My daughter and I had lunch nearby. She smelled more food and followed her nose. Next thing you know, we were in front of this store. The food wasn't coming from here, but my daughter just had to see what was inside. So we came in to just look. Sugarcane is this cute shop where you can find all these locally made items for a gift, for the home, fir kids, for a friend, or for visitors. They have books, puzzles, toys jewelry, totes, bags, coasters and more. I love the wooden toys for the kids. I bought a wooden cell phone, a camera, stickers and a cute cooking set. They are my kiddos favorite toys. I've gotten key chains and jewelry for gifts. We have coasters for our home too. The workers are pretty friendly and they also wrapped my gift item too. The items seem pricey, but they are locally made and are unique. I don't think you'll find any ship with the same kind of item that Sugarcane carries. Overall, this is a great place to get gifts and maybe something for yourself. Beware of bringing your children. They will make you buy everything. read more

This is the cutest little shop in Waialae with all the local goodies- perfect for holiday shopping! The pieces here are very unique and has products/ art from a ton of different local artists and artisans. Everything here is really local-fyed and trendy. I love taking mainland visitors here so they can have a unique Hawaii keepsake or so they can go shopping for friends and family back home. The past few times I came here, I got a gift for my mom and for someone who I was going to their house for the first time. Both of those times I bought Aloha Aina aromatherapy candles and soaps. When I've come here browsing for myself, I've gotten\ zodiac themed jewelry, a cute cellphone charm, and a hair clip. The space might be small but the selection is vast and curated- you never know what goodies you'll find! read more

9-25-21 Third stop during my When On Waialae exploration. As I entered the shop, co-owner Kennedy asked me something like what have you been up to today? That caught me by surprise in a nice way, acknowledging my presence. My answer, I'm visiting some shops on the WOW event. She asked where have I been so far... Cool, we were the only ones in the shop so we had time to chit chat before I took a stroll around this shop filled with carefully selected items for sale. Struck a genuine interest in the one time fanatic craft fair goer in me. So many lovely items...I settled on about 7+ tiny items for a special someone whose birthday is next week. As I was being rung up a necklace caught my eye. Thank goodness for the 20% discount off one item- ooh yay, happy me! Hopefully I might wear it in La Jolla soon. Kennedy wrapped the items in tissue for me after using correction tape to white out the prices and placed them in a cute white tote bag. So glad I told hubs( who was waiting in his AC car) that I wanted to venture out and check out a few highlighted shops. What a super cute little shop! Loved that this place has so many hand crafted items from local artist. When I walked in I felt welcome by the brightness of the light that filled the little shop also by the friendly cashier that greeted me upon entering. I had just finished dining at Earl's awesome sandwich shop and decided to take a peek inside Sugarcane, a local shop with all kinds of unique hand made items from necklaces to tea towels. This small but decorative shop, has a nice local vibe and a variety of hand made in Hawaii items that are sure to please that special someone in your life. I decided on purchasing an all natural bamboo dining set; consisting of a knife, fork, spoon, chopsticks and a straw inside a handy canvas material with snap carrying case. I also choose a bright pink lettered Aloha coin purse as a gift for my Lady. A bit on the pricey side but worth it for these unique gifts that have that Islsnd feel. I love this store! It's filled with wonderful vintage and eclectic things. There were at least 20 things in this store that I wanted to buy. I'd say that sugarcane is a great place to find original pieces to decorate your home or purchase cool gifts. I walked out of the store kinda disappointed that I was empty handed BUT! when I checked in on Yelp, I discovered the 20% off one item check-in offer. SCORE! I walked back in and bought gorgeous earrings made by a local designer. But what made my purchase even more glorious is that today they had a sale for 25% off all locally made jewelry. This store is very hidden and very underrated! I love visiting this store to see what's new and what I can buy for myself and my friends! This store carries lots of local island-made favorites (soaps, tea towels, candles, keychains, jewelry) as well as island-inspired gifts for adults and kids. They have baby accessories and books too! I love how they have a few vintage glassware pieces mixed in to the well-organized and staged shelves. Parking is inside a paid lot, at a very low rate. Its a great place to get Hawaiian gifts that are not the made-in-china junk variety. They have some really nice scrubs and i love the Hawaiian style kid books. I LOVE this store! They have so many Made in Hawaii trinkets & gifts at such an affordable price. I went down today to Christmas shop since everything is 15% off for supporting small businesses. Got some lavender aromatherapy pillows, Turkish beach blankets (got a Turkish bag for free for buying 2 blankets), some jewelry bowls, stickers. You can find something in there from baby gifts, local soaps & scents, grocery bags, purses, jewelry, house decor.. you just have to go if you've never been before! Located in Kaimuki, Sugarcane is nestled in the oddest little shopping center. It's next door to Earl sandwich shop, Himalayan Kitchen and a bunch of other shoe box sized businesses. I meandered into this den of curiosities as I waited for my sammie next door and I'm so glad I took the time to explore. The store is stuffed to the brim with hand picked specialty gifts with a bohemian sea theme threading its way through the store. Gorgeous coral and seashell printed pillows, custom made hand towels, delicate jewelry, surfing and foodie table books, adorable glass mushrooms for your garden, vintage glassware and more cuteness than you could possibly stuff into a single review! It made me wish I had a special friend to buy something for because everything just felt like it was sprinkled with magical unicorn dust! Sugarcane proves that mermaids have impeccable taste and are very talented merchandisers. I didn't buy anything today because I had to rush off to my lunch but I'm certainly going to return to buy a gift in the near future. The owner was spending a Sunday with her family so we chatted with a friend of hers who was really nice and helpful !! My daughter was trying to grab at everything so I will need to go again with a helper. I did see some cute gift ideas for people on my list. They have a fabulous selection of vintage Pyrex, and milk glass! I just can't get enough! It's so dangerous...I can never leave here with just one piece. I always end up getting several. Sugarcane also has the best selection of "Get Salty" hats. But being so popular, my favorite turquoise colored ones sell out rather quickly, but rest assured you can place one on hold for your convenience! Follow them on IG so you know when they replenish their stock! I have to confess that shopping here is a VERY guilty pleasure of mine. BUT the guilt quickly fades away when I remind myself that I'm supporting a locally owned small business, and needless to say that Jill, the owner is the sweetest! Stop into this amazing little shop located in the Kaimuki municipal parking lot next to the Jamaican restaurant, and near the Happy Day Chinese restaurant. Love this shop! So many awesome finds by local artists that aren't the same thing a you find in every other tourist shop.

