For my first drink, I'm having an All Fashion made with Bulleit Bourbon, lemon juice, simple syrup, Allspice Dram and Orange Bitters. This is good! It has a unique taste. No garnish though. For my first item. I'm having a bowl of miso soup. This is actually a soybean broth. Miso soup is a traditional Japanese soup made from a dashi broth mixed with miso paste, often including ingredients like tofu, seaweed (wakame), and scallions. This is good! It's nice and warm too! For my next item, I'm having a Green Garden Salad made with fresh iceberg lettuce, tomato and cucumber "drenched" in their "famous" ginger dressing. That is LOT of dressing! For an appetizer, we are having the Spicy Edamame. This is made with garlic butter, soy sauce and Japanese spice. Edamame is a popular Japanese appetizer of immature soybeans in the pod, typically boiled or steamed and served with salt. These are great! Some are really spicy! For another appetizer, we are getting the vegetable gyoza. Jiaozi (gyoza) are traditional Chinese dumplings made of minced meat or vegetables wrapped in a thin dough. Oh yeah! These are good! For my next drink, I'm having the Classic Manhattan. This is made with Woodford Reserve bourbon, sweet vermouth, Angostura bitters and brandied cherry. This tastes good but could use a garnish. For our sashimi, we are having the Sashimi Jalapeno made with jalapeno peppers over two pieces each of salmon, tuna and yellowtail finished with wasabi mayo. This is heaven! Wow! For our hand rolls, we are having a vegetable roll made with cucumber, avocado and asparagus; a peanut avocado roll; spicy tuna roll made with chopped tuna, spicy mayo and crunch; Philadelphia roll made with cream cheese, smoked salmon and cucumber. Boomer loves the smokey salmon! These are all great! They don't have their own restrooms; it is in the building (go down the stairs, then to the left under the stairs). They have AYCE and regular menu items. We came for AYCE, which you can order 3 rounds of, so make sure you order enough (but not too much, because you are charged for excessive leftovers). We only needed to order 2 rounds. They can get pretty busy, so it may take a bit to get your order, but they are good at making sure you get your whole order. The service is friendly as well. We ordered a large variety. The Age Tofu was pretty good as a general consensus, though most of the fried stuff was a bit too oily. The Kani Salad was pretty good (their spicy mayo is tasty). The fish is decent quality and fresh. Most of the sushi didn't have too much rice, which I liked. The rice held together well. Still, I prefered the "tataki" (sashimi with ponzu) over the sushi. I do wish they had a regular scallop sushi, as the spicy scallop sushi is a small piece of scallop with lots of spicy mayo and rice. The special rolls (we got Fancy Tuna, Enter the Dragon, Mango Tango and Spider Roll) are pretty heavy, as most of the flavor is from the sauces. You can order things without the dressing or sauces (see the house salad without dressing....yes, it's just lettuce lol) Make sure to save room for ice cream! My office once temporarily relocated near the Avon location, and that Pick & Mix was one of my main workday lunch spots for a while. Pick & Mix's bowls seem like a pretty healthy way to eat flavorful food. My wife and I decided to order takeout from the Glastonbury Pick & Mix, and to eat at the gazebo at Riverfront Park. I've known that Glastonbury had a Pick & Mix, but I didn't know where it was. Turns out it's in the same plaza as a bunch of other Glastonbury favorites I hadn't located. Zinneken's Belgian Waffles. Whole Deli. Harry's Pizza. El Pollo Guapo. This discovery was like the un-earned ending of a culinary "National Treasure", or even "National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets". Looking at the menu, I immediately wanted the spicy pork. It was outstanding. The pork almost seemed shaved and it had a spicy, flavor bomb of a marinade. It was WOW good. The vegetables, especially the tender leafy spinach, were the perfect compliment to the pork. It also had slivers of carrots and onions, and was topped with sesame seeds. I chose glass noodles as the side, and I swirled noodles into the main dish as I created room. Terrific, terrific dish. I also had to try a "Korean Style Hot Dog", when I noticed the sign. Yelp CT Community Manager Alex PT posted crazy cool photos of Korean hot dogs from NYC, and I've been intrigued ever since. Pick & Mix's version was not as elaborate. It looked like a basic corn dog on a stick, but, notwithstanding the name, there is no frankfurter involved. If I understand correctly, it's gooey mozzarella encased in a fried fish cake crust. The noodles were freshly made, springy and a little chewy but a great sauce vessel. the toppings were plentiful, the shoyu pork wasn't the most tender but the pieces were nicely charred and sauces to be distinct in the dish. The broth started off as straight seafood broth, lots of briny umami but little depth. Once I mixed the truffle scoop in, the flavor really bloomed. Now the broth had an earthy, mellow base note which made the broth a surf and turf umami bomb. It was very tasty, and the best ramen I've had in ct. Price is not bad, $55 for two bowls, add on wontons for the missus's soup and the appetizer. For the quality, the price is really good for what you get. The music is very classic Vietnamese. For my entree, I'm having a Vietnamese baguette or banh mi. This is made with pate de foie, egg yolk mayo, pickled radish, shredded carrots, cucumber, parsley and jalapeno on a crispy French roll. I am having the sliced BBQ chicken or banh mi thit bo nuong. That was delicious! It went down easy! These sandwiches are only $8.50 so I'm ordering another one to go! The second will be the Cold Meat Sandwich or banh mi thit nguoi which is a sliced cold pork roll. For takeout, my sister is getting the Yang Chau Fried Rice or com xao Duong Chau. The beef was cooked perfectly, it's tender but no completely falling off the bone (which will cause it to lose flavor), the beef tastes so yummy, well done! We did manage to order and food came out at a reasonable rate. We took pics and dug in. The spring roll was good. Had a good amount of shrimp and the peanut dipping sauce was earthy and sweet. The pork in the chashu ramen was tender and braised well, and the noodles were springy and fresh. The rest of the dishes? There were a lot of misses this time around. Chili Dumplings were very thick on the wrapper and lacked flavor and spice, the ramen broth lacked seasoning, the fried dumplings seemed out of the freezer, the egg in the ramen was overcooked, and the sausage special was dense, musky, and old. The sausage was almost to the point of being dangerous. There is good food that comes out of the kitchen, so long as you stick to the noodles only then you should be okay.
