The salad doesn't get any better than this. Easy to order online and food was good. Recommend to any who wants to eat a good salad.

Consistently fresh and dependable for decent fast food salads, calzones and small pizzas. This is a great location, and if you're visiting the Athenaeum, think of stopping if you want something simple. Their pizzas are surprisingly good. I've got no beef with Pockets and I'm not embarrassed to admit it. At first, I was sad when the Clark St location closed, but I've been ordering from this outpost for almost a year now and haven't had any problems. They're fast. Convenient. And somewhat healthy! My go-to delivery when I'm too busy to leave the house or I face a sad, empty fridge. No, it's not amazing... but hey, they're not trying to pawn themselves off as a foodie's dream. They do simple well, and keep it predominantly fresh. I've never had a problem with wilted lettuce anyway! I usually spring for the Southwestern chopped salad which comes with half a pocket. Large enough to make two meals, and cheap enough to keep me coming back for more. Every 10 orders you earn a $10 credit. I've cycled through two now, so yeah... I ordered a turkey pocket with just mayonnaise and lettuce. Seemed like a simple enough order. The guy behind the counter said that they don't have mayonnaise. I was shocked at first, but then I saw the five one gallon drums of mayonnaise on the shelf directly behind him. I pointed it out, and he said that it was for the salad dressing. I am a HUGE Pockets fan. And have been for more than a decade. Today I went to this store location on Lincoln and was totally underwhelmed by the food. I was competely grossed out by the dirty tables, dirty windows (from the inside), filthy bathroom (no soap either), etc... eeeeew!! Advertised as fast food, it turns out this joint is anything but. Now, I gave them a pass as I ordered a pizza. But others ordered salads and stuff and still had to wait more-than-fast-food amounts of time for their things. Plus, unlike fast food, the offerings are excessively expensive. It's mostly Italian style food that requires some prep time, so why not brand themselves that way rather than fast food, which they certainly are not? Oh, because it's Chicago and the city's Italian options have them easily crushed. Right. So hopefully if they advertise as something with less competition they can win some of that market share. Ew, I loathe Pockets. I used to work in the Athenaeum and got stuck eating there at least once a week. The bread tastes like cardboard, the sandwich stuffings are rarely if ever fresh, and the salads are always bland. In fact, there is a certain taste to everything served at Pockets: it all tastes like old, dead lettuce or something. The only good thing they serve is their clam chowder, which is still just good, not great. I'm still in this area pretty often but I always just go down the street to Jimmy Johns for a sandwich now that it's open. read more

We needed to stop somewhere quick for food before heading over to the Lincoln Tap Room for a friend's event. We wanted something hot and would've stopped at any fast food place if we had seen one... Unfortunately, we didn't pass one decent fast food joint once we got off the interstate! We review the menu... I decide on a calzone. The woman at the counter says, "15-20 minuites." and precedes to stare at me. I ask her if that's how long it will take to make my meal and she simply nods... My bff asks if all of the pockets are served cold. The woman says no. She asks if they can be toasted and the woman nods blankly. The guy next to the woman realizes what my bff is asking and says, "No, all of our pockets are served cold. The meat and the veggies are cold. There is no toaster." I then try to order some Dip Sticks. Bread sticks can't be hard can they? The woman says, "10-15 minutes." *sigh* I gave up, grabbed a bag of chips, and decided to eat later. The bff asked if there were any baked potatoes ready or if they had to be cooked too... Nobody answered her! Nowhere on the menu does it state that it will take a certain amount of time for them to prepare these menu items for you. This place present itself to be like Subway or Quinoz, not a sit down dining experience! Honestly, I don't think I'll ever try Pockets after this experience! I was at Pockets once a long time ago. It was a brisk spring day in 2001, not long before I graduated 8th grade. I had been to the district-wide spelling bee representing my school and had lost spectacularly (the word was "Himalayan". No one told me there would be proper nouns, dammit!) Before bringing me back to school, my parents took me to Pockets to cheer me up since it was nearby and purportedly healthy. It was awful, easily the worst cheering up ever. It's the worst kind of "health" food where the bread is gritty and everything is low-fat and completely flavorless. Most parents would have sprung for a sundae or something. Not mine! I never went back. Until now. Boyfriend and I were out running errands and wanted something quick that wasn't deep fried or in a bun. Stopped at Pockets thinking, that was a long time ago! I'm sure my tastes have matured. My tastes may have, but Pockets has not. This location was empty except for one guy sitting by the window nursing a Pepsi. We ordered from a nice but very unenthusiastic lady at the counter, then sat with our food as another employee mopped around us. At 2:30 in the afternoon. With a solution that smelled like ammonia. While we ate. Despite the cleaning, this place is filthy. And it's a bad sign when your business is buying its straws, napkins, and TP from Jewel (Essential Everyday, wassup). Are you just not doing enough business to order from restaurant supply, or did you run out and have to run out to Jewel? The food is as bad as I remember, except the bread, since now I like gritty hearty breads with a lot of protein. But it's very dry and needs butter, so I guess there goes your low-cal meal. The chicken is the pre-cooked pre-chopped kind that comes in a sealed plastic bag. And the minestrone soup I had was on par with the icky Campbell's Selects minestrone soup. I don't think i've had this ambivalent of an experience in a while. There was nothing they did wrong, but nothing really all that right