This is the most adorable Hawaiian gift and souvenir shop ever! I had been following the shop on Instagram for about a year before finally traveling to visit in person. Every piece of jewelry, every scarf, every little cosmetic pouch, and each home accessory is carefully selected to curate the perfect collection of items to bring back home to loved ones. It can be hard to find tasteful yet affordable Hawaiian souvenirs in Waikiki beyond mugs and magnets from the ABC store. Sugarcane shop has the best little key chains made from sea shells and colorful tassels. They also had beautiful shell and bead jewelry. It was so much fun selecting small gifts for my girlfriends that commemorated my vacation yet are useful and wearable by stylish, urban women. This little gem is off the beaten path and tricky to find (entrance in the parking lot, not on the street), but well worth the trek! read more

I just LOVE Sugarcane! It saddens me to see that this place doesn't have better ratings, because we need more shops like Sugarcane here on Oahu! I love supporting locally owned boutiques, where you can get to know the owners and actually KNOW who you are supporting when shopping there. Every time I've shopped here, the owner has been nothing but nice and she obviously has great taste because everything in the store is just perfection. Sugarcane is whimsical, vintage, shabby chic counterpart to my other favorite local boutique, Quince. A girl has got to have options right? Sometimes I feel very "old soul" and other times I feel like the modern woman that I am (or at least think I am in my head). So when I am feeling my "old soul" self, and am craving a good vintage find, I come to Sugarcane. I sometimes feel like my "island-beachy" self, in which case I find myself once again in Sugarcane. I am in LOVE with their pillow covers. It's very "Kaypee Soh" but for a much more affordable price. And whenever I need a great baby gift, this is the place to come! Lots of super cute locally made baby items here! Parking is in a paid lot, but there must be a grace period because I never end up paying for parking when I visit Sugarcane. Maybe 15 minutes? 30 minutes? Not sure, but even if you stay past the grace period, parking is so cheap. In fact, go and grab lunch from Cafe Laufer while you're at it, or get an ice cream cone from Pillbox. I love Sugarcane and it's definitely 5 star worthy in my books! read more

The only thing saving Sugarcane from getting a one star review from me is that they carry a really adorable assortment of handmade baby items ranging from hair clips to onesies to burp cloths. I'm a sucker for cute baby stuff. That being said, the customer service here is extremely disappointing. As I walked in, the woman working at the register glanced up at me, stone-faced, then promptly returned to what she was doing. The store was empty. She was not on a phone call. Yet, she couldn't even be bothered to mutter a simple "hello" or even muster a fake smile. I mean, really? I worked in retail for a number of years & even on my worst days (e.g. hungover, irritated with coworkers, ravenously hungry) I could still fake it. I mean, what the hell are you getting paid for? Hey lady, here's an idea. How about you spend more time making your customers feel more welcome; perhaps then your store wouldn't be so empty. I'm never coming back here again. No matter how cute that felt-designed Yoda onesie was. I'd rather go somewhere that makes me feel appreciated as a customer...not like I'm a pain in the ass. read more

