Recently visited The Art Board store at 1255 South Beretania St. It's a hidden gem located directly across the Safeway store, right before Taco Bell. Roddy, the store employee, greeted me at the door. She was very personable and extremely helpful in answering all of my questions. Wanted to get a picture framed. She presented different price quotes to me. Had a picture frame that I earlier had purchased from Walgreens. After showing it to her, she inserted the picture into the frame and also installed the wire behind the frame so that I could hang it up on my wall. When I offered some money for her troubles, she said it wasn't necessary. No charges were applied. She made my day with her thoughtfulness and extreme kindness. I had hoped to purchase a mat board to assist with changing out a mat. Roddy was very kind and wanted to help me. She said she would speak to her boss (Mr. Eguchi?) and would return my call. Apparently he has no interest in helping an 82-year-old living alone on a fixed income. Not profitable enough if I only want a new mat, unless I pay hundreds of dollars for the privilege. We had a great experience with this framer. Everything was done with close consideration and with high quality materials. They gave multiple matte recommendations and did a great job with high quality ensuring our family's artwork is framed cleanly and behind UV protective plexiglass. I had no issues with this place. I had a 30x40 inch unstretched Peter Max oil painting. I opted for a pretty basic black frame with nice red shinny cloth matting. It came out to about $850 for everything. This was in about 2017. I thought it was a little high but who know. It might just be the going rate. The girl who took the order was very good. This review is long overdo! I needed two special oil paintings on canvas that was framed in gorgeous koa veneer to be re matted. Both were gifts given to us by a dear friend years ago and had a velvet green matte. We recently renovated our home and our new wall color palette didn't bring out the beauty of these paintings. I went to Pictures Plus to get a quote for the re matting of these two pieces. I also needed to get my wedding picture custom framed. The quote was way out of my budget! I saw the reviews here on Yelp of The Art Board. Many happy customer reviews and remarks of Mr. Motoomi Eguchi's professionalism in his knowledge of art and framing stood out to me! Love this frame store! The owner was so kind and welcoming. I brought my own frame in that already had another picture and I wanted to replace it with a Pegge Hopper print that I purchased from the gallery. I took Mr. Eguchi's suggestions regarding the mat color and his final work came out beautiful! He polished my Koa frame, cleaned up the glass, and rewired the hanging wire for me. Took about 1 week! Please support this awesome small business frame shop. I found out the "other" popular shop will not let you use your own frame. You can't find solid Koa frames anymore, which is why it was important for me to reuse the frame I already had. This shop provides that service and does a beautiful job! I will be bringing more things to be reframed later. Stumbling across this store on a Sunday afternoon was meant to be. It is hard to find a framing store that you feel comfortable and not gouged. Well, I found one. The Art Board is a small store but so welcoming and chill. I had an old Japanese piece where the glass broke and I just wanted the glass replaced. The gentleman suggested changing the acid paper but kept the antique frame and even repaird it a bit. Several years ago while we were clearing out our family home after my father's passing, we found a piece of original wood etched artwork that was given to my parents on their 60th Wedding Anniversary. I had always admired it and was lucky that none of my siblings claimed it. It had hung in the same spot in my family home for years but Hawaii's humidity and heat had ravaged the frame and mat. Being that the art is on wood, we had it termite treated and removed the original frame because it seemed to have "disintegrated". The Art Board immediately came to mind to work the "magic" back into displaying this piece. So, off we went to see Mr. Eguchi who holds The Art Board's titles of CEO & janitor and Sensitive Framer. He greeted us upon entry and asked us to wait a few minutes as he was assisting another customer by carrying out her framed projects. He returned to examine our piece and asked us if we had any preferences of mount, color and style of frame. At the same time, he started reaching up on his wall of frame samples. Several different woods, colors and mount depths were shown to us. He quoted us prices for each sample. After which, we made our selection, put a down payment and were given an estimated 10-day time frame or sooner if we were in a hurry. Unfortunately, he called us back a couple of days later because the selection that we made was temporarily out of stock. We had the choices of either waiting for product to arrive or choose another. Days later, we received a call to pick up our art work...it was restored to its original beauty and the new frame is truly an enhancement. Bummed I didn't find this place years ago. I wanted to get 2 pictures re-matted, using the same frames. I was quoted $250 per picture by the other guys. Then I noticed The Art Board sticker on the back of my originals. We must've taken it there over 30 years ago to be framed originally, but didn't know they were still in business. Googled them and found them. Talked with the super nice Japanese man who gave me great advice on the mat color and really took his time to help me. Then, he quoted me $150 per picture. What? Really?? Of course I left the pictures with him and I just picked them up. They are beautiful and his mat color suggestion was perfect! The Art Board was the perfect choice since I was re-matting not pictures, but pieces of