I've only been to Plato's Closet once before. I bought a pair of Lululemon shorts that I never would have paid full price for. They were cheap and comfortable. Returned today to sell some clothes that I planned to just donate. Brought six pieces, I think half had tags on still. The brands included Lex Breezy, Yireh, Fighting Eel, and Ari South. They took all six pieces for $47.50. I was happy. I gave it to my husband so he could buy our lunch with it. Someone mentioned in a review that they might discount your purchase if you sold clothes. Maybe I misunderstood because they don't. I bought two sweatshirts. My daughter wanted a BLACKPINK 2022 tour sweatshirt and I got what was tagged as All in Motion (Target brand?). No clue since the actual sweatshirt had no tags on it. It just looked like a well loved, favorite hoody with no logo. Got both for $20. Everyone was pleasant enough. Overall it was a pleasant experience. You can't be offended if they don't take your clothes. Don't expect this to be a money making venture. Just think of it as an alternative to donating your clothes. If they take it, great. If they don't, then drop it off at Goodwill, Savers or Salvation Army. I decided to test my luck one day and came in to Plato's to sell some clothes. I was pretty optimistic and hoped for the best turnout despite hearing from people that they don't really give you anything money wise and turn you away even if you have good brand clothes overall. But i chose to see for myself which i did , the process was pretty straightforward and quick and easy , i filled out the form and the girl said she'd call me when they finished looking through my items. And said they'd be done in 10-15 minutes , no problem I decided to walk around and check out their selections of clothes and items they had. I must say they had cute tops and nice styles that I'd wear or that I normally wear on a daily basis , I'll give them that. So selection wise for clothes , they're doing their big one with that. I noticed for heels when i looked at the shoes ( I would never buy second hand shoes from here or anyone for that matter but it was just there ) , it was a pair of Coach brand heels. Super cute and gave off early 2000s vibes , when i picked up the shoe to see the sizing i noticed the bottom of the heel bursted out with stuffing. And I thought to myself that's odd that they took those heels in despite the condition that it was in. But i did notice as well for regular oversized t shirts , they were a bit worn down. And some were priced at ridiculous prices and stained. 10-15 minutes had passed and i went to check on my bag of clothes , apparently they did go through it quickly , but they didn't even bother to let me know or say anything until i went to check on them. So there's that.. mind you i brought in good brands which were in excellent mint condition ( Adidas , Champion ) and a few other brands. They ended up only taking one of my adidas shirts and a workout sweatshirt from the brand Legend, that still had a tag on. The girl working only offered me $5.. $5 for BOTH OF THEM. . I was like flabbergasted and said to myself "Wtf". Everyone knows Adidas is a good brand and pretty on the pricey side.. to even offer $5 for that is absolutely diabolical. Especially when it was in amazing condition , fairly brand new since I didn't even wear it. And Legend is pricey as well and it was brand new with tags , so that totally caught me off guard. I personally think the girls who work here don't give a sh*t, and are there to take up space or just to pass time. They were all chit chatting and doing their own thing. They even denied four people who came in after me and didn't bother looking at their bag of clothes they bought. I probably never will sell here again especially wasting my time for a petty $5 bill. Yes , it's better than $0 , but I brought in good clothes and that's that. Besides , the champion shirt I brought it in and adidas , looked far more better than the adidas and champion shirts they had hanging up on the racks that were tearing apart and hanging by a thread. The girls here don't know what they're doing with their jobs. I think they just take or don't take anything that you offer to sell and throw you a petty dollar and call it a day. I also noticed now making this review others had similar if not the same experiences as me.. lesson learned though. Fair game. I will only return to possibly shop since they had clothes i wear. Selling wise? Hell to the no. Never again.. if you got this far take it from me .. DON'T BOTHER SELLING HERE. Happy Earth Month... As I try to condense and pare down and accept the unwanted items that are still in good condition and see if I'm able to find a better home that someone will love and not putting in the landfill. Plato's Closet is a great way to do so as they will purchase your items though mind you they are pretty full so are now pretty selective with your items. Many are targeted for teens and younger crowds with that are searching for specific brands and styles. The process is easy you check in with your iD and information and wait until you see your name on the chalkboard to which they will go over with the items they have chosen and you do still have the option to sell your items to them on this visit they seem to have wanted my eco bags which I had a bunch that they now are still in excellent condition along with some shoes. If you do find items there as well the money you receive from them items you just sold will go into a discounted price which makes it a win win in these situation and not filling the landfill with items that could have been avoided. Went recently to bring in some of my clothes, a lot of them were unused or used less than 5x, some with tags too. When I saw my name on the board, they did not take anything at all, and mind you, the clothes I brought in were in great condition, super cute for what girls wear nowadays, maybe even better than what they had in stock when I was looking around. SELECTION -- I've been to other Plato's Closet locations in the continental U.S. and find that the selection at this Honolulu location doesn't even measure up their selections. It's a bit disappointing to see racks of SHEIN and clothes with no brand label (which I just assume is SHEIN or any brand of similar quality). You could find some popular name brands like Aritzia, Lululemon, etc here and there but most clothes are just of low quality. VALUE -- Brands that are known to be more expensive tend to be on the higher end (starting from around $12 or $14 and can go upwards of around $25-$30 for a single article of clothing. I've seen some brand new shoes (with price tags) such as Vans selling for half the market price. SERVICE -- There would be at least two workers behind the counter and only one would ring up orders at a time, even if there are multiple people ready to pay. I feel like it would be more efficient if there were more than one ringing up orders at a time. read more

