My strategy was two fold: First, I wanted to find authentic food for myself, and second, I wanted to make sure that the place we ultimately went to may allow for repeat occurrences. 3.5-star. I wanted to try Pollo Amigo for a while, and I finally got to try it today for dinner. Well, I had the 1/2 chicken with yucca and salad for takeout. Pollo Amigo is only like a 10 min drive from my house, but when I was coming home, the chicken smelled so good that it was almost a torture. The chicken had a good taste, and it was tender, but I don't think it was the best chicken I've ever had. The yucca was okay but bland. My boyfriend found this place and suggested that we try it since we were in the neighborhood. I've never had Peruvian chicken before, but I can honestly say it was incredibly delicious! -Atmosphere: It is a very small casual restaurant with about 4 tables. I guess one could call it a hole in the wall, but it is very cute and cozy. With that said, it is very casual for dining in and they even offer carry out. -Service: Upon walking in the owner greeted us and was just so incredibly welcoming! I guess he knew it was our first time and immediately handed us a menu and told us to have a seat. My boyfriend ordered the 3 Tacos des carnitas which came with rice and beans. Everything was really good! The chicken was very juicy and was coming off of the bone. I never order rice and beans but I gave it a try and was pleasantly surprised. The plantains were so delicious and really brought the whole plate together as something to sweeten my palate. The tacos were really good and had so much flavor. Under new management for a couple of years, this great little hole-in-the-wall is now called "Pollo Amigo." While the menu has been expanded slightly, the main attraction remains the chicken - Peruvian charcoal broiled chicken. I salivate as I write this! When one eats chicken like this, one wonders why chicken would be consumed any other way. The flavors and texture are amazing and moist, and if you are one of those healthy types who doesn't eat chicken skin, don't be an idiot and please make an exception. The chicken skin is AMAZING! Other offerings and sides are all very good. I love the friend yuca, and the tacos and burritos are almost as good as the chicken. This place is AMAZING!!! I've had their food about a dozen times now and it's always fantastic. The owner is very friendly and will remember your face and name after a few visits. I usually stick to the Pollo Saltado - it's flavorful and light and awesome. Get it! You're welcome. Their Peruvian Charcoal Chicken is out of this world!!! There's also a special soup that's not on the menu but there is a sign for it to the right if the register. It has cilantro and their chicken and other things that must be sent from the gods. Little teeny hole in the wall that delivered great results! My fiancé were starving after a long trip up from DC and being the day after Christmas, most places were closed. Tiny, hole in the wall place. Perfect for picking up on your way home for dinner. I had the 1/2 roast chicken, black beans, yucca, and plantains. Got a beef quesadilla for the wife. Both were really outstanding. The quesadilla was not a meat and cheese only combo, but full of peppers, onions and tomato with sour cream, pico and a huge serving of beans and rice on the side. The chicken had great flavor and was greatly complimented by the white and green sauces served for dipping. Black beans were tender and just-right salty while the Yucca was crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. The plantains were cooked to that perfect just-caramelized around the edges sweetness. All of the above was about 20 bucks and there was plenty of leftovers. Would have given 5 stars but the chicken was a bit dry, but my guess is because it was a rainy sunday and no one was there. If it had been busy I imagine it would have been better. Everything else was made fresh. They also have enchiladas and mexican food on the menu and will be giving those a try next time. read more

Not embarrassed to say that I go here WAY more often than I should. The chicken is just unbelievable every time. The staff feel more like a welcoming family than servers. The jason burrito is outstanding, the chimichangas spot on. Its a small place but I'm telling you, best chicken I've ever had. Simple, fresh, charcoal grilled, and perfectly spiced. This place is awesome The staff barely speaks English, and the restaurant always has spanish speakers as patrons. I get their half chicken with yucca and fried plantains. The chicken is so flavorful (I don't know how they do that), the dipping sauces are rich and tangy, and the sides are so amazing. Those plantains are addictive, I could eat that all day. I have to confess that I often get takeout, but the smell is so alluring that I rip into the chicken and sides as soon as i get out of the restaurant and into the car. This place is unreal. Amazing food and service at a low price. There's no frills and no a/c, but you can eat-in (if there's room) or take-out, and honestly, I thought the atmosphere was warm (not just literally) and welcoming. I got the 1/4 chicken with plantains and rice & beans. I've tried the fried yucca on another occasion.The plantains were perfectly caramelized, the rice and beans were delicious, and the chicken was quite literally the best chicken I have ever. had. ever. EVER. The fried yucca is very good dipped in the green and white sauces they give to you. I also got a pineapple Jarritos soda-- they have a few different kinds there, the Coke made with sugar (no corn syrup), and some other things like coconut juice. I was tricked by great reviews. Went there with two kids for quick lunch and man was it cold inside. And I guess you can get a better service if you speak Spanish - I don't. I guess that's why when I ordered chicken enchilada and asked if it was spicy they said No, it is not. I told the waitress that I am going to share it with my daughter, and she again said no. Then the small salad on the side burnt my throat, good, at least not my daughter's. I asked