silk cloth from Japan, and they had to be sewn on to the backing. He even knew the pictures on the silk represented the seasons - summer and spring to be exact. Wouldn't go anywhere else. Not cheap, and worth every penny. I've had 3 prints framed now, and each time, Eguchi-San or his daughter selected the perfect frame for me very quickly. Orders were completed in a timely fashion. These people are experts and take great pride in their work. Parking is a breeze right in front of the shop. Mr. Eguchi is a really interesting guy, if you have a chance to talk to him. Long overdue review... This is the best frame shop in Honolulu! A few years ago, I had a giant (9 ft tall x 5 ft wide) charcoal on paper drawing framed by this shop. (I just found it included in the photos - a drawing of a man in the ocean, circled by fish - in the photo, a woman stands with her dog to show scale) Initially I had a zany idea for a specially designed frame fused glass edges to make the drawing look like it was encased in a block of ice. The owner found - within a week! - the specialty glass shops, engineer & welders to make it happen! Unfortunately I couldnt afford the $10K+ price tag or manage the logistics of handling something that would end up weighing a few tons!!! So I settled for a modest "ordinary" frame (just XXL). Now, after several years and comparing my frame with many others used for giant drawings, my appreciation for the quality of my frame has grown massively - mine is the best! The Art Board mats & frames stand out for being high quality and truly acid-free to definitely outlast those from other shops with mats which fade or get spotty, usually feature non-UV-filter glass, and frames which start to loosen up after a time... The owner of the shop is himself an artist so has an "eye" and aesthetic sensibility that goes beyond measuring and piecing parts together, mechanically. He welcomes highly unusual (!!!) challenges, will help come up with practical, affordable solutions (without cutting corners) and puts genuine passion and love into framing art to "shine" and it shows! I had an irregular sized print to mat and frame. I went in and ended up completely shocked. For a custom frame, mat, assembly, etc...it would be over $100 for a finished product of 8"x10". I like the person I'm giving this to, but not THAT much. The owner gave me great ideas on how to bring the cost down. He broke everything down and suggested places to get pre-made frames. He was so sweet and helpful. I found the perfect frame & went back today to get the mat done. He was willing to help me out so I wanted to give him some kind of business. Visited the store with 3 framed pieces to work on, 2 to have matting added and 1 to have glass replaced. First piece I explained what I wanted: matting to within 2 inches of center image with cutouts below image for watermark and artist signature, and cutout on bottom left corner to show printers impression mark. "You can't do that." "Why would you do that?" "That will be too thin." On and on about why they couldn't do the work requested and pretty much saying I was an idiot for wanting it the way. Needless to say didn't get to other two pieces. Left "The Art Board" and went then to "The Frame Shop" at Ben Franklin Crafts. The manager knew immediately what I wanted and said he'd done many in that style. We picked the matting, he drew up the order, in-and-out in under 20 minutes - and we agreed on the desired work for the other two pieces as well. Cannot recommend The Art Board at all. Arrogant, rude, and seemingly no clue what they were doing. Try The Frame Shop at Ben Franklin's instead. read more

All I could think of after I brought my first framed picture home from The Art Board was, "Man, I wish I found this place before I ever went to Pictures Plus!" Well, that and what an excellent, quality job they did and for about a third of what I paid previously (at that other place). I would rather not base a review off the negative experiences from a competing business, but let's be honest; PP is the first place you probably think of when you need something framed, right? I know I did. And after a couple of times where I had to take work back to PP to have it redone (once when the spacer was showing, another when the corners of the metal frame were sharp and uneven), having paid upwards of $500 for a single 20"x30" work, I decided that there just had to be a better place. Thanks to Yelp, that place has been found! The owner is really nice and took the time to go over all my options with me. He even warned me a couple times, "oh, that would be more expensive." I appreciate the honesty of a business owner who actually looks out for the best interest of his customers, rather than how much he can make off you. While I've only had one print framed by The ArtBoard, I will definitely return if I ever need something framed again. read more

After checking Yelp reviews, I decided to go with the Art Board to frame a signed print for my dining room. Mr. Uchida is courteous and friendly. He quickly pulled out a mat board sample and frame sample that were absolutely perfect together and for the print! When you find a knowledgeable framer with lots of experience, you don't need to hem and haw. Just give them the image to be framed and turn them loose. In all the years I've done this, I've never been disappointed. I brought the print in on a Monday and asked if it could be ready on Friday. No comment. I finally picked up the print on the following Tuesday. Not exactly express service, but one look at all the jobs in Mr. Uchida's shop and you know that he has plenty of jobs ahead of yours. And, looking at the finished product, you know that he takes the time to do it right. If I'd been able to get the print on Friday, I'd have given the Art Board five stars. The cost was three times what I would pay on the mainland, but I guess that's the "Paradise Tax." read more