I got a Tommy Bahama Men's shirt here for a good price which is good. I also noticed a lot of Shein clothes which is a turn off for sure. Shein is already cheap and I would never buy it used elsewhere other than the site. Shein was its usual going price or more here at Platos, really odd. Also, tried to sell my dresses- one with tags still on and one without-and I wouldve took any price but Platos rejected both dresses. read more

Poor service when it comes to selling. The amount of time they take to inspect items does not add up, like they're rushing. It's as if it depends on who is inspecting it and what their personal style is. Selection is limited for guys as they only have around 4 half racks of clothes. read more

I went in on a Saturday afternoon, multiple people including me came in selling their clothes, but went back out because they couldn't take anymore bags?? Worker said come back in another hour. Uhm..they don't pay any mind to care for customers at all. Imagine going out of your way to bring things in just for them not to take it. I just went ahead and not waste any more time. It's fine they'd probably wouldn't even take everything and give me $5. Too bad for them, I had some Brandy in good condition. I wanted to see if all the reviews were right (THEY WERE). Did anyone think Plato's Closet would be filled with white tunics and gold leaf crowns? I was probably hoping that. But nope, no white tunics, sorry. Plato's Closet is a secondhand, buy and resell store. It mainly accepts brand name clothing that is fairly new and "in style" with the younger generation. In other words, what sells the quickest. Did Socrates approve? Plato's Closet is located at the corner of Beretania and Piikoi St. in a small lot with Territorial Savings Bank with a decent amount of parking. Entrance is from Beretania. I brought my wife here as she had clothes to sell. The clerk said the buyback amount is 60-70% off retail and a third of that value is what you get back. Obviously, you're not selling your clothes here to make money with that amount. It's an alternative to donating your clothes down the street at Goodwill. Getting cash now vs. tax break later. I haven't been here in a very long time. I was going to say 10 years, but apparently, that's how long Plato's Closet has been open. The inside looks the same as I remembered with a majority of women's clothing, but still a decent amount of Men's. The store is very organized and easy to browse. Prices range from $7-12 for shirts, and $18-22 for Levi's jeans, which is about half off from Macy's when it's on sale. Only interesting thing was a 2005 Pro Bowl XXL Reyn Spooner shirt, but I wouldn't wear it. That one can go to the vintage store. Overall, Plato's Closet is a nice option to get rid of unwanted clothes if you're looking for physical cash in hand rather than donating them down the street for intangible tax deductions, and a nice option to purchase "gently used," brand name clothing. The staff here were very nice, helpful, and informative. I'm ready to declutter some of my things at home, and Plato's Closet is a good place...if I actually find anything that's with the current trend. read more

