I stopped by NOHEA Gallery at the mall today with a friend, just planning to browse for a bit, and we ended up having one of the most memorable art experiences I've had in a long time. We had the pleasure of meeting (JORDAN), one of the artists who works at the gallery. He was incredibly kind and generous with his time, walking us through the store and sharing the stories behind some of the pieces. When we asked to see his own artwork, we were blown away. Jordan has an incredible talent for capturing the beauty of the east side of the island-the lush greens, deep blues, and the feeling you get when you're out on a hike surrounded by nature. As someone who spends a lot of time exploring those places, his work really spoke to me. You can feel the connection to the land in every piece. What impressed me even more is how young he is. His level of skill and vision is remarkable, and it's exciting to think about where his artistic journey will take him in the future. We were lucky enough to purchase a few of his pieces for an amazing price and I truly feel grateful to have them in my home. I am sometimes reluctant to go into galleries, because the sales associates can be uppity, or look at you disapprovingly if you do not buy anything. My best friend and I went into Nohea yesterday, chatting amiably as we browsed the store. We were just there to look. As we left the store the sales associate gave a warm smile and waved to us. That really resonated with me. I went back in alone an hour later. My friend pointed out something she liked and I wanted to get it for her birthday. It really was a bit out of my budget, but the kindness of the sales associate, Nadia, and the delightful ambience of the store made me want to spend the money. Nadia excitedly showed me art by several artists with no pressure to buy, just to show me new merchandise they had recently brought in. It was auch a warm experience. We like to get Jeff Chang dishes and things as housewarming gifts. I think Nohea is the only place that carries his work now that his store at Windward Mall closed. There are different pieces at different price points to choose from. I'm not familiar with Kapolei. The friendly staff gave me good directions and was very helpful. Nohea Gallery is known for featuring various art forms from local artists and artisans. Today, I was met by sales associate, Leilani, who has a bright smile and exuded welcoming Aloha. During my visit, I had the opportunity to talk with and watch local wood turning artist, Willie Ridep. He was working on a piece of silk oak and turned it into a beautiful raw bracelet. Unfortunately, he couldn't do any sanding or smoothing because the demonstration was indoors. However, I can only imagine how beautiful that bracelet will be in its finished form and I hope to see more of his custom made pieces in the store soon. When Nohea Gallery's original location in Ward Warehouse was recently demolished, the owners opened at the Hyatt Regency Waikīkī but also searched for a second location. I think this location in Kāhala Mall is probably the best for both local residents and visitors. There's a lot of free parking in the mall's multiple parking structures and there are others stores and restaurants where you can shop or dine in this enclosed shopping mall. Whether you're looking for a special piece of locally designed jewelry or art work that will enhance your island-style home décor or a whimsical piece, I think you'll find it here. I've walked by Nohea Gallery many times but never actually walked in before. A friend had told me that they also have koa bowls which I love to collect when they're not too expensive. From the outside I always thought they just had paintings. I was surprised that they've got a beautiful koa collection, but out of my price range. The paintings weren't my style, but they have some beautiful pieces. I will come back when I get a raise and can afford it lol. read more

Nohea Gallery is one of those high-end retail shops with tons of locally-made products that you often pass while browsing the mall, but this weekend I stepped in and I recommend you do the same! I was amazed at the variety of products available: prints, jewelry, wooden goods, pottery, and more are available! All locally-made and with vendor information at hands reach this is a great shop to go to for gifts or omiyage. My partner and I went here to get jewelry; we were seeking out Koa wood rings, which Nohea Gallery does carry. These rings are VERY hard to find. The sales associate who helped us, Noelani, got us two Koa wood rings in our sizes (which is based on availability) with similar appearances. Note that due to the grain of the wood and its natural coloring no two Koa wood rings are the same. We got one platnium and one titanium (which are hard to tell apart at first glance) and are very happy with how they look together and apart. Noelani seemed sort of confused and worked at a slower pace. She had a hard time finding rings in the appropriate sizes as the rings are not displayed in an organized fashion (AKA sizes and styles all mixed together). When we inquired about other ring designs made by the same artisan as our Koa wood rings (artisan name is Ulana o Kukui, only sold at Nohea Gallery) she was flipping through a huge book of work and you could tell she was a little flustered. We left our information at the counter as she said she would talk to the artisan and then call us back with more info. - Its been almost a week and we're still optimistically waiting as Ulana o Kukui's work is stunning. It is unfortunate that we didnt get jewelry boxes for our rings, just mesh bags... Nohea Gallery prices are up there but this is because the store takes a bit on top of vendor prices, so support local if you can afford it. Our rings altogether cost more than 300.00. No discounts offered, no kama'aina, military, or senior. No additional charge for using your card. Shop and support if you're able to or just look around and tell your friends. Supporting the community is a must and Nohea Gallery is one way to do it! read more

