I've never been a Fighting Eel girl, but then you get one item as a gift, you decide to check out the store, and all of a sudden you're waiting for their next drop and constantly checking their store. I got a FE diaperbag as a gift but had NO IDEA how to use it - it's an older version with the bassinet attachment. It was from an aunty, NWOT, and I don't mind it didn't have tags, or that it's an older version. I've always been the kind of girlie to thrift shop because I'm not a fan of what the clothing industry has done to our planet. This is why we went to FE-Kapolei in the first place: for someone to help us figure out how to use this thing. Read my review for the Kapolei location to know what happens next. Anyways, since that first visit, I visited FE a bunch of times because of their baby clothes. One reason I'm also not a FE person is the prints are too much for me. Put it this way, the only print I would kind of consider wearing is the simple fish print in black, no other colors! And then next thing you know, there's also a baby section as well for my son! Having a baby changes you, I'll still thrift for my clothes, but I wouldn't mind getting my son the newest clothes from a locally owned, woman ran business. Also, I LOVE being able to text the store and reserve items, no driving all the way to find out it's not there! And the quality of the clothes is definitely there. Decided to buy a baby onesie for our family photos and another baby onesie for our friends who are pregnant. I know baby clothes don't last long, but I just couldn't help myself! Overall, I may only like a couple things from FE, but the fact that it's supporting local is a big plus for me! Also, the quality of the clothing is so great considering the price. read more

They are on Manaola pricing level and feel like making clients spend money on the only bag option they have.. then don't want to help with anything outside of that. Is been awhile since I browse their store, but I want to get some gifts so decide to stop by. Same old store as I remember. But service was okay, or maybe that sale associate who helped me was new? She didn't explain the story behind design of an item I purchased nor to have more customer service engagement. I am not sure if the owner expect her associates to have good customer service. Second, she didn't let me check the items unless I requested. What if the item is chip or broken? It would be super embarrassing especially is a gift. Lastly, she didn't explain to me they only have one size of shopping bag ($3) nor ask if I want different color (which I saw another associate ask the customer if she want green or pink) maybe if you have a profile with them or like a regular customer, they will treat you better. This is hands down my favorite boutique in all of Honolulu and my favorite location by far. Fighting Eel has the most beautiful prints and designs and their price point definitely aligns with the quality of their clothing. The customer service that Lauren and her team provide is phenomenal. From assisting with exchanges or small fixes to jewelry or clothing, they've always gone above and beyond to be hospitable and provide excellent communication and solutions. Good customer service means having a friendly smile and making eye contact while speaking with the customer. Not talking with your back facing them. I went into this store as a 1st time customer since I admired their clothing that I saw on IG. Yes, the entrance door is kept locked so you'll need to be let in, assuming someone notices you standing at the door. I browsed around and tried on a few items but it didn't fit me just right so I told the worker it didn't work out. The workers in the store did not seem too interested in helping me find something or just being of assistance. They seem off putting and disinterested. The whole experience is enough for me not to return to this business. 2 stars for their clothing and cute totes but I do not recommend. There are other local clothing stores to try. read more

I used to shop at fighting eel a lot. Like I've spent thousands of dollars at their locations over the years and even bought Ava sky when it was sold at Nordstrom years ago. Over the years, I've kind of migrated to other local designer stores like Manaola and Mahina Made. I would say I go to the Kailua location the most. I rarely find myself downtown, but today I was waiting to pick up a friend and thought I'd check out the larger selection at the downtown location since I had time to kill. I was also looking for some new dresses for an upcoming summer Europe trip. After finding steeet parking (there is no lot), it was awkward to walk up to a locked door. When I saw that it was locked, I then read the sign on the door saying it is locked during business hours and they will open it for you to come in. This seems like a fire violation. I'm pretty sure businesses shouldn't have locked doors during business hours in case of... you know, a fire. Since I was wanting to do some damage... I wanted to like touch the material and go through the racks, and I had just finished an iced tea, I asked very nicely if there was somewhere I could throw away my empty cup. Lol. The sales girl said no. They don't take food trash. Lol. Wtf. I had to ask to be allowed to be let out. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be back to this location. I'm a little concerned for my safety and I think it's just poor customer service not to have trash cans haha. Ridiculous. read more

