I wanna start by saying I did NOT get food poisoning...but if I did get food poisoning from this restaurants food I would still come back for more. I have genuinely never had a better experience at any food establishment than I did at Rocoto. My husband and I ordered the chicken and beef empanadas to start and the smell of the crust alone was enough to brighten our day but the whole of it altogether was an ethereal experience. Perfect combination of a delicious crunchy, flaky crust with a beautiful combination of flavors waiting inside. We would have been delighted to leave it at the empenadas, that alone would have been enough for a 5 (10 if I could) star review but we also ordered the birria tacos and the beef bistec a lo pobre which easily brings us up to a 30 star review. The tacos has a perfect balance of Oaxaca cheese and tender meat with a beautiful flavor and plenty of onion and cilantro and the perfect dipping broth to kick the flavor to the best birria tacos I've ever had. And the bistec a lo pobre with a side of fried plantains? Quoted directly from my husband, "I've never seen you have a slow blink because you've like a food this much." The plantains had such a beautiful flavor (that's the 3rd and probably not the last use of the word beautiful I've used in this review), the meat in and of itself was perfectly cooked and beautifully (see?) flavorful. I could have eaten that all alone but a big bite with the egg, plantains, meat and rice (which again, somehow could have been a perfect meal all on it's own. I can't imagine how someone makes rice taste soooo good but they've done it) was almost an exact reenactment of the scene from Rattatouille when he eats that piece of cheese with a strawberry and the scene shows fireworks and swirls as he discovered a newfound love of the new flavor combo. It almost feels like I've never had food before today it's thay good. You will almost never catch me wanting dessert at a restaurant but after what had been the best eating experience we've ever had we decided we had to stay a little bit longer, have some delicious chocolate cake and fried ice cream while we waited for our to-go order of empanadas to take home to enjoy later. The server was a very attentive lovely young woman who we sent to send our compliments to the owner (something we've never done) who was so kind to come over and chat with us for a minute. The restaurant was very calm, quiet and clean which is very refreshing for two people who are very tired of glaringly loud restaurants. The only noise we could hear between the two of us was laughter, joy and excitement over how good this food was. If you know the Lord you'll feel how blessed this food is....we walked into this restaurant after a deep heartfelt conversation about the sad things in our lives, shedding tears right outside in the car. From the moment we stepped in all the way up to writing this review 2 hours later we've experienced a joy like no other meal has ever brought us before. We can not wait to go back and bring everyone we know with us for as long as they'll let us in the building. If you've been thinking about trying this place out I say RUN, GO NOW! Was super excited to try Peruvian food for the first time. The server was super nice. It seems like the business--even though set up with tables-- is more catered towards takeout. Ordering: There is a Dr. Pepper drawing on the menu but when I asked for that specific drink, the server let me know they do not serve Dr. Pepper. We chose "1/2 a chicken" as our entree but we were told it's only served on Friday's and Saturday's--we went on a Wednesday. Nothing on the menu said anything regarding that. Was a bit disappointing to get told the two things I wanted from their own menu are not being served. Additionally, weirdly, we had to pay before we got our food right after we ordered so it was not the best when it comes to knowing what type of tip to leave. We ended up buying an extra drink after we ate to leave the waiter a tip. Food: We ended up getting Anticucho de Carne in place of the chicken they don't serve daily. We had Roasted Chicken Empanadas as well as Beef and Cheese, they were delicious--especially the roasted chicken one with peppers and onions. The beef and cheese filling was very mild tasting, most of the flavor came from the outer part. The Lomo saltado was very clean tasting and enjoyable. Lastly, we got fried ice cream with honey which was a 10/10! Ambience: The dining area was super clean. There was no music. The seats are pretty close to each other, initially we were the only ones there but about 5 more parties came in and it was pretty tight but not uncomfortable at all. OK, so here's something weird. I wanted their rotisserie chicken and beef empanadas normally not a problem but this location doesn't do rotisserie chicken until the weekend but they have beef empanadas the other smaller store on leader Heights Avenue does sell rotisserie chicken and it's always out of beef empanadas this is a good place to sit down and eat, but they don't have as much food as their little tiny location. read more

We met friends for dinner and although they have changed the place physically (there's a wall separating the dining room from the front door) everything wonderful is still the same! Edgard ( I think I spelled that correctly) is still in the kitchen working his magic! Friends ordered the chicken tacos and shrimp tacos. Served in warm, soft flour tortillas, they are always a hit. DH ordered a smash burger which he said was good, but needed a bit more seasoning. I was I. Heaven with the delish marinated roasted chicken. Someone asked me what it is marinated in; my answer was: it's marinated in deliciousness! True! Served with choices of sides, my chicken came with a salad ( always fresh ) and plantains. So delicious and such a great portion! I remember when the owner talked about expanding and opening another place and I am so happy he is getting rewarded for his hard work. This is a casual place where you order at a kiosk and then they bring you your food. They have Mexican and Peruvian plus some fusion dishes between the two. I got the Lomo Saltado and it was cooked perfectly with a ton of steak. My husband's burrito was insanely huge. We also enjoyed our empanadas. I want to come back to try their tacos and salads! The restaurant is very clean and clearly run with pride, which I appreciate. Unfortunately, our visit had a few disappointments. We ordered two beef empanadas and one chicken, but received the reverse: two chicken and one beef. While the chicken filling itself was flavorful and well-seasoned, the dough was overly sweet, which doesn't align with the traditional savory style of empanadas. The chicken sandwich with French fries felt more like something from a fast food spot than a sit-down restaurant. The nachos were fine, solid enough, but nothing that would draw me back on their own. I will say the chicken inside the empanadas was delicious, and it makes me think we may need to try one of the three authentic Peruvian entrées on the menu next time to get a better sense of what they can really do. I understand that being in York may require offering a more Americanized, fast food-style menu, but it does seem to dilute the Peruvian dining experience. One of my biggest disappointments was with the service model. Ordering is done at the counter, where you are prompted to tip 20%, 22%, or 25% before even receiving food. For a setup where you also bus your own table, this feels more like fast food than full service, and the tipping expectation is out of place. I truly want to love this place. I respect and applaud the family for what they've built and the growth they've achieved, but my hope is that future visits highlight more of the authentic Peruvian flavors and less of the fast food feel. read more

