri specials, when they have them. And, when you're looking for something a bit more simple, their various ramen are so satisfying. Frankly, I wish they were open for lunch! But, until then, this will always be a go-to for dinner. read more

Was really excited to try this place. My brothers and I went on a Friday night knowing we would have to wait a little bit. We were told 25-30 min. Totally reasonable. We were supposed to get a text when ready to be seated. Almost 45 minutes later we hadn't received a text so went back in. The hostess was annoyed, and rude. She sat us at a high top table which the end of the table was used for servers to place their water pitchers, dirty dishes.. etc. The service was poor. Not sure if she had too many tables or was disinterested. The two other people I was with meals came out 10 min before mine. I can't speak for my brothers, but I enjoyed the sushi. Overall great food and experience. We love all the different takes on the sushi rolls. The one draw back is that there were three gigantic TV's in the restaurant/dining room, playing sports...that literally no one is there to watch. This isn't a sports bar. It's more of a date-night spot and the TV's feel very out of place. Fact is, the TV's are there...but the one in the sushi bar area at least plays a Japanese food show (or something of the sort) which is at least relevant and not a total departure from the experience we went there for. The last time we were there our group was seated directly in front of one of the walls with one of the TV's so that three of us had no choice but to be invaded by whatever game was on that night. It was incredibly distracting to have right in our face as much as we tried to give our attention to each other at the table. Anyway, the food outshines this "problem" but we do wish the TV's would go away or at least show the cooking shows, etc. Thank you, management, for any consideration. We went here on my birthday, which turned out to be a Monday. That means HAPPY HOUR ALL DAY! This is dangerous, because buying $3 drafts and having $5 plates can lead to a very full and not so broke couple! SCORE! You simply cannot go wrong with those prices. Before tip, we had a full belly with items to take home for $44 for two! I could list everything that we ate, but that might be a bit boring. Just get in there and experience it for yourself. It is a quaint space, that honestly can get a bit cold as people come in and out of the building during the winter. If you prepare with a resilient layer of body fat, clothing, or both, I assure you you won't feel a thing but a happy stomach. Great times. Great staff. Great food. I really enjoy Rice Monkey's food, so I wanted to give Pop Sushi a try. Several things kept this from being a 5-star review: Location. It's way off on the north edge of town. I can't impulsively decide to eat here while strolling in downtown Durango. Seating. Yes, it has more room than Rice Monkeys, but it's still tiny. Had to wait 20 minutes on a weekday night for a table for two. On top of that, we were seated at a tiny table with backless stools -- no good place for a jacket, and maybe I like having a back on my chair? Trendy but lame. Food. It's not as good as Rice Monkey. Every sushi roll we ordered was dry, lacking sauce, whereas the menu options at RM have it right. $16 ramen, even by Durango standards, is pretty galling. I walked in full of hope, optimism, and a hunger for good sushi which Durango is so sadly lacking. I left with stomach cramps, disappointment, and sadness. I'm cutting a fair amount of slack on service, it was their second night open and it showed, so that has no bearing on my review. I'm just going to completely ignore that for now, My concern is 100% the food. So, we started with 2 miso soups (which were excellent) and the Thai Chicken Wings, which were soggy and weirdly tasted like fish which isn't really a thing I want in chicken wings. We got three rolls; the Miso tuna roll, a Tuna Avocado roll, and a Shrimp Tempura. All were drowned in various sauces. If I had to describe it, I would call it sushi you would make for someone that doesn't like fish. You just couldn't taste any of the fish or the roll under the completely overpowering sauces. Look, I get it. Rolls often have sauces. I like it most of the time. But lets take the Miso Tuna Roll, it was literally dripping with the same dressing they use on their salad (a miso ginger dressing). It was all you could taste. Don't get me wrong., I love that dressing. On a salad. The roll even could have been good if it was just a little dab on each piece, but it was so much sauce that it is still all I can taste an hour afterwards. The tuna avocado barely held together it was so soaked in this truly vile lime oil sauce (why? Why is lime and Sushi a trend now?) and the shrimp tempura roll was soggy with "sweet soy sauce" which as far as I can tell was just sugar. Sauce abuse aside, the execution was poor. The rice was very overcooked and mushy, with no detectable grain structure (a major sushi nono) and piece size was all over the place which is just amateur hour when it comes to the knife work. Fish servings in the roll were good. I walked in hopeful and left still hungry and out just shy of 80$. Durango still is in need of good sushi. I'll be willing to give this place another try, maybe after they figure out their menu and ditch the Lime oils they seem to like putting on every item. Fingers crossed? read more