Customer service is definitely not a priority. At nine months pregnant, got the door locked in my face. I thought the worker was rushing to help me open the door, but no, rushed to lock the door. So I stood there and rang the bell because I was there an hour before closing time. Another worker stopped vacuuming to come and see what I needed, a simple exchange for a larger size. She said she couldn't do that because the registers were closed. So, I guess their hours posted are wrong. Sad and surprised to read all the negative reviews about the Kahala store; sales associates are very good at this location. Beautiful clothes and everything else they sell too; love their bags & all the cute accessories too. I recall reading about their start, when Fighting Eel was born. Now, I only read about one owner; at any rate, I'm all for supporting local. I do not like the return policy however. When You spend an arm and two legs and You change your mind on an item, as long as it's unworn , tags remain & you've got your receipt, you're within 14 days (for Me it's just a day later) you should be able to get a credit back to your payment method, if you so choose. The only option being a store credit, makes me angry and makes me not want to continue to shop here in the future. Also, No Returns on jewelry. There should be black & white exceptions. Like I can't clasp my necklace! They should be more flexible in their return policy. read more

I had a gift card for Fighting Eel and really wanted to get a cute dress to wear! Unfortunately during this trip I wasn't able to find anything that really worked for my body. My personal stylist, aka my husband, was there with me and to no avail, we totally struck out. I know that you're laughing that my husband is my personal stylist, but he's got a great eye for prints, colors and fit! Plus, he's really the only person I need to be sexy for. Ha ha ha! Thankfully we started trying on Quay sunglasses and ended up getting two pairs for myself and a pair for my husband. The sales girl that helped us was attentive, friendly and super patient as I flipped back and forth between all the different looks. Another semi hidden boutique in Downtown, Honolulu. This one is the most priciest one I have seen and definitely one to splurge on. The quality of the clothing is really comfortable and not cheap feeling. They have cute accessories displayed in those clear jewelry cases you see at jewelry stores, and outfits are organized by theme/color. I think the brand and their products are very pretty, but I must say the customer service turned me off today. I placed an online order and picked up from the store (this is my first ever purchase) and the women at the register did not have a welcoming vibe. I almost felt like I was maybe bothering them with my pick up request? I don't expect conversation with store associates or anything but it just felt very awkward to be in there and just wanted to leave as soon as they gave my order. It's a good thing I do not work downtown, this store is dangerous. Absolutely dangerous. The store itself is specious and bright. However this store is pricey. When I first came here, my eyes got huge as I saw the price tags. $140 for a stretchy dress??? You've got to be kidding me. I browsed some more and walked out without buying anything. The next time I came, I saw a couple of tops on sale at a reasonable price so I bought them. They were pretty comfortable and fit well. And then it happened. I came and found a dress that fit well. And that was the start of my Fighting Eel relationship. I bought that $140 free but loved the fit. It's good quality and comfortable. The lengths of the short dresses are great and their shorts are comfortable. I've never tried any of their pants. And I do have a few tops. They do have sales and deals, so make sure to follow them on social media. Every season they have different prints in similar styles. The girls here are helpful and try to help you find a style that you like. At the end of the season, usually they always have the previous season leftovers on sale. Depending on your size, sometimes you find great deals. I will say that usually their Ava Sky collection is usually made too small for me, depending on the material. I'm not a skinny girl but I'm not full figured. Definitely try things on. They also have a reward card that they keep at whatever store you sign up at. When you shop at any of their stores they let the store know other your reward card. Once you hit a certain amount, you get a discount off your purchase. The best part I like is that they're a local company and make their clothing is locally made. Comfortable, good quality, fits well and lasts well. Absolutely ADORE Fighting Eel... but def think it's a bit overpriced. Dresses