the waitress why did she tell me it was not spicy and she goes: the enchilada is not spicy! One of my favorite spots in Towson for quick take-out. Usually, I walk in and walk out with food in less than 10 minutes. Limited menu, but the food is really good. I always order the half chicken with beans & rice, and it comes with two sauces, which are tasty. I've never been disappointed. Great local business, and the owner is usually behind the counter. During the recent cold snap, I stopped in, and while waiting, the owner gave me a small cup of chicken soup, which was a great holdover while I waited. Great food! The place is owned by a Peruvian couple and they cook their food authentically. You definitely don't feel like you're in the middle of Towson when you stop in for a meal. The carnitas tacos that I had were awesome -- carnitas were still really tender and the added salsa was nice and spicy. Will definitely be coming back to try out the other food they have. I was expecting a lot more based on the high rating, but ended up being disappointed. I suspect the high rating is due largely to the ridiculously affordable prices. This place is mostly good for take out. The seating is very limited, and the atmosphere leaves a lot to be desired. I ordered the rotisserie chicken, and the people with me got tacos. The rotisserie chicken - a whole leg - was dried out and didn't have much flavor. Rotisserie chicken is supposed to be moist inside, crispy on the outside, and a little slice of heaven. I was extremely disappointed. Maybe they don't get enough business to have decent turn-over? My side of black beans was pretty bland too - again, extremely disappointing. My fellow diners said their tacos were also bland and the meat was dry, and they also were disappointed by the beans. Like I said, the prices are wonderful for the quantity of food, but the overall lack of flavor and quality don't really make up for the price. I've been to some Peruvian places were the food was incredible. I've also had black beans that made you want to smack your grandma, so in comparison, this place is just so-so. Anyway, enough of my commuting problems, on to the food. The smells that were filling up the room in this small restaurant was just divine, my initial plan was to just get the Peruvian chicken but i added the Lomo Saltado as well. Verdict the lomo Saltado is good, really good, will go out of my way to get that, well not when i am coming from Rockville. The burrito had freshly made chopped grilled steak, although there were more beans & rice, and it was topped with cheese.The guacamole was great to eat along with the burrito. Pollo Amigo is pretty much the only Peruvian worth getting in the Towson area. The chicken is crisp and juicy. The plantains are always the right blend of crispy and soft and the rice and beans are pork free and delicious. Everything is freshly prepared and perfect. The store as pretty decent seating. Every time I come there is usually several other customers but it's not overcrowded like some Peruvian chicken restaurants. I always get lomo saltado when I'm home and found this place on Yelp! It's easy to find and a little hole in the wall but definitely worth trying! The price was decent ($12.17) for the amount of food I got but I think they could give a little more. We have been going to this restaurant for 3 years now. My goto takeout food is always Chinese food (I'm a New Yorker :-)). But my husband hates Chinese since I used to eat it almost every weekend. I don't get up to Pollo Amigo for lunch very often, but I am so happy when I do. It's a little hole-in-the-wall in a teeny shopping center off York Road. There's usually plenty of parking. The shop doesn't look like much, but the food more than makes up for it. I usually get a quarter chicken with yucca and plantains on the side. They come with two little dipping/drizzling sauces, one white and one green. The chicken is just absurdly delicious. Juicy, tons of flavor on the skin and down through to the meat. The plantains are sweet and soft, as you would expect. And the yucca fries. OH MAN. I can't even find the words. Also, Pollo Amigo sells Inca Kola! It's a Peruvian soda, golden, fruity and sweet - a very unique, refreshing flavor that goes well with the meal. Be sure to grab plenty of napkins; you'll get juice and grease on your hands and face no matter how politely you try to eat. It seems they prepare each order special (i.e., they don't have a big batch of chicken ready to send out the door), which is great because everything comes to you piping hot and fresh, but be prepared to wait a bit for your order. If you're in a rush, look someplace else. Pollo Amigo is definitely not a spot for a nice date, but it's some of the best chicken I've ever eaten. read more

Really, really good chicken. I got the 1/4 chicken, white meat with french fries and yucca. The chicken was amazingly moist and flavorful. I liked both the sauces that came with it (I could only use the green sauce in small doses - spicy!). The yucca was super good - especially when dipped in the sauces. The french fries were pretty terrible, but that might have been because I took the food to go? Next time I'll get the plantains. FYI: this place is now called Pollo Amigo, no Los Amigos Dos. I had the 1/2 chicken and it was "out of the park" good. It comes with a choice of sides (I picked salad and fries), some additional salad dressing and some fresh, bitey salsa Verde. While neither of the sides were earth-shattering (they were merely darn good), the star of the show is definitely the chicken. You can taste the spices and charcoal without overwhelming the chicken meat itself. All pieces, including the breast, were succulent and finger-licking good. The chicken is succulent and spicy, and the black beans are amazing. My wife gets the lomos saltado, which is beef with fries and stuff on rice. It's flavorful and juicy and carbolicious. Everything we've had here is excellent. 99% of the business is to go; they have two small tables so you might end up eating inna car. It's primitive but fun and tasty. A good cheap evening.