Customer service leaves much to be desired. I went to their blog and noticed a beautiful shimmery mermaid jewelery box that really caught my eye. It was posted on a July 2010 entry. I called them up asking if they had said mermaid jewelery box. The haole wahine who answered the phone got all flustered when I asked if it was still in the store. Her: "Well, that blog is rarely updated, you know. Best thing is to come in and see for yourself." Me: "Ummm, yes, I realize that. But, this was from last month's blog entry. Do you still see the box in your store?" I figure: - Hey, it's a small store no bigger than my large bedroom. - The object is very distinct, shiny & you can't miss it. - Put 2+2 together & if you don't see the glittery box, just tell me so! Lady: "Like I said, the best thing is for you to come down ..." I did go down the next day since I live close to downtown. This request from her wouldn't be so feasible if I was coming in from Wai'anae or the North Shore. How hard is it to look for one item I was interested in? The item wasn't there - blah! Semi-OK collection of vintage/consignment clothing, some really cute reusable tote bags that had honus on top for $35 (wouldn't mind going back to pick up one of those), an eclectic mix of antique items you could probably find at some garage sales, Craigslist or Goodwill (if you're too lazy to do that, though, then come here since she does have good taste) & some employee was purchasing these glass containers from a lady that were cute. Just small to medium-sized glass containers that had a shell design on it made out of beach sand --- i.e., you take a stencil of a shell, place glue over stencil & pour beach sand over it. The containers were going for $15 - $20 on up. Eek, me thinks not. Love the eco-conscious/earth-friendly/etc. kinda theme going with the shop, but work on your customer service first!! Owner or store employee failed to greet me, provide any kind of eye contact, or even offer help when I walked in and was browsing for 15 minutes; she was more interested in securing items from beach sand glass creation lady. Based on previous reviews, I'm gonna make an effort to come back here again since they had positive experiences ... I'm *hoping* that I caught them on an "off" day. read more

This place is a little hit or miss. I like their consignment items. 7 for All Mankind consigned jeans were going for a real decent price. They've got other designer names that are lightly used and going for an awesome price. But.....I did come across some Forever 21 items that were gently used and going for almost the full price. I saw a consigned Forever 21 skirt going for $28! That was a little shocking as we all know Forever 21 is far from designer. It does hurt the wallet to know that you can get the brand new version for a couple dollars more..or even less. There are some great finds here, but you need to have an eye for brands. Pay attention to the labels and the price tags. You don't want to be stuck with a $28 consigned Forever 21 skirt when you can get a consigned 7 for All Mankind pair of jeans for $35 on sale. read more

We went to sugar cane for the 3rd Friday Kaimuki art festival. The flyer advertised free champaign to those shopping. There was only one worker and she was extremely rude me and my group of friends completely ignoring us. She was on her phone the whole time! Although the store has really nice things it was off putting to be ignored the whole time. I have been there before and usually the workers are more attentive and welcoming. There is a large parking lot which is nice, all the products are handmade In Hawaii so it's great that the store supports local artists. read more

So I decided to visit this store again with hopes of finding some awesome things and perhaps better customer service. Cool stuff- check! Customer service- fail! The sales associate did give me a halfhearted hello when I entered, but pretty much did not interact with me at all. Even after asking questions about their sale, she pretty much gave me one word answers with no eye contact whatsoever. As I was on my way out, the sales associate was cleaning some things near the front door. I though perhaps she would say bye or something as I left, but she didn't even move on the side so I could exit! I had to excuse myself and squeeze by her! I think I'm done with this store. Happy Shopping, This little place is a gem, tucked into a place that is out of the way, the most amazing little things lay, or lie? I don't know, English is a second language for me. You would think that it would be hard to shop for a woman in her 50's that has just about everything, but when this is a visitor from the mainland and from a landlocked city the most fun gift ideas are to be had at Sugarcane. Not only did I find a bunch of little gifts, from soap dishes with aloha flavor to beach bags and throw pillows, the ease in which all this came together in allowed me to spoil myself at the sandwich shop across the hall. The young woman working the counter, was helpful and funny, and after my check in on Yelp, gave me 15% off the most expensive item I selected, if this isn't A+ service you won't find better on this island. Really cute little store in the same area as Bella Mia and Himilayan Kitchen. I LOVE consignments, so this was a great find for me!!! I walked out there with an Oneill skirt ($13) and a Billabong dress ($14), perfect for my work at UH (casual dress). This is a tiny store, but cute stuff! Not an extensive clothes section (again, really tiny store), but you can also find houseware and jewelry and purses here. I don't make it out to Kaimuki very often, but when I'm in the area, I try to stop in (and they get new stuff almost daily!). Parking is on Waialae or in the paid lot. :) read more