and tops are usually $100 + Then again, the material is sooo comfy and seem to be good quality. I have a few FE dresses and uber comfy black pants that I bought recently and I wear them ALL the time. I try not to go inside too often just cause I know I'll be tempted to buy something. Usually when I go inside, I walk out with something!! Not good.. especially if you are on a budget!! Wish FE was a little more affordable :/ But I will say though that although it seems a little ridic to spend like $100 on a top or dress... it's a good investment because not only are the clothes something you'll wear all the time but they also won't go out of fashion cause they are timeless. They have a lot of basics which you can dress up or down! It's funny how almost everything I try on somehow fits my body so well.. it's like made for my body (and I am in far from being stick thin!) But the clothes just some how compliment most body shapes. Every time I try something on I get sad because I love everything yet can't afford everything *sigh* I'm almost thinking of just not buying anything from any other store and just saving money to buy 1 item a month from FE haha. They also have a wide variety of jewelery that I'm always going googly eyed for. Cute clothes and things but the customer service is horrible. I wanted to see a onesie that was in plastic, I asked if I could open it to see the size. The lady who helped me was like no. Um okay I can't just slide it out and fold it back up? So I bought it and opened it right there to make sure the size would work, and figured I could return it on the spot. It was one of the plastic bags (talk about not eco-friendly) that is folded with sticky so very easy to open and clothes. Also there was just my friend and I shopping at that time and three sales people so it wasn't like they were slammed. You do get what you pay for in fashion but with these clothes, you can accessorize a lot to stretch your wardrobe dollar. I'm into accessories and bags and this one was a nice size tote that you can take anywhere and flaunt with style. All my mainland friends rave about it even though it's a simple logo. Weeeee :) The store is of descent size, with ample room for displays and racks, lots of room for buyers to look around and a cute little dressing room. The staff are attentive and go out of their way to assist. The pricing as mentioned earlier is on the higher end, so I treat myself once in awhile. I placed the order yesterday and it's being sent via 2nd Day Air, even though it was originally supposed to be complimentary UPS Ground -- I suppose because you can't deliver via ground to California. Ok well I had a really hard time finding FE, I drove down bethel St. Three times then I finally parked down the other street and walked to bethel street. When I finally found FE there was no sign so I guess that's why I couldn't find them. All that wondering around china town looking for FE was definitely worth it. As soon as I walked in I felt like I was back in LA on Melrose St. It feels very high end in here, and trust me those prices are pretty "high end" as well. But I must admit that I unfortunately didn't buy anything this time around, but the next special event I'm going to I'll definitely be coming here first to find an outfit. I really liked the quality of the fabric seemed like it wouldn't fray if I washed it a few times and it was super soft! This has got to be the largest boutique in hawaii, compared to those little "shoe box" boutiques FE is a "closet". Parking... wait what parking? Oh that's right did I mention there basically is no parking. It's basically every (wo)man for him(her)self. If there's anything I love, it's a good basic... cotton basic at that! From the outside, this place looks real trendy and let's face it, you see all cotton stuff, you think "cheap." Not this place... it's pretty pricey! Pretty pricey, but it's thick cotton material, really clean lines and can be used for years! They had a sale going, anything green, white or black was on sale. After seeing the prices I didn't think it was the store for me. I eventually found a black 3/4 sleeved romper that criss-crossed in the front, I thought it was really cute but more than what I would pay for. Then thoughts of wearing it with tights and flats on them cold SF days or with sandals on those nice, sunny yet still cold SF days... and I knew it would be worth the money! They also had it with a striped bottom, or in two colors like a black top with white band and white shorts- sooo cute! If you're in the market for a cute cotton tube dress with a sweetheart neckline, or a banded cotton skirt that goes with every tank you have, or looking for plenty of figure flattering empire waisted tops and dresses... come here! read more

