I stopped by without planning ahead because it was one of the nearby restaurants with tamales. I was having a craving! There were only 4 patrons when we arrived on Monday night. We were greeted immediately and proceeded to the bar to place a to-go order. We ordered 3 chicken tamales, 3 beef tacos and plantains. The food was ready in about 15 min and it was packaged well and hot. Unfortunately, once we unpacked the food at home, we realized we received the wrong order. What should have been beef tacos were actually chicken taquitos. They were ok. The tamales were fresh but lacked sufficient meat so I it felt like I was just eating breading thus, I didn't finish them. They also needed more seasoning. I have had better Mexican food elsewhere. In contrast, the plantains were excellent! Overall, the 3 stars is for the freshness not the flavor (with the plantains as the exception). read more

Tela Mares has beautiful decorations that makes for a great atmosphere and photo-op. They have a "tunes juxebox" electronic thing so that you can play your music (you have to pay). The restaurant had no music playing but my family played some on the jukebox for the birthday boy and it set the vibe for the dinner. I ordered a tamarindo juice drink and it was absolutely amazing, the perfect amount of sweetness. I ordered the "Plato el trovador" which consists of beef, chicken fajita, shrimp and bbq ribs served with rice, beans and salad. Mexican food is my favorite therefore I can genuinely say the food was delicious. Sadly they were out of cake /deserts and this was a birthday dinner so that was a little disappointing. The food gets a solid 4/5 stars because it was delicious but I wouldn't say its the best. Not overpriced at all, very good pricing on the food. Ceviche mixto was just not good. Sitting in a puddle of brown liquid, hardly any flavor, salt, or taste of lime. Weird looking shrimp pieces. Funny because a review from nine years ago says basically the same thing - you'd think someone would've given it a second thought by now, it doesn't even look palatable. It's located in the Latin community of Fells Point and that manager and his staff were sooooo nice and helpful. The restaurant is pretty roomy with Latin decor (It reminded me of San Luis, Mexico near Yuma, Arizona). What was funny was that we walk into a Latin restaurant and the music playing was Gangam Style. I ordered Taquitos for appetizers while my co-worker ordered fried plantains. Then she had the chicken fajita plate while I ordered their Jalisco platter that had enchiladas, tacos and tamales! I tell you..it was good. I didn't walk away disappointed. The salsa that went with the chips was delicate yet carried enough of a spicy tinge. The chips were fresh, crunchy, and tasty. I had the the Sopa de Marisco and I couldn't believe the generous portions of seafood (clam, mussels, fish, calamari, and shrimp). The broth was just right - not too much or too little salt and the flavor was amazing. There was so much soup (it came in a 24 oz bowl) that I was able to save some in a plastic tub they provided upon request and take it home for another meal. I love the variety at Tela Mares. You have your Mexican usual suspect foods, as well as Honduran and Salvadorian cuisine to choose from. The appetizer sampler and the combo platters are a good ways to try everything if you have a hard time deciding. Some specialties you don't normal see, which are good surprises, are the horchata drinks and the fried plantain. I'd also recommend the chicken fajita. It's solid and you can't go wrong with this pick. For those looking at costs, the price point here per the portions served are well worth it. A good entree may come by for less than $15, but could probably feed two mouths. There's also a menu for "sides", but these sides come in ginormous portions and are less than $5. 2.5 years later, and it's still my "go-to" for decent Latin food in Baltimore. I always mean to try something different when I come here, but I can't seem to get away from that delicious Tijuana platter and the Pupusa de Queso. So good, and always so filling! I've never been a fan of refried beans, but this is seriously one of the only places where I'll gobble them up happily and ask for more. I have no idea of who the cook is in the back, but please, for the love of all that's holy - don't ever fire him. He's too good for them to lose! Servers are very sweet and will make an effort to see that your meal is just the way you like it. We brought in our newborn daughter and everyone was stopping by the table to smile at her and make conversation. This might annoy some people, but we're pretty proud of the kiddo, so we didn't mind. :) Prices are reasonable, as always. Our meals there are never more than maybe 25 bucks for the two of us, tops. For food like this, it's damned worth it. One of these days, I swear I'm going to try something else - but, hey, why mess with perfection, right? The only minor quibble I have is that the music is often turned up to 11 (extra points if you catch the movie reference). It's especially loud at the front of the house - I don't see how people can sit there without getting a headache, never mind actually holding a conversation, but I've seen folks do it. I've been here maybe 5 times and I love it! You get chips and salsa after being seated, the chips are always fresh. The food I've had here is always hot and a large portion. They make their own tortillas so they are great except that they don't give you enough. Their menu is very extensive. Some of the best options are the platters, they are definitely enough for two people. Pupusas, tamales, and fajitas are also great. I wouldn't really recommend getting a margarita here. Every time I've got one here, I thought "maybe this one will be better." And end up disappointed. The servers also make the drinks, and the servers I've had at least do not know how to make drinks. The service is not the best, not bad, but sometimes a little confused. Go here for the food, and you won't be disappointed because the great prices really make up for anything else. read more