March 13, 2015 on a Friday I entered Nohea Gallery for the first time at the Ward Warehouse. I noticed all the beautiful koa carvings whether it be bowls, jewel cases, earrings, or bookmarks. I was so tempted to buy a koa bookmark on this day which I'll buy it on my next trip to Honolulu. You might be wondering "Why would you need a bookmark?" My answer is "I still have 30 books to read and I would need it in case I ever loose a place when I'm reading a book. Yes I do have to turn the page...I don't have a digital version of the book." I also noticed the beautiful paintings, photos, and glass merchandises. I was browsing through the individually wrapped photographs and noticed all the different sceneries. Photos of the beaches, photos of Diamond Head, or photos of Waikiki. On the back of each photograph is information of the photographer who took the shots. I seen some other items that I liked which I would have to save money in order to purchase. Someday in the future I'll be back...hopefully the merchandise that I like is still available. read more

FIVE STARS for Nohea Gallery! It was a Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. and I thought I'd give Nohea Gallery a call to see if they had a Men's pendant from the Sonny Ching line of jewelry. I initially spoke to Karen on the phone to see if the store had what I was looking for it in stock. I eventually decided to go into the store myself to see what they had available. When I walked into the store, Karen greeted me by name and was very friendly. She didn't have what I was looking for, but he showed me several options of what was available. Not only did she open the display case for me to see, but she also pulled out several items (15+) from the back stock, so that I could see all options that were in the Sonny Ching line of jewelry. I was very determined to get what I was looking for, so I decided to wait on the other purchases. Nohea Gallery has top quality and fine items from local artisans on the island. They carry things from paintings, jewelry, drink coasters, wood bowls, Koa itesm such as pens / boxes / jewelry, and they also have very nice pieces of home decoration items. Go check out the Sonny Ching collection of jewelry. All of the pieces are tribal print items that are based on the Kapa prints. Each pattern tells a story about a life experience or a legend. For the men's line, he has silver pendants, cufflinks, leather & silver bracelets, etc. For the women, he has pendants, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, etc. Super nice. On our trip this year to Hawaii we decided that we really wanted to buy some art from local Hawaiian artists. After researching galleries before we left, we made our first stop at Nohena in the Ward Warehouse. It was the first place and last we needed to go. First, they have beautiful things!! From paintings to wood to jewelry and glass. More important though was the level of service we received. Suze helped us and she was fantastic!! We do not know anything about art except we know what we like. She was very patient with us, explained the different mediums, listened to what we wanted and respected our budget. One of the special pieces we bought turned out to be done by her daughter but she did not tell us that until we had picked it out. It made it even more special. We also picked out quite a few prints. With one, they had to contact the artist to see if it could be made in the size we wanted. That was done quickly and we are getting it. After we got home Suze called us to update us on the order. Finally, Jay the manager has kept in contact with us to let us know when the shipping box was complete and when it shipped to us. I cannot wait to have these beautiful pieces hanging in our home to always remind of us of our favorite place! My first experience with Nohea Gallery was a few years ago, while living on the island. Very courteous customer service and I at the time bought some small Koa reindeer. I recently contacted the gallery again because I would like to purchase some more of the reindeer. They not only responded to my email right away, they are searching around trying to find a few more of the reindeer for me, since the man who makes them is retiring. I have always enjoyed this store when I lived on island. On a recent visit to O'ahu I stopped by. I found the gift I was looking for for a good price ( compared to other shops in Waikiki haleiwa and kailua). I asked for some assistance in searching for a petroglyphs wall hanging that I was looking for. I had been collecting his artwork for several years. Despite the others in store by another artist they assisted me in finding this particular artist and the specific petroglyph I was looking for. That same day they had found what I was looking for. The next day Yvonne? Called me to say that the artwork had been delivered... I have to say that they have some exemplary Customer service!!! Some Waikiki shopkeepers take note... In general, there are pictures, general home décor and knick-knacks, and jewelry, along with a few toys. Most things are on the pricy side, but they really are unique. I LOVE Nohea Gallery! I have been shopping at Nohea since it opened! I am not sure what Kaiulani is talking about... no one has EVER followed me around in Nohea. Just a friendly greeting, and then help when I needed it. The things in Nohea Gallery are gorgeous and almost all Hawaii made! I started out buying for myself and our home and offices there, and then started buying gifts. These days with time so tight, I can just pull up to a parking space near the store, run in and find a hostess gift, holiday gift, birthday gift, graduation gift, whatever, and be out again in nothing flat. It is easy to also assemble composite gifts there, all in one place. Incredible serving pieces that can serve as platters, trays, and even plates, given alone or paired with other cool pieces and you have an unique gift that will be treasured forever! Through the years, I have found that Nohea's prices are very reasonable, and hard to beat. Sometimes, there are pieces in Nohea Gallery that go for many many times more elsewhere. Plus, I like supporting our local artists and supporting a store that is supporting our Hawaii and our people. When my mother and I were creating floral sculptures for exhibitions, we found really beautiful vases at Nohea, which were the envy of the other exhibitors. I still use those vases when special clients are coming over from the Mainland or overseas, or for other special occasions, but since they are pretty precious to me, they are not put out on semi-permanent display. Some of the pieces are Raku. Raku is low-fired type of ceramic using plant debris, like Mango leaves, and such to fire the piece and achieve incredible results. But, Raku cannot be knocked around. Some of my Nohea Gallery pieces I use on a semi-permanent basis for creating the "Look" and "Feel" of our home and business offices--I say semi-permanent because I find it is easy to refresh a Look and Feel, with even one or two pieces from Nohea, so enjoy giving the entrances or my spaces a fresh look. I enjoy making seasonal changes, too. Right now, it is gift-giving time, so I am heading into Nohea again. They were just starting to unpack some incredible pieces as I was rushing off. read more