This review is mainly for the product. Not sure if staff did all they could, but if they did, thank you. I purchased a dress that was on sale, that I loved! I bought it...I loved the way it fit me and just had to have it for an event I had that weekend. After I bought it, I showed it to my coworker and we both discovered a hole and snag on the side pocket. So, after work I went back to the store and informed them that the dress was coming apart and showed them where exactly. I will give them credit, they tried looking for the same dress in the store and there was not one in sight. They located the same dress in Kailua and at Kahala Mall, but I had to catch a plane and was crunched on time to pick it up. They did also offer to exchange it for another dress, but the selection there is small and they didn't have anything that would fit the occasion. The salesperson also offered to sew the dress herself, but she couldn't find a needle to help me out. So knowing that I had very little time to spare, I ran to Kahala mall and asked if I could exchange it for the same exact dress. The person there pulled it out for me and we both then discovered that this dress also had a hole in it on the side pocket. With time running out, I had to choose the dress with the less visible hole that I was capable of fixing myself. The dresses/merchandise really shouldn't be out on the floor or should be reviewed before they are put on the floor regardless if they are on sale or not. This shows really bad attention to detail and gives the brand a bad name. For the price one pays for the merchandise, I believe the merchandise should be up to par. Whether or not anything changes, I do like to go in there to take a look. I would just recommend maybe fine tuning some things or even offering a discount like other stores do for faulty items. read more

I've heard so many great things about Fighting Eel and of course I had to visit. First of all, parking was horrid! The shop is bright and cheerful, however as I walked in, no one greeted me :0(. There were but maybe 6 customers in the shop and two girls working that day, not one of the girls offered any assistance or asked me if I was doing alright. Clothing wise, they're clothing selection was a bit "limited" and many shapeless clothing. Sadly, I had high hopes from Fighting Eel and it's customer service but neither of which was granted. Too bad, I wanted to so much like Fighting Eel but I will NOT be returning anytime soon. Needless to say, what a waste of time since I only came there to shop at Fighting Eel! read more

Yelp 31 days Challenge: 8 of 31 I really love the clothes at Fighting Eel, however, their service is not where it used to be. The last 3 times I visited the store, I was not greeted for the duration of my visit. There were 2 salesclerks just chatting with one another, or chatting on the phone. On my most recent visit, one was on the phone, and the other was standing at the counter picking at her nails. I was the only person in the store and actually passed the counter on 2 occasions. Nothing. Nada. Not a peep. I would probably visit more frequently if the customer service was up to the par of its stylish designs. read more

The fabric they use at Fighting Eel is absolutely fabulous. Items Ive bought from them look the same as the day I bought them even after all the washes. No fading what so ever and the fit is still perfect. The clothes are not only really comfortable but always so cute. Prices are higher here but believe me the quality here makes it a bargain. I hate the fact that they always have so many cute items. I just recently bought two pair of leggings and I almost cried they fit so well and were so comfy, its so hard to find good leggings. They always have petite sizes for me and their clothes are figure friendly. I'm on a budget, so I need to restrict how I spend my money. In other words Im spending less in other areas to keep my funding for Fighting Eel. Financial responsibility lol. read more

So, my sis told me about this place (check out the first review) and on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays they are open and sell some of their older dresses for cheaper! I had the opportunity to go recently and the dresses are super, super cute! The girls that were there were very nice and helpful. I tried over a dozen dresses, and the sales girl was really nice to help me find sizes and different colors. I walked away with 2 dresses and a top from their sale bins. I absolutely love the dresses I bought. The fit is great! All their styles are very simple, but still have a special something to them that makes them not so simple. Some of the dresses they have right now are even hand drawn patterns. There is one with a Phoenix on it that was drawn, and one with a pineapple print that was drawn by someone on the Island as well. There was one dress I absolutely loved, but I couldn't get myself to buy it since I'm on a super duper tight budget, but in any case, LOVE YA FIGHTING EEL! read more

Love Fighting Eel. Don't always love the prices though. Most of the clothing from their signature and Ava Sky lines run anywhere from $44-150ish. Most of their nicest pieces are well over $100. Even when things go on sale, they're still expensive. Just less expensive. I do feel the prices are justified, because you're getting things that not everyone will have (as compared to something you got from Forever 21). You can also feel the quality of the fabric and workmanship in their items. They always seem to do discounts and promotions, so if you see something you like you can take your chances and see if it goes on sale eventually. I really like their rewards card program, and that they keep your rewards card on file so you don't lose it. Once you fill up your stamps, you get 15% off the next purchase. If you do a phone or online order, make sure you ask the store to stamp your card. :). Every point counts. If you can, make it out to their sample sales. Sometimes everything is $30! Erica is very helpful. :). Also, I just found out today they do hemming through their seamstress if it's an Ava Sky or Fighting Eel piece for $10 for all you shorties. I really need to learn how to sew myself, but it's a great option if you don't want to have to go somewhere else to hem your long pants and maxi dresses. read more