Came here on Saturday night with a large group. Located on broadway, the place wasn't crowded at all and had a nice brightly colored atmosphere. There are TVs scattered around the place to watch spanish programming or sports. The menu is mostly in spanish and there are a ton of items to choose from. carne asada tampico (~10)- carne asada, lettuce, beans, and rice. Large plate with carne asada, rice and beans with some tortillas to wrap the meat in. You definitely get your money's worth. My dining friends and I (Go Hopkins Alum!) came here for lunch on a Saturday. Initial thoughts: I felt uncomfortable that the waiter (likely the owner) was advertising the house specials, the paella, and lobster, when we asked for recommendations- hmm...the most expensive items on the menu, perhaps. He mentioned how we should really get seafood here. Okay, you're the boss, I thought. I'll get seafood. I ordered: -ceviche mixto: The menu said haddock, shrimp, and something else- there was no haddock nor fish in mine for sure, but just shrimp, 4 clams, and quite a bit of tomatoes, onions, and cilantro. The whole thing had some nice avocado slices on top, but was sitting in murky blackish liquid. I didn't taste any hint of lemon or lime juice, and judging from the texture, they took a shortcut and blanched the shrimp instead of curing it with citrus juice. The clams were raw. Big negatives, in my opinion. All I wanted was lemon juice and seafood! I doused it with Tapatio and ate it because it was seafood and I had paid $12 for it.. -yucca con chicharron: Crispy pork shoulder pieces (I thought chicarrons = pork rinds? Oh well). Crispy fried yucca. Served with pickled cabbage and tomato sauce- the same as the accompaniments that came with the pupusas. Other people's food that I tried: -Fish stuffed with shrimp- the shrimp wasn't stuffed, so much as the fish was fried first, and the shrimp were placed in the cavity afterwards. The fish was fried, and probably a bit overfried at that, in my opinion. -Refried beans- too salty for me; I had to eat them with lots of rice to compensate. -Pupusas- I liked that there was a good filling:dough ratio, and in my book that is not lots of dough and a generous amount of filling. When I found this restaurant on Yelp, I expected great seafood because of the name of the restaurant (cloth of the seas? maybe?) However, I was very, very disappointed by the seafood. They had a very extensive menu, but I'd have rather seen a menu with fewer items that could deliver higher quality. I hadn't been to Telemares in over two years. I always liked it, but CoVId trapped us in Peru for nine months, and other travel kept us from dropping by. We stopped by on a whim today. What a pleasant surprise!. The decor is much improved, and the food has gone from very good to GREAT! The coffee was the best I can recall in a restaurant, but that was just the start. The Poblano Enchiladas were exceptional. I have been enjoying south-of-the-border cuisine since the Korean War, and these were the best! Yep, I am an old dog, and it takes a lot to impress me, but I was impressed. I had it with chicken--nice-sized bites of breast, which tasted like it had been freshly grilled. The mole sauce was just right, not too sweet with a hint of dark chocolate. The salad was fresh, crisp, and tasty. I mixed it with some of the mole sauce, which made an excellent salad dressing. My wife had the grilled salmon, and it too was exceptional. We loved the spices. Again, just right! Not too much, not too little. The place is understaffed, which is typical for restaurants in Baltimore these days as they come back from the pandemic, so service was a bit slow. After being seated we are given a complimentary bowl of chips and salsa. My usual order is a margarita on the rocks which is about $4.00, a deal. A bowl of seviche and the pollo y papas tamale. This is all I need and I am satisfied. The seviche is very fresh and plentiful. It has shrimps, calamari and clams, fresh tomatoes, cilantro, slices of fresh avocado. Delish. I prefer to eat it with chips instead of cracker. The tamale is the greatest I have ever had. They wrap the maize, chicken, and potato in a banana leaf, which lends it the flavor and color. Went here last night. I'd give it a 3.5, but a 4 won't do it. a 4 means I'd definitely go back, and this was just okay. Things I liked: the fresh chips and salsa. Definitely restaurant salsa, which I happen to like. Salty and hot chips. The fried plaintain with beans and sour cream hit the spot. Crispy and fresh. Simple and tasty. For dinner I got the vegetable quesadilla. Sort of a mish mash of veggies that could have been from a frozen bag, but they were covered in cheese and guacamole so I was happy. The tortilla itself was cooked perfectly, crispy and delicious. It was a hit