The flavor of the chicken is DELICIOUS!!!!! You can tell they cook the chicken slow and for a long time because it was so, so tender and still juicy and a flavor bomb of Peruvian goodness! My husband brought home take out and he said the employees are always so friendly and the place is very clean! First visit, after driving by so many times, just down the road from home. We were also referred by friends who frequent the Leaders Heights York PA location. Super friendly, helpful with menu items and ordering. We were overtaken by the aromas upon entering, nice! We shared the ceviche, delicious, with a little bite! LJ had the Seco (chicken) and I went for the Lomo Saltado. Two superb dishes. I liked the flavor of the Seco better. Had to bring half of my dish home. We're not used to eating this food type so we had a small GI disagreement but it won't stop us from going back. Hungry for Mexican and in the Red Lion area we came here after checking with Yelp. The reviews were good so we popped in for an early lunch in June. Easy to find in a small strip mall with ample parking on a busy street, our first impressions were that it was very clean and bright. There were a few outdoor tables and an expansive two room dining area - one better suited for special occasions and banquets, the other for dining in. Counter service was friendly and our food came out fast, although she was a little uneducated about the menu as she didn't know if horchata was available. While I was really craving a carnitas, I was told the pork was bbq'ed so I switched to 3 soft chicken tacos. Hubby got a burrito, that was big enough to feed a family! Both of us were very pleased with our meals. They were a tad messy due to the delicious juices (you definately can't say they were dry!) and filled both our bellies. Hubby has an enormous appetite so that's saying alot! If I had to say something negative it would be that the modern farmhouse aesthesic doesn't go with the food and I would have loved to experience a more cultural vibe. This review is for the LEADER HEIGHTS location. I'm not sure why that location hasn't been added to Yelp yet considering it's been open for about a year now. The Leader Heights location has a smaller, slightly different menu from its Red Lion counterpart, which is fine. I've always preferred smaller menus, as it's easier to decide what I want, and the staff can put more focus on the quality of the available items. The staff is welcoming and the store is clean. The rotisserie chicken is consistently fantastic, especially when combined with the light yellow dipping sauce. Perfectly juicy and tender. The sides I've tried are all good, particularly the yuca fries and the fried sweet plantains. The salad was very fresh the time I tried it, and the french fries are pretty standard, though are a great excuse to eat even more of the delicious dipping sauce. On the website, it lists the yuca fries and plantains among the sides that can come with the rotisserie chicken without mentioning that they are an additional $2 each compared to the other sides. The staff is nice enough to explain this when you order, but it should be clear to begin with, since many people plan their orders with their families ahead of time. Not a deal-breaker; the mentioned sides are excellent, just a bit disappointing not to know of the extra cost before planning. The last time I went, I decided to try the lomo saltado burrito with steak, which wasn't quite as good as I had hoped. Maybe my expectations were too high from how good the rotisserie chicken has always been. The steak was tender, but nothing really excelled flavor-wise. The onions were slightly overpowering and stuck with me after the meal. Considering the fairly high price, there's no reason I would order this instead of the rotisserie chicken again. Seriously though, the rotisserie chicken and dipping sauce are a must-try. I live pretty close to the Leader Heights location, but if I didn't, I would be willing to drive 30-45 minutes every once in a while to go here. In fact, there's an extremely similar place in Baltimore called Chicken Rico that I used to travel to years ago because it was so good. Maybe it still is, but Rocoto has proven to be a more than suitable local replacement. read more

One of the best sandwiches I ever ate! I ordered the Asago de Carne sandwich and it was perfectly proportioned meat to bread. It included a thin cut steak that was so tender, it fell apart so easily with every bite. I don't know what I was ordering, just took a chance. So delicious! Would get again and again! We are not from here and visiting beautiful York for the weekend. They are in phase yellow of the reopening so some stores are open now with restaurants for pickup orders. After stopping by Richard Nixon park, we ordered from this place in Red Lion. I got the Seco with chicken with is Peruvian style chicken with carrots, peas rice and beans. My son got the Bistec a lo Pobre grilled chicken, French fries, plantains, fried egg and rice. My wife got the Escabeche Pescado fried fish. Portion are amazing though. Of all the dishes, we enjoy the fish the most. The other two chicken was just so so flavor wise. I really didn't taste the Peruvian ness and it felt just plain. None of the proteins wowed us. This restaurant which opened a few years ago is one of my most favorite places to eat. The people are super friendly, We always order the same dishes, because we are very satisfied with how it tastes. You order at the counter and your fresh hot food is brought to you. I like that the tables are spaced out away from other tables, because I'm afraid of contracting COVID. The place is super clean, nice soft music in the background that isn't too loud and annoying to listen to, and the staff is so attentive and personable. That's very important to us when we eat out. We have tried the empanadas, fajitas, and burritos, which are so delicious, and my favorite is the lomo saltado. Everything is so fresh! We will continue to frequent this restaurant when we decide to eat out. It is on the ground floor, easy for my elderly mom to get in without having to climb stairs.