1.4.13 A Fighting Eel piece has been on my wish list foreverrrr. I had meant to go to their (up to) 75% off sale last week but didn't get a chance to make it down from the office--so close yet so far! Sadly, my closet will not be so lucky unless they have another fab sale soon! So while I am not an FE convert quite yet, I can still Yelp about my in-store, "window shopping" experience. I have been to the Kailua store a couple of times and thought the staff (and of course the clothes!) were great; super friendly and I love how bright the store appears. Unfortunately at the time I was not ready or able to fork out the moolah for any of their amazing pieces, but there's no denying the quality and styles of their items. I also always see lots of advertisements that support local designers, entrepreneurs, crafts(wo)men, etc which I think is awesome seeing as this boutique is also home grown! Today was my first time going into the downtown store and I was excited because I was hoping that I could finally invest in an FE! When I walked in, I arrived with a group of customers. It looked like they were tourists that were exploring downtown. Sadly, I was not greeted cheerfully as in the Kailua location and I was not offered help until I was just about to leave the store; it looked like employees were busy racking new things needed to be put on display and the weather was pretty gloom and doom in the city. The fact that I missed out on what I wanted to buy from the sale (which I accept is completely my fault) just dampened my experience today. On a brighter note, I am still optimistic that maybe today was just one of those days: rainy, busy day, etc. and that FE is still a great place to shop. I've seen and heard how amazing their clothes fit and feel and I have to admit even though the customer service may have not been up to par in this one visit, I still want to get my hands on an FE item?! There's currently a sample sale going on that started yesterday and goes till 5 pm today--you still have time ladies! Since I am a believer of second chances (and a sucker for anything to deal with the word "SALE") I decided to check it out. I guess they hold their samples sales in their main offices on 9 North Pauahi Street. It's really easy to overlook. I actually went to the actual FE store to ask for directions because I couldn't find it! Just look for a giant "9" on glass window of a greenish colored door; there is a keypad on the wall bc you have to buzz in for them to let you in the building, Suite #200. So in this little adventure of mine, I had to obvi stop at the normal FE store to ask for directions. I wasn't really greeted (again) when I walked in...but when I sought out help from the girl that was working she was super nice and really helpful.Thus, my feelings towards FE in this experience were already much more positive. Their studio/office was pretty neat. This was my first time to a "sample sale". I think most of the items were gone since the sale actually started yesterday but I was just happy to be there and I was on the hunt for a FE piece that I could proudly add to my closet. There were a bunch of boxes on the floor organized by size (XS, S, M, L) and some boxes were sorted by price ($10, $30, $50). Digging through them was kind of tiring--I would suggest not wearing heels--but luckily I could take my time since there wasn't anyone there aside from myself at the time. If you ask they'll let you try on items in one of their work rooms; I'm glad I did bc 1) I found out that I could fit a L size and 2) it was neat to see all the fabrics and stuff (or whatever is in the room you go in...and yes I'm crafty and into stuff like that). I have to say that I'm glad I gave FE another chance because the staff proved me wrong today; they were friendly, helpful and seeing the quality of the product and where it's made first hand made my original review revision-worthy. Fighting Eel at a discount, what's not to love? The girls are also so sweet & helpful. Dresses fit different body types. My sister & I are opposites, she is skinny with a broader shoulder & straight shape. I'm rounded shouldered, curvy & could stand lose 20 lbs. We both have found stuff that is flattering here. If you're looking for something chic classic and on trend all at the same time AND have money to spend Fighting Eelnisnthe boutique for you. Locally designed FE clothes are versatile and can go day to night baby luau to night on the town. Not only will you be able to find unique clothes here that not everyone will be wearing but you'll be ale to snag one of a kind accessories as well. Parking isn't the best and they're only open Monday to Saturday but another boutique just opened in Kailua that's open seven days a week.