for me. But probably not for many others. Bf got one of the combo platters with a tamale, enchilada, taco, rice, beans, etc. He seemed to enjoy. He liked the grilled taco the best. He enjoyed the margaritas as well. I don't know if I'd ever come back to Tela Mares but it did catch my attention. This place is pretty popular with the small but budding Honduran population in Southeast Baltimore. The decor is set up so that it's part dining hall, part bar, and part dance floor. I went with my girlfriend here on a Friday night and we were one of maybe four other couples in the restaurant. Not very packed at all. The service here was pretty bad as we only were filled water after I requested. We didn't get a refill on tortilla chips and we were only asked after we finished our plates whether the food was good. Tela Mares has a fairly extensive menu catering to broad, generic Mexican/Central American eaters but they also contain a Honduran and Salvadoran menu. I will say that the Salvadoran menu likely should have been my option as my girlfriend went with the typical plate (listed on the menu as the Plato Tipico I) which contained rice, refried beans, a candied plantain, a pupusa, a Salvadoran-style corn patty, and veggies. I went with the Honduran fried chicken and tajadas. This was huge! Definitely a great value considering it's 3/4 of a chicken on top of pretty tasty Honduran-style fried plantains. The chicken is drenched in a signature sauce reminiscent of cole slaw but with a slight spicy kick to it. I'm sure there are better places to find this type of food, but for the price and location, not the worst option in the world. I wouldn't recommend but I wouldn't be upset if people tried this joint out. Maybe the next experience would be better. read more

Absolutely the worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant. The first thing we noticed when we walked in was the absence of even a single person eating, with only a few stragglers at the bar. This, along with the blaring heavy metal music was almost an immediate turn off, but we mistakenly gave it a chance. The waitress that greeted us was actually quite nice and we were seated pretty fast. When asked to turn the music Down, she barely changed the volume at all, but said the music would be quieter in another part of the restaurant which we moved to. After having sat Down for a couple minutes the music was turned up to full on ear rape. An obvious F you from the other waitress working there who I saw turn it up. Let me tell you, your days eating at Don Pablos, and some other Latin wannabe establishments are over! It's time to open up your palate's hirozon to the REAL deal! This is the place where I usually go for the true latin flavors, when I have that craving for the real thing. I have vastly travelled to Central America or visited la familia in California to know. So when I moved to Baltimore I started to come here, even when this was called El Trovador. Since then nothing has really changed other than the name and maybe ownership. Cook seems to be the same. The floor plan is large with tables at the front and some in the back, with a bar in the middle and a possible dance floor right across from it. We all know latinos love their soccer, so you will find a few tvs with soccer games on. Contrary to one of the reviews, I have never had bad service here, and I have been coming for a while. One thing is true the latinos will ask for extra chips instead of assuming that the server will bring more. So don't be shy and ask your server to bring you some more. Food? Ummm.... what to say about the food. Authentic, and large proportions. They make everything at home, pupusas (Salvadorenan tortilla filled with meats or cheese or beans or a combination), soups, tacos, and even orchata ( a lovely milky non alcoholic drink), tostadas ( the infamous fried plantain slices.) The food is what I would call a mix of Centro- American and Mexican. The prices are excellent. A pupusa for $2, wow and you can get filled with 3. They also carry a wide variety of cocktails - American and Latin, and a nice variety of Latin beers. One of their specialties, are the sopas, soups all hand prepared. Beef, seafood (my fav), chicken and even tripe. In fact you will soon notice that the large hispanic clientele usually will order a sopa instead of classic tacos or enchiladas. Latin style breakfast is served any time. Just look for it on the menu. PS, the busy night tends to be Saturday evening. Latin music is always playing here and sometimes it tends to be too loud, if this happens, let them know and they will lower the volume. I have never had issues with parking, there is plenty down Broadway. Well, I have also come here most of the times on a weekday. Then noticed a gratuity was added on my check. I didnt have a big party and nor see a sign saying it would be automatically be added. It was just my wife and 2 kids dining in. I was a little skeptical about this place because their website's menu doesnt work and its in another language (not spanish or english??). It was one of the only places that had openings for a large party on cinco de mayo so we decided to go ahead and try it. AMAZING food! They have alot of your traditional mexican dishes but theyre fabulous in comparison to the chain restaurants you usually see around the area. I was really impressed, I had the fish tacos which were great. My friends had fajitas and enchiladas and also raved about them.
