Okay, so I wanted to try this place for a while, but this was a weird one.
The food smelled good (I love mexican) from the parking lot, and I had high hopes when I left my car. I walked in with a party of five, and came upon the host...on his cell phone. He wasn't of mexican descent, which struck me as a little odd for a mexican place, but I shrugged it off. Anyway, we waited, and waited, and waited...
The host kept smiling at us and holding a finger up as if to say "just a minute," but it really got ridiculous when I got closer and overheard his conversation. Apparently this guy was trying to book himself for an open mic comedy night, and this was more important than seating the customers? My friend Jeff eventually got fed up, walked right by the guy, and we got seated by someone else. Totally uncool first impression.
We ordered some drinks and a big shareable nacho platter - I thought it was pretty good. The menu is pretty big and had some nice variety. I got some chicken burritos for my entree. The meat was a little tough, but overall I liked my meal. My buddies seemed to like their food as well, but then, it happened again!
The host from before went to clear the table behind us, and what do we hear? Ring, ring! The guy sits down and answers a cell phone call at the table behind us. I honestly thought we were on an episode of Mystery Diners, or a prank show or something.
The host was LOUDLY rambling about another comedy show, apparently he was removed from the bill and wasn't happy about it. We all just stopped eating and stared at him. He had no idea we were even looking! The host must not be very good at his other job in addition to this one. I heard the host say "I headlined a nursing home last week, what are your credentials?" at one point. I got up to use the bathroom, came back, and he was still there! Finally he got up, cleared the table without wiping it, then stormed off. My group just shared a look and cracked up.
I was ready to forego dessert and get the heck out of there, but my friend Vicki is nuts for fried ice cream. I had a bite, and it was tasty! They do a nice job here, but there is an obvious weak link on the staff! I asked our server about the host before we left - apparently the guy spends most of his time either talking on the phone, or surfing message boards for negative comments about his comedy. Weird!
I will say, he did make me laugh on the way out. As we walked by his station, he was telling another customer how his honorary mexican name is "puto" at the restaurant. I'm assuming he's never looked up the definition. read more
