The trip over there is a little bit of a hassle, and we were almost turned away (more on that in a minute). Once we finally got seated, the experience was great. First, the positives - The pizza came out piping hot and was incredible. The crust had a caramelized, crispy edge, and it was super rich, filling, and flavorful. It may not look like a large portion when it gets delivered to the table, but boy, you get full fast here. My wife loved it too! Our server was friendly and took great care of us, and I liked the atmosphere inside a lot. The exposed brick walls and old-school neighborhood pizza-joint gives it a lot of character. The only downside was our first interaction at the front. We didn't have a reservation, and the hostess we initially spoke with was surprisingly rude about it, to the point that we actually left for a second. We thought about it, talked about how far out of our way we had to come to get there amongst ourselves, and decided if we couldn't eat in, we'd place a takeout order instead. So we came back to place a takeout order, and thankfully we got to speak with another host, who was much more helpful and eventually got us seated inside. Rough start aside, the pizza was excellent and worth the trip, provided you have a reservation.

After all, the high reviews and raving comments about their deep dish were enough for me to travel far to try. Upon being seated, my waiter forgot my water after he said he would go get it. He refused to make eye contact with me for the rest of the night and would not look in my direction. At one point, I yelled excuse me but he kept walking away. Eventually, I was given another waiter to help me. I find it weird that my previous waiter was continuing to serve the tables around me, take orders, bring them their drinks and food, but I was the only one who got switched to someone else. The new waiter and I had no problems at all, but it made me feel so conflicted about continuing my meal here. When you try to confront staff members and the manager about the possibility of discrimination from their waiter, expect that everyone will give you excuses and no resolution whatsoever. Tell me why a waiter would stop serving a specific customer and then continue to serve everyone else around? Would YOU as a customer feel comfortable to stay and eat? I would not. And when you try to ask for an explanation, all that's said to you is: "he's in training" And when you try to ask for a name to write a formal complaint: "we don't know his name". Hmm. Okay. Sure. Do better, Lou Malnati's Pizzeria. I am appalled by the blatant disregard and lack of explanation for why a waiter would pass off a customer and continue to serve tables next door with NO explanation. Pizza was okay, but nothing worthwhile and with staff treating patrons like this, I would not bother coming here. Service is abysmal.

We started with the Greek salad and flatbread, and they were just as delicious as I remembered. The salad is HUGE--I'll come back to that. For the table, I ordered the half-pound pot pie pizzas. You're given three options: sausage and mushroom, sausage without mushroom, or mushroom only. The first time I visited, I was brought there by a Muslim couple who didn't eat pork. Although I'm not Muslim, I also don't eat pork, and another person in our group doesn't eat mushrooms. We were able to find pot pie options that worked for everyone. I also remember the menus telling the interesting history of the area, including the connection to the Valentine's Day Massacre across the street. That history and character seem to have disappeared as well. When the pizza arrived, I honestly thought a frozen pizza would have tasted better. The sauce tasted like Ragu spaghetti sauce soup, with two nearly raw, completely UNSEASONED whole mushrooms floating in it. It was horrible. Because I don't eat pork, I needed an alternative for the meat. What I received were two DRY, OVERCOOKED, well-done, flavorless hockey pucks disguised as "meat patties" that I was expected to crumble into my pizza. Not one of the five people at our table liked their pizza. My brother, who has also visited this restaurant several times said the pot pie was not how he experienced in the past. At that point, a few of us agreed that we might come back for the salad and flatbread, but the pizza was a complete miss. Then things got worse! As we were getting carry-out containers to take home the remainder of our food--with hopes of somehow doctoring up the pizza in our kitchens--we divided up the leftover salad and flatbread. Our server gave us two condiment containers for the salad dressing. (There are two different dressings that you mix and drizzle over the salad.) We packed up our food, and there was enough salad and bread left for at least two more people. So we asked for additional containers for the dressing. That's when we were told there was a limit of TWO dressing containers per table. WHAT??!!! Even Italian Garden will give you as much dressing as you need without making you feel like you're being upsold to PURCHASE the dressing. At that point, all five of us agreed: the salad and flatbread were good, but they weren't good enough to make us want to return. The watery pizza soufflé and container policy, was a disappointment and turnoff. What I remembered as a unique, memorable Chicago dining experience now felt overrated and more like a tourist trap. It was $250 wasted. I'll also be sharing this experience on my social platforms as well. Honorable mention: The glasses slide around due to the unevenness of the tables (not the booths) and the condensation underneath the drinks. Spend money on the uneven light fixtures outside of your establishment and the rickety tables. Just a thought.