Among my favorite stores in Honolulu, this place and Na Mea. I love Nohea's selection of art and jewelry. I can always find a gift from Hawaii there or a treat for myself. The original Ward store was everything and now I think they are trying to find new ground with the Kahala store. I took a biki down to the one in Waikiki and it was nice but small and hard to get to as a local. I hope Nohea stays open forever! read more

there are some beautiful things in here. i like that so many local artists are featured, i like that the things picked are for eclectic tastes, and the store itself is beautiful. while the people who work here are very lovely and knowledgeable, it is hard to look around when you have someone following you telling you each detail about something you're looking at. sometimes you just want to look. oh and before you buy: you can't return for money. only store credit. and there is a very strict time frame on that as well. read more

This is a really nice shop with high quality Hawaiian products. It shouldn't be missed. Everything in here is beautiful and worthy to take home or buy as gifts. Although I wouldn't get gifts myself since these products were also extremely high in price. I like my friends, but not that much. The most annoying thing was the woman that worked there stalked you, interrupted you all the time and told this story on how this dufus caught a shoplifter and became her hero. I heard the story at least 29 other times each time a new customer came in that she could stalk. I would have bought something, but she drove me out of there. I wanted to buy something to remember my vacation to Hawaii, and found this art gallery. First off - they can and will ship items for very reasonable prices. I found items I really wanted that I hadn't been able to find on the main strip in Waikiki. It felt less "touristy" and more like a gallery that happens to be near a tourist destination. It was relaxing to flip thru all the images and be away from the activity of Waikiki for an hour or so (and there is a coffee shop and bakery really close by if your vacation companions aren't into art they could check out some other great shops in the shopping center). I was tempted by beautiful Koa wood earrings (made locally, not made in China like some of the other earrings I had seen elsewhere), signed prints in multiple sizes, and original artwork in several mediums (watercolor, pastels, oils, glass, and ceramics). I bought a print of a watercolor (inexpensive and easy to decide on), a pair of earrings (reasonably priced and easy to pack, right?), and an original piece that they shipped home for me. Some of their works are framed (they can have a shipping box built to protect the frame and glass) but a lot of them are just matted, which makes them lighter and easier to ship. They contacted me to confirm my shipping preference (carrier and speed) with quotes, and it was more reasonable than I expected. I almost feel like they should have a sign saying, "example shipping cost for X size item to east coast USA is $24-$65, depending on speed". Last thing - their art selections range from traditional Hawaii subjects and scenes to more abstract ones. Neither piece I bought screams "coconut bra and grass skirt" but both remind me of the colors in Hawaii. read more

Once again this place went above and beyond for a customer. My friend bought a cheap photo under $15... which they gift wrapped nicely. Then she found a frame sat another store, took both back to Nohea. The salespeople helped her put the photo into the frame and OFFERED TO REDO THE GIFT WRAPPING !! All with smiles. I love this place! I always bump into friends here too. Lots of my artist friends sell work thru this shop. I can count on them to have something nice for special gifts (and for me!). The prices are good, better than elsewhere . We get compliments all the time on our wedding rings we got here like 15 years ago. I always found the staff to be really nice but unlike Kaiulani, I've never had anybody follow me around. They were just helpful and kind. Also I had to return something the next day once and again unlike Kaiulani, there was no problem, they were easy to work with. I took my family to the Sheraton Waikiki location for a lei making class and we all had a blast. I give Nohea Gallery five stars. read more

Nohea Gallery is a hidden gem at Ward. They have the most unique island artwork. I love just poking around on my lunch break. I have also found some wonderful gifts for not too expensive. The workers were really friendly and full of information but I didn't find them smothering at all.
