I'm so glad I gave it another try. We returned last night and sat at the sushi bar for the omakase, and the entire experience was excellent. The service was warm, attentive, and welcoming, and the omakase was fantastic from beginning to end. Each piece was beautifully presented and thoughtfully prepared, with a great variety of fish, textures, and toppings. The fish tasted incredibly fresh, and several of the pieces were absolutely beautiful, especially the richer tuna and toro pieces and the delicate white fish. I also really enjoyed the traditional style of the experience. At the sushi bar, the first 10 pieces are chef's choice, and the focus is very much on the fish rather than elaborate American-style rolls. The progression of the omakase felt intentional, and it was fun seeing what would come next. Most importantly, the quality and service were completely different from the experience I wrote about all those years ago. It's only fair to update a review when a restaurant deserves it, and Ohshima absolutely did on this visit. We had a wonderful dinner and I would happily return. This was a complete turnaround for me and easily a five-star experience.

It wasn't busy and I can see why... Uni pasta was bland and lacked flavor but was a good size for $28. The green tea flan was grainy and overcooked where the bottom had a bread texture...$10 is a reasonable price but quality was poor. $3 hot green tea was fine. For 2 orders of 13 pc omakase, 1 hot green tea, 1 uni pasta, and 1 green tea flan, the damage ended up being just under $400 after tax and tip. Definitely overpriced for zero convos with chef nor waitress really other than to ask if we wanted to add anything else. Unfortunately, what used to be ohshima is no longer there and this restaurant that's in its place is not one I'd probably ever return to.

Once seated, the service was attentive and friendly throughout our meal along with a peaceful ambiance outside and more upbeat inside the restaurant. A few things aren't pictured, but the crispy tuna rice was SO good and perfect for sharing, and the shishito peppers were perfectly crispy. I ordered the blue crab hand roll, which was honestly one of the better ones I've had, along with the Devil Roll, which was light, fresh, and delicious. This is such a steal, especially considering how the omakase already comes with a piece of bluefin nigiri, but you can still choose to get more bluefin in your roll. My only criticism would be that they can go a little heavy on the wasabi sometimes, but that's more of a personal preference since I prefer to eat sushi without wasabi at all. We came at around 6:30 on a Thursday and got seated right away. Our server was very friendly and helpful. The restaurant is located in a strip mall, and parking was plentiful and easy. Kaarage: Would not order this again, it was probabably the thing we enjoyed the least from what we ordered. More like chicken nuggets and less like a classic Kaarage. Sushi Burrito: I always look for interesting things on the menu and got this. It tasted quite good but was also very "fusion" in the way it was plated and tasted. In soy paper with a large heaping of artificial crab. Softshell Crab: The best I've had in a long time, so well cooked and not oily. Ika-Uni: Squid and uni with a hint of wasabi, unique dish and delicious if you like squid and Uni. Seared Sea Bass Nigiri: We got this toward the end and it was amazing!

Some of the best I've had in the area considering how close it is located to competitors like Ooshima and Kaigen etc. The fish all came dressed, which was to be expected. It was all pretty delicious except it was all just a little bit sweet for my taste.. I prefer more savory, salty, or lemony. That being said, the quality made up for the preference in taste which could easily be remedied with some soy sauce, ponzu, lemon, etc. The bite of Wagyu nigiri was genuinely the best wagyu I've ever had. We also tried the mussels and agedashi tofu for hot appetizers. Would 100% recommend either dish. Overall, happy with the experience as wifey was a happy birthday girl. We did not have room to try any regular rolls so I cannot comment on that. The one negative thing I will say is to absolutely skip the handrolls - any of them. The machine compacted rice made a roll that should be delicate feel mishandled and ruined the texture/experience of that roll. Everything was unbelievably fresh and beautifully presented. The quality of the fish really stood out. We learned that the chef is extremely particular about his fish. If something comes in from a vendor and isn't up to his standards, he sends it back. He also doesn't cut the fish until you actually order it. After eating here, you understand why. The texture, temperature and freshness were on another level. We also had the scallops topped with uni and caviar , which were amazing, and the tuna toast was so simple but SO good. Honestly, there wasn't one thing we wouldn't order again. Lynn, the owner, was gracious and wonderful, she made us feel so welcome. Derek was our server and was equally wonderful and attentive.