If you're bigger than a size 6, and you're not bringing clothes that look like they came from Fashion Nova, you're better off going to the Salvation Army or Goodwill and getting the write off for your donation. They took one pair of American Eagle jeans from my 3 bags after waiting about 2 hours. $7. Tried to sell some old work clothes here but they didn't want them. After walking around and checking out their clothes I realized my clothes were too formal it wasn't their style. They were looking for something more cute and casual. It only took them a few minutes to inspect my clothes it was pretty quick. As a buyer I could tell why people like this store. They have a great variety of selections including bikinis, yoga pants, sports bras, backpacks, etc. Everything was clean and in great condition. You couldn't really tell those are used items. First off I am a regular that buys from this store alot. Prices are fair and great selection. Staff is usually cool and nice people. Today, i must have had new girl helping me at register. From moment i walked up to the register super attitude and NO personality whatsoever. I mean I really dont care if you like me or not, but your working retail so fake it. It was an interesting place with cool clothing! I couldn't sell any of mine to them because they don't buy high end clothing. So I had to throw my Gucci, Chloe, Prada second hand clothing back into my car trunk. It's okay though. I had a fun time looking through their unique collection! The service was fine. The employees were courteous and attentive. This is about their selections. I went to sell a bag of clothing. Jean shorts, tanks, running shorts etc. my brands were Nike, Gap, Levi, Old Navy and Target. The majority of these items in like new condition, all clean, spot free and unfaded. While they looked through my bag I browsed the store. They have many cheap brands in stock with lots of synthetic fabric. Many off brand jeans and tops. I think the manager should talk with them about the quality of the items that they take. She stated they were overstocked on the items I brought in, fair enough, but when I looked through the jeans and jean shorts there were very few quality items. The running shorts the same thing. Many off brand shorts, mine were Nike. The store was orderly enough but I think if I was buying secondhand clothes I would have the same selection as any Goodwill in town. read more

I was having a bad night and the boy ringing me up asked how my night was going, fast forward, he told me life has ups and downs and was very sweet.. It was unexpected but it made my whole night .. One of the girls, I think she had blackish-blue hair?? Complimented me and told me yellow was my color! I didn't have much interactions with the pink one, but she looked like she was working hard... Decided to come here to see what I would get for some clothes that are too big for me now. - a Spydr jacket, a few Levi's 514 Jean that was newly new, 2 of them were actually new. A couple A&F shirts with tags on them., a light weight packable A&F puffy jacket. As I waited for my turn, I see in their white board that they need men's clothing more than women's. I look around the store and looks like 90% are women's clothes. I waited about 10 mins until it was my turn. The worker who assisted me was very nice and helpful. Apparently there were other clothes dropped off and needed to be reviewed before mines. This was maybe around 1030 after they just opened for the morning . I was told to come back around noon, my clothes should be reviewed by then and see which one they will take. I didn't mind coming back since I had other things to do. Around 1230 I called and was told mines haven't been checked yet and to come back at 2pm. ok, no problem. Got back to the store at 230pm. The worker went over which items they would accept. It was to my surprise they decided to buy 4 items at & $30. Really!?! That Spydr jacket was $200 and only used during the winter while vacationing on the mainland. Those Levi Jeans are like $70 each. And then A&F button shirts were around $50. $30!?... I was like, sure I'll take it. ‍ come on! For items that are nearly new AND new, brand names I'd expect to get a bit more. They're not the types that was the 90's trend either. It is what it is. At least I didn't just give it away to Goodwill or something.. $30 went towards gas. read more

Was so excited to see a Plato's closet in Waikiki. However, shopping here was not the greatest experience. It was fairly messy. You can see they've tried to put things in order but the categories are a bit confusing and I found a lot of items in the wrong size area so ultimately, if you want to find something, you increase your luck by actually looking through the entire rack, not just your size range. The reason I wouldn't be likely to return is because the staff here. There were quite a number of shoppers in there with me (about ten others that I could see) and someone was trying to flag a staff for the change room. There were so many staff but no one to manage the fitting rooms?? They were just chatting behind the counter and giggling away. I love that they love working together and they're just making the best of their shift, but it's a bit annoying for the customers to have to keep flagging down staff for help. They weren't very welcoming either... A little annoyed seeming. Maybe I was just there on an off day? Can't really comment on the clothes here since product depends on what gets brought in. But it did look like most the items are for a very specific body type and style. Not suited for everyone... And then some incredibly dated items. All in all, It's a good place to kill time and try your luck, but just don't expect to be helped and do expect to have to rummage through everything. read more

