I am a big fan of poki. I decided to try this place out seeing as it was next to Starbucks. I wasn't disappointed , you get a good amount for a very reasonable price. After my trip to the gym, I was disappointed Acai Joint closed down. In search of a nearby lunch spot, Yelp helped direct me to Poki Ya. This small poke joint is behind Starbucks, in the same plaza as the Mongolian and Subway restaurants, off of Chapman Ave. Parking can be tough if Starbucks gets busy. Reviews were somewhat hit or miss, it seemed like. I was so hungry I didn't mind. When I got there, I noticed how small the place was. There were only a couple of tables available for seating. The menu is clear and up top. Japanese pop music was playing. The server was kind but did not say much. He started out by asking if I wanted a bowl and how many scoops of fish. When I told him I wanted white rice, he scooped some in the bowl and checked with me if the amount was ok. I liked that. They have several types of fish to choose from. I got tuna, salmon, and yellowtail. I don't remember how the tuna was, but the yellowtail was not bad. I wasn't sure what sauce to choose, so the guy put in some miso and sesame shoyu. The mixture wasn't bad, but I think it could have been better or stronger. I think they have a limited variety of toppings, but I like that they include avocado. You would only have to pay additional $1 if you asked for extra avocado. Most other poke places will charge for getting avocado at all. I'm not sure I enjoy the vibe here. It seems to fit in with the other local businesses here in Orange. It's good for a quick lunch or dinner to go, but not a good place for sit down meals. Another poke place has set up shop in small center with Starbucks. More like 3.5 stars, but since their a new business, I'll round up. Their concept is about the same as other poke places where you choose 3 ($8.50) or 5 ($10.50) scoops of fish, a base of white or brown rice, salad, chips, or a wrap in soy paper. Your toppings include avocado, crabmeat, onions, and cucumbers which are all free. They have a lot of different seafood options which include salmon, tuna, spicy tuna, yellowtail, octopus, albacore, shrimp, or crabmeat. Then you choose your sauce which are spicy mayo, sesame shoyu, miso, or hot chili sauce. I opted for a bowl with three scoops over white rice with salmon, tuna, and spicy tuna and with a combination of the spicy mayo and shoyu sauce. I like that they give you free avocado here and it's not an extra cost. The sauce combination I chose really complemented each other and gave my bowl a slight spicy kick. Overall the bowl I had was good, but not the best. The fish seemed relatively fresh. I felt like the amount of rice they gave was a bit small. On their menu, they also have sides like seaweed, gyoza, miso soup, and different sushi rolls you can order. Service was very helpful and sweet. He even gave me a bowl of miso soup for being a first time customer. They also give you a stamp card where your 10th bowl will be free. This is a very small shop with maybe 7 seats inside and a couple tables outside if you opt to dine in. read more

Yeah, meh. Came in during the COVID-19 pandemic to get food to go. There were a couple people ahead of us and only one guy working the counter. It was slow. Staff was wearing masks and the guy making the bowls was courteous and changed gloves after every bowl. Portions were about what you would expect. To me the fish was not very good. Seems like it had been sitting for a while. One of the customers was not wearing a mask. Staff did not say anything to him. I kept myself and my son as far away from him as possible. It would have been good if the staff had asked the customer to wait outside and they could get his order and take it to him when it was his turn. Then again, the guy looked like he might make an issue of it and a shopkeeper doesn't really need that right now. Anyway, there are better places to get a poke fix. Pretty good! Small place inside with only 7 seats. Ordered a regular bowl $9 which came with 3 scoops of fish. I like the option of half and half chips and rice, because too much rice makes the meal bland. Got the albacore, salmon, and yellowtail. The salad portion was fresh and good. All the other fishes in the poke were fresh. For some reason the sauces lacked a rich flavor I'm used to at other places. This was a 'Just Ok' poké bowl. The shop is really tiny. I'm assuming this is more of a takeaway place anyway. They were following covid protocols and only allowed 4-5 people in the store at once. I arrived before noon and didn't have to wait long, once I left however, there was a growing line of customers from surrounding businesses. Approx. 5 more people, definitely a lunch spot. I ordered a large bowl w/t salmon, tuna, and yellow tail. I always get the house sesame or ponzu sauce on the fish and elect a spicier sauce on the side, in order to taste the seafood. That being said, the tuna had zero flavor. A warning regarding the freshness/quality of the seafood should have been the scallops on the line, they were looking very dry and even slightly browned on the edges. Another thing, once I paid I noticed about 4 bowls for call in/pick up orders just sitting on the counter. I don't know how long they were sitting there, but not a good look regardless. I was so lucky to have found this small hole in the wall one day just driving by! The poke burritos/wraps are to DIE for! I've been by three times and each time the food never disappointed! The gyoza are also VERY good and tasty. The older man is super nice and friendly and puts such a good portion of fish in my burritos! Service is great and even though there is no seating and parking can kind of suck on a busy weekend (especially with the Starbucks right there) I HIGHLY recommend stopping by! I'm not sure why this place is getting such rave reviews for their poke - maybe I went on a off-day? I came here for lunch on a Wednesday and other than one person ahead of me, this place was empty. The owners/workers are friendly - I'll give them that. The poke bowl - despite the many different offerings and toppings - seemed flavorless. I had three scoops of salmon, got all the toppings except for wasabi, and selected spicy mayo for the sauce. The fish tasted fresh, and it comes with your first scoop of avocado for free, but the bowl itself was flavorless. The only differences in the bowl was the texture of the different pieces - and I wasn't sick either, so I know it wasn't me. I was bit disappointed because I had recently transferred to a new workplace nearby and away from my favorite poke lunch spot (Poke Tiki near CHOC), and wanted to find a relatively decent place nearby. I'll probably give them another shot or maybe try their sushi rolls before I never look back - this immediate area has a lot of different options, but the owners/workers were friendly, so they definitely deserve a second visit. read more

Really delicious Poke bowls, fresh ingredients. However, I just had a very odd experience coming in at around 1:15 PM on a Sunday. There was only one young man working and he kept checking over his shoulder, and was clearly irritated. I asked how long it would take to make Gyoza, to which his replied that "I can't make it at all, because I'm supposed to be doing something else." He then kinda just pretended nothing was wrong but I realized he probably couldn't make anything on the menu...besides raw stuff, which was the poke bowls. This place is my go-to fast poke spot when I don't want to go far from home. I've been coming here for awhile now because the staff is very friendly and they have also been giving me free miso soup! They also have a cute water dispenser that has cold and hot water. The place is pretty small and there are about 2-3 tables. No restrooms. They were generous with the fish portions and the first scoop of avocado is included! The fish is usually fresh. They mix the sauce in with the fish so everything is evenly coated. This is my favorite poki bowl in the OC. It's hidden behind the Starbucks on Chapman across from Fred Kelly stadium. I don't eat meat so they offer tamago. It's so yummy. Their dressings are to die for.(half miso half sesame) My husband loves the spicy tuna and crab. It's always fresh. I would eat her everyday if they were opened on Mondays. This is hands down my favorite spot to grab lunch! The staff here are so nice and accommodating. My go to is the poki bowl as all of the fish is very fresh and the bowls themselves are very filling. They have a pretty good array of toppings and fish to choose from. The only downside is there are just a few tables outside to enjoy your meal at, but either way they keep pretty well on the drive home.