either. It was just was I was driving by and felt like stopping in since some sort of sandwich was needed. I got a southwest chicken pocket and some chicken chili. The "pocket" was really just a giant chicken salad with corn and beans along with a whole wheat roll. They gave some chipolte sauce too and it was pretty meh. The chili was okay, i've had better. I babysit and the mother orders this food for dinner for the kids (and me if i can't convince her "im not hungry") It's NASTY. The calzone is basically inside out Domino's pizza but stuffed into an entire loaf of bread. Picture a bread football. Their food is all bread. Pockets is sorta a healthy alternative to fast food that can take a lot longer. They are named after their signature dish, a calzone pocket filled with veggies, meats and cheese. They also have salads, baked potato dishes and soups. It can take a while for them to prepare the pockets, so it is good to call ahead for carry-out orders. I can relate to all the negative reviews of this place. When I first tried pockets about 3 years ago I thought it was disgusting and vowed to never go back. Fast forward to 6 months ago. I was REALLY feeling the lunch pressure. Basically, I was tired of jimmy johns and looking for a place to get some fiber and a semi-healthy lunch. My coworker mentioned pockets and I cringed. But, he talked me into it. I was way surprised! Maybe I built this place up in my mind as the worst of the worst and hence was pleasantly surprised when they didn't serve me cat vomit, but I'm thinking that its more likely that the food is just pretty good. I eat here probably around once a week and I'm always happy with what I get. I've never had a calzone from here though. I always get the small salad that I can design myself. If you go this route, get the greek dressing! Its delicious! For a relatively small price you get a HUGE salad -- the small usually lasts me two days. Oh man. I really just love this place. If you like chopped salad and warm delicious bread, you have to try this place. It's bursting with veg with really quality dressings, too. I tend to get the Popeyes pocket with Italian dressing. It has spinach, mushroom, swiss, tomato, bacon, green peppers and carrots. The swiss has this buttery taste and the whole wheat pocket is always fresh and warm and more like a baguette than a pita. It's like a warm blanket on a cold day. A warm edible blanket. No, I'm not sure what I mean by that. Today, I broke from tradition and added avocado. Er mer gersh. It was like, amazing. I also sometimes get the Greek dressing. That is also great. I have kinda been eating here for awhile. In fact, when I was in the hospital after giving birth, I demanded a Popeyes pocket. That's how much I love it, ok? I wanted to love the hell out of this place. So much so that I endured its crappy food on not one, not two, but THREE occasions. Why the pockets suck: 1. It's mostly bread and hardly any other ingredients. 2. They're dry (Dip it in sauce or dressing you say? Well that kind of takes the point of eating healthy out of the equation, huh?) 3. 2 stars = "Meh. I've experienced better." And pretty much sums up this place. I had walked by Pockets a zillion times and never went in until yesterday for lunch. Why they are getting 2 stars is that the "pocket" is this HUGE piece of doughy bread that over takes the entire sandwich with flavor. I'm Italian and I love my carbs, but this is seriously too much. I enjoyed the "side salad" which is the 5 toppings you ordered on the side of your sandwich as the pocket is over $8 with tax; but they should tell you they're going to do that--what if I only ordered one topping? Love pockets but their website for online ordering is typically missing the checkout button. So after I spend 20 minutes looking through the menu, collecting everybody's orders with special individual toppings and sides, and drinks, I get to the checkout page and there's no checkout button. This happens all the time. I always end up calling in the order only to have the Manager, Javier, who says, "I don't know what you're talking about. I see the checkout button right here online." I'll preface this openly admitting I might be wrong about something. But when I hear "quinoa bowl" I think hot food. Not cold food. I hear quinoa bowl and my mind thinks of a rice bowl but with quinoa. Rice bowls are hot, so quinoa bowls would be hot, no? Apparently no. I was very excited that pockets offered a design your own quinoa bowl only to discover that their bowls are served as cold or colder than a salad. The veggies inside aren't cooked veggies but raw ones. I was picturing a bowl of hot quinoa with cooked veggies and meat. But I got cold quinoa, raw veggies and cold chicken. Was this advertised ANYWHERE on their site? Not that I could find. I tried to nuke it in my microwave but it really wasn't responsive. Also, as others have stated in other posts, this place is anything but fast. Like I said - this was my assumption and maybe I'm wrong. Maybe quinoa bowls are supposed to be cold but wow was I surprised. Maybe that should be advertised on the dish description. I can't be the only person who thinks the bowls are cooked, hot food. Also, we live nearby so we chose pick up. It told us the order should be ready in 20 minutes. To be safe we waited 30 before walking over. Our order wasn't ready and we had to wait an additional ten minutes. If the placed had been packed I wouldn't have considered this out of place, but there was only one patron inside with at least five employees working. I wanted to like this place so much as I am a massive fan of any restaurant that allows you to customize your orders so much. If you are looking for a good calzone, then you have found the right place. I have eaten at this location for several times and it is only here that I have tasted and experienced the "real" delicious, hearty and satisfying calzone in the city. The chicken is tender. The veggies are fresh. The cheese is really cheesy. Calzone really tastes homemade. They also have a pretty interesting menu, which you would surely like. Though the restaurant doesn't evoke any Italian or Mediterranean atmosphere just like other similar places, I would still recommend pockets for their delicious food and smiling staff. read more