I love coming here because there's always new stuff to see. Trying on wacky clothes is my favorite thing to do with friends coming here. I've gotten so many great pieces here for less than $5. The staff are super friendly every time! I dropped off a few bags of stuff to sell, and by the time I was done shopping around and trying on, it was all processed. My visit was a couple of days ago but it stood out to me enough to make a review. The staff was amazing!!! The music was great, it always is when I go in and they even play some throw-backs so i could enjoy while my daughter was shopping around. There is a good selection of clothes that are good with all styles and I can always find things here for both my daughter and I at great prices. Whenever I come in I notice the workers laughing and getting along well which i appreciate in a work environment because they're easy going with the customers too! I saw one employee having a hard time with the girl who was trying to return an item that exceeded the return period. As a long time former retail worker, watching the customer try to debate and override the policy was stressing me out; But alas your employee kept true to the policy and kindly pointed out in detail and reiterated "if we were to make an exception to our policy with you, everyone will expect the same treatment." THANK YOU! Time and time again i've seen many stores pick and choose when they enforce their policy but i applaud this girl for exhibiting kindness with the customer while still respecting the rules your store has. I requested to open a room with the same girl after my daughter and i were ready to try on and she was more than happy to get a room and guided us to the fitting room and even brought over some jeans my daughter ended up buying because we'd mentioned we were looking for no rip jeans for her new work place. I am leaving this review as a shopper (not selling clothes) I used to be a regular here because it was so much fun finding great deals, but more recently the selection has seriously gone downhill and the prices have gone up. On a few occasions in the past, I was able to scoop up Tory Burch, Banana Republic, BCBGMaxAzria pieces for under $15. Now, a ton of the inventory is made up of Shein and H&M for the same price. I overheard one of the workers telling a woman who brought in her clothes that they sell the items at half off what they cost retail. Ironically, as he said that I happened to be looking at a pair of slippers that suggested otherwise... I came in the evening time, looking forward to start the year off with some winter cleaning out of the closet and I was prepared to sell my clothes and handbags to PC. It was only like 5 items. This wasn't my first time selling clothes here but i must say, the last time that i was here to sell my clothes (which was a few years ago), they really do lowball you when they make an offer. In general, the store is neat and clean: their clothing is ROYGBV which is nice. It'd Almost easy to find the different styles of clothing you're looking for (except the tops, not sure how the tops are organized... they were just everywhere in different locations of the store). When selling an item, you need to present a valid ID, fill out brief paperwork before they proceed to evaluate your items. First, they stop taking in items @7p, one hour prior to their closing time. Anyways, This time around, I wanted to sell 2 pieces of clothing (from Victoria's Secret) & 3 handbags (one from Victoria's Secret & 2 from ALDO). Unfortunately, NONE of those popular and trending brands aren't up to par with PC. "We're not accepting any of these items because they're not in style right now." ... UMMM... so should i come in the Summer because they're more of summer clothing? But it seems like HIs' forecast on the daily always has a bipolar weather (atleast most days of the week) so my 2 pieces of clothing shouldn't have been an issue. To continue, My handbags were gently used and still had its shape. Still, they did not take in the fashion sense. It was worth (actually not worth, lol) a try being that the 1st time around when i sold my 7 pieces of clothing here a few years ago, that they only offered me like $12 total. What in the world. Every time I've come here I managed to sell an item or two. The service is usually good and the wait time isn't too bad. However today, I didn't have the best seller experience. Thin female employee with short hair (ponytail) bangs with blonde highlights came off a bit rude. When I came in with a bag of clothes, she noticed but didn't address me. She was helping another customer so I understood and waited patiently. But when the customer in front of me was taken care of, she loudly said "next customer" and didn't acknowledge/direct me. There was no one else in line ... She walked away. Then, when I saw my name on the board I didn't know which side of the counter (there are two registers) so I waited where I saw a line, out of consideration for others. When it finally reached me, I told the girl, who was unfriendly to me yet again, that my name was on the board. She mumbled something and pointed to the other side. It felt like she had something against me for some reason because she was friendly and helpful to other customers. I didn't take it too personally but it made me feel uncomfortable. Another employee, male with light brown, long curly hair noticed me and helped me out. I could tell he works really hard. He was helping all the customers and assisting his coworkers. He set up customers' dressing rooms, pulled off clothes from mannequins for those that asked, greeted everyone with a smile and informed customers of a reward system I was never aware of until today. He was very upbeat, friendly and hardworking. There was a third employee who I presumed was a manager/supervisor. I believe his name was Travis. He was nice and helped guests. Very stylish too. Just one bad-ish apple. Will come back though. Overall, a good place to check out. I can understand why some of the reviews are low. But I still think it's a worth a visit. read more

THEY NEED NEW EMPLOYEES! They are setting the store up for bad business with their attitude. Plato's closet has one employee who was very rude. Me and my sister were putting on our clothes because we heard they were closing 5 hours earlier. An employee knocked on the door (was wearing a red and black jacket and was on the heavier side). I told her sorry we are trying to be as fast as possible. We were trying to put our clothes on and maybe 30 seconds passed and she knocked on the door again. When she told us they were closed she had an attitude in her voice. There were two really nice employees though. One was an asian girl super sweet and helped us out with the dressing room and a guy who held the door open. If you want to go here hopefully the girl that was mentioned is